A Regency-era enemies-to-lovers romance set in the magnificent Scottish Isles
Tess Hale has always been taught to fend for herself, but she never needed to until the night bounty hunters come knocking. It's 1813 in Great Britain, and Tess's best laid plans crumble when her father sends her alone in the dead of night to an island cottage to escape them. She finds herself in a world of warring clans she didn't know existed.
After a decade as a spy separated from his clan, Jamie Malcom has a duty to fulfill as next in line as chief-but his absence means he must earn his people's loyalty. He pursues a treasure stolen from his clan long ago, and it leads him straight to Tess.
As Tess grapples with her past, Jamie vows to protect her future—but lies revealed shatter the trust they had been building. For purposes beyond themselves, they are thrust into a marriage neither of them wanted . . . at first.
In the finale to the Best Laid Plans series, Grace Hitchcock invites readers to the sweeping Highlands and beautiful Scottish Isles with a romance guaranteed to delight.
Tropes: enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, bad boy hero, & more! A sweet romance with all the sigh-worthy swoon and NO spice!

To Win a Wager by Grace Hitchcock book three in the Best Laid Plan series is probably one of my favorite books of this year! Tess Hale has been taught how to survive by her father, and those skills came in handy when bounty hunters came to take her and her father away in 1813. Jamie Malcolm just retired from his spy career to become the next in line in his clan as chief. He is pursuing a treasure and that involves Tess. Can they get past being enemies?
Oh, my goodness! Grab your Scottish tartan, a cup of tea and dive into this absolutely delightful romance. I was engrossed from page one! The mystery, twists and turns, adventure, and swoony romance made my heart so happy. I was engaged with the complex characters, cheered for Jamie and Tess to get together, and found myself lost in the Scottish countryside. Jamie is a wonderful hero and I may have asked my husband to confirm his Scottish heritage while reading the story.
I read To Win a Wager by Grace Hitchcock within 24 hours of starting the book. This will be one of my favorite books of 2026. I have adored The Best Laid Plans series and am sad it is ending, but loved the wrap-up in this novel. I very very highly recommend To Win a Wager by Grace Hitchcock.
I was gifted a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.
In To Win a Wager, I was swept into an adventure store that was filled with romance, danger, and secrets. From the earliest pages, the author wove a story that kept me guessing and turning pages as I inhaled Tess & Jaime's enemies-to-lovers adventures amid clan battles in 1813 Scotland. It was an epic journey I thoroughly enjoyed.
Tess has been taught by her father to fend for herself and been trained to be prepared for contingencies. While these "games" growing up were tiring, she wanted to please her beloved father. Suddenly, Tess' world changes and her father sends her off with coin, her faithful dog and a prayer.
There are many twists and turns. Jamie is a swoony hero. And the inclusion of a protective and loving dog...be still my heart.
The whole series is highly recommended for fans of historical romance. My gratitude to publisher Kregel for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
Ready for a an action-packed romantic adventure tale set in Scotland? This fast-paced story with a unique couple who captured my attention from the start, will keep you up reading late into the night. It was hard to put down! Set in the Regency era, parts include the Prince Regent himself, and the history of the time period woven into the plot was intriguing. A few mentions of faith inserted here and there, just enough to help mold the characters' outlook, but not too heavy. A sighworthy romantic ending caps it off. The end of a series, but it was easy to read as a stand alone. A terrific romantic adventure! Recommend! 4.5 stars

Tess and Jamie! Oh, my goodness, these two were FANTASTIC! Grace Hitchcock did it again!
Tess Hale is brave, clever, fiercely independent, and exceptionally skilled with her knives. But give this girl a fishing pole, and she manages to hook her own nose! And Wolfie! Her supposedly protective dog is apparently willing to forget his duties when someone offers him fish. That dog! I had such fun with these characters!
Jamie Malcolm is a former spy with a complicated past and a clan whose trust he needs to earn. I adored his tenderness toward Tess, but those secrets! There were times I wanted to tell him, "Jamie, just tell her the truth already!" I loved that Tess wasn't afraid to challenge him!
What an adventure! The Scottish setting, dangerous clan rivalries, family secrets, and romance made this such an exciting read. I was right there with Tess and Jamie! I laughed at their antics, worried when things got dangerous, and even found myself thinking about what I'd be praying in their situation!
And the Christian content! Tess seeks comfort in her Bible and turns to the Lord in prayer when she's frightened. Jamie is a new follower of Christ who recognizes his sinful past and knows he has been redeemed through Jesus. I especially appreciated his struggle to discern whether he was following God's will or pursuing his own plans. He recognizes his mistakes, seeks the Lord's forgiveness and guidance, and genuinely desires to do what is right. I loved seeing their faith guide their decisions.
I received a copy of To Win a Wager from the publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours LLC. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
As the third and final book in the series, I am glad to see the series end as it did....but I am really going to miss the comraderie, social-norm-breaking, characters (fierce women, in thier own way who chose right over status quo, and the toublesome...maybe misunderstood fellas who are heroes at heart but need some...encouragement at times) that Grace Hitchcock has developed in this series. I would enjoy another book or two from this series for sure!
This gem had me reading in almost one sitting just to know what happened next. Between the family secrets, the missing royal treasure, and Tess on the run from a few highland thugs....will the high stakes gamble of the past reveal the answers hidden for a generation or cost Tess everything??? You do not want to miss this book!
To Win a Wager is my favorite of the three books in this series.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy the others - who can resist a story-telling baker with a serious food allergy rescued by a pirate? Or an incognito romance writer who truly finds her highwayman? But this one - a spy masquerading as a thief who secretly is a high-ranking heir who stakes literally everything on a woman he only recently has met. Swoon-worthy for sure. Innocent romance, cold treachery, complex characters and choices make up the backbone of To Win a Wager. There were a few times I found myself giggling or alternatively, ranting, but overall this is a story not to be missed. I highly recommend it.
🏔️ Release Date: October 20, 2026 🏔️ . . . This was such a refreshing read! I haven’t read such unique plot lines in a historical/regency romance novel in quite some time! This was one of those stories that hooks you from beginning to end. I haven’t read the first two books in this series, but that didn’t keep me from absolutely loving this intriguing tale set in the Scottish Isles! (I’m definitely gonna have to go back and read those first two books, though, after enjoying this one so much 😄)
I loved the characters in this story! Tess was one of those FMCs that you can’t help but feel a kinship with as she sails the treacherous seas of love and betrayal. Her fierce independence was slowly softened by the brawny Scot who came to her rescue more times than she would have cared to admit. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the trials of their love/hate relationship play out in this regency-era friends-to-lovers tale!
I will say, towards the last half of the story I began to lose some interest in the goings on of the plot. I’m not sure what exactly caused me to stop caring as much about the story—it may have had to do with the main characters really laying it on thick after their marriage of convenience. It started to feel cringy rather than sweet 😬 Thankfully, the ending picked back up, and I was once again able to enjoy the story!
All that to say, I would definitely recommend this book to my fellow readers! It really was such a fun tale, and I look forward to diving into more of this author’s books in the future! . . . I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley and Kregel Publications. All opinions listed are purely my own.
I am so glad that I got to read the previous books in the Best Laid Plans series as it made reading To Win a Wager even more of a fulfilling journey with such a unique trio of friends. After meeting Muriel and Vivienne, I loved finding out why Tess is so adept with throwing knives and other survival tactics. The opening scene is perfect with Tess and her knives as the story comes full circle, hinting at more perilous adventures to come. In discovering the breadth of skills that Tess possesses, there could be no match for her other than Jamie Malcolm, who is sent to retrieve the stolen jewels. This book had me devouring it as quickly as possible through all of the enthralling twists and turns, especially when encountering those wishing Tess and Jamie harm.
I appreciate that the depth of spiritual transformation is brought up as conversion and genuine repentant behaviour are addressed. Seeing Tess and Jamie lean on God for strength and provision as they escape threatening circumstances makes their story more believable when we know that there is a sovereign God working out all things for good. Prayer is even more essential to the battle than the physical weapons wielded. Readers will find that Grace Hitchcock offers daring heroines, swashbuckling heroes, and wartime action—accompanied by an everlasting love found in Christ—in this grand finale that only Tess and Jamie can pull off in the Scottish Highlands.
The penultimate conclusion to the Best Laid Plans series! Clean, filled with a sweet highland romance, an epic fight scene, historical fiction, all while teaching readers what biblical womanhood can be! To Win A Wager is the best ending I could have hoped for!
Grace Hitchcock paints the best, most encouraging and awe inspiring picture of Christian feminity. Believing women are intelligent, trained, well educated, brave, bold, and steadfast in the face of danger- I want to be all three of our heroines! And YES there's a character reprise! EEEKK!
"Take charge. Don't wait for help from a man."
Returning to her home just after Vivienne and Bash are stabilized in 1813, Tess Hale's father confronts her, panicked, telling her she must escape just as they discussed and planned since her childhood. Tess is convinced he's jesting and none too quick to obey when she's tired and it's such an inconvient time to practice once again. Tragically, the intruders are the very ones she's trained for years to outsmart. Her father's enemies have come to take her.
Tess's father puts his very life on the line to ensure she gets away- escaping toward their Scotland island home just in the nick of time. With only her beloved dog Wolfie, some money, and mother's family crest as defense and protection, will they arrive in one piece?
Enter Jaime Malcolm- just WAIT until you find out who he really is! But how does he know her father was captured? Jamie is not the man he presents as and oh man does it only get better from there!! Lies, lies, lies- can you untwist this adventurous mystery before Tess does? With such a strong, brave, and capable female lead, readers are in no danger following along in their amazing quest to do justice and reach safety- again and again!
"The little traitor."
"Now that is a wager I would gladly accept." 🥰💖❤️🔥
A man who cooks!? *Swoons* That's almost better than what the Prince Regent decides 😉 I already cannot wait to reread this one! 💖❤️🔥

This romantic Regency adventure is a captivating, satisfying conclusion to the wonderful Best Laid Plans series. I was hooked by the first line, and perfectly timed twists, together with compelling characters, kept me turning pages quickly to see what lay ahead! Flowing at a steady pace and packed with action, the story features honorable, duty-bound hero Jamie Malcolm and strong, spirited heroine Tess Hale who I couldn't help but cheer for! I enjoyed their unlikely romance that blooms in the face of one seemingly unresolvable dilemma after another. Family secrets, stolen family jewels, and feuding Scottish clans keep the tension high. Bits of humor sprinkled in just the right places lighten the intensity of the story. I appreciate how faith is woven into the narrative and especially how Jamie sticks to his convictions. I love this touching page-turner and highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Grace Hitchcock has done it again! Another thoroughly entertaining book! It is the perfect blend of danger, romance, faith, mystery, girl power, and Scottish royalty. I truly enjoyed every bit of this tale and savored it over a mere two days! I especially loved how some of the dangerous parts were unexpected, as well as what the three ladies did, taking charge of their situation near the end (no spoilers 😏).

To Win a Wager gave Disney’s Brave vibes. But instead of archers, witches, and bears, we have knife throwers, spies, and bounty hunters. With fiery red hair and a spirit to match, Tess is a character any woman could hope to be like. Add in the swoon worthy Jamie and nothing but adventure awaits. With constant danger, a budding romance, and trails of faith woven throughout readers win the wager of a fantastic book.

To Win a Wager is an exciting story featuring well-developed characters from previous books, drawing readers into a world of danger, romance, and intrigue. The fast-paced narrative reveals secrets of clans and Dukes, keeping me engaged and on the edge of my seat. Like Tess, I was unsure who to trust in this story that intertwines romance and friendship. The blend of chemistry, trust, danger, and bravery creates a captivating and fun reading experience. I found this story highly addictive and enjoyable!
“I want you to promise me that you will endeavor to stay by my side forever.” “That is a long time, lass.” “It will never be long enough for me, Jamie boy.” “If it is forever that you wish, Lord willing, it is what you shall have, lass.”
This arranged marriage story has a little enemies to more and a marriage of convenience of sorts. It’s full of danger, adventure, romance, and faith. The danger and twists kept me turning pages as fast as I could. Oh and did I mention the MMC is Scottish! (Well, technically the FMC is Scottish too.)
Tess is intelligent, brave, and strong. I loved her determination to make it on her own and her devotion to her Da. I loved that she never worried or cowered in all the craziness she faced. I loved how quickly and completely she trusted Jamie. I loved that even though she could take care of herself she didn’t mind depending on Jamie too. I adored his tenderness towards her. Jamie is protective and honorable with a strong sense of duty. He has his own kind of charisma. I loved his tender heart toward the Lord and his desire to follow His will. I loved his gentleness toward Tess especially when we get glimpses of just how dangerous he can be. I loved his determination to woo Tess and gain her love. Tess and Jamie have amazing chemistry and some truly swoony romantic moments. And of course I can’t forget to mention how fun it was to have Muriel, Erik, Vivienne, and Sebastian along for some of the adventure.
A few more quotes: “I just want to feel safe again, but—” She glanced at him. “If I am honest, I have only felt safe with you at my side since this all began.”
“I am a man of my word,” he whispered. “You can trust me, lass.” “I know.” A flare of daring warmed her as she too kept her voice low. “Wooing is expected, my lord.” “Prepare to be wooed.”
“My heart of stone cracked the moment you threw that first knife at me and missed on purpose. And my affection for you has grown. I love your laughter, your kind heart, and your fierce spirit.” He leaned to her, a promise of a kiss on his lips. “I love you, Tess. Always and forever, my heart is yours.”
This complimentary copy was provided by the author and @justreadtours. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
Oh my heart! I have loved every book in this series! These three friends have quite the adventures. And Tess's adventures are quite the adventures. I loved seeing her tenacity and perseverance throughout all of the hardships that happened to her. But even with all of the craziness that happens throughout the book, it kept me turning pages so quickly! I couldn't stop smiling, or cheering Tess and Jamie on. Their first meeting and the mistaken identity...loved it!!! And the ship voyage. Oh my! And the traveling to Scotland and to the castle, and, and, and...oh my word there are so many wonderful scenes throughout this book.
Jamie has a duty but he might have to realize that he's looking at it all wrong. I loved watching these two fall in love. Even if they don't realize that's what's happening to them. *Happy Sigh* The little glances. The slight touches of the hand. The longing. The admiration. The love. That first kiss!!!! Oh my heart was so happy for these two!!! I said there was Major Swoon in the last book! Well, there's definitely Major Swoon in this book as well. Jamie Malcom is a man not to be reckoned with. Unless you're Tess Hale. Then you can reckon all you want! And Jamie will do all within his power to make sure she's cared for and loved.
A treasure hunt of the highest degree ensues within these pages. But the real question for Jamie is, which treasure is he truly pursuing? The stolen physical treasure, or the treasure of the heart? If you haven't read any of these books, you can read them as standalones. But they're all wonderful that I highly recommend reading them all. I've read them and listened to the audiobooks of the first two. Worth it!!! These are very re-readable books! And I loved seeing the characters from the first book in this one. Very delightful!!!
Content: Clean. Some moments of mild peril. Some fights. Some very mild innuendos. Some sweet kisses but nothing further.
I received a copy from the author and JustRead Tours via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Excellent! I couldn't put it down. I love this conclusion to the Best Laid Plans series by Author Grace Hitchcock. Each story is completely entertaining, and focuses on one of three friends, and these highly capable, unique women and their escapades in the Regency Era. They can be read as standalones, but you will love the whole series as the friends appear in each of them.
To Win a Wager is an enemies to lovers story set in Scotland. Tess Hale has always believed her mother was dead. Her father has taught her survival skills not common for women at that time, and when she has to use these skills, her life changes. She has no idea of her life when she was very young and she's about to find out.
Jamie Malcom, has been a spy for the Crown, and after finishing his service, he returns to his clan, with a treasure, to prove himself capable of the leadership his grandfather is placing on him. He is a man of integrity and a swoony hero.
The author weaves a compelling story that I couldn't put down and kept me guessing. Loved it!
I highly recommend To Win a Wager.
Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
Adventure, check! Suspense, check! Drama, check, Romance, check! All the ingredients for a page turning journey through the Scotland Highlands in 1813. The author does a fantastic job with her descriptions of the countryside and the larger-than-life characters. Tess Hale and Jamie Malcolm make a wager. In the end, will they discover that they may have cast their lots, but God directed where they fell? Do not overlook Tess and Jamie’s story! I received a complimentary copy from Net Galley. All opinions are my own.
To Win a Wager is the third and final book in a wonderful series of historical fiction novels that you don’t want to miss reading. Yes, you should read all three. Yes, you should read them all in order.
Bounty hunters after Tess? Why? And why does her father send her off to a Scottish isle? But furthermore, why does the next clan chief think she has any idea where his clan treasure is?
This book reads fast and furious. I could not put it down. I became so invested in the characters! Tess is so fun! I had to keep reading to find out more about her and how the novel would end. Jamie is also a wonderful character, and the chemistry between the two of them is fabulous.
Jamie was a spy before coming back to his clan to prepare to take over as the chief. Because he left, they distrust him, and he has to earn his place among them.
Ready for the fun plot twist?!
Marriage of convenience between the two! Loved it! They have such chemistry, and I truly could not stop reading. It ended too soon, and I need a follow-up, please and thank you. Definitely one I will read again. I’ve been to England but not Scotland. I can imagine it though and hope to get there one day now.

This book is so good, it kept me totally engaged and entertained as I turned pages and inhaled the story. This is book 3 of the Best Laid Plans series by Grace Hitchcock and I have just binge read the series. I have found another favourite author in Grace Hitchcock as I love her addictive stories that kept me guessing and were full of wonderful characters.
In To Win a Wager Tess and Jamie have the worst of starts but Tess soon learns that Jamie is someone she can lean on and stand with when things get hard. And their story is not an easy one with a storyline of enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience and hidden secrets every step of the way. Just when you think they can breathe again everything flares up and they head to London where Tess's friends and their husbands help support them.
This book had it all, sweet romance, suspense and drama that left me hanging, no spice and a fantastic conclusion to the series. It wasn't anything like what I was expecting but the drama of Scottish clans was fascinating and full of characters with depth, danger and strength. I loved how our resilient females of the series were matched to fierce and determined men who can keep up with them and protect them from the danger that seems to flow around them all. These couples aren't your usual regency couples which made this book (and series) entertaining and unexpected which really added to the appeal for me. This book is fast paced so grab a drink and settle in for a wild and exciting read you will not regret.
After fleeing for her safety in the dead of night, Tess Hale finds that everything she knew about her past was a half-truth, and she is caught between two feuding clans in a fight to regain their standing. Can the man who has the most at stake, be her only chance at safety?
An engaging adventure, with a courageous heroine and an honorable Scottish nobleman who lives his faith. I liked how despite all the new to her revelations Tess keeps a level head, speaking up for herself and holding to what she knows is true regardless. Jamie is protective of Tess, and despite being on opposite sides of the conflict finds himself impressed with her determination and cleverness.
A fast-moving plot, with likable characters that you can cheer for throughout. I liked their chemistry and growing admiration for each other, as well as their shared faith. An adventure filled, high stakes romance, and an entertaining plot. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved this third and final book in the Best Laid Plans series. The Scottish highland setting, clans, and political intrigue make this a book unputdownable. Tess was a strong woman, but you also saw her vulnerability that had me cheering for her. Jamie shared openly about his faith and the transformation that took place in his life. He loves completely and would do anything to protect Tess and those he has been charged with caring. He is going to make a great clan chief.
Tropes and Tidbits: marriage of convenience enemies to love dirks and throwing knives danger spies courier pigeons and codes
I highly recommend this Christian clean historical romance. While it can be read as a standalone, I enjoyed seeing the Tess’s friends from the previous books in the story as well. Readers both will enjoy racing through the lovely and wild landscape of Scotland and see the developing relationship between Tess and Jamie.
I received a copy of the book from the author, Kregel Publications, and JustRead Tours with no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
If I didn't need sleep, I wouldn't have put this book down! The action and adventure from the first page had my heart racing through the middle of the book! And even when I had a bit of reprieve, I had so many questions and knew the FMC wasn't truly safe yet!
To Win a Wager is the third novel in the Best Laid Plans series by Grace Hitchcock. I just love when each book in a series is better than the previous book, and I think that's true for this series.
It has so many wonderful tripes: forced proximity, friends to more, "touch her and die," a twist on secret identity. I love the main characters and highly recommend this series! These are my first books by Grace Hitchcock and definitely won't be my last!
I received an early copy of this book from Kregel Publishing. Opinions are my own.
This is a sweet and action-packed story. Tess has always played along with her Da's training games because they made him happy. Little did she realize that he was really training her for the day when all his lies came to light. Suddenly everything Tess thought was true isn't. And strangely, the one person she finds comfort in is one of the men who revealed the lies. Jamie has been away from his clan for a decade in service of the Prince Regent. But with the chief, his grandfather, growing ill with age, Jamie is called home and given a task: find the jewelry stolen from the clan 20 years earlier including the necklace Tess wore to her friend's wedding. Together they have to navigate a dangerous world to try to find the truth.
I loved Tess getting her own story. I especially appreciated her not being a superwoman. Her father tried, but she has her strengths and weaknesses. Jamie was a wonderful addition to the series. He has his own past he is trying to overcome, but he is definitely trying. I also liked the blend of side characters. Some were evil, some were good, but there were also those that fell in the messy middle. Overall, this was a fantastic book that made me want to forget responsibilities and keep reading.
A riveting finale to a really fun series. I was all in with the story from the first chapter, and it pulled me in in a way that few stories have. Jamie was completely swoon worthy for most of the story and his protective side was perfect. The story is exciting and had me completely devouring this book. There were a few elements of the story that weren’t my favorite, but overall, this story was completely entertaining and I really enjoyed it!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are mine.
I loved this book as much as the previous two in the series. It’s a regency adventure at its finest. I loved reading how Tess & Jamie had a true storybook ending despite all the obstacles in their way. Believe me they were many. I also enjoyed Tess’s two friends making an appearance in the story along with their husbands. It made the story that much richer. I was happy to read all the gorgeous descriptions of the little islands of Scotland. I love the Highlands and all Scotland has to offer. It added another layer to the tale. I enjoyed the epilogue as I usually do. I’m not sure if we will get another book in this series or not since Tess was the last of the three friends, but I sure hope we do. I know a few characters I’d love to see her their own story.
To win a wager such as this is worth the risk, however, these secrets might very well send them to an early grave.
What a wonderful story with a lot of intrigue, danger and perhaps even love? Tess Hale has grown up with just her dad. Her mom has been gone for many years. Suddenly, danger arises and she must flee - the secrets are catching up with her father. Jamie Malcolm is the heir to Malcolmore but he needs to return the long-lost treasure before he can become the duke. A wager that will bring them both what they desire - plenty of danger will follow them before that ever happens!
This wonderful conclusion to the series of A Novel of Best Laid Plans published by Kregel Publications will have you trying to keep up all the way through. These 5 stars are given without any expectation of a positive review.
This is the third book in the series. So it was fun to see reoccurring characters. I will admit the first 40% I was struggling with this book. At first I was confused and then I just felt like there were SO many damsel in distress moments. But after 40% it got much better! Jamie and Tess work together really well. Jamie is definitely heroic. Tess is very brave. I loved them together. And her dog was adorable and protective of her. Good Christian content. Overall, a good read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

What an enjoyable finale to Grace Hitchcock’s Best Laid Plans series! To Win a Wager is a quick read that is perfect for fans of Christian historical fiction set during the Regency period.
The novel follows Tess Hale, whose life is upended after a nighttime break-in sends her fleeing to Scotland for her life—alone and at her father’s behest. Little does she know how her life will change as she enters a foreign world of warring Scottish clans. Enter Jamie Malcom, heir to a Scottish dukedom, who stumbles across Tess in his own search for a treasure stolen from his clans decades earlier. The two join forces for a time and, later, their hands in a marriage, as circumstances arise outside of their control.
More than a mere historical romance, To Win a Wager is a story of centered around the themes of truth, duty and sacrifice, and choosing joy in the midst of difficulties and dangers. I greatly enjoyed watching Tess and Jamie’s relationship unfold, as they learned together and separately that, regardless of their plans, it is the Lord who establishes their steps (Proverbs 16:9).
Some memorable quotes include:
“The only way to keep herself from unraveling like a tapestry was to change her focus from a problem she could not solve to the One who could handle it.”
“The Lord had given her one solution. Perhaps He would give her a second.”
“I don’t want to just survive. I want to thrive. . . . I am no longer alone in my survival. I have a partner. Perhaps my new saying should be ‘communicate first.’”
“[G]ambling is a path you must not take. Even a simple wager can prove more than you bargained for.”
Lastly, readers who have read the first two books in the Best Laid Plans series will be delighted to know that Muriel and Erik from To Catch a Coronet and Vivienne and Sebastian from To Kiss a Knight also play a role in To Win a Wager!

The clan Jamie will soon need to lead considers him an outsider after a decade away - what better way to win their trust back than to find and restore the clan's greatest treasure? But when the search for missing jewellery leads to the long-vanished daughter who was to bring unity between clans, he focuses on the latter in the hope she'll lead him to the former. Only, as they spend time together after making a temporary truce, he starts to get to know her and regret the part she's called on to play. Lies and omissions separate them, but when danger threatens, can they work together to meet it successfully - and end up stronger for the experience?
I haven't read previous books, but the mentions of what Tess and her friends have previously been involved with make me want to go and read them! Having said that, while the final book of a series, it's also a complete standalone story and I very much enjoyed it as such. Tess' combination of unexpected competence (rowing for miles?) and complete incompetence (in catching fish, for example) is intriguing and gives Jamie both things to admire and ways to help her, which was a nice mix. Jamie himself is somewhat of an enigma, with work he's kept secret for years and still can't or won't talk about, but I enjoyed getting to know what I did of him. I also appreciated the way he looked after Tess even when it went against his own interests. They're a good couple and I loved their journey to that point. A good read with a nice mix of adventure/suspense and romance, with some much-needed character development thrown in along the way and some long-buried secrets to uncover.
