Always Yours: A Slow-Burn, Friends to Lovers Romance

Rate this book
Alyssa Carter has rebuilt her life from the wreckage. After tragedy and betrayal made her headline news, she packed up her son and moved to Lennox Falls for a fresh start. She has a list of must-haves for her next locks, lighting, and a bathtub she can soak in. Finding love is nowhere on her list.

Julian Wade doesn't let love anywhere near him. CEO of WadeHouse Records and the man who raised three siblings after their family fell apart, Julian has built his life on discipline and control. He noticed Alyssa Carter the day she cussed him out on a football field, defending her son, and he's been noticing her ever since. But noticing isn't wanting, and wanting is for men with less to lose.

Between morning runs and Tuesday lunches, they develop a friendship that doesn't need a label. Until the friendship stops being a friendship, and not wanting becomes the most exhausting lie either of them has told themselves.

A widow rebuilding her life. A man who has spent two decades making sure he doesn't need anyone. Always Yours is a slow-burn, friends-to-lovers contemporary romance about grief, survival, and love that arrives after you've stopped looking for it. If you love slow-burn romance with literary depth, Black love rendered with care, and HEAs that feel earned to the very last page, this may be your next good read.

Amazing

This series has been such an amazing journey! Seeing the wall Julian had up from the first two books was so sad. He had to pretty much carry the weight of everything that took place and never got to properly heal or grieve. Seeing his journey to heal and grow was so good! Now Alyssa, she was also a tough cookie to crack. She had so much she has dealt with and seeing her finally being able to be free and happy so so emotional. Now her mama is a mess! Really loved Julian and Alyssa story!

This one has to be my favorite thus far! Such a good read!

4.5 ⭐️ - Always Yours was such a beautiful and emotionally grounded romance. Alyssa and Julian’s story is a true slow burn, built on friendship, trust, and all the quiet moments that slowly turn into something neither of them was looking for.
I really loved Alyssa as a character. Watching her rebuild her life and create a sense of safety and stability for herself and her son made her journey feel especially meaningful. Julian was equally compelling, with so much of his identity tied to protecting and providing for everyone around him. Their connection developed naturally through morning runs, lunches, conversations, and simply being present for one another.
The friends-to-lovers progression was one of my favorite parts. There was so much longing and tension beneath their friendship, and watching them slowly realize that they had become more important to each other than either wanted to admit was incredibly satisfying. Their romance felt mature, intentional, and earned.
I also appreciated how the story handled grief, survival, family, and learning to make space for happiness after loss. The emotional moments had weight without overwhelming the romance, and the Black love at the center of the story was written with so much warmth and care.
Overall, Always Yours was tender, romantic, and deeply emotional. Alyssa and Julian’s love story takes its time, but that made the payoff even sweeter. A beautiful romance about finding love when you are not looking for it and realizing that letting someone care for you can be its own kind of strength.

I love that fits!

Wow, what a story! My first 5 star read of the year and it is so deserving. This was beautifully written. This is a friends to lovers, contemporary romance. It is a slow burn, and I wanted to savor it into the very end. As soon as I read the prologue, I knew it was probably gonna be five stars because I had already highlighted three different quotes and I rarely ever do that in books.

In book 3, we finally get the story of the eldest brother Julian, who had to take on being the protector and the provider for his siblings once his parents was no longer there. All I could say is what a man! His story is the one of healing after the grief and what it’s like to be the one to carries everything, but never having someone there to put your load off on one.

Then we have the sister of Rashad from book 2, Alyssa, her story is one of most black women that you are strong enough to handle anything and you don’t need a man and if you have a man be thankful for the bare minimum. She is a single mom who is navigating healing after heartbreak and betrayal. But as a woman we must know that we are allowed to be strong and soft, independent and held, capable and covered.

This story reminds you that you are allowed to be cared for! One of my favorite quotes from this is…They refused to be carried. Two people who had learned, in the hardest ways life teaches, that needing someone is how you end up on the floor, when they are no longer there to catch you!

Just masterly done! I cannot wait to see what is in store for the rest of the series. I’m already feeling like book 4 is probably gonna wreck me but I’m ready for the journey.

This was a new to me author and one that did NOT disappoint! 👏🏾📚
This is the kind of slow burn I don’t mind AT ALL. 🥹 There was truly no other way to tell this story with the same grace and intention. The pacing allowed me to really sit with the story, to digest it, feel it, and take in all the little moments instead of rushing through them.
And whew… I felt every bit of this story! 😭❤️ The emotions, the tension, the vulnerability… all of it.
Sometimes a story doesn’t need to move at lightning speed to keep you turning the pages. Sometimes the slow burn is what makes the payoff hit even harder.
This one was a journey, and I was completely along for the ride. 5 ⭐️!

Y’all…I think I owe slow burns an apology 😂 Not because I’m suddenly converted…I still don’t have patience for a slow burn that’s just…slow for no reason. But “Always Yours” reminded me that maybe the issue isn’t the trope. Maybe it’s whether the story is moving with intention. This story wasn’t dragging its feet. Every morning run, every lunch, every conversation between Alyssa and Julian served a purpose. Their friendship wasn’t just there because the book said they were friends…we actually got to watch that foundation being built. So by the time they crossed that line into something more, it felt earned. I wasn’t sitting there thinking, “It’s about time.” I was thinking, “Yeah…this makes sense.” Alyssa was probably my favorite part of the story. Watching her rebuild her life, create stability for herself and her son, and slowly learn to trust again made her so easy to root for. She wasn’t waiting around for someone to save her…she was doing the work herself. And Julian? Whew. That’s my kind of book boyfriend. He wasn’t loud or flashy. He wasn’t trying to prove he was a good man every five minutes. He just kept showing up. Consistently. Quietly. Sometimes the smallest acts of love speak the loudest. One thing N.W. Brown did beautifully was write a Black love story that felt soft without feeling boring. Even while tackling grief, healing, family, and second chances, the romance never got lost. It was tender, intentional, and rooted in emotional intimacy instead of just physical attraction, and I appreciated that. Now…my only real complaint? Ironically, after spending this whole review apologizing to slow burns, I actually wanted the ending to slow down. 😂 The story took its time building this beautiful relationship, but once we reached the finish line, everything wrapped up a little too quickly for me. The Sabrina situation felt like it came out of left field, and I would’ve gladly traded some of that for more time with Alyssa and Julian. I wanted to see more of their healing journey, more of the therapy process, and more of them simply settling into the life they worked so hard to build together. After investing all that time into these characters, I just wasn’t ready to let them go. Overall, Always Yours reminded me of something I honestly didn’t expect to learn:Maybe I don’t hate slow burns…maybe I just hate slow burns that don’t know where they’re going. This one knew exactly where it was going, and it made every step count.
If you love friends to lovers, emotionally mature romance, healing journeys, and Black love written with care, I definitely recommend picking this one up.

Tropes: Slow Burn, Mental Health Representation, Past Trauma, In-Laws/Brother’s friend, Found Family, Small Town, Grief and Loss

Always Yours: A Slow-Burn Romance by N.W. Brown is the third book in her Wade Legacy Series. The first two books featured younger siblings Zion and Simone, respectively, Always Running and Always Mine. The books are interconnected because characters cross over; however, all books can be read as standalones.

Always Yours showcases older brother and family linchpin, Julian Wade. At nineteen his family imploded with the passing of his mother and Julian had to step up and fill shoes too big for him. The death of his mother effectively paralyzed his father, and he walked away from the family. Subsequently, Julian became surrogate parent, head of their music company and the glue holding everyone else together. He CARRIED every burden and nineteen years later he has not relinquished the load.

Alyssa Carter knows a great deal about carrying loads. For much of her marriage she scurried around to please her husband, being the kind of wife who was self-sufficient and self-sustaining, Not taking up too much space or asking for too much of his time and none of his efforts. Only to learn in the most public and humiliating fashion that his efforts, affection, attention and money were placed in other endeavors: women, shady deals, actively robbing Peter, Paul AND Alyssa. When the smoke clears Alyssa is a widow with a young child (adorable Micah), undeserved notoriety and no assets. So, when eventually her brother, Raschad Carter (Always Mine) invites her to relocate from New Jersey to Lennox Falls, she welcomes the opportunity as a reset.

Julian and Alyssa have known each other tangentially since their siblings are married and they share a niece and a nephew. Once in Lennox Falls, Julian and Alyssa form a gradual and sometimes rocky friendship. For different reasons and different sources of trauma, they are not looking for romance. But when the heart is involved, memos about intentions are often ignored. These two skittish, damaged and hesitant people soon find themselves reluctantly but hopelessly in love. But can they navigate the weight of the past and find a way to love each other in the here and now or will their collective damage be too much to overcome?

Conclusion:

This book is the first one that I have read by this author. Even without having read the other Wade books, this one was easy to follow, and I was able to keep all the players straight. I do want to delve into the previous books since this one made such a positive impression; complex, funny, well-written and emotionally rich, it is a must read.

Between the callous antics of Alyssa’s husband and the description of Julian’s mother’s passing, Ms. Brown takes her readers on a visceral journey of grief and the damage a toxic relationship can do to the spirit AND future relationships. Julian and Alyssa handled their emotional baggage by approaching romance in different ways. Julian curates and controls his relationships, really situationships, and never allows them into his “real world”. On the other hand, Alyssa has closed herself off from love and never dates, to the chagrin of her supportive sisters.

One of the book’s interesting substories is the continual reappearance of one of Julian's “curated relationships”, Sabrina gives stalker vibes and as the old folks would say “somethin’ bout her ain’t right” 😊. Final words, this is a lengthy book and I enjoyed every word. From the beginning of the story to the end, we see so much growth and progress from our main characters; their initial friendship was so sweet, and they had the love part on lock, they just needed to add true trust and flexibility to the equation which they did! Ms. Brown plans to release Tre’s story next as well as a prequel staring the patriarch and matriarch of the Wade family.

That's the thing about losing yourself slowly. You're present for all of it and witness to none of it.

Because men are fickle. Black men, white men, poor men, rich men, fine ones, and the ugly ones too.

“I don’t know that I’m built for this anymore. I came out of something that took everything I had. Not just a bad marriage. But giving a man all of me and watching him set it on fire.

Letting her was its own kind of gift. The last one I had left to give her today.

That’s what grief does. It puts pieces of you in a room and closes the door.

Nobody had ever gotten ahead of one of the things I wanted before. They only ever got in front of it to block the light,

“Jesus Christ, Alyssa, ask me for more! USE ME!” The words exploded out of me. “I’m here. I’m literally standing here, wanting to be used by you. Wanting to be needed by you. That’s what people they—what people do in a relationship. They need things. They ask. They receive.”

That’s somebody caring enough to fight for you when you won’t fight for yourself.”

Always Yours is one of those beautifully written romances that reminds you love doesn't have to be loud to be unforgettable. As the third book in The Wade Legacy series, N.W. Brown once again proves why this family has become so easy to love. This story is a heartfelt blend of healing, friendship, grief, and second chances that kept me emotionally invested from beginning to end.
Alyssa is rebuilding her life after unimaginable loss and public heartbreak, while Julian has spent years convincing himself that love is a distraction he can't afford. Alyssa is the only person who doesn't bow down to Julian's overbearing nature and Julian is the only man who consistently shows up for Alyssa without asking for anything in return. Watching their friendship slowly evolve into something deeper was incredibly rewarding. Every conversation, every shared moment and every bit of vulnerability felt genuine, making their love story feel earned rather than rushed.
The Wade family continues to be one of my favorite fictional families, adding warmth, humor and heart to every chapter. If you love slow-burn, friends-to-lovers romances with literary depth, emotional healing, and a happily-ever-after that truly feels deserved, Always Yours belongs on your TBR.

A love story with depth………

I loved the story of Alyssa and Julian. They started with friendship that allowed them to be open and honest with one another. Julian was such a strong hero. He did everything for the people he loved and took pride in that, but he didn’t know how to allow people to do for him. He decided early in life that love and marriage weren’t meant for him until Alyssa came into his life. Alyssa was a widow moving away from the scandal created by her cheating husband after his death to start over. She had to work through issues from her marriage as well as with her mother and how she was raised. These main characters had so many layers that needed to be worked through. They were interesting, deep, entertaining, and extremely lovable. I loved them both and rooted for them to be together. It took a while, but the path was worth it because it all made sense. They both had trauma that needed to heal so they could truly be there for one another.

I loved the Wade Family and the closeness that they share. The banter and honesty between the brothers is amazing. It warms the heart to read about black men that share their feelings and lean on one another. The women also have a closeness too, but that is not that unusual. The calls that Alyssa had with her sisters were funny and so believable. This book touched on so many things - grief, mental abuse and neglect within a marriage, women being strong and soft, men being in touch with their emotions, healing, forgiveness, therapy, violence, mental illness, blended families, hot steamy language and descriptive scenes, romance, love, and a HEA.

Julian has been my favorite so far, although I really loved Zion too. I couldn’t stop reading. I stayed up and read through the night because I had to know how things would end, but then I was sorry that it was over. I’ve never read a book where I felt like it was too long (because I wanted to know what happened) but also felt that it wasn’t enough (because I wasn’t ready for it to be over). I definitely have found myself loving the men and frustrated with the women so far in the series, except Alyssa; but in the end, I loved them all and the way they loved one another. I hate that I have to wait so long for the next two books. I’m excited to read about Tre and get more insight into their parents because I find it hard to feel bad for their father at this point.

Alyssa and Julian anchor this second-chance romance from N.W. Brown, and what stands out most is how well-drawn everyone around them is too. The supporting cast and family dynamics feel just as real as the leads. At its core, this is a story about grief and healing, and it handles both with real nuance, showing how differently people process loss and how the imprint our parents leave on us shapes the way we love and show up for others.

What I appreciated most: the book’s quiet insistence that we don’t always have to be strong. There’s something genuinely moving about watching Alyssa learn that she’s allowed to let someone else carry the weight for once and that needing support isn’t a failure. Julian meets her there, and their connection builds slowly but steadily; it’s a slow burn of sorts, and it takes a while for them to fully lock in, but the wait feels earned rather than dragged out.

This book delivers on the romance tropes I’m a sucker for: a generous, financially secure hero who fully supports his woman’s dreams, paired with a heroine who’s strong and capable on her own but still gets to be soft and taken care of. And can we talk about the step-daddy representation? Julian stepping in for Alyssa’s child, Micah, was genuinely touching. Her being a single mom was never treated as a dealbreaker, and watching Julian love and provide for her hit every soft spot. Micah himself is an absolute scene-stealer. He’s just so adorable.

Alyssa’s ex is exactly the kind of poorly-behaved ex you love to hate. There are enough twists and turns to keep the pacing engaging, though it did drag in a few spots. Still, watching both Julian and Alyssa grow over the course of the story, and finally get to rest in a love that feels earned, made it worth the ride.

Bottom line: A grounded, emotionally honest romance with a swoon-worthy hero and a heroine who gets to be both strong and soft. Recommended, especially for readers who love a man with money and a good step-daddy arc.

Tropes:
* Love after loss
* Lawyer FMC
* Billionaire MMC
* Single mom

Favorite quotes:
“That was what waited on the other side of letting somebody matter that much. You handed them the power to end you, and prayed God let you keep them.”

“‘You deserve to live a soft life.’”

“I stood there and let myself be covered by a love I no longer had to earn by being strong enough not to need it.”

My thoughts:
Truly, utterly breathtaking… This being the third book made it more impactful for me. Watching Julian be the quiet, no bullshit head of the family in the past two books made watching him open up in this one, that much more beautiful. The way Julian is such a steady presence and shows up for those he cares about truly warmed my heart. He isn’t gushy about it. He’s just… steady. His relationship with Micah was my favorite because he loved that little boy like his own despite claiming never to want kids. The ending had me bawling, not from sadness but from happiness. The growth of Alyssa and Julian was so profound from beginning to end. Watching their relationship grow as well as them individually was like watching flowers blossom. The book really touched on the identity and struggle of black women. ♾️⭐️ each book keeps getting better!!!

call me Mrs Julian Wade

I don’t even have the words to say how much I loved this book. I laughed, I cried, I was ready to fight someone, but fell in love, I smiled, I grieved. This was absolutely 5 stars. This story focuses on Julian (the oldest son) and Alyssa (who happens a to be the sister of Raschad from book 2) Julian has had to handle everything since his mothers death and his father’s departure. He was never looking for love, just wanted to take care of his family. Alyssa is a widower with a young son, Micah, and decides to move to the Lennox Hills after after a scandal and the death of her husband. Then their story together begins. It is a slow burn but baby the yearning is on a thousand. I found myself giggling and kicking my feet. They both have stuff to work on, but that Julian is a real man. I think I love him! 😉 I am still smiling about the book. I made sure to purchase the physical copies too! @N.W. Brown Writes✍🏾 you have found another fan in me. I can’t wait for the prequel and to read Tre’s story. Thank you for your pen and the heart to tell these stories. They will live forever in my heart. Please listen to the playlist it takes the experience to another level (thank me later)

I gave it the 5 because my complaints are super minor. This story was so good from start to finish, the way she built the characters as individuals and showed us how they came together. Like so many times the stories just give us lust and passion with no deep connections. This was everything we got to see them falling in love and choosing each other slowly and steadily. We got to address some hard work and progress required to overcome conditioning. Most of all we got to see two givers come together and be exactly what the other needed. My only real complaint was the Sabrina thing, being that the story had been fairly low angst it felt like it came outta left field I won’t lie. At the same time though I I understand why she spiraled like that I just felt like for as quickly as it was wrapped it would’ve been okay to keep it out I would’ve liked to see the couples therapy sessions as well. Overall this was my first book by the author and it will not be my last cus she wrote her ass off 🗣🗣

Sighhhh... another beautiful slow burn that crawled into my heart and set up permanent residency.

This series literally has a hold on me. The healing and growth from these characters is always incredibly heartfelt. The way the author tells each love story pulls you in so deeply, it feels like you’re right there experiencing their journey with them.

Because of that, I understood why Alyssa struggled to ask for help, always feeling like she had to handle everything on her own. And I also understood why Julian was so protective and constantly tried to carry everyone else’s weight without realizing he deserved to have someone help carry his too.

Watching two selfless individuals learn to accept help, lean on each other, and become the safe space they both needed made their connection so special. 🥹

Always and forever

Hands down this is my current favorite from this series!

In this we have Julian who is the CEO of the company and has always put others above him. He is content with his life until Alyssa comes into town to start over after tragedy. Both Julian and Alyssa needed this friendship which became the one thing they didn’t know they needed.

This was truly a beautiful story of falling in love, letting down walls, and most importantly how to navigate grief when it feels like you have to be the glue holding everything together. Julian and Alyssa’s chemistry together felt natural and I felt it from the pages. I tried taking my time reading but I honestly couldn’t put it down.

I can’t wait to read the next two in this series.

This book was amazing! Alyssa was conditioned to not need anything, to be hyper independent and too not be too much for a man as per her mothers constant life advice stemmed from hardship. Julian was always the provider, caretaker and bulldozers of the family. After the death of his mum and abandonment of his father, he took the role of both parents at 19. Never made space to grieve but become the space for others to grieve. When both characters meet, they had instant chemistry but not wanting to be at the receiving end of certain love languages made them hit several road blocks along the way. However, they prevailed and reading their journey of love and affection was one of my favorite things this week. They were both what each other needed at exactly the right time.

Wade Family fan!

N. W. Brown does it again! Always Yours is compelling contemporary romance, featuring flawed people (real GROWN adults!) finding their happy in every area of life. I knew Julian’s story would be my favorite, but I didn’t expect to be up all night to finish it!

At this point, I belong to the Wade family. 🤣 I’m counting down to the next two books, but not ready for this series to end!

This was sooooooo good! I love this series because it’s showing the ways trauma can impact and influence romantic relationships without painting them as the savior, just something that can help along the way. Julian, the fictional man that you are and Alyssa I get you. I related to both characters and their struggles on some level and MAN! I can’t wait for the next book. October is too long 😫😭

Julian and Alyssa were two sides of the same coin. Both of them struggled with control and functioning in broken strength.

Their story is a real reminder that carrying it all isn’t an accomplishment.
