Fandoms: Supernatural Relationship: Castiel/Dean Winchester -------------------------------------------------- You're not a drop of infinity, none of you are; you are its creators.
I still find most of DTA incomprehensible, but the parts that aren’t truly hit different. All five stars were earned with the “And thou art a merciless fucking god Dean Winchester” line alone.
The layers came afterward, when they became Dean and Sam as kids playing in the surf miles from the motel they'd been trapped in for days before they finally escaped.
(He wondered why they built a sandcastle, then wondered about the lack of accuracy in the turrets, then wondered why they didn't get more water to achieve better sand-to-liquid ratio and wished he could have helped; he wondered why they ran into the ocean laughing, then wondered why they didn't do it more, because it looked very enjoyable, then wondered what it would feel like to walk into the water himself, feel it lapping around his feet and knees and be consumed beneath the waves; he wondered why they loved it there so much, what attraction the sand and water and air could offer them, then wondered, with a pain almost physical, how they could bear to leave, and how their father could possibly want to make them; he'd stay forever if he could.)
It's a good thing Dean never drives when he's drinking; otherwise, he'd have thrown Cas in the cabin of the jeep already and made for the coast, direction unimportant, just so Cas can walk on his own two mortal feet on shifting sand and see his face the first time he steps into the surf.
The third installment of Down to Agincourt demands to be read carefully. This is the darkest one yet (chapter 7 is especially dark —Seperis isn’t kidding with those content warnings — but the book is ultimately really rewarding. We get some answers about what happened in Dean’s fever dream in Book 1 and learn some new clues. There’s a beautiful (and painful) exploration of grief and loss for literally every character, and the way trauma is portrayed in this nonlinear fashion haunted me. (If you liked how DS9 explored Benjamin’s grief for Jennifer, then you’ll enjoy this in the same “everything hurts right now” way). And of course, everyone’s favorite fake boyfriends continue to stumble their way into better self-esteem and something that looks a lot like happiness.
Did I cry? A little. Was I confused? A lot. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I can’t remember the last time I’ve read about a relationship with such a perfect development arc. Mostly because it took three books so there was one hell of a lot of time for it to develop properly but I am so glad I got to experience it. THIS is how you tell a love story.
I can already see myself re-reading this series in the foreseeable future.
10/2020 - Just read this series last month, but was craving the world and characters so much after finishing that I just had to read it again... There's also the fact that Seperis is also writing the 4th book and posting chapters on AO3, so I can continue to read as the story continues to unfold.... love this world and with the way this author writes, I'm willing to read however long they desire to write about it.
