Jacqui Rose is a novelist who hails from Manchester and South Yorkshire, though she now lives in the South East in the countryside, surrounded by her horses and lots of animals. Jacqui first came to appreciate the power of the written word when as a child she charged her classmates a packet of sherbet dips to write their essays for them. Adopted at a young age and always a daydreamer, she felt isolated growing up in a small mining village in South Yorkshire and it was her writing which kept her company. Jacqui has written a variety of things including stand-up comedy, radio drams and screenplays. She is published by HarperCollins and Pan Macmillan and has written over 16 bestselling novels. She is also collaborating with Martina Cole on Martina's new novel, Loyalty.
Jacqui Rose also writes under the name of J P Rose (not to be confused with the American author!) and has written, The Haunting of Tyrese Walker her first teen/YA novel.
We are back in Soho again a few years later from Taken where we meet up again with Alfie Jennings and the rest of the characters. This time there is a new threat...The Triads are here and wanting to take over Soho, Alfie has had warnings but no one is going to take his precious club Whispers so for him there is only one thing left to do and thats Disobey
My thoughts... I'm a fan of Jacqui Rose and loved Taken But for some reason I couldn't connect with this one. Maybe because it was written a few years later but I felt the characters seemed so removed from Taken. Some events from before were not brought up again in this book . Which although wasn't a problem it still made the characters feel different. The introduction of Chloe Jane Alfies niece and some of the decisions she made I was like..
Although it didn't work for me this time. Alfie and Vaughn are still great characters and the introduction of Lin and Mr Lee makes it all the more chilling.

TAKEN was the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it. This time I didn't enjoy this. I really couldn't connect to quite a few plots.
We have prostitution, lies, violence, murder and very bad language within the pages. I get how this is as and where the story has to be, but it was nothing like TAKEN and written [for me] in a way that the author was pandering to the needs of her audience, a bit like a comedian who has to swear every other word because its expected of him.
I just couldn't get past all of that. Blame it on my age!
Thank you HarperCollins UK, Avon via Net Galley for my copy
Jacqui Rose is back with her sixth book Disobey and she is getting better with every new thriller she has written. Martina Cole finally has competition for the dark heart of the London Underworld and the petty jealousies that it brings along with the rivalry and how they need each other to succeed in their world. I especially love that the female characters in all over Jacqui Rose’s books are strong central characters that are not merely the eye candy on the periphery. Disobey is a fantastic gripping and thrilling read that grabs you by the throat and keeps hold of you all the way to the end.
Alfie Jennings one of the longstanding faces of the London Underworld based in his kingdom of Soho is playing with fire, instead of respecting the unwritten rule of illegal casinos are left to the Chinese he can see an easy way to make a few quid. The Chinese do not take kindly to Jennings trying to muscle in on their money making and start a war which only they with the triads will ever win.
At the same time his teenage niece Chloe-Jane appears in London looking for somewhere to live and for a bit of family support that she has never had. Rejected and alone in London Chloe-Jane is offered a job little does she know what world of trouble that will bring upon her. It is to her credit even with trouble running all the way through her that there is a spark that wins her grudging respect and eventually their help in her survival.
The war against the Chinese takes no prisoners and is targeting Alfie Jennings and any of his associates, and if people get in their way they will end up dead. The situation is dire and rapidly getting worse and for once the ‘faces’ need to work together to save Soho and Chloe who could die at any time at the hands of the Chinese.
This is a fantastic pacey read that grips you from the beginning and keeps hold of you throughout the story, and it shows the underworld in all its ugly grittiness where there is no real glamour. This really will make you turn the pages and even though some of the characters have appeared in previous books this may be their final bow but I do hope we get to see Chloe-Jane again.
Betrayed is a fantastic gangland crime thriller where we see that it is not a glamorous would but most definitely a tough world. I really am looking forward to Jacqui Rose’s next book.
yalla let's write a review for every book I read hek hek e3din bel bet woo!
so I got this book for free in Cyprus back in 2017, kenna 3am ndour bi day3a wa iz shefna ketob masfoufin barrat bet w maktoub 3a war2a: FOR FREE! fa yalla ashet kteben, hayda w The Last Song .. yalli ma 2rit wala wa7ad menon la halla2 lol! typical Rita..
Anyway, the book was fun, and I felt with the characters.. buttt a LOT of swear words ma ba3ref ma bada hal add.. and the writing style was meh.
What a quick read that was! After being poorly for a while this has got me back into reading how I was before!
Good plot and followed each character with ease - usually confuses me when there are a lot of characters to follow but this one I found easy to follow as the characters were explained well and were used a lot in the book.
I was hoping for a bit more towards the end of it and was disappointed when I didn’t get it hence why I only gave it a 4 ⭐️. But apart from that a good read and would recommend!
A thriller set in the underworld in Soho by Jacqui Rose. It’s a violent world with some very shady characters. Some of the characters feature in previous books- but this can be read as a stand alone quite easily.
At the start of the book Alfie is having a meeting in a café when a rival gang storms in. He’s set up an illegal casino and there is war between the factions. This puts everyone in mortal danger. His niece Chloe, is kidnapped and they have to try and rescue her.
It’s not a genre I read often but was gripped by the story.
With many thanks to Harper Collins Uk, Avon and Net Galley for the chance to read this one.
I’ve just re read this book to refresh my memory before I read Jacqui’s new book. Even the second time it doesn’t disappoint. A gritty gangster story which tells that in times of adversity they all pull together. I recommend this book and am definitely looking forward to reading the next book. Welcome back Jacqui I love your books
Jacqui obviously knows a lot about London underground characters and I cannot deny her books are both gripping and exciting to read. The only drawback that I cannot easily stomach is the frequent use of unsavory language, although I am sure such language is the norm among such underground characters that she writes about.
I got this book for Christmas as a stocking filler and I know it was purchased in the pound shop. It was not worth a pound. I found the characters almost pantomime like. So stereotypical and boring I couldn’t care less about any of them particularly Chloe-Jane who I think I was supposed to feel sorry for. There are kids out there like her, genuinely vulnerable, at immense risk of sexual exploitation and harm of every category. Chloe-Jane makes a mockery of that. She’s turned into a caricature with her boob job which unintentionally I’m sure, becomes a reason for her sexual abuse. That’s not what the author was going for but she messed up and handled an incredibly sensitive topic badly. Perhaps if I had read other books in this series, I would have enjoyed this one more. It has some tense writing, most of it in the last 100 pages if that. The description leads you to think the kidnap occurs near the beginning but it doesn’t. It’s near the end after you have clawed your way through a load of unnecessary drivel and dialogue. It’s corny and cheesy rather than gritty and ends like a Scooby Doo cartoon with all the characters laughing at a really bad joke.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
There is an air of 'Martina Cole' around books and stories like this, and whereas that's not at all a bad thing, it can sometimes mean that parts of stories can sound repetitive. Fortunately, there aren't that many parts like that in this book and the focus on family and friendship - even in the face of huge uphill struggles - was something that really appealed to me and kept me turning the pages.
Excellent!!! I enjoyed every bit of this story! Easy paced page turner! The plot was extremely gripping and nail-biting! I wanted to read Jacqui Rose as she has been co-writing with Martina Cole the last few years, and the two of them together are seller! I fell in love with all these characters
I loved Alfie's legit Tom Hardy vibes!
Her writing is crisp, smooth, and oh so funny! Her British one-liners had me laughing our t load so many times .
I was expecting this book to be much better. Even though the premise is quite good, I did not find it gripping at all. The characters failed to draw me in. Even during parts that were action-packed, something seemed to be missing.
Slow start but got interesting as I got to know all the characters and that’s when the storyline picked up pace and was a page turner. Looking forward to more books by JR
How is this Jacqui Rose's sixth book? It doesn't seem five minutes since I read Taken, yet here we are. Two books a year from one of your favourite authors is a real treat indeed, especially when the quality of those reads only ever seems to increase. I did wonder just what Jacqui would do with Disobey to set it apart from her other books, whilst still retaining that addictive and authentic quality that keeps readers returning to her books.
What I have always enjoyed about Jacqui's books is that they exist within the same world, some books featuring characters from previous books in passing or in a bigger role. In Disobey all those faces are back, having a meeting in Lola's cafe when the Triads storm the place, lives are in danger and there's a battle brewing for control of Soho. Once again Alfie Jennings can't take no for an answer, and his greed and rash decisions once again find not only him, but those close to him in mortal danger. Alfie Jennings, more EastEnders' Alfie Moon most of the time, but he has enjoyed some success as a face but is once again letting greed cloud his judgement, setting up an illegal casino in one of his clubs after he was warned by the Triads not to.
Jacqui Rose has never failed to come up with some truly despicable villains, and she always delivers with those brutal scenes of violence that almost make you want to look away but it's impossible to do so. The leader of the Triads is a particularly evil individual. Usually with just having a couple of main characters and then the villains, it becomes pretty obvious that the book will end with the main characters being victorious, with having all of Jacqui's previous characters in the one book, coming together to take on the Triads and save their little part of Soho, I was actually wondering who would come out on top especially with a couple of jaw dropping moments throughout. With plenty of twists along the way, and with a fast-moving plot, this is a book most readers will struggle to put down.
You could say things end a little too nicely, but the book's conclusion was definitely a satisfying one, and reminded me just how much I love these characters that Jacqui has created. I highly recommend Disobey and think returning readers will definitely enjoy and appreciate it. Those new to Jacqui's work I would suggest going back and reading the previous books, yet I suppose this could be read and enjoyed as a standalone but it would be more enjoyable knowing the characters and the history they all share beforehand. Jacqui Rose continues to be one of my favourite authors, and I can't wait to see what she brings us next.

My Review
There are a few main characters within this tale to be honest, Alfie Jenkins is just one of them and the catalyst to all the terror that follows. Alfie has been known to break the rules, behave selfishly and care about number one only, this time his actions will touch everyone he cares about. When he disobeys the rules he brings down the rein of terror of the Chinese Triads and soon the people of Soho and those closest to Alfie will pay.
This is a dark and gritty story of how one person can break a respected pact between "The Faces" of Soho and the Triads. A girl looking for acceptance and love after being rejected for years by her family, comes to her last hope, her uncle Alfie looking for acceptance. However Chloe-Jane tends to have trouble follow her and soon gets herself caught up in her own problems as well as uncle Alfies. The bond between family and friendships will be pushed to the limit, can Alfie redeem himself or will he prove to the selfish, lying and dangerous individual he has proven to be thus far.
A story filled with bad language, treachery, friendship, prostitution, violence, anger, murder and mayhem to name but a few of the issues covered in this book. There is a lot of testosterone, name calling and questionable actions of some of the key players in this story. Despite that it is an engaging and gritty story that draws you in and leaves each chapter hard to put down as you want to know what happens next to each of the characters. Whilst there are many dark elements to it, there is also some light and happiness, that even in the midst of hardship and horror, bravery and good can still be found. 3/5 for me this time, thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. I have read this author before and met some of the characters, I would advise reading those before picking this one up. You can read this as a stand alone however I think knowing the background of some of the characters will add to your enjoyment.
To start with I found this book quite difficult to get into. Set in Soho this story introduces you to the "Faces of London" the men that run Soho, Alfie, Vaughn, Johnny, Frankie, Tommy and Del. I'm not sure if it was because I was tired when I started this book but I felt quite overwhelmed with the characters and getting to grips with them at the beginning. After reading a few chapters and getting some sleep I picked it back up again and I'm glad I did.
The Faces have all come together and put their differences aside to sort out the problems hitting the streets of Soho. The Triads that have taken over the neighbouring China Town hold a grudge and these men are not to be messed with. Mr Lee and his right hand man Lin are horrible men and reading some of the things they do in the story, even now they make my skin crawl. Alfie's to blame for Soho's troubles but he wont admit it even to himself, there's always an excuse.
Throughout the book we get to know Lola, who owns the café. An older lady who I would say is the mum of Soho. We meet Franny, Alfie's other half and Casey, Vaughn's other half. These women have been brought up in Soho and have balls and wont stand for any nonsense from the men. Chloe-Jane is Alfie's 17 year old niece, who just want's to be part of a family and be loved but she's not had a good childhood and her Uncle Alfie just doesn't want to know.
Disobey is a gritty, hard-hitting thriller with murder, sex gangs but also family. Family that may not be through blood but family that stick together even though bridges need to be built and many wrongs have been done. There's twist and turns in the story the keep you turning the pages.
I've read a couple of Martina Cole's books and this is quite similar, I'd say it's not a book for the faint hearted and if you like hard hitting thrillers this is definitely for you.
I have continually enjoyed Jacqui Rose books and have not yet been disappointed. My favourite however was Dishonour which was her best to date in my opinion. With this latest release featuring characters from previous books I was really looking forward to it. Alfie Jennings is a character that I didn’t like all that much at the beginning but eventually he grew on me. What I was chuffed about was the return of some fantastic characters from previous books such as Franny Doyle, Vaughn Sadler and Del Williams.
The book starts off really well and you are thrown straight into the dire situation it seems Soho is now in. With some of the well-known faces having all returned to London they have no idea that the Triads who they are up against are ready for an all-out war. Alfie seems to be at the middle of everything and when his niece Chloe-Jane rocks up it seems that things rapidly go from bad to worse.
There is plenty to keep the reader entertained pretty much from the get-go and there wasn’t a moment where there wasn’t something going on. As the book gets towards the halfway point it seems to ratchet up in terms of fear factor and when Chloe-Jane gets involved without realising it, you just know that the outcome cannot be good.
I found myself turning the pages quickly and totally immersing myself in this latest tale. I had a couple of minor niggles, but nothing much to write home about and thoroughly enjoyed this latest book. I must say though that I think this book should be where it ends for certain characters that are reaching a point where they don’t need to return. Although this wasn’t a 5 star read for me (that was most definitely Dishonour!) this was another cracking read and I will as always look forward to the next one.

My thoughts
I have read and enjoyed other books by Jacqui Rose. And although this was a great read. It felt like I was a good way in before it really grabbed me.
I enjoyed the story line, and I liked most of the characters, hated the one's you are supposed to hate. We kick off with it all kicking off in Soho. A few of the past faces are faced with trying to sort out the Triads who seem to be causing havoc all around Soho and trying to take over. But why are they out for trouble. Has someone upset them. And who or how can they find out. This book starts off at a steady pace, and it was half way through before i really got stuck into it. Then I just wanted to read and read. I think Jacqui has written another great book here, and as usual I can not wait to read more from this author.
I think its becoming harder and harder to write a book in this genre that isn't the same old same old. And Jacqui has done really well with this one. It is an enjoyable read, and I don't think fans will be disappointed with this book.
thank you to netgalley and to harpercollins uk, avon for the advanced copy. I've got to be honest, to start with I didn't think this book was going to be my cup of tea. Never really been into gangland warfare but as I got into the story I started to really enjoy it. The female characters were all really strong and likeable and I think reading how strong a roles they played in this sort of environment made it all the more enjoyable. Would actually like to see this adapted for television as think it would make a great series.
This book is what you call a page turner! You can't actually put it down, from the very first chapter I was hooked. There are many different characters, some from earlier books but this could still be read as a standalone. I have read Jacqui's other books, I am a fan and although this wasn't my favourite book I enjoyed it immensely. Highly recommended for all crime readers, if you enjoy books from the likes of Martina Cole you will not be disappointed with this book.
Another great thriller from Jacqui Rose and the pages seem to turn themselves. Although Disobey is good as a stand-alone novel it sees the return of characters from previous books and their development is a fundamental part of the enjoyment, so I would advise reading them first. Fast paced and not for the faint-hearted as there’s a lot of bad language, sex and violence. Great female lead as always and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment!
