The Child I Took to War is a deeply raw and emotional memoir. What stood out to me most was how honestly Christopher Waters shares not only his experiences in Iraq, but also the childhood trauma and struggles that followed him long before he ever entered the military.
This book really makes you think about how experiences from childhood can shape a person in ways they may not even recognize until much later. His journey through combat, addiction, relationships, fatherhood, and emotional struggles is painful at times, but it also shows the strength it can take to confront your past and try to move forward.
I appreciated that the story doesn’t try to make everything neat or easy. It’s honest about the mistakes, setbacks, and self-destructive choices along the way. That honesty is what makes the message about redemption and healing feel genuine.
Daniel William Maleika did a great job narrating the audiobook. His delivery fit the seriousness and emotion of the story and made the difficult parts especially impactful.
Overall, this is a powerful and very personal story about trauma, survival, and finding a way back from some incredibly dark places. It won’t be an easy read for everyone, but for those who connect with stories about veterans, trauma, fatherhood, and resilience, I think it’s a memoir worth experiencing.
