Raised by wolves in the mountains of Colorado, Meredith Hart traveled the world to seek her fortune, fell in love with a half-elf ranger, and now lives in a cabin deep in the Maine woods where she writes steamy fantasy romance with snarky, reluctant heroes and the warrior women who love them.
She also writes mythology-inspired paranormal romance under the pen name Samantha MacLeod, and she has occasionally been known to pen a poem or two. Sometimes they even make it into her books.
I gotta admit I’m really enjoying this author’s work so it was great to read these four stories that add up to give readers a picture of the Elites. . I think I’m right in saying that one of these stories is new which obviously rounds out the adventures nicely . I won’t go into details about each story as I have seen quite a few other reviews that do that but I will state what I liked . I very much enjoyed that each main Elite felt very different to their companions even though they had trained together . The women that they come to love are also very much written as individuals and in fact can be quite violent if needed . The regime they are escaping is truly vile and what they do is insidious and it felt very much right as things come together as this book collection ended . I’ve read several works by this author now and definitely recommend her if you want fantasy with romance and actually pretty cool adventures . I noticed yesterday that one of her ebooks was free so a great way to start your own journey . This is quite a long piece admittedly as it brings several stories together but certainly don’t be put off by the length as it’s most assuredly worth your time. This voluntary take is of an advanced copy
1,200 pages, one novella, and three novels later... what a journey.
If you have enjoyed Meredith Hart's books before, you are going to love Kingdom of Gods & Monsters. This omnibus contains all three novels and the novella from the Killers of the Towers series, making it the perfect way to binge the entire story without having to wait for the next installment.
The series follows the Four Elites of the Towers of Silver City, men gifted with the ability to control magic, and what happens when they discover that the people who trained them may not have been entirely honest. Each novel follows a different Elite and is told through dual POVs. That is all you are getting from me because anything more would wander into spoiler territory, and everyone knows how I feel about spoilers.
Like all of Meredith Hart's books, the world-building is fantastic. It is woven naturally into the story instead of being dumped on the reader all at once. With each book, the world expands a little more, and by the end of the omnibus it feels fully realized and incredibly immersive.
One of my favorite things about this series is how distinct the characters are. The four Elites each have their own personalities, backgrounds, motivations, and trauma. They never feel like different versions of the same character. The same can be said for their love interests. Each woman is fully developed with her own strengths, flaws, and goals. The only thing they really have in common is their inner strength.
That said, my favorite characters were actually two side characters, Bairgus and Zayne. Every time they appeared on the page, they brought the story to life for me. Some side characters exist to support the plot. These two felt like they were living and breathing right alongside the main cast.
And perhaps one of the greatest gifts Meredith Hart gives readers in this series: no massive emotional damage and no cliffhanger endings. In a genre that often seems determined to emotionally destroy me, I appreciated that more than I can properly express.
If you are looking for a fantasy series with excellent world-building, memorable characters, magic, romance, and a complete story you can devour in one sitting, I highly recommend Kingdom of Gods & Monsters. Just make sure you clear your schedule first. At 1,200 pages, once you start, you may not want to stop.
Kingdom of Gods and Monsters I read the last 3 of these 4 books over the past couple of years. I enjoyed rereading them again in this omnibus, they are well written stories of danger and romance, The first book about Pytr had never been published, and it fills in some gaps.
Monster of the Towers: Romance, danger, magic. One of the 4 Elites of the Towers, Pytr decides he wants to leave. But he can't, once you're in the towers, that's it. This story is about how he escapes at great peril and reunites with his wife.
Monster of the Dagger Mountains: Magic, treachery, romance. The Exemplar Fyrris sends Kira to the Dagger Mountains to meet the God Killer Reznyk Thorne, acquire what is believed to be a magic infused amulet. Trekking thru a steep snow covered slope in a blizzard, dire wolves howling in the night, and not too sure who to trust, or which overgrown mountain trail to take makes an interesting tale. I should note I got an ARC from the author.
Monster of the Silver City: Magic infused silver chains and nightmare steel, danger and romance. Syrus and Veloria are lured to The Towers by promises never fulfilled and end up battling the Exemplars of The Towers and mercenaries for their freedom. The tortures that the author describes I could almost feel. But, there is also romance in this book. As Veloria describes Syrus "We're like a match. Strike us against each other, and we burn every time." I should note that I received an ARC from the author.
Monster of the Deep Forest: Magic, Romance. Hiding in the Deep forest from his pursuers. Aveus and his sarcastic raven Bairgus evade the White Riders. But he can't hide from Inera who has her own reasons to find him. Good story as always from Meredith Hart. HEA. I should note I got an ARC from the author
Kingdom of Gods and Monsters: The Complete Killers of the Towers Series by Meredith Hart is an absolutely gripping dark fantasy that earned every single star for me. This complete collection wraps up the Killers of the Towers books, and reading it as a full arc was the perfect way to experience the story. The payoff hits harder, the emotional arcs land deeper, and the stakes feel even more intense when you see the whole journey unfold. The Tower is a brutal, shifting structure that tests its inhabitants and demands sacrifices, and the killers who climb it are flawed, dangerous, and deeply compelling. Meredith Hart writes with a dark, sharp voice that doesn't shy away from the darkness these characters bring with them. The world feels oppressive and mesmerizing, and I was hooked from the very first page. What made this a five-star read for me was how the characters developed across the books. Their relationships shift in ways that feel earned, their motivations deepen, and the choices they make carry real weight. The tension between them is electric, and the emotional arcs land perfectly. I couldn't stop reading. Overall, Kingdom of Gods and Monsters is a standout dark fantasy collection that delivers on intensity, complexity, and a satisfying ending. It's perfect for readers who love morally gray characters, brutal settings, and stories where survival comes at a cost. This is one of my favorite dark fantasy reads of the year, and I can't recommend it enough. 🖤📚
In a sweeping epic of four intertwined storys of love, lose, betrayal, sacrifice and redemption, comes the tale of four young mages and the women who love them. These storys are tender, heartbreaking, breathtakingly action packed, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. Although they are called the Elites and treated like princes, they have learned the hard way that when the Silver Towers come calling for you the answer is always yes and dissention is always punished with pain. Told they would be learning magic to help humanity, they instead learn the cruel fate the Towers have gathered them for. Each story is a standalone book told from dual viewpoints, one for each of the Elites, as they each try to recover from the horrible deeds they performed for the Towers before escaping. As they work through grief, trauma and struggle for redemption, they are helped along the way by forgotten friends, loyal lovers and surprising allies in a joint quest to tear down the Silver Towers and stop them from ever hurting more people. The Towers will not give up power easily and some fights will take them to the brink and leave readers breathless. Meredith Hart has spun another excellent story, spanning from the Silver Towers and distant lands across the sea.
I always enjoy consuming a complete series all at once and I loved the way this connected them all together sequentially while also adding in a fun prequel novella to start off the story! You follow the previous four Elites of the tower after each of them has broken from it and somehow harnessed a power from the old gods on their mission, and now are one the run or captured.
I liked getting to go through each of the dual POV storylines all in one book, and doing it this way made it so you could catch some of the over arching plot points between books and also visit previous characters or see some certain characters that played somewhat of a main role in all the books (good and bad)! My opinions of each book can be found in those books reviews but overall I really enjoyed this format, the authors overall storyline and world building and how the ending left it open to maybe one day tell more stories in this world! My rating for this series all wrapped into one book, 4.5/5!
Thanks to the author for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!
First of all, I hadn’t realized the novella included here was one I’d already read. So when I started it, I was sitting there thinking, “Wait... this seems familiar.” Then it clicked, I’d already read it before and had enjoyed it back then.
As for Book 1, I genuinely liked it. Even though by the time I finished Book 3 and sat down to write my review, I couldn’t remember all the details, I still remember enjoying it quite a bit.
Book 2, however, felt a little slower and wasn’t quite as memorable for me as the first book. Book 3 was enjoyable as well, though not as much as book 1.
Overall, this world turned out to be something completely different from what I was expecting. I do think I might have connected with the series more if all three books had focused on the same couple. Since each book followed different characters, I felt a bit disoriented at times.
That said, the series has a solid fantasy foundation, interesting world-building, and an engaging overarching plotline. Overall, it was a good reading experience.
Once again, author Meredith Hart shocked me with just how much I loved all four of these stories. They are all very different from each other. The characters are all different, the powers they do, or don’t have as the case may be, are all very different and the way they escape the Towers are also different and I loved reading each and every one of the stories. One thing Meredith always does perfectly is world building. The world building never bogs down in details, but I’m also never lost in a story without understanding why certain things happen. What she puts her poor characters through is a lot, but they also get to reap the rewards as well. Honestly, I cannot recommend anything written by Meredith Hart highly enough, and this series is no exception to that!
I received a free advanced reader’s copy and am voluntarily leaving this review.
3.75/5...This was an enjoyable romantasy collection with four interconnected couples, plenty of action, and satisfying HEAs for each romance. I liked how all of the stories tied together into the larger conflict with the Towers, and there were several relationship dynamics that kept me invested. Each story starts in the middle of ongoing events with a lot of important backstory missing. Instead of gradually revealing information in a way that built intrigue, it often felt like I was missing key pieces needed to understand the characters' motivations, relationships, and the world. In many cases, those explanations didn't come until halfway through the story—or even later—which made the beginning of each installment confusing and made it harder to stay fully engaged. The romances themselves were fun, and I enjoyed the variety of tropes across the four couples. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Pure Magic! These are four well told, highly entertaining, fast paced, spicy and magical inter-connected stories which are definitely worth reading. As for each of the four sets of the characters, well, they light up the pages in the telling of each tale. Having previously read 3 of the books in this series (and having thoroughly enjoyed each of them) I could not pass up the opportunity of also reading an early copy the Prequel which tells us how it all began and ties in really well and I did enjoy this one very much too. Each book can be read as a stand alone but as a Collection, its Pure Magic! My voluntary review is for this entire collection.
Since this is all the books (and the novella) in this series, this is a review of the series as a whole. All the stories had magic, some quests, good world building and strong characters. I liked that I got to stay in this world all the way through. It was nice to be able to binge read. I also like how each character gave us different perspectives and none of them were the same. I will say though that I think Monster of the Deep Forest is my favorite of all of them. The banter was especially top tier in this one. I have always liked this authors writings and this only added to my appreciation. Overall, I had a really fun time reading this.
I received this completed series as an ARC and I am very very grateful! The magic system was quite unique and instead of magic being banned, it is a rare and covered thing exploited by evil. I almost hope there's another series or novella even, from the perspective of the elves and the dragons, that would be sick as heck lol. These characters are deeply flawed and traumatized to hell and back, but with their trusty animal sidekicks and a healthy dose of spite, they make a cathartic story for any fantasy-loving cycle breaker to fall deep deep deep into. The dual POV was executed beautifully. I cannot recommend this series enough!!
The obsession of a power that was not entitled for human life, brings the worst part of humanity alive. Tortures, murder, pain, and taking advantage of the weaknesses of people, for the necessity of them to feel special, to feel needed, so they can believe in lies and be betrayed and force them to be part of the injustice, to pray for innocents, are just a couple of the things the tower is doing. Four young friends fight an individual war to regain their lives back and restore what was taken and stop the cruelty of the tower. They will do everything in their power to correct and stop what the towers has done.
Meredith’s talent for immersing you fully into the worlds she creates is top tier. Not only do you fall mercilessly into the pages but the characters become cherished friends that your heart bleeds for. One of the best things about her books.. no cliffhangers or lasting emotional damage!!
I highly recommend Kingdom of Gods and Monsters - If you are looking for a fantasy series with excellent world-building, memorable characters, magic, romance, and a complete story you can devour. Just make sure to clear your schedule!
Such a good collection of stories! I loved the way they were each unique characters and storylines but they all connected. The story telling was phenomenal. I loved every minute of this 1000 page journey
Epic storytelling at its finest! A Complete Dark Fantasy Series in one book and man do the characters grow and change in the best way! I can’t think of another word but Incredible!!
If you’re tired of incomplete series and the cliffhanger endings … Add this to your TBR Now!
This story collection (4 stories plus a prequel) is fabulous! I read each story as an ARC and am happy to offer this honest review. The stories are enchanting. Each couple is layered and appealing, and Meredith’s richly imagined world building will suck you right in.
I truly enjoyed following all these characters throughout the entire series. It was a bit of a commitment with them all in one but I loved being able to hop right into the next story!
These were such good books. I liked how they were all connected and they were in one omnibus. I really liked Aveus and Inira’s. They didn’t have a lot of trust in the beginning but they earned each other respect and love in the end. I enjoyed all the books and I will be rereading them again
Whoa. Not only is this omnibus truly gigantic, but it’s worth the reads! Four couples. One enemy. Different trials and tribulations for each couple but an incredible story line!
Kingdom of Gods and Monsters is actually a bind-up of four interconnected books, starting with a novella. Each story follows a different couple, all told in dual POV, while still contributing to the larger plot.
One thing I found interesting is that book 2 jumps ahead by two years and shifts to a new couple. At first I wasn't sure how I'd feel about that, as the story of book 1 felt unfinished, but it eventually was fine because all of the main characters are connected. The MMC's are a close-knit group of friends, each with their own unique magical ability and every couple ends up fighting against, or running from, the Towers.
The story is packed with secrets, hidden truths and twists. As more is revealed, it becomes clear that the people living in the Towers have been deceived, which kept me wanting to know what was really going on. I loved how each couple had their own romance while still adding pieces to the overall mystery.
My only real criticism isn't the story itself but the format. Since this edition combines all four books into one, it felt like a never-ending book. Personally, I think I would have enjoyed it more if the stories had remained separate books. Finishing each one individually would have made the reading experience feel less overwhelming.
Overall, I had a great time with this series. If you enjoy fantasy romance with found family, multiple couples, unique magical powers, plenty of secrets and an overarching mystery that unfolds across several books, this one is definitely worth reading.
