Kiss and Makeup

Rate this book
A hot shade of lipstick calls for a hot, sexy guy…

Makeup artist Chloe Masterson has a look for every occasion. Flying home for your sister's wedding and family torture? Easy. Bring out the sarcastic wit and black eyeliner. Bonus—the look catches the eye of the corporate hottie sitting beside her on the plane. Turns out Ben has the exact same last name, and everyone assumes they're married.

When they get stuck in a hotel room together, Chloe decides to accept the gift the Fates have bestowed upon her. (Tip: a bold lip color does wonders for seduction.) But as their lies begin to snowball, Chloe and Ben find it harder and harder to distinguish between what's real and what's all just smoky eyes and mirrors.

Kiss and Makeup begins with Chloe and Ben meeting on an airplane that is laid over in Chicago due to bad weather. They have the same last name - but no relation to each other - and are forced to share a hotel room when they're mistaken as husband and wife. And so the comedy of errors begins in this fun and flirty romance.

Chloe abandoned a privileged life with her rich parents in order to grow into the person she wanted to be (free spirited make-up artist with colorful hair, body piercings and tattoos). Ben is chasing after a privileged lifestyle having grown up with little, and in doing so is denying the person he is meant to be. Somehow these two lost souls find each other and really shine together.

I giggled a lot while reading this story, and I felt emotionally invested by the end when the climax came. But the smexy scenes - though plentiful - were a bit on the light side and short. However, a story that makes me laugh as much as this one did deserves the full four stars.

There were a few parts of the story that felt a bit rushed to me, and the overall storyline is predictable. Sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered. It's a great beach read that will have you smiling from beginning to end.

I appreciate the free copy in exchange for an honest review!

A fantastic debut from Taryn Leigh Taylor for Harlequin Blaze! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can definitely see why it caught the eye of the judges in the So You Think You Can Write competition in 2014.

Taryn has taken a classic romance trope (the fake engagement/marriage) and infused it with a modern flavour and plenty of humour - which I feel could become her trademark style. This book had me actually laughing out loud in many spots.

The characters are very engaging and the heroine especially is very unique. I LOVED the descriptions of the makeup (the heroine is a makeup artist) and thought her career and talent was very well portrayed. The sex is a little on the lighter/flirtier side for Blaze but it worked well with the story.

I'm so excited to see what Taryn has in store of us with her next book! I'll be getting my hands on it as soon as I can.

I've always enjoyed a Marriage of Convenience story. I love the way the hero and heroine are thrown together and have to work things out. This story doesn't involve a real marriage, but Chloe and Ben end up pretending they are married for his career.

Chloe is anything but conventional. She is a modern heroine with a make-up blog on Youtube but she hasn't quite had the courage to go further with her career aspirations so she's working in a shop in a mall selling make-up.

Ben is determined to reach high in his career, leaving behind his working class roots and becoming a high powered advertising executive.

When they meet, both see clearly they are not a match, despite the sizzling sexual tension. But circumstances, and a little lust, combine to force them together.

Taylor has a very modern voice with her young hero and heroine. It's a fun read with a fair amount of smexy but not as hot and heavy as some Blaze titles. It's just right for the story.

Overall a nice little read with interesting characters.

Suvaidinti santykiai. Suvaidinta santuoka.

Be meilės nebūtų pasitikėjimo ir atvirkščiai. Šitie du dalykai yra neatsiejami.

I caught the first chapter of this book last year when it was entered in Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write contest and it blew me away with how much it sucked me in. It was no surprise that it got published. Not quite a year later and I had to get it and see the rest of the story.

I was only going to read the first chapter at night then head to bed. NOPE! The book and great characters had other ideas. I couldn't put it down. Just one more chapter and then I'll go to bed. Yeah, pipe dream. Each chapter ended in such a way that I needed to read just ONE more.

What had me turning the page over and over were not only the great, unique characters and their witty, sometimes outrageous banter, but the great storyline itself. I love the Pretend Marriage trope and this one did double duty. Yet intermingled with the snappy dialogue and fun, flirty action was deep emotion that reached inside reminding us that we've all had those disappointments and let-downs too.

Taryn Leigh Taylor is a new author to watch. With writing like this, I feel she'll be a new favorite not only for me but for many a romance reader.

Kiss and Makeup was my first book by Taryn Leigh Taylor, and I loved it. The improbable setup is somehow completely believable, and I loved both Chloe and Ben and how they brought out the best in each other. The sexy times were fun--and hot.
I'm definitely going to be reading more by this author.

A sweet and enjoyable Blaze romance
4 stars

You know what to expect when you pick up a Harlequin Blaze - hot, sexy scenarios with hot, sexy characters and a sprinkling of romance thrown in for good measure. A perfect, escapist read with the necessary happily ever after.

What this book added as a little extra was some humour. I have to admit that when Chloe and Ben, our two main characters, first met and the humorous banter started to flow - I wasn’t sure how it could transcend into the hot and sexy I was looking for. But there were still some funny moments and exchanges in the book. They felt real and made the characters easy to root for.

Chloe and Ben are two very different characters. Chloe is your ‘wild child’ character and likes to keep things a little different from the norm. She’s also a make-up artist who works for a store in the mall. Completely opposite to corporate, suit-and-tie Ben. He’s all about getting the best job, the corner office and all the trappings that come with being the best. They wouldn’t normally be two people you would put together but it really works. I think that’s probably because the author doesn’t write either of them as cliches. They are not the stereotypical wild child and corporate suit but are written as normal people with hang-ups and the same every-day confusions as the rest of us.

I had to drop a star because of my earlier concern. I just didn’t feel the same magic and zip from the sex scenes as I would have liked. I don’t think that was anything to do with the characters themselves but I just felt something was missing. Dare I say I wanted it to be a bit more explicit. I wanted passion and fire when what was there was just sweetly sexy.

I really liked this book. It’s just what you need to while away a couple of hours. It’s fun, a different premise on the ‘fake husband/wife’ storyline, and the writing was really, rather good. I’ll be looking out for other books by Taryn Leigh Taylor and would recommend this book to those who enjoy Blaze romances.

I received a free advanced copy in return for an honest review and am very glad I got the opportunity. This is a fantastic effort from Taryn Leigh Taylor. The author does a great job of putting a modern twist on a well worn plot and throws in lots of sexy banter and even sexier sex scenes. I love well written humour and this book delivers. I'll be looking for more from Taryn.

Hot, sexy read about Chloe Masterson and Ben Masterson who when they meet for the first time everyone assumes they are married and what follows is a love story with many twists and turns. Loved it.

This book has both on-screen sex and very little cursing but (weirdly enough) there were three f-bombs that were all dropped in one scene. Those three blips are easily skipped over, but if those kind of things will make you leave a bad review, you might want to skip this one. But if you do, you'll be missing a really great book.

I confess that I'm one of Those Girls who just doesn't understand the allure of makeup at all, but despite that, I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. Makeup is Chloe's job and she loves it, but she isn't snobby about it which I very much appreciated. So even if you're like me and don't do makeup, DO NOT let the makeup part of the premise scare you off.

The chemistry between Ben and Chloe was evident from the first moment that they first come in contact with each other on the airplane, and I was fully invested in them as a couple from the very start. Even as their lies evolved and they started to have friction, I still adored both characters and just wanted them to work it out.

One of my favorite things about this book (beyond Chloe and Ben being stupidly perfect for each other) was that I actually laughed out loud more than once while reading it. While I read a lot of books with funny moments that make me smile, literally laughing out loud doesn't happen very often, but twice I found myself outright cackling, not even caring that people saw me laughing at my Kindle like an idiot. That alone would be worth a five-star rating, even without the awesome love story.

This was my first Taryn Leigh Taylor book, but it will not be my last. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good romantic comedy story with an incredibly wonderful happy ending.

Imagine this, you’ve just boarded your flight and you’re on route to your sisters wedding, you sit next to this gorgeous, but oh-so-cocky guy who hogs the armrest and has a smile that I’m sure could just make knickers evaporate. Then you get snowbound and won’t be able to travel for days. But what happens when the guy you were sitting next to on the plane just happens to have the same surname as you? And the airline assumes he’s your husband and you end up having to share a hotel room? The funniest, sexiest rom-com is what happens! I’ve never laughed so much over a book in years, it reminded me of those old screwball comedies. I LOVED IT.

Chloe and Ben had the most complicated fake, but real, relationship and it was adorable! I really loved the pacing, I loved how quirky the characters are and how well they worked together, I loved how Ben pushes Chloe to be the person she’s meant to be, to follow the dream and how he believes in her. Likewise, Chloe shows Ben there is more to life than just work. They just fit together beautifully.

This was such a fun, sweet, romantic read that will have you laughing out loud. Tayrn is extremely witty and her personality I feel shows itself on every page. If I didn’t know this was her debut I’d have never guessed, she started out as she meant to carry on, strong, funny, emotional she really has just perfected her craft with each and every book she writes.

I actually wasn't expecting much for various reasons (because I stumbled upon this book, didn't know what it was about and never read any of this author's work).
I was pleasantly surprised!
Love the premises/storyline because of its originality and loved that the author followed through with a well executed story overall (characters, plot, ending).

The light humor was a bonus :
"What had she expected him to do? Bust open the door, profess their chemistry was undeniable, and ravish her like the hero in some old romance novel her grandma kept hidden at the back of her bookshelf? Well, kind of. But dudes got arrested for that kind of stuff nowadays."

Easy & Enjoyable read!

As with one of the other reviewers, I couldn't put it down. I stayed up reading it. I had to see what happened next. The author did a wonderful job of slowly dribbling out both characters' backstories--especially Chloe's. There is so much more going on with her than you see in the first chapter--and thankfully, it's relatable life stuff and not melodramatic tragedy. I regret that it sat buried in a pile of paperbacks for so long.

I appreciated that the heroine had an unusual, modern profession (makeup artist/aspiring YouTube star/saleswoman at Sephora-clone) and both she and the narrative took it seriously. Often very funny. The plot got a little too hectic at various points and the narrative was wrapped up way too neatly, way too easily, but I'll definitely be looking for more of Taylor's books.

Loved it

What the author says in the beginning couldn't be said any better. It's really a fantasy to indulge in with a happy ending... pun intended! lol. The book felt just as quick as their whirlwind and maybe that was kinda fitting but it left me wanting to keep reading on about Chloe and Ben.

Ben and Chloe are both so tremendously likable. I mean, I'd like to be friends with them. That's so rare for me with these sorts of books in particular. But these two characters are a delight. The story is fun and sweet and sexy and I love the way she wrote the fake dating trope.

This was included as a bonus in an anthology i bought by another author. It is surprisingly good, and, ironically, much better written than any of the featured author's books in that anthology. (This one really outshines those.)

Later: I got interrupted, and stopped reading this. I may come back and finish it later.

There are days when you just want to read a lighthearted, funny book. This was perfect. I really enjoyed it.

Chloe was on her way home to addend her sister's wedding. she has not been home in years. She feels she has always been a disappointment to her family. On the flight she meets Ben. He is a funny guy that attempts to make her laugh. He is also Sexy as heck. After they have sat on the run way for hours, the flight gets canceled. Everyone is handed a hotel voucher but her. Come to find out she and Ben share the same last name, and the airlines thought they were married. Almost a hour later, she is finally handed her own. When she gets to the hotel, all she wants is a hot bath, and to go to bed. When she opens the door to her room, she sees Ben sitting on her bed. The hotel also thought they were married. At this point there are no more rooms, so they share. I love the way the two get along. The banter back in forth was entertaining.

Ben agrees to go to the wedding with her. He is in town for a business meeting. This is a meeting that could give him the promotion he has worked so hard for. He thought he bombed the meeting. The next morning the old guy from the meeting knocks on his hotel door. Ben had just stepped out of the shower. Chloe answered the door wrapped in a sheet.... How do you explain that???? So Ben said I would like you to meet my wife. I have to say she played her role well. Her family also thought they were engaged. Throughout the story the two are pretending to be married, or engaged. What is real, and what is fake? This is a must read book, when you are in the mood for a lighthearted book that will leave you smiling.

Kiss and Makeup is a wonderful debut from author, Taryn Taylor. The characters were “real”, the dialogue was fresh and funny, and Taryn’s style was relevant to twenty-somethings today. I loved the way the author took a tried-and-true romantic trope and made it unique through the eyes of Ben and Chloe. Chloe is an edgy, twenty-six-year-old cosmetologist trying to escape the stigma of her privileged background. Ben is a self-made businessman in pursuit of the success he feels his late father wanted for him. Through a series of serendipitous misunderstandings, the two are forced to spend a sex-fueled week together.

Ben and Chloe may seem like an odd pairing, but Taryn makes the dynamic between them feel natural. The sex is hot without being corny or over-the-top and as I progressed through their story, I found myself caring about both characters and rooting for their happily ever after. You’ll have to read the book to find out what the outcome of their story is, but I can tell you that you almost certainly won’t be disappointed!

I loved nearly everything about this book but if I had to offer criticism I’d say the wit sometimes outweighs the sensuality in this story. This didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book, however, and I’m sure as Taryn progresses through what I hope is a long, successful romance writing career she’ll find that perfect balance between humor and sex/romance. Cannot wait to see more from this very talented author; Harlequin needs more voices like this!

I really liked it - funny, steamy, and still romantic. The fake wedding/engagement plot doesn't usually work well in contemporary romances, but Ms. Taylor pulls it off. Chloe is working on breaking away from an over-protective rich family to make her own way as a make-up artist. Ben is pushing up the corporate ladder as an homage to his hard-working, blue-collar dad. They meet while stuck on a plane and go on to have what's supposed to be a one-night stand. Events intervene - he ends up as her date at her sister's society wedding, she acts as his fake wife at a client breakfast. Then back in their home city, he asks her to continue acting as his fake wife while he runs through a gauntlet to get a promotion.

They are so good together from the beginning. Good in bed, but also they understand each other, and their are no stupid Big Misunderstandings - even though they both have exes. This was well written, and good story - more than just a bunch of sexy scenes strung together. They have each other's backs in bad situations. The dialog is so funny. I'm already looking for another book by her.

mart and sexy is the best way to describe Kiss and Makeup. I had wanted to read this book since reading the first chapter during Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write contest last year. At first I was worried the rest of the book might not live up to the awesome and memorable first chapter especially since I had been thinking about that chapter for nearly an entire year. Well, I needn't have worried. The rest of the book is just as witty and hot as the first chapter.

Chloe and Ben each have their own reasons at different times in the story for pretending to be married. What started as a little white lie snowballs into something much, much more. You'll root for these complex and likable characters to set aside their differences and reach for that happy ending. I couldn't put the book down.

This is Taryn Leigh Taylor's first book and I can't wait for more from this talented author.

Absolutely loved, loved, loved the first half of this book - it was 5 Stars all the way. Engaging writing was light, funny, romantic, sexy, witty and very clever- raved to my husband about the writing style and the characters and I was savouring the read. It was firmly working its way onto my 2016 Favourites List and even my All Time Favourites List...

However once the plot got buried in convoluted lies, complications, etc. it bogged down a bit for me. Then right at the end the life changing resolutions for both Hero and Heroine came so fast and furious that it felt rushed and not particularly believable, and I did not finish the book with the satisfying hum I got from the build up.

However on the strength of the writing style of the first half of the story, this author is now on my must buy list.

Final Rating: 4 Stars
