A huge thank you to the author, Kristine Jones for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this story and sharing it with me!!
I think that the main thing here is that I was unfortunately not the target audience for this book. It has an interesting plot and it has a good presence for the “Mothers” (the gods in the book).
The sibling dynamics are so accurate to real life that I did enjoy that quite a bit too. The bickering between the sisters and the way they could read each other’s minds felt very accurate to my real life and my relationship with my siblings.
Unfortunately that is not what I look for in a book. The whole thing never slowed down. The actual story has to exposition, you’re just launched into it. I felt like I didn’t get to know the characters at all at the beginning. It felt like a lot of the relationships didn’t develop on paper as much as they should have. All of the characters just sort of said “sure, okay” when their whole life was upended by gods they barely even believed in.
It just felt unrealistic to me and frustrating because I didn’t know the characters well enough to understand why they would do that.
I think I’m just too much of a character driven reader to have enjoyed this story that is very, very plot driven.

The bond between Aster and her sisters, Violet and Zinnia, is incredibly powerful, and watching them begin their journey together made me instantly invested. Seeing their relationships tested throughout the story was both heartbreaking and compelling. The Mothers, with their secrets and the Gifts they bestow, created an atmosphere of mystery and tension that kept me turning the pages.
The ending left me excited to see where the series goes next. If you enjoy fantasy that blends magic, strong family relationships, emotional stakes, and darker themes, this is definitely a book worth picking up.

What an amazing book of hope,love,loss,grief,and forgiveness.
The love you feel while reading about this place makes you want to never leave. The characters and world that were written are breathtaking. You are overjoyed in one moment and crying in another. I truly didn’t want it to end.
I can’t wait until book two comes and read this journey in Messa.

This story isn't just a tale, it's an entire experience. I went in expecting a fantasy adventure - and there are elements of that, sure - but it really is much deeper than that. This is almost genre-bending in the way it combines the backdrop of a fantasy setting & plot against a multi-generational story that spans decades. I found myself growing so attached to the sisters, the Mothers, and the other characters, and I experienced such a roller coaster of emotions watching their choices play out. There were so many paths Aster and her family could have taken, so many choices, and so many consequences. I really couldn’t put the book down because I had to know what was going to happen next.
The descriptions in this story are amazing. Right from the first visit to the Mothers, I was entranced. I felt like I could see Monassa so clearly, and it gave me so many different feelings - sometimes it was eerie, sometimes magical, sometimes hopeful. This was SO creative and translated really well on the page.
I also loved the dichotomy of the patriarchy vs the matriarchy here. We got to see the extremes of two societies and I really thought it worked so well to emphasize the differences. I know some parts were exaggerated, but it only served to bring out the specific (and sometimes horrific) consequences of characters’ certain actions. I was disturbed by some of it and I felt sorry for some of them, but I also thought it was a necessary evil within the story. Violet and Aster’s story was such a foundational piece of the entire book and I felt it so deeply throughout.
The overarching theme of religion is almost cult-like in the way Aster had to accept the Mother’s bargain and spread the word to the Monari citizens. I found myself conflicted in how I really felt about this throughout the story. As much as I loved Aster and Lysander, I didn’t know if I could just blindly accept their ‘mission’ and was curious how that would play out as they visited the towns. It was the only part of the book I was a little iffy on, because there wasn’t a ton of explanation of Aster’s powers or scenes of her really using them. But later in the story, when there is tension within the family and some of Aster’s own start to question and push back, I found that really believable. I hated the conflict but I think that’s when the whole story clicked for me: this wasn’t necessarily about magic powers, but rather about choices, consequences, and blind faith. If a reader goes in understanding that as the main point, they will REALLY enjoy it.
Lastly, do not skip the look ahead to book 2: this book sets the foundation, but I think we’re really going to get cooking in the next one. It made me SO excited.

Reading this book brought along a lot of different emotions. I’ve never read a book quite like this one. The setting is in a far off land. The beginnings of an undiscovered territory being founded under the guidance of “The Mothers”.
It gives religious - borderline culty vibes to me. Our FMC is Aster. She is chosen by The Mothers to be ordained as the first Consari of Monari. And this story is her memoire of her life. Her destiny as the chosen one. Her struggles, her love, her loss her family.
She trudges through after finding her destined partner and chieftain, Lysander and they create a safe haven for the people of Monari, promising to use the gifts (powers from the Mothers) to provide peace and never using the gifts for selfish reasons.
I love the sisterhood bond that is a huge aspect throughout the book. It heartbreaking and tragic the lives these sisters each endure.
Kristin jones paints the scenery seamlessly. It’s so easy to visualize the characters, where they are and what is around them. Emerging myself into the scene as a read.
This book made me cry. Made me angry. Made me giggle and tingle. It’s heart breaking and beautiful. It’s tragic and dark at times.
Realizing this is all a memoire of Aster, and how she was able to remain vigilant in her beliefs through all her losses and struggles I was happy with the end when she finds peace in the after life. Making the read fulfilling. Though there are a few points I still want to see resolved between characters like Samson, Zinnia and her husband and their family and friends that traveled to remote lands, her niece Meera and the future of Faustia that is heavily implied to have an arc of its own as they have sacrificed so much to keep that side open with the connection between the Consari and violets door on the solstice. This story has much more I cannot wait to read in future sequels. There was loss, love and joy.
I have this book a 4/5 due to some confusion in unresolved characters and plot points that o hope will come up in book two. I also personally would like more action and purpose to the Consari.
Overall a great read that is different and engaging with vivid scenery and character depth.

Destiny’s Awakening is basically a six star read for me - hands down the best advanced reader edition I’ve read this year and I hope it’s incredibly successful for the author! I am 1000% invested in book 2, especially after experiencing the founding of the Consari, witnessing the Faustian drama, and getting a sneak peek of Book 2 after the epilogue.
I love how the author wrote this as a memoir. It absolutely felt that way in a heartfelt, personal way. It leaves room for various interpretations beyond Aster’s experience but also feels like a primary source account. I can only imagine how this will set us up for the future.
I am absolutely in awe of how the author has crafted this world, how she’s made me literally freaking cry (multiple times!) over these characters because I fell so so connected to them and their story.
I ADORE Lysander + Aster’s relationship. It feels so real. They have fairytale love but with very believable tension and drama. This felt like the ‘Slice of Life’ and pacing I’ve been hungering for. So many stories take space over short time frames with HUGE stakes and it’s refreshing to read a fic that spans decades and where the emphasis is on the people experiencing the conflict than the actual conflict itself.
I know there are a million other rambles and connections to fan over, but I’m still processing everything. I left with a bittersweet feeling and am truly emotionally touched in a way I hardly feel as a reader.

I had such a wonderful time reading Destiny's Awakening.
The story begins with a slower pace, giving you time to settle into the world, get to know the characters, and really appreciate the relationships being built. It never felt boring to me—it felt intentional. That slower start made everything that came later hit so much harder.
And then...Chapter 49 happened.
Absolutely not.
If you've read it, you know.
One of my favorite parts of this book was the relationship between the sisters. Their love for one another felt genuine, supportive, and incredibly heartfelt. It's refreshing to read a fantasy where those family bonds are given so much care, and they ended up being one of the emotional anchors of the story for me.
I also loved the way the story is told through the lens of a memoir. It gave the book a unique feel and made me even more invested in seeing how everything unfolded.
And can we talk about Lysander for a second? No shadow daddies here—get yourself a Lysander. He completely won me over.
Kristine Jones has created a beautiful fantasy filled with heart, hope, and characters you'll genuinely care about. By the time I reached the end, I was completely invested in their journey and already looking forward to seeing what comes next.
If you enjoy character-driven fantasy with strong emotional moments, meaningful family relationships, and a romance that grows naturally alongside the story, I definitely recommend picking this one up.

I need to start by saying I do not believe I was the target audience for this book. It is out of my normal realm but I opted to finish the book because I was chosen as an ARC reader and received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Although not my normal taste the author had beautiful writing. Illustrative descriptions of both the landscape and characters. And intense world building.
This is a largely religious based book. Although the religion is unique to this story following “the mothers”. With the FMC being chosen by “the mothers” to bring about a new time to their world; with her as their voice to the people.
It follows the lives the FMC, her family, and extended family during the time of “the mothers”. It is a multi-generational story that contains many time jumps. Some only days or moments but others stretching decades. With these jumps there was a lack of satisfaction with the descriptions of why the jumps happened and left me as the reader guessing what happened, why, and what was going on at that point. I found this distracting.
There is no spice, only a closed doored descriptions and insinuations. Destined love stories, twisted love, family love this book had all of it.

There are graphic and sad scenes in the book, child loss, murder, banishment, families torn apart, rape, etc.

Destiny’s Awakening is a fantasy novel that highlights a sisterhood and their life’s journey and how life can take a total different path with one simple choice. Destined to find their soulmates they must trust the Mothers and not stray from the ways otherwise the consequences could be grave. “They said every path had a price to be paid". In the beginning of the book it was a little confusing to understand where the character's came from (background piece, what made them, them). The characters seemed to willing to go along with whatever was thrown at them, no one seemed to question or have any push back. I love how I could relate pieces of this novel to my personal life, one small step could cause a wave of changes throughout your life. Makes you really sit back and ponder if you chosen the right path. Definitely a must read, it is not your typical copy and paste fantasy book which I really enjoyed exploring something different. I am really looking forward to the second book!

The characters seemed to willing to go along with whatever was thrown at them, no one seemed to question or have any push back. I love how I could relate pieces of this novel to my personal life, one small step could cause a wave of changes throughout your life. Makes you really sit back and ponder if you chosen the right path. Definitely a must read, it is not your typical copy and paste fantasy book which I really enjoyed exploring something different. I am really looking forward to the second book!

Despite those technical difficulties, I could see the heart of the story and the care Kristine Jones put into creating it. The writing has an engaging quality, and the world and characters were intriguing enough to keep me invested whenever the formatting allowed the story to flow naturally.

Overall, this was an emotional ride. The highs were high and the lows were low. The story does have some romance, but no spice. It's perfect for people who enjoy feel-good stories with some added heartbreak.

Lysander:
"Do you feel it?" His eyes closed, and he hummed along with the melody, face serene. "It's a song. It’s our song.”
Zinnia:
"Be the pebble that changes everything, sister."
Lysander was a gem of a husband. The Mothers did Aster a solid having this man at her side through every twist and turn.
From Chapter 49 on, I don't think I've cried this much in a book. The Splintering broke me first. I had to stop and step away after that. My heart shattered. Then, having Zinnia and Tyrus also leave, that hurt too.
My heart appreciated the twist to have Aster begin visiting Lili and taking the steps to build a relationship with her instead of continuing to follow Vi. I really wanted to know if she changed Faustia. Speaking more on Faustia, GOOD RIDDENCE GARRETT!!
I have so much more I could say, but I'll leave my review at that. I can't wait for books 2 and 3 to be released!

This book did things to me I was not expecting! What stands out the most is that it really made me sit and think.. What would you do, if on the eve of your 21st birthday you were transported in a dream to meet with "the mothers", spiritual deities who offered you a bargain which would completely change your life and hold you responsible for guiding your nation onto a new path? I think it would take someone with a very strong character and a pure heart to take on the challenges Asther does without almost a second thought, honestly I don't know if I could have done it.. This is an incredibly thought provoking read, and emotional as we watch how the path Asther chooses leads to both happiness and grief, how despite all best intentions her bond with her sister unravels but how possibly all is not lost...
The way this book wove so beautifully and intricately through Aster and her family's life from a young girl just starting to walk her path to her final days.. And what a life it was.
I truly cannot recommend this book enough but be warned, tissues will be required for the final chapters. Thank you so much Kristine for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this very special book!

Kristine has crafted a beautifully written story packed with emotional struggles, real-world trauma, empathy, and love. The unique magic system, compelling FMC, and historical-fiction-meets-memoir writing style really set this book apart. The emotional depth is fantastic, making the characters' struggles feel incredibly raw and real.
I gave this a 3-star rating primarily because the expansive cast of characters was hard to keep track of. I frequently wished for a family tree diagram, as I struggled to connect with or care about most of the supporting cast outside of the main character. I also personally prefer less of a memoir style and would have loved to see the magic system explored with more depth, rather than just being used to push the chapters along.
That being said, the writing is gorgeous, and I know this book will resonate deeply with a lot of readers. I'll definitely be picking up the next installment to see where the story goes!

I smiled many times while reading this story yet there were times when I had rage as I wanted to yell at the characters. 😆 I cried reading this story, I never expected that.

Destiny's Awakening reads like a poetic memory unfolding; part fantasy, part emotional reflection. The writing is vivid and immersive, quickly pulling you into a world shaped by faith, family, and destiny.
What stayed with me most was the emotional core. Beneath the fast paced plot, the story leans heavily into relationships and personal struggles that feel raw and deeply human. That’s where I found myself most invested.
I did wish there had been more depth to the magic system and the political and religious dynamics, as those elements felt like they were just beginning to take shape. At times, I wanted a slower pause to fully understand how everything connected.

I applied for this ARC because I was intrigued by what seemed to be a very female/matriarchal/sisterhood centered story. I was not disappointed. Kristine Jones creates a land, a culture, a religion that is gynocentric and she does it well.
It took me a moment to become invested in Aster's life and those around her. About halfway through, I was all in. It is at about the midway point, when everything gets very complicated and you feel the weight that Aster carries as Consari and as a sister.
I think readers who are looking for epic fantasy with strong, mature, complicated women, fated yet enduring love, (Aster and Lysander are a how-to of healthy relationships) and low spice will thoroughly enjoy this solid debut.

I am so glad I was chosen to read this via the author. The story was right up my alley. In the premise was about three sisters and awakening their true destiny and powers. The writing style was engaging and pulled me in right away. I was hooked pretty quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the story, even the darker moments, because what is life but moments of joy mixed in with the bad. Without it we couldn't really appreciate the good in life. The story hooked me by even giving a tiny tease of the book to follow this one and I'm looking forward to reading more. Overall, I really did enjoy this novel. It's about a woman (FMC) named Aster that receives elemental power from the "Five Mothers of Monassa" that are from a different ancestoral realm. With these powers that the Mother's of Monassa give to Aster, she would become a bridge between the living & ancestral realms in which she would be binded to both realms. Aster would also be given the gift of becoming the first Consari of her land to build a community on for her people. Along with her chosen future husband, the Cheiftain, and her two sisters that would also hold certain powers beneath her.
The story itself is very well written & thought out. The beginning of the story was a bit confusing as you were just thrown into Aster & the Five Mothers without any real explanation of how we got there to begin with. That being said, as the story went on, you could really feel yourself within each character. The motions of someone having certain powers & responsibility that comes with that; The siblings and what triumphs they go through; all the good times and bad, you could feel it. Its a great story about relationships, life lessons, responsibilities, marriage, and family. Towards the end I did get a little overwhelmed with how many characters were being introduced. However, I can also see how many different ways that this can become a full blown series with many stories to come & I have to say that I'm excited to see where it goes...
