As an ARC reader, I was completely hooked by The Neighbor Lied from the very first chapter. Parker Vale delivers a tense, twist-filled thriller that kept me guessing until the very end. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another secret surfaced and sent the story in an entirely new direction.

The characters felt realistic and layered, with motivations that were believable even when their actions were questionable. The neighborhood setting created an atmosphere of constant suspicion, making it impossible to know who could be trusted. The pacing was excellent, balancing suspense, mystery, and emotional depth without ever dragging.

What stood out most was how effortlessly the author built tension. Every revelation raised the stakes, and the ending was both satisfying and surprising. Fans of domestic thrillers and psychological suspense will find plenty to love here.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be looking for more from Parker Vale in the future!

Five Stars for Ruining Neighborhood Barbecues Forever

ARC Review: Thank you to the author/publisher for the advance copy. All opinions are my own, including the unhinged ones.

There is something deeply unsettling about a neighborhood where every lawn is perfect, every smile is polished… and every single person feels like they’re quietly calculating your expiration date. 🫠 This book had me side-eyeing everyone. The mailman? Suspicious. The friendly neighbor? Absolutely not. The protagonist? Girl… I support your mission, but I also needed you to stop touching obvious danger with your bare hands. 😭

Some thrillers rely on nonstop action to keep your heart racing. This one weaponizes paranoia instead—and honestly? That was so much worse. It starts with a quiet feeling that something isn’t right, then slowly tightens the screws until you’re suspicious of every smile, every conversation, and every person who insists everything is perfectly fine. I wasn’t reading this book so much as slowly unraveling alongside it.

The pacing is exactly what I want from a psychological thriller: patient, intentional, and constantly building pressure. Every chapter gives you just enough to keep you moving before immediately making you question everything you thought you knew. Claire is easy to root for because she’s driven, relentless, and willing to risk everything for the truth—even when every decision made me want to yell, “Girl… please stop walking directly into the trap.” The biggest star, though, is the atmosphere. Westhaven Gates isn’t just a setting; it’s a perfectly manicured nightmare where silence feels threatening, politeness feels rehearsed, and every friendly neighbor might already know how your story ends.

The psychological tension absolutely carried this book. The suspense doesn’t come from constant action—it comes from omission, uncomfortable conversations, lingering glances, and the growing realization that everyone seems to know more than they’re saying. I trusted absolutely no one, and the book rewarded that level of paranoia at every turn. The atmosphere is suffocating in the best possible way, the pacing never lets the tension collapse, and the clues are layered with enough restraint that solving the mystery feels earned instead of handed to you. Then there’s the twist. Not an over-the-top shock designed purely for spectacle, but one that quietly shifts your entire perspective until you’re forced to rethink everything without ever feeling cheated. That’s the kind of manipulation I can respect. I actually closed the book, stared at the wall for a solid minute, and whispered, “…well that’s deeply concerning.” Respectfully… I did not appreciate being manipulated that effectively. 😒

My only real “complaint”—and honestly it’s more of a personal wish than a criticism—is that I would’ve happily spent more time with some of the secondary characters. Nearly everyone was suspicious enough to deserve an even deeper dive into what made them tick. As for the pacing, this isn’t a flaw so much as a promise: if you’re expecting explosions, body counts every other chapter, or a twist every twenty pages, this isn’t that kind of thriller. It’s patient, deliberate, and far more interested in making you question everyone in the room than in shocking you every five minutes.

If your ideal thriller leaves you questioning every character, second-guessing every clue, and convincing yourself the neighbor across the street is definitely hiding a body, this is absolutely your kind of read. Fans of psychological thrillers, domestic suspense, neighborhood noir, slow-burn mysteries, and morally gray investigations will have a great time living inside this delicious spiral of suspicion.

If you’re looking for nonstop action, graphic violence, or twists every twenty pages, this may not be the right fit. This book rewards patience. It asks you to sit with the discomfort, embrace the uncertainty, and let the paranoia slowly settle under your skin until you can’t tell who’s lying anymore.

If your favorite thrillers make you suspicious of every handshake, every neighborhood barbecue, and every person who smiles just a little too long, this one absolutely delivers. It’s tense, clever, psychologically messy, and fueled by the terrifying possibility that the biggest threat isn’t hiding in the shadows…it’s waving at you from next door. 👀

A beautifully controlled psychological spiral that convinces you everyone is dangerous—and somehow still leaves you less prepared than you thought.

Lock your doors if you want… the danger already knows your address. 🚪 If I had one takeaway, it’s this: the scariest thing in this book isn’t what’s hiding in the dark—it’s how convincingly the daylight lies. 👀

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of The Neighbor Lied via Booksprout from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Parker Vale has delivered an absolute masterclass in psychological suspense with The Neighbor Lied. At a tight 183 pages, this book manages to induce a level of physical, suffocating tension that full-length novels rarely achieve. It is a relentless, deeply uncomfortable read that attacks your psyche from the very first page.

The story introduces Claire Beckett, a woman living under a false identity in the seemingly perfect neighborhood of Westhaven Gates. She is hunting for her missing sister, Eve.
The thin veneer of suburban perfection cracks immediately when her next-door neighbor turns up dead under highly suspicious circumstances, leaving Claire with a cryptic, four-word warning: He stole everything. Run. This is not a "whodunit" narrative. Instead, the plot establishes the identity of the culprit early on, pivoting entirely into a high-stakes chess match of how to bring them down.

Vale's execution of pacing is flawless. The prose shifts smoothly between rapid, staccato sequences and longer, tense lulls that leave you desperate to catch your breath. Most impressively, the environment itself functions as an oppressive character. The neighborhood feels intensely claustrophobic, causing a physical itchiness and discomfort that makes the reader feel like an entirely helpless spectator trapped behind the curtains. It is a grounded, terrifyingly realistic thriller written with incredible precision.

If you want a book that will completely disrupt your peace of mind, add this to your immediate TBR.

This is my first book by this author- I was able to obtain an ARC copy and it sounded interesting.
The book is set in a nice neighborhood that Claire has moved in to after getting a random message from her sister that she hasn’t seen in years. Claire is personally on the run from someone but in this case she is running towards someone or something- she doesn’t know what until she enters the gates of the neighborhood. I think the author had a good story line- just the punctuation and repeating of short sentences about the main events made it harder for the story to flow. The neighborhood is not safe and people seem to disappear so Claire has to figure out who she can and cannot trust using clues left behind for her. I had a few questions in the ending wondering what happened to one of the characters, also what Claire is running from is briefly mentioned and I wanted more. from. I thought at one point the stories did intersect but then nothing was resolved- the ending seemed open to a sequel so hopefully there are some more answers. The character development is good, each character has unique attributes which makes the reader also wonder who to trust.

The book stars with Clair walks into her new house, being directed to that particular house by a message from her sister Eve. She quickly meets her neighbors, Marcus who is the head of the subdivision, Jake a recent widow, Nora, and Lauren a relatively recent new neighbor next door. It is evident from the beginning that there is a lot of underlying tension and danger just below the surface. When she wakes up on her second day in her new home, she discovers that her neighbor, Lauren, has fallen and found dead at the bottom of staircase in her home. The story evolves, and no one is who or what they appear to be. It was a good quick read but throughout the book I felt like there was so much more to the background of the story that was never told. I felt like this must be part of a series where the background of Clair and Eve are further explained. Also, the ending left it open to a further explanation. Also, a lot of the wording and thoughts by the characters were repeated over and over and I felt like maybe I was rereading parts of the book.

A tense, twist-filled thriller that had me completely hooked from start to finish. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another secret surfaced, sending the story in an entirely unexpected direction and I loved every second of it.
The characters felt incredibly real and layered, with motivations that made sense even when their choices didn’t.

The neighborhood setting added such a powerful atmosphere of suspicion; it truly felt like no one could be trusted, and that unease stayed with me the whole way through.
The pacing was spot on, perfectly balancing suspense, mystery, and emotional depth without ever slowing down. Each reveal raised the stakes, pulling me deeper into the story and making it nearly impossible to put down.

And that ending? Equal parts satisfying and shocking the perfect way to wrap up such a gripping read.

If you’re a fan of domestic thrillers and psychological suspense, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.

Thank you to the author for the eARC, this is my honest review.

From the opening chapter, Parker Vale's The Neighbour Lied had me completely hooked. This tense, twist-heavy thriller kept me guessing until the very last page, constantly introducing new secrets that shifted the story in unexpected directions just as I thought I had it all figured out.

The author built tension effortlessly, balancing suspense and emotional depth with excellent pacing that never felt slow. I found the characters to be layered and realistic, with believable motivations even during their more questionable moments. The neighbourhood setting itself added to the atmosphere, creating a sense of constant suspicion where it felt impossible to trust anyone.

The stakes intensified with each new disclosure, culminating in a finale that managed to be both unexpected and thoroughly fulfilling.

This was an excellent book that has me looking forward to Vale's future work; it is a must-read for anyone who enjoys domestic thrillers and psychological suspense.

We start off strong with an unknown person being murdered. This continues with getting to know Claire and all the neighbors names. Helping identify the neighbors made it easy to tie a name to who I guessed was the killer. While I was wrong with my initial guess of the killer I was also happy as it meant the mystery would continue. However I didn’t like how clues where dealt with. I kept having déjà vu with the repetition of clues. And while I didn’t like the middle I loved the last third of the book where we got tension, suspense and action. So much excitement to finding the truth and having the “villains” get what they deserve.

The premise of the story sounded very intriguing but I found the follow through to be lacking. The heart of the story was there but was rather bare bones and unfulfilled in the whole of the story. There was also alot of repetition and regurgitation of facts previously stated. That tended to annoy me and take me out of the read. I also wondered if this was a sequel or perhaps a prequel to another story as the repeated mention of Claire's previous "life" makes one believe so. All-in-all, I found the book to be just ok.

The neighbor lied review
Omg while the book started off a little slow, boy did it end with a bang. I can't wait to see what comes next. But I do hope that the FMC gets to get the perfect revenge on her husband. I love the subtle notes of a actual connection of the FMC to the good guy caught up in this horrible situation. No one should have to ever pay the price for someone else's greed. I am so glad that part of the problem has been resolved, but i hope she can find her sister and also remain safe.
This book was so good. I do have to say I was right about my feeling of the cop from the start. Always trust your gut I guess.

Claire was determined to find out what happened to her sister. This captivating, and a bit eery take, takes a good look at controlling and domineering personalities. Conversely, the resilience and determination of several characters (namely Claire, Laura and Nora) leads the reader through the discovery and compiling process of problem/ mystery solving. The lingering question regarding Claire's past was one of my favorite components.

This was not my first reading of Vale's work, and it won't be my last. I look forward to the next twisted adventure.

I received this book as a gift and I voluntarily provided this review. Enjoy! 📚

Claire is trying to sort out where her sister went. A secret email provided her last address,  and Claire just moved there, telling the neighbouring residents that she is trying to establish herself after divorce.

All the neighbours seem either too friendly or too secretive  -- it's hard to separate.  Is there anyone she can trust? Will she ever find her sister? It seems that even the mention of her name causes strange reactions.

Follow Claire as she tries to get answers and decide who to trust.

The storyline is set in a nice neighborhood that Claire moved to after getting a random message from her sister that she hadn’t seen in years. The neighborhood is not safe and people seem to disappear. I did like that the characters (neighbors) were introduced to us in the beginning. This helped keep up with who you thought was the murderer. It reminded me of the game of clue and you went through trying to figure out what was true and what was a lie. The storyline draws you in from the beginning to the very end. An entertaining story.

Wow, what a book. I could not put this one down. So many secrets in the small gated community. Nothing is as it seems. Claire moves into the community, because it is the last known location of her sister. What she uncovers while she is there is a huge web of lies. If you like psychological thrillers, give this one a read. I finished it in one night. Makes you think about what your neighborhood could hide behind all the smiles and waves.

I enjoyed Parker Vale's The Neighbor Lied. I finished the book in just a few short sittings. It was a quick read. It kept my interest from start to finish. I do think that some of the book was overly repetitive, this is why I gave a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars. The story was really good though. It was interesting how things came together and how it left you hanging at the end, waiting for the 2nd book in the series.

I read this novel as an ARC and this is my review. Claire is trying to find her sister Eve. Moves into the house Eve had disappeared from. Claire tells no one her relationship with Eve. There is a big story brewing, and everyone is suspect. A fast-paced story, a great character development, and plenty of twists to keep you glued to the story. Well written, an easy enjoyable read.

Great story!

I liked this story a lot. It was super twisty and the old saying never judge a book by its cover is very apropos here. No one is as they appear and secrets are like currency in this neighborhood. The suspense builds naturally as does the tension. You won’t see the end coming and you’ll enjoy every word!

The neighborhood is creepy. Fake smiles. I don’t like it. Claire moved there because her sister Eve disappeared and had been there last. She needs to find out what happened. The story is certainly full of suspense. The people creep me out. They make it seem like everything is great but it’s really not. The Neighbor Lied is a good psychological thriller that kept me on edge.
