In the vein of Canterbury Tales , Aaron Boone must bare witness to the histories of his new-found people. Uncover the truth behind the Nightbreed with stories from centuries and worlds all over. From the catacombs beneath the cemetery of Midian, the monsters must rise!
From master storyteller Clive Barker, writer Marc Andreyko ( Batwoman ) and artists Piotr Kowalski ( Dark The Drawing of Three - The Prisoner ) and Emmanuel Xerx Javier ( Raven Nevermore ) comes the story behind Midian's most famous monsters and the man who is destined to save them all! With a cover by Riley Rossmo ( Constantine, Cowboy Ninja Viking ).
This is the second volume in the Nightbreed series.
"A secret society of monsters and misfits, The Nightbreed have always been with us."
More stories about the monsters who dwell in secret are contained here. This was as heart-wrenching an instalment as the initial one was and I am fully bonded with the monsters, who often prove to be far less so than anticipated. This volume was spread across the globe and throughout history, which made it an endlessly entertaining read and with multiple storylines combined inside of it.
Second volume is continuing origin stories of Tribes of Moon members, Boone included, of how he met Lori. Set before her coming to Midian and events that followed. Even though it was fun to read about member of Nightbreed and their plight from humans, the biggest advantage of this volume is story of Boone because it shines a bit light of who he is and why Decker managed to manipulate him so easily.
Disturbingly violent with a generous helping of misery. Great backstories to some well-written characters. I love the art! Boone’s story is so sad, I felt my heart tighten a bit for him.
We get more origin stories of the Nightbreed characters. This is really an interesting series and I think there was more room for expansion. This volume focuses more on Lude and Anastasjia. There are many more Nightbreed they could do origins for, but for now I think we only have these few to enjoy. The art is nice as well.
I really think the whole Cabal universe has plenty of stories left to tell.
This collection of backstories has the semi-sad tale of Lude the blue dude who tells his tale through a battle with a character called Anastasjia who just seemed very unlikable at first, but once she becomes one of the outcasts she becomes more likeable. Then we have another story with a character I did not care for at all - half of him is an author and half of him is his brother who is a critic. One writes books whilst the other reads it and seemingly writes critical articles about them unbeknownst to the author who shares the same body. Seemed a bit odd. Finally we see Boone’s origin story though, which is great! Very dark, very bloody, but it leaves off the bit we know from the movie which I was OK with as this is like filler to the characters.
The amount of sexual violence in this volume felt unnecessary to me. It felt less like lore than the first volume because the number one thing I’ll remember about this volume was the overarching theme of rape. This won’t bother everyone. I’m just kind of tired of sexual violence being overused in horror. If it’s a pet peeve of yours too, you might want to skip this one Even so: the art was still great, everything flowed well, and there were some creative sub-plots. I liked the Pan symbolism. On to volume 3 :)
Loving the series’s, can’t wait to read the rest. I am happy the Nightbreed is available in this form, I am loving all the characters and their back story’s.
Very well done. It's great to be among the former citizens of Midian. Even more gratifying is reading their backstories. Mr. Barker should be pleased that his children are in such capable hands.
Volume 2 of the Nightbreed series starts off right where the previous volume left off, introducing us to 2 more monster/creature citizens of Midian and their requisite backstories.
Since they aren’t really all that original, neither of the 2 characters or their stories really did anything for me but I also have to be impartial here and say that neither were really “bad” or unreadable. And I know all of this is adding up to something in the final volume so I can understand this middle collection being moderately mediocre. I
think the reason this series has failed to really wow me comes as the cost of me not even really understanding this entire idea as it comes from the mind of Clive Barker, who I’ve made clear, is not my favorite author. Having not seen the movie this comic is based on, nor read the book, it fails to resonate with me the way it does with fans of the author, the movie, or both.
Still, I’m 2 collections in so obviously I’m going to have to finish the entire thing.
This is a flashback volume where we get the stories behind several citizens of Midian, as well as that of Boone. There's nothing too new and unique here - a movie star whose failing looks lead her to an even more self-destructive state, and an abandoned mutant with mother issues. The method of telling the stories is a little distracting, as they are interspersed with each other rather than told all at once. The art is workable, making the Nightbreed look disturbing but still relatable. Beyond that, there's not much going on here. It's a decent enough book, but nothing memorable.
I have always been a fan of Clive Barker movies. His works are so different from other authors. This graphic novel is an amazing work with excellent graphics. Each monster has been given a narrative so that the reader can relate to them. Somewhere the book compels us to think that people who think differently are not accepted by the society. Society always accept only those who confirm to their standards. I loved reading the book.
Part 2 of some of the origin stories of characters in the Story/Film, pretty cool, good art, part 1 2 and 3 take place post the destruction of Midian. Check it out.
These next 4 issues go to some really dark places but have a lot more going on under the surface then the first 4 issues collected in volume one! I can not wait to finish this comic series!
Clive Barker's Nightbreed are among my favorite horror creations and getting backstories of some of the individual monsters of Midian anthology style is definitely something I can get behind. It's a bit like Tales from the Crypt except with more sex and violence. There were some things I felt were a little underdeveloped, it feeling like some important parts were cut without being replaced...making the stories feel like they jumped ahead past some good stuff...but what's there is still good and overall I loved it.
Without reading the synopsis of the movie this book makes absolutely no sense, even having read the first confusing book. In theory they're supposed to wrap this up in a final book, but I'm not sure how they could conceivably do that. There's the Boone part (which makes no sense, but at least exists in a wider narrative vis-à-vis the movie). Then there's the weirdness with the reporter and the authors which seems to fit in nowhere other than to expand on the first books catalog of weird people.
