2.5 to 3 I didn't fall in Love Stars!

After reading the Bayonet Scars by J.C. Emery, I jumped at the chance to read this new series. But after reading it I have mixed feelings about it. I liked the idea of the story but I didn't fall in love with the characters as much as I would have liked. This series has huge potential but there was something about this one that I didn't fall for.
Melanie Kincaid has lived a pretty easy life. But she hasn't always felt like she belonged. Jameson Hayes is a NYC firefighter and comes from a great family. He was content with his life but not happy. He didn't realize this until he meets Melanie for the first time.
Melanie and Jameson basically have a love at first site thing but can't do anything about it, since Jameson's in a relationship where he lives with his girlfriend. So instead of breaking up with her he's going to stay in the relationship until his lease is up. What?????
So even though he's head over heels for Melanie and knows she's the one he decides to ride out his relationship. He even still sleeps with her. Then finally when his girlfriend effs things up does he become single. At this point his brother has made a play for Mel so he stands aside. What????
Instead of talking to Mel he assumes, assumes and assumes. At this point he decides to sow his wild oats, even though he's still waiting for Mel. What??????
I have to admit that this part of Jameson didn't make him endearing to me. His actions spoke different then his feelings towards Mel.
Now Mel was a bit more endearing to me but she was playing with fire. She too did not communicate properly which caused more unessecary angst for these two. Thankfully for her she now feels a place where she belongs, which is part of the Hayes family who have seem to have adopted her and her family. Once these two finally get their heads out of their asses and Jameson stops playing around these two can finally be together.
Which would have been great but then Jameson turns schmaltzy sweet which again doesn't endear me to him. However even though schmaltzy they are good together and the Hayes had already adopted Mel so things were good.
After reading my review people may be wondering why did I even continue when this couple wasn't winning me over. Well the reason is, while Jameson and Melanie are playing whatever game they were playing with each other, there is a serial arsonist on the loose. This drama is what kept me going. It was suspenseful and the reason I will continue with this series because I need to know who it is and why. We are left with a couple of options of whodunnit and I can't wait to find out more and why the Hayes are being under attack.
Even though Jameson didn't win me over I did like the idea of the story. It had huge possibilities but fell flat for me. However the suspense was good and this series has huge potential. I have a feeling that this series is going to get better and better. Fingers Crossed.

Mel really has to pee. Badly. She bonds with another desperate to pee gal named Royal, and ends up in the men’s room...meeting Royal’s brother Jameson. He’s a hottie firefighter, there’s sparks...and also a big sticking point - he has a girlfriend. Lots o’ angst, some mystery and eventually, romance happens.
Intrigued by blurb, then by the writing : Firefighters, possible mystery subplot and did I mention hot firefighters? I was down to read this book. As it began, it almost gave me a Kristen Ashley-vibe, especially when the heroine went through her stream of consciousness babbling. I like KA, so this is a favorable comparison. To the author’s credit, even after I struggled with some story choices (more on that later), around the 70% mark, I was in it to win it, and I kept reading because I did want to know more about the arsonist mystery. Also...
I liked friend/family dynamics : The story behind the names of Jameson and his siblings is crazy yet funny, and the relationships between the siblings and Mel were some of the strongest moments in the book. They’re believable and I wanted to know more about them.
Not much heat sexually : I was surprised, but the heat factor is fairly tame. Considering the way the romance unfolds, I’m was ok with this for reasons explored below.
Now this bit’s spoilery, so if that’s not your thing, please go straight to the bottom line. The rest of you, check this out :
Didn’t realize it was featured cheating: If I had to pick two things that I really, really struggled with, it’s Jameson’s relationships and sexual contact with women other than Mel, even if he is not in a relationship with her at the time. This would not be a “safe” read, and for those who only want those, please be forewarned.
My big struggle comes from the fact that he was all about being with her, even tempted to stray from his relationship with Lydia. I may not like it but in my attempt to stay objective, I could probably get past it. But then he’s single, and instead of pursuing Mel, he decides to sow some wild oats while he waits for her to come back to town? Nah, son - that just does NOT fly with me. It really brought him down in my eyes, and as a consequence, while the secondary plotline was interesting, I just couldn’t connect with his relationship with Mel. That she accepts all of this? That really, really didn’t make sense to me.
Oh, and that mystery : Still a mystery at the end, which is a bit frustrating and also affected my enjoyment of this story.
I struggled with certain choices, but the writing kept me intrigued so I have to give this a conditional recommendation - for those who don’t mind cheating by the hero (not while with the heroine), and have a thing for firefighters, you may enjoy this series more than I did.

Fall For Me is the first book in the Ladder Company Series. The Ladder Company Series is a group of new adult standalone contemporary romances each about a different brother (or sister) in a family of 14 firefighters. I think there are 4 Hayes siblings currently working at Ladder Company One. I like this series style and I think it works best with a large group of friends or a family dynamic so I am predicting great things for the Ladder Company Series. Told in dual narrative between the main guy and main girl it is sure to be a hit with fans of new adult contemporary romances.
I read a lot of new adult contemporary romance and I read them in all romance tropes. But I have to say, one trope that I do not read that much is one where one of the ultimate couple to be is in a relationship with someone else for much of the book. Because it can leave me feeling conflicted. This was not a cheating book. Jameson and Mel only shared one kiss and both of them felt awful about it, but it was clear that they had feelings for each other. So that made me feel a little better about the setup. And Jameson's girlfriend was a crazy B. But still I did feel kind of bad for her at some points in the story, but then she would go and do something so crazy that I kind of wanted to kill her and I was back to wanting her out of the picture, like, yesterday.
Mel is beyond great. I loved her as the main character of Fall for Me. She is a sweetheart, and freakin' hilarious. She is great, it is no wonder that the entire Hayes family is half way in love with her as soon as they meet her. She has a streak of crazy in her but it is the interesting kind of crazy, not the kill you in your sleep kind of crazy. Which makes her a perfect match for Jameson.
Jameson and Mel are great. I did want to shake Jameson about a million times though. I have no idea why he continued to stay with his crazy girlfriend. There were no feelings there, not even really friendship. They were just awful to each other, so I didn't get why he continued to stay. But to each their own. The story line of Fall for Me was a really cool mix of romance, a dash of drama and even a bit of suspense thrown in. I love that the mystery aspect was not solved in this book and will most likely be something that is carried over into the next book. I would read these books in order for that reason.
This is a great steamy and flirty new adult contemporary romance with a good amount of humor thrown in. I think it will be great for fans of Sawyer Bennett. This was my first JC Emery book, but I know it won't be my last. Not by a long shot.This review was originally posted on Book Briefs

Melanie and Jameson meet at a benefit for her mother's charity. He's a fire fighter and she's a college senior home for the summer. They experience an instant attraction, with one glitch: Lydia, Jameson's live-in girlfriend of the past five years. Conundrum 1.
Melanie and Royal, Jameson's younger sister, hit it off and develop a friendship. Jameson's entire family seems to like Mel a whole lot more than Lydia. Hennesey, Jameson's brother is unattached and interested in sparking a fire with Mel. Jameson is irrationally jealous. Conundrum 2.
Mel and Jameson become friends, although this is fraught with sexual tension because each wants to connect, but Lydia stands in the way... Conundrum 3.
Mel is leaving at the end of the summer to return to school and Jameson's locked into a lease with Lydia until March. Lydia knows about Mel, and confronts them about their 'friendship.' Conundrum 4.
Lots of stuff happens, but most of which was either Mel or Jameson acting poorly, with poor communication, or via stalking through FB or conversations with Jameson's family. The first third of the book was not my fave--Jameson's issue, essentially, is that he can't afford the rent on the apartment (that Lydia picked out) without Lydia's contribution. So, he's too cheap to break up with her and have a chance with Mel....? Doesn't inspire me.
Mel is spoiled and timid. She wants hearts and flowers, but can't/won't ever say this to Jameson, unless she's rip-roaring drunk. Hmmmm. *Scratches head* *re-checks age of MC*
Okay, as this is a romance (of sorts), telling you that the leads get together isn't a spoiler, but the wait for them to get together--after they have been single for a while--was really too long. Also, they NEEDED to talk more. I wasn't sure if these were adults or fifth graders with a first crush.
The best part of this book was probably the mystery surrounding Mel's stalker, an arsonist who Collects women, and spouts stuff about sins even though it put me in mind of SE7EN, ("Seven") quite possibly the worst movie ever made with such an A-List cast.

The romance itself resolved, but the mystery was To Be Continued, apparently, in the next book in this series. For a fire fighter romance there is an absence of heat, both the line-of-duty variety, and the sexytimes.

Do you have a thing for firefighters ? Loved the TV Show Chicago Fire ? JC Emery has envisioned both Hot Guys and Firefighters together to bring us readers a new series called The Ladder Company. In Book #1 we meet Melanie Kincaid who by all means is a society trust-fund rich girl but deep down she would rather wear jeans and a tshirt and have fun than spend a single moment with all the other rich socialites and Jameson Hayes who is a seventh generation firefighter and doesn't have time for distractions which hot girs falls into that category especially when he has big shoes to fill as being a firefighter runs in the male bloodline of the Hayes Family. The two meet at a benefit in which Jameson's older brother is recieving an award for via Jameson's younger sister who happens to meet Melanie while in line for the toilet and as we witness just like any event - the women's line is always ten times longer than the males - it's one of those event unwritten rules that if you are a female and have a desire to use the toilet - you will be waiting a looooooonnng time. These two would make a perfect pair but of course , Jameson is also already taken by a girlfriend he isn't even sure he loves anymore. As the story goes on , we read as this tension -chemistry filled relationship/friendship spurs between Jameson and Melanie and he better get in fast as it seems that Melanie is the new "hot thing" for the Hayes Brothers and if Jameson doesn't step up his game then he may be left standing in the shadows. Of course what's a good story without a twist and OMG moment when the town is struck by an arsonist and it seems that he wants Melanie for himself and is willing to go to lengths to get her - even if it means hurting those around her . What's a guy gotta do to win the girl ? He better hurry and put out the flames and woo her otherwise it might be bye-bye to a romance of Melanie and Jameson.

You know those books that keep you up at night because you can't put the damn thing down?? Yeah, this is one of those.
JC Emery has done it again. Fall for Me is funny and romantic and the characters are so damn real that it's easy to get lost in the pages. You root for the couple to get together than you watch as they fight to keep what they have with nails between your teeth a grimace as things start to get a bit scary.
Don't get me wrong, this is a light hearted love story and while the suspense is just the perfect amount to keep you itching to find out more, it is nothing like the author's other series that delves into the darker side of humanity.
I personally can not wait for the next Ladder Company novel....even if this one isn't even technically out yet.

Falling For Me follows the story of Melanie and Jameson. Melanie comes from a privileged life, but could care less about her financial status. She loathes having to go to socialite benefits where the old money looks down at the new money. This particular benefit though seems to look up for Melanie. This is where she meets Jameson. When the two of them meet, their connection is instant. The only problem, Jameson has a girlfriend and wants to “be the good guy”. The two share a dance and nothing more. But, as time goes on, they can’t get each other out of their heads. And it doesn’t help that Melanie’s new bff is non other than Jameson’s sister. Fate just keeps throwing the two of them together…Jameson lives and breathes being a firefighter. It was what he was born to do. The last thing he needed in his life was Melanie. Melanie may only be home for the summer, but he’s having the hardest time staying away from her. Will Jameson ever open his eyes and see what is in front of him?
I have to say that when I read the synopsis of this story, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I ended up having a complete love/hate relationship with it. Fall for Me started off with a lot of potential. Jameson and Melanie have instant connection. But, Jameson has a girlfriend and Melanie won’t pursue anything further than a friendship with Jameson. Which was a good thing. My issue was Jameson. He didn’t give me the best first impression. If he was in a relationship, he had no business flirting with Melanie. And if said relationship was not working out, then he should have dumped his girlfriend. I had a hard time buying that he was going to break up with his girlfriend, once the lease on their apartment was over. I mean, who does that? Why would you willingly stay with someone that makes you unhappy. Plus, his girlfriend wasn’t all sweet and perfect. Some of the things she did, well, lets just say when he found out about one incident in particular, that should have been it! Relationship over. Also I hated that Jameson was stringing Melanie along. Wanting her to wait for him, but I didn’t feel that he ever gave her a reason to do so. And then, the icing on the cake: Jameson finally sees the light and breaks up with his girlfriend!! Yay! Right? Wrong! Instead of finally taking his chance with Melanie, he starts sleeping around with other women. Sorry, but that just did not sit well with me. And Melanie. I felt kinda bad for her. She was in love with someone that she could never be with. I was happy that she was respectful of the fact that Jameson had a girlfriend and backed off. But, I’m sorry to say, but she frustrated me too. I couldn’t understand why she would waste her life waiting around for Jameson. I really wanted her to move on and forget about Jameson.
I know it sounds like I didn’t like this read very much, but it did have some good moments. Things started looking up for me around the 50-60% mark. Jameson and Melanie finally made more sense. I actually enjoyed their push and pull at this point. Jameson did finally win me over in the end. There were some really great swoon-worthy moments between Melanie and Jameson. Also, I liked that there was a big mystery factor added into the story. There was an arsonist who seemed to be stalking Melanie. I liked trying to figure out who was sending her messages and gifts. I have an idea of who it is, but I’m sad to say that, that is one aspect that does not get resolved in this book. Hopefully, there will be some resolution in the next book. I know that this is supposed to be book 1 in a stand-alone series, so this will be really interesting to me, how this will all play out.
Overall, Fall for Me was a quick read. There were a few things that didn’t quite work for me. And even though this book wasn’t a home-run for me, I’m still glad I checked it out.

Melanie may only be home for the summer, but he’s having the hardest time staying away from her. Will Jameson ever open his eyes and see what is in front of him?
I have to say that when I read the synopsis of this story, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I ended up having a complete love/hate relationship with it. Fall for Me started off with a lot of potential. Jameson and Melanie have instant connection. But, Jameson has a girlfriend and Melanie won’t pursue anything further than a friendship with Jameson. Which was a good thing. My issue was Jameson. He didn’t give me the best first impression. If he was in a relationship, he had no business flirting with Melanie. And if said relationship was not working out, then he should have dumped his girlfriend. I had a hard time buying that he was going to break up with his girlfriend, once the lease on their apartment was over. I mean, who does that? Why would you willingly stay with someone that makes you unhappy. Plus, his girlfriend wasn’t all sweet and perfect. Some of the things she did, well, lets just say when he found out about one incident in particular, that should have been it! Relationship over. Also I hated that Jameson was stringing Melanie along. Wanting her to wait for him, but I didn’t feel that he ever gave her a reason to do so. And then, the icing on the cake: Jameson finally sees the light and breaks up with his girlfriend!! Yay! Right? Wrong! Instead of finally taking his chance with Melanie, he starts sleeping around with other women. Sorry, but that just did not sit well with me. And Melanie. I felt kinda bad for her. She was in love with someone that she could never be with. I was happy that she was respectful of the fact that Jameson had a girlfriend and backed off. But, I’m sorry to say, but she frustrated me too. I couldn’t understand why she would waste her life waiting around for Jameson. I really wanted her to move on and forget about Jameson.
I know it sounds like I didn’t like this read very much, but it did have some good moments. Things started looking up for me around the 50-60% mark. Jameson and Melanie finally made more sense. I actually enjoyed their push and pull at this point. Jameson did finally win me over in the end. There were some really great swoon-worthy moments between Melanie and Jameson. Also, I liked that there was a big mystery factor added into the story. There was an arsonist who seemed to be stalking Melanie. I liked trying to figure out who was sending her messages and gifts. I have an idea of who it is, but I’m sad to say that, that is one aspect that does not get resolved in this book. Hopefully, there will be some resolution in the next book. I know that this is supposed to be book 1 in a stand-alone series, so this will be really interesting to me, how this will all play out.
Overall, Fall for Me was a quick read. There were a few things that didn’t quite work for me. And even though this book wasn’t a home-run for me, I’m still glad I checked it out.

Josie's 4.5 Star Review
I am a huge fan of JC Emery and I have loved every book that I’ve read from her so when she was writing another book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Things that stood out for me in this book were that it was based in NYC, had a Firefighter and a sassy heroine. What else did I need? Let me say this book is a quick read but the author does not skip a beat with the drama, angst, sex and danger in this book. Fall For Me is told in alternate POV’s so we get to see how both main characters feel and what they are going through, which I love.
I really loved Melanie. She was a fun female lead. She has a mouth on her and her come backs had me laughing out loud so many times in the story. She is not afraid to speak her mind and she comes from money but she is not spoiled or selfish. She is visiting NYC for the summer with her parents where she meets Jameson. He’s a firefighter based in New York City. After meeting awkwardly in a men’s bathroom, the two hit it off. Jameson and Melanie have a connection that is felt the very first time you read about their encounter. The only problem is Jameson has a girlfriend and neither wants to be the bad person here.
Jameson, god how I loved him. He is strong, sexy, loyal, caring and lives to protect those he loves. Jameson has been in a relationship with his live in girlfriend Lydia for 5 years. Even though things are strained in their relationship he does not want to hurt her. Jameson never once questioned his loyalty to his girlfriend until he meets Melanie. Jameson wants Melanie but he knows he can’t promise her more than friendship until he ends things with Lydia.
Jameson and Melanie have a really strong connection that is innocent and pure but the more Jameson tries to do right by Lydia the more he risks losing Melanie. Melanie is awesome. She is not afraid to tell Jameson how she feels and that she wants more with him, but she is not going to continue to stand by on the side lines waiting for him to make a decision. OMG and Lydia, I wanted to feel for this character. She does things in this book where I found myself having a love/hate relationship with her.
There is some drama that happens. Jameson’s bother Hennessey also wants Melanie and since his brother is not in a position to take a shot, he decides he will. Jameson is put to the test because not only does he have to stand by and watch the woman he loves date his brother, but there is also an outside force trying to hurt him.
I not only loved the fact that this had a love triangle but also the fact that there was this element of danger. It added a lot of excitement to the story. Jameson has to make a decision and his indecisiveness can cost him Melanie. Can Jameson get over his aversion to Melanie’s money and end things with Lydia? Will Melanie be there for Jameson once he makes his final decision? If you are looking for a standalone that is engaging and will keep you interested then this one might just be right up your ally.

They are stubborn, and it was killing me. Jameson – how can you just stare at the very thing you wanted the most and allow someone to step in? How can you stay with someone who doesn’t make you happy at all? Well, in fairness to him, he kept Melanie in the friendzone much to the chagrin of everyone. He tried not to cheat, he tried to be loyal. There was this one time, a slight slip, but not the total crossing the line.
And I thought everything was going to be smooth when he finally got his freedom, only to find out that danger and some insecurities where lurking around the corner.
It was not only Melanie who waited but Jameson as well. But with waiting, they have built friendship which will ultimately be the foundation of their relationship. It was a long wait, a bit excruciating but when the wait was finally over – everything was worth it.
JC Emery wrote a sweet and romantic read that will frustrate you, make you swoon and will make you realize that good things come to those who wait. It’s a story of love and romance. Timing is indeed important when it comes to love and relationships.

Who else has read J.C.'s other work? I couldn't wait to get my greedy hands on this one. I am a huge fan of J.C.'s! Let start off a little different. Before I delve into my thoughts on the book, I want to discuss the author's previous work. (Don't worry, I have my reasons.) The past books I have read of hers have been gritty and captivating. They are more down and dirty reads. So those nay-sayers who didn't like her previous works, you don't need to overlook this one. It's nothing like her other works, I promise!
Okay.. On to this book. I am sitting here smiling as I try to figure out what can be said and what I need to leave out. We all love a good love story. Many love the fireman theme.,.. Me? I don't care the theme, so long as it isn't cheesy! No cheese here. I swear. Firemen. Flirting. Stalkers. Psycho girlfriends. This book has many great characteristics right off the bat that should have you ready to read.
This book had me from the first page. Engaging. Intriguing. Witty banter. I was hooked immediately! The story-line will have your heart pounding and your mind racing. I mean, come on... Unrequited love... Phycho stalker... Two brothers lusting after the same girl. It's guaranteed to not be boring, ever!
This story evolves in just the right way. J.C. kept me wanting more the whole way through. I will admit, I wasn't a Jameson fan a couple of times in the book. Although some situations fit his character, I just didn't like his excuse making for his actions. Typical male in that aspect. Pull up your pants and be a big boy!
The only thing I wasn't fond of was the ending... I am not going to give you the ending. For me, the ending didn't fit. There is a psycho stalker-arsonist after them throughout the book... One would expect there to be a HUGE cliffhanger. Now before you cliffhanger haters start griping, hear me out. I don't care what someone's feelings are on cliffhangers. Some storylines require them. They make the story that more powerful. I get that this is supposed to be a standalone, but really, it should have left me hanging a little harder. I wanted my jaw to plummet to the ground. I wanted to cuss at my Kindle. I just needed more.
Overall, this is a wonderful book. It is very entertaining and there is no dull moment in the story. My advice? One-click it. Soon. Immediately. On payday. Whenever. Just do it.

If you love firefighter romances then you’ll love this. I love the TV shows Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D so I was excited to read this. Hot firefighter? Yes. Please. Melanie Kincaid comes from a privileged family and is more than used to getting what she wants. Jameson Hayes follows in a long line of hard working family members. They have always worked hard for what they want and where they are now. But it seems neither Melanie or Jameson can have what they want no matter how much they want it.
“…but I want you to fall for me. I want to be what keeps you up at night and what puts a smile on your face in the morning.”
This review is hard to do because I don’t want to give anything away that could ruin the story for anyone. I’ll start off with why I gave it 3.5 smooches- the only reason I did is because I personally didn’t connect with it, there was something missing for me I can’t explain it and I was frustrated at myself because I really wanted to. Saying that though the story was pretty good. Melanie and Jameson have a really strong pull that they can’t help it and at times they don’t want to but either way its there and the chemistry between them is hot when they are together. Jameson has some complications in his life and Melanie not used to not getting what she wants doesn’t always make the best decisions but you forgive her because you can’t help but love her sassy and funny personality. “Seriously though. Penises are weird. They’re all cylindrical and they have a mushroom head. Weird.” Some situations in the book you may not like- but keep in mind its not always how it seems. There is also the angst and danger of the job they are in and how it effects everyone. I also loved the friendships and relationships that grew within both Melanie and Jameson’s families and regardless of not connecting with this one as much as I’d like to I can’t wait for the next one to get more of the Hayes’ brothers.

I’m sorry but IMHO the H, Jameson, was a big dirtbag. He has a girlfriend when he meets the h, Melanie, and they have an instant connection. BUT he lives with the girlfriend and he doesn’t want to be that guy. Melanie doesn’t want him to be that guy. Fine. No problem.
Then he becomes that guy. Where to begin?
Bottom line: he’s an ass and she’s stupid for putting up with his crap. The only reason I gave it 2 stars and not 1 was there were actual moments when they were sweet together and I wanted them to have a HEA. Unfortuntately there was much too much douchery in between those moments.

Fall For Me by JC Emery was everything I hoped it would be and more. When JC let me know she was writing this book, I was so excited and it went beyond my expectations. This is the first book I’ve read of hers and I’m so glad I did. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
I really enjoyed the characters. They definitely make the book what it is. It’s such a wonderful story filled with romance, suspense, and firefighters. You read that right, the brothers are firefighters. What more could you ask for?
I loved how out there Melanie was. She spoke her mind and never held back. I wish I was more like her because she was definitely a strong character. I loved her spunk and how funny she could be. I was really glad that she met the Hayes family because they each bring out a part of her she never really knew was in her until them. I loved they all became a family. Then we meet Jameson, yep I LOVED his character. He was so strong and fierce. I loved his and Melanie’s instant connection and pull to one another. Just prepare yourself for the pull and tug they go through. I felt so bad for them that no matter how much they wanted to be together there was always something in the way. But by the end of the story things come to light and you fall in love with their chemistry.
So if you love reading a story that pushing the limits, leaves you on the edge of your seat at times, but keeps your heart filled with little beats then this is the story for you.
I give Fall For Me 4 out of 5 FALLEN STARS!!!

It seems that I may be in the minority on this one, I liked it. Did it have some problems, sure. Jameson was an ass at times, when he didn't immediately make things right with her after he split with Lydia, that was super shitty. When he slept with a bunch of "badge bunnies" to sow his wild oats before cementing his relationship with Mel. Super shitty.
But he jumped out of a helicopter to rescue her when she was kidnapped. Wonderful!!
And when he says things like this....
"This is what my love looks like. Here, on this hill, waiting for my girl. For as many hours, as many days, as many years as it takes. I'm here. Even if you'll never be ready for me, I'll still be here, waiting for you."
Can't wait for the next one!

She has a streak of crazy in her but it is the interesting kind of crazy, not the kill you in your sleep kind of crazy. Which makes her a perfect match for Jameson.

There was this one time, a slight slip, but not the total crossing the line and both felt horrible and guilty about it. And I thought everything was going to be smooth when he finally got his freedom, only to find out that danger and some insecurities where lurking around the corner.

I almost could not put this book down it so good, I cannot wait to read about the rest of the Hayes clan and catch up with these two in future installments of this series. Go ahead and one click you will not be disappointed.

Fall For Me by JC Emery follows Melanie Kincaid, a trust-fund baby with a sassy attitude who’s never really fit in among the female elite. Of course, she doesn’t really mind that at all. And when she bumps into a girl named Royal at the Heroes in Action benefit ball they become instant friends. Those who bond in the bathroom; bond forever. Plus it helps that Royal is the only normal girl there who doesn’t have her nose stuck up in the air. That same night, coincidentally in the same bathroom, Mel also meets another instant connection — Jameson Hayes. Jameson is one of NYFD finest and works for one of the oldest ladder companies in Manhattan alongside his two brothers (it’s a family thing). Gorgeous and flirty, Jameson isn’t looking for the complication that Mel brings, but he can’t stop thinking about her either. Soon Mel and Jameson try their best to fight the crazy attraction between them, even though they’re both falling and hard. It doesn’t help matters that Jameson is already in a steady relationship and that his brother Hennessy is also attracted to Mel. Add in a famous arsonist with his sights set on Mel and these two have a lot of obstacles to overcome. Will they end up falling together in the end?
Let me start off by saying, who doesn’t love a hero in uniform?! *Sigh* Jameson just screamed sexy alpha male who I wanted to get know. Emery does a great job of setting the scene for this novel. I loved how the two main characters first met and how even though they were instantly attracted to each other, Mel respected that Jameson had a girlfriend. She wanted him to be the good guy she knew he was and didn’t become the other woman physically–although cases could be made for emotionally. I also loved that Mel was a strong character. She was independent and checked her emotions when she needed to. I also loved how she wasn’t afraid to confront Jameson on multiple times. Instead of playing “what’s he really thinking?” games, she just plain out asked him on more than one occasion. Go girl!
Jameson on the other hand I could shake sometimes. I knew he was trying to do right by Lydia, his livein girlfriend of 5 years, but if he knew that he didn’t love her he shouldn’t have been stringing her along for so long. Then again, I can also understand that he didn’t fully know how much he had fallen out of love with her until he met Mel. Either way, that situation could have been handled a little bit better on his part. With that said, it does’t excuse what Lydia ended up doing in the novel to try and keep him. Ugh that was so not cool Lyd. Anyway, Jameson lived up to his swoon-worthy description. He was flirty, sweet and definitely showed off his hero-characteristics. He remained a good guy throughout the novel until I wanted to shake him for acting like a guy when things should have been progressing better between him and Mel, but I’ll just let you experience that on your own. You know how alpha males can get sometimes *eye rolls*.
Overall, Emery did a great job of characterization. I really felt these characters as well as the secondary ones were well-rounded. The Hayes family was adorable and I loved how instantly they folded Mel into their lives. They all have had their struggles and I hope we get to see more of the Hayes in the later novels of the Ladder Company series. Mel’s side of the family was also well developed. Claire, Mel’s sister, was seen more than her parents; although Mel’s father made more of an appearance toward the end.
I only had a few problems with the novel. The timing wasn’t always there for me. I felt like the transitions could have been smoother from suspense/action moment to the next. I felt like the suspense wasn’t always there because those scenes happened so quickly and then it just jumped to everything kind of being alright and then back into something else happening. I felt like this could have been a little smoother, so that the suspense lasted throughout the novel. Also, the timing in general also seemed a little choppy–from summer to Christmas to next summer–it just seemed again like it could have been a bit smoother of a transition. Also the only other thing that I wish I could have seen a bit more of was Mel’s personality and also more interactions with Royal. Jameson would mention that Mel was over a lot and that she was this witty, made-friends-with-everyone type of girls, but I never really got to see that. This was more “tell” than “show” for me in the novel. Otherwise, Mel’s character was still spot on for me. I just wanted to see more of her personality shine, because she was an awesome character. I also wanted to see more Royal and Mel scenes because these girls were best friends now and we didn’t get to see a whole lot of bestie moments. Maybe if we get a Royal story…*nudge, nudge* :)
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel. It had the right amount of chemistry and I was rooting for Mel and Jameson throughout the novel. On top of that, the added suspense kept the pages turning for me. So if you’re looking for a quick romance read with a hunky firefighter, a headstrong main character and some suspense thrown in–then Fall For Me should be your next read!

This is a will they won't they romance that kinda works but I just feel something was missing. Maybe it's that I just didn't really like the main characters. The end isn't a cliff hanger but leaves the story in a way to encourage you to read the next book.

At that moment she knew they would be best friends. What she didn’t expect was Royal’s older Brother Jameson. He is the only male in the room that has gotten her blood boiling and she knows that it may not be best the idea to get involved with her friends brother but the attraction she has for him is undeniable.

When I read the synopsis I knew I had to read this book. Tell me what girl doesn’t love a man in uniform? This is the first book by J.C. Emery I have read and I’m hooked. Both Melanie and Royal are fun loving, larger than life woman who you can’t help but envy. I love that Royal followed in her family’s footsteps and didn’t let her brother have all the fun by joining them in the family career as a fire fighter. Melanie may have a trust fund but she isn’t like any of the kids with whom grew up. She’s a strong independent woman with the patience of a saint in my books. Jameson was the one who frustrated me the most. There were times when I wanted to yell at him and times when I fell in love with him. We had a love/hate relationship but I mostly loved him. This story had me hook from the moment Melanie and Jameson met and I couldn’t put the book down. The attraction between these two was undeniable but like with anything else life gets in the way and it leaves you wondering if they were even meant to be together. The reason I only gave this book 4 stars was that the ending left me feeling like it was quite finished up. A little more to the story before the book ended might have increased my rating. Don’t get me wrong, this is an awesome book and a great start to the series. I highly recommend it and can’t wait for the next book!

3.5 Starlet Stars
This was my very first JC Emery read and I have to say I truly enjoyed this one. I had a few issues, mostly with the way it ended but overall the story kept me on the edge of my seat and left me begging for more. JC's writing is spot on and she really has well developed main characters, as well as secondary characters. In this book we follow the story of Melanie & Jameson... These two will make you want to pull your hair out, and at times I was worried that things were going to go too far that it would end up destroying them both...
Melanie is a socialite, her self made millionaire father, landed them in the lap of luxury. Which is a place Melanie just doesn't fit into. From the very beginning she will have you laughing at her antics when it comes to dealing with the snobby elite of Manhattan's finest... Not only does Melanie not fit in but neither does her new best friend, Royal, who like Melanie doesn't fit with the "in crowd", they bond over using the men's bathroom and being a lookout for one another. But when Jameson needs to use the restroom too and he finds Melanie standing guard, sparks fly, tension grows, passion flares, and all while standing in a bathroom doorway. But alas, some things aren't meant to be, and no matter how much Melanie wants him, one thing stands in her way...
Jameson is just F.I.N.E. fine! I loved him from the minute he jumped into the story. I was so excited at the prospect of these two till we find out that he isn't exactly available. *frown* and so begins the game of cat and mouse between Jameson and Mel... Their back and forth, will we, won't we, relationship will drive you bat *sh!t* crazy at times. Most of the time I wanted to hit him more then I loved him. It wasn't till the evil woman in his life *cringes* Lydia, makes a final move that destroys their relationship for good that you finally think things are going to work out for him and Mel. However, it doesn't quite go down the way you would expect... Jameson struggles internally with his worth and his feelings about it, Mel is used to a lifestyle, that as a firefighter, he just can't provide for her. But we all know that making assumptions, typically doesn't lead us in the right direction.
All throughout there is an underlying suspense to this novel, there is someone and something working against them, we don't know who or what, or even why at this point... This was the only part that I struggled with. I felt like this plot line was left a little bit too vague, and felt like it wasn't fully developed. While I understand that there are more books and this story line will build, I did feel the book ended a little abruptly. I truly hope that we will see more of Jameson and Mel in future installments, cause I didn't quite feel like their story was over yet. But that shouldn't deter you, because the book was written very well, kept me flipping pages furiously, made me fall in love with Jameson's brothers especially Hennessy, and left me wanting more of this series... Passion, love, lust, angst, this book truly had all the feels...

A book about a firefighter and heroine whose name is Melanie…. How could I possibly not want to pick this up??? I really enjoyed this book, loved the angst of the cat and mouse chase that take place throughout the entire book.
The connection between Melanie and Jameson is instantaneous, totally love at first sight but unfortunately for the both of them, timing isn’t on their side. With Jameson in a long-term though crumbing relationship, Melanie is dead set on keeping him in the “good guy” category so instead of acting on their feelings, they end up in the friend zone all the while tempting one another to the brink of insanity. I myself felt dizzy from the back and forth between these two where at times the tension caused such an upheaval of emotions to course through me. I really liked Melanie’s character because she seemed genuinely good and free of malice. A chatter box in her own right, there were many times in this book where I’d find myself giggling at the things that would come out of her mouth.
There were some scenes in this book that absolutely took my breath away for the mere fact that the author had made them so real and one in particular that stands out to me was the blowout between Jameson and his long time live in girlfriend, Lyda. I was impressed by how intense the entire scene played out all the while keeping every emotion that flickered on their faces and the lethal, heart breaking words that were spewed so unbelievably believable. I’m not sure exactly why that resonated so much with me but I think it was because of how honest the whole thing played out. It was odd and again just very impressionable. Another thing that stood out to me was that the author kept my attention with the back and forth between Melanie and Jameson sans “hottie tottie” scenes.
So what’s with the 3 stars? Well, there were also many times in this book that seemed jumbled up, moments I found myself lost because I had no idea what anyone was talking about. The dialogue a bit too fast paced for my taste which I think was why I found myself having to turn back on certain parts of the book. But what really did me in was how the book ended. I kept pressing my Kindle screen thinking “there has to be more!” and it wasn’t even a dang cliffhanger! It was sorta just hanging wide open and I was so confused like I felt robbed of my time and of my investment in the characters and their story. I don’t know.. Quite frankly, days after finishing I’m still really baffled by it. I understand that this is book 1 of a series but I also understand that the series follows all the Hayne’s brothers so it’s not as if Melanie and Jameson’s story will specifically continue so why the rush at the end of the story and why wasn’t there closure? Sigh. To make matters worse, the element of suspense that was just starting to blaze was quickly doused without answers.
So while I liked the majority of this book, I wish that the take-off was as good as the lead up because I wanted Jameson to finally prove himself to be that good guy that Melanie deserved and I wanted to see so much more of how their story together unfolded.
The connection between Melanie and Jameson is instantaneous, totally love at first sight but unfortunately for the both of them, timing isn’t on their side. With Jameson in a long-term though crumbing relationship, Melanie is dead set on keeping him in the “good guy” category so instead of acting on their feelings, they end up in the friend zone all the while tempting one another to the brink of insanity. I myself felt dizzy from the back and forth between these two where at times the tension caused such an upheaval of emotions to course through me. I really liked Melanie’s character because she seemed genuinely good and free of malice. A chatter box in her own right, there were many times in this book where I’d find myself giggling at the things that would come out of her mouth.
There were some scenes in this book that absolutely took my breath away for the mere fact that the author had made them so real and one in particular that stands out to me was the blowout between Jameson and his long time live in girlfriend, Lyda. I was impressed by how intense the entire scene played out all the while keeping every emotion that flickered on their faces and the lethal, heart breaking words that were spewed so unbelievably believable. I’m not sure exactly why that resonated so much with me but I think it was because of how honest the whole thing played out. It was odd and again just very impressionable. Fall For Me is the first book in the Ladder Company Series by JC Emery.
When nature calls and the line for the ladies room resembles peak hour traffic, Melanie Kincaid joins forces with Royal Hayes and heads to higher ground. The men's room upstairs, that is. Melanie doesn't see the point of being ladylike if it lands you with a burst bladder. She doesn't see the point of being ladylike at all. She's also not shy in letting Royal's brother, Jameson, know that she's attracted while blocking him from entering the bathroom so Royal can do her thing.
There's only one problem. Jameson has a girlfriend. Not that he really wants her, but because of circumstances, he's stuck with her for now.
Despite telling each other they weren't going to betray his girlfriend, they fuel temptation by spending time together with and without an audience, never physically crossing a line but for one small kiss.
When Jameson's girlfriend, Lydia, does something unforgivable, the circumstances that kept them together finally become surmountable.
By this time, Jameson's brother, Hennessy has let his interest in Melanie be known, and a deranged stalker is sending nasty messages to Melanie. The excitement ratchets up from here.
Which brother will she choose and will she even survive to make that decision?
Melanie is bold, straightforward and a little crass. She has been spoilt by her father wanting to provide everything he didn't have, but she doesn't take it for granted. She genuinely cares for people and makes friends everywhere she goes.
She knows that Jameson's feelings for Lydia pale in comparison to what he feels for Melanie. That's what makes it so hard to stay away from him when she knows she should. Still, she feels like she’s not enough incentive to make Jameson leave.
Jameson assures her he has no choice. In Jameson's mind, he’s stuck because of a lack of finances. He continues to carry on his relationship with Lydia, though he's in love with Melanie. I felt a bit icky about this. He didn't ponder all the options.
Lydia's feelings aren't fully considered by these two. She might not be a nice person, but she deserves the truth about the lack of a future with Jameson. Her actions are deplorable, but she is desperate when she realises she's losing the man she genuinely loves.
The situation is messy with all three of them not so innocent victims to the turmoil.
Jameson certainly doesn't lack courage. He redeems himself when he puts Melanie's happiness and safety ahead of his own wants and needs.
The arsonist makes things interesting and keeps you guessing. The second half of the book is definitely better.
Fall For Me leaves you wanting to know more about Jameson's family and the crazy stalker remains on the loose.
It was an easy enjoyable read. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

It is very rare for me to rate a book 2 stars but I felt I had to on this occasion. It may be I am a little harsher than normal in my critique as I have read a spate of books where the guy is a douche and the girl is a bit of a doormat and I have reached my tolerance level of both. Apologies in advance for Fall for Me taking the brunt of my exasperation of this type of characterisation.
I will say Fall for Me is compelling; I can honestly say I couldn’t put it down but in the same way you follow a train wreck, I kept hoping it would get better and the characters would redeem themselves in some way, alas it was not meant to be.
I will say I loved all of the peripheral characters and JC Emery has paved the way for each of the Hayes siblings separate stories in a very clever way while maintaining the thriller plot thread that is woven into the story. The foundation has been cleverly constructed for this element of the plot and I am intrigued as to how it is going to play out.
However, I had the most issues with the romance and the romantic leads within Fall for Me. Firstly, we have a case of insta-love even though Jameson is already in a relationship. Don’t get me wrong there isn’t cheating in this story unless you count the characters imaginations. However, Jameson is supposed to be a ‘good guy’ and at no time is he completely honest with either Melanie or his girlfriend. Then there is the time period following the break-up of his long term relationship with much (unnecessary) drama; instead of professing his love for Mel, Jameson embarks on a series of well documented hook-ups. This guy needs a lesson on how to keep it in his pants. I have to say it was this aspect that seriously affected my connection to him and made me question his depth of feeling toward Mel.
Then there is Mel herself, I had high hopes for her at the beginning of the story with her feistiness and sass, alongside her adorable ramblings added to my expectations of her character development. Sadly, instead of becoming the strong, independent, take control woman I thought she could be, Mel turned into a love-struck, immature girl that may as well have had doormat tattooed on her forehead. I found her adoration of Jameson and lack of concern for his ‘activities’ a little pathetic. For me, there were some seriously cringe-worthy moments regarding Mel and Jameson’s relationship. I did not find their relationship the slightest bit romantic and I think that is where I felt let down the most with Fall for Me.
Ladder Company has the potential to be a fantastic series, the basis and concept are sound however, I did feel as if the characters need to be stronger and more likable.

Several times this came really close to being a four star read, but in the end the parts I had a problem with seemed to outweigh the positive stuff.
This is a new adult novel about 21 year old college student Melissa and her relationship with twenty-something fire fighter Jamieson. For the most part I liked Mel, she was sweet and funny and seemed like a character it would be nice to hang out with, the only part of her personality that didn't resonate with me was her lack of a spine where Jamieson is concerned. Jamieson is complete and utter dog. He's in a relationship (and living with) another woman, but persists in flirting with Mel (as she does with him which doesn't present her in a good light). He maintains a sexual relationship with his girlfriend (though he thinks of Mel...creepy!) because they'd both be financially crippled if they broke up!! WHAT so he's basically prostituting the pair of them!! How is that okay? Even when he's broken up with the girlfriend he continues to whore himself about whilst he waits for Mel to graduate from college, because 'he can't do anything' whilst she's away. Again, WHAT! How about waiting for her (the way she does for him) rather than sleeping with anything that moves? On the one hand I have a problem with the double standards of their situation, he wants her to wait for him and not be with anyone else, whilst he first has a girlfriend and then sleeps with half of New York. But even if he gave her the same freedom as he has himself I wouldn't like it. He talks about loving Melissa but all of his behaviour argues that he doesn't have a clue what love actually is.
I also didn't really like the way the story finished. Yes technically this is a stand alone, but there isn't actually any resolution to the arsonist storyline. I'll read the next one because the arson stuff is pressure tense and I really want so see how it will eventually be resolved, but I was still left feeling pretty disappointed as this story had a lot of unrealised potential.

Fall For Me is the first book in the Ladder Company Series by JC Emery. It starts out with Jameson Hayes. All of his siblings are named after types of whiskey. Naming your children after booze seems a bit weird but once you meet the rest of the Hayes family you will forget that it is and fall in love.
Melanie Kincaid has had a privileged life. She is not like the usual snobby, rich girls she is caring, friendly, and doesn’t flaunt her money around. She isn’t afraid to speak
her mind either which to me was the greatest part of the book the banter between Jameson and Melanie.
The book starts out at a society event and Melanie needs to use the bathroom and meets up with someone waiting on line they proceed to head to another bathroom and decide to use the men's room. While guarding the door for her new friend Royal and a gorgeous man tries to get in.
"You're the most beautiful door- blocking woman I've ever had the pleasure of being held up by".
" The most beautiful?
Yes, baby Jesus, please!

"Oh, crap"
"I'm sorry."
"Beautiful, huh?'
"Gorgeous"

The banter in the book between Jameson and his family - Jack, Hennessey,Rae and Royal and parents will make you laugh and feel all gooey inside.
