This is the first story I have read by Colleen Nye and I read it as part of "Quirky Blind Date With a Book". I went into this story only having seen the cover so had no idea what the story was about besides computers. "Immersion" is a multi faceted story that is about greed, addiction, power & control, and how small things CAN make a change in the big picture of life.
This book was published in 2015 and seems prophetic in certain ways. Obviously dystopia does not happen over night, and this story shows the layers of how it could happen.
I would absolutely recommend this book to my young cousins as it has "closed door" intimacy and the overall message is an important one.
Here are a few of my favorite quotes:
"A society doesn't change without the society itself provoking the changes, right?" "Why would you want to save any of these people?... " "What makes you think they want to die?"
I will be reading other stories written by Colleen Nye in the future as I enjoyed her writing style and character development
I was pretty excited about this book when I started reading it. I thought the concept was pretty cool and seeing the way we are becoming more and more obsessed with technology and how much technology is taking over our lives, it felt appropriate I guess?
I really liked all the characters, I can't say much out here about why or whom I liked because spoilers. But I thought that the book was well thought out and had a pretty good concept.
This might be just me but I felt that in some chapters/scenes, I would have liked to have one single clear POV compared to just having dialogues/inner monologues from different characters. And in some places the book felt too dry for me, I mean the story was pretty exciting and a lot was happening but in some places I felt that the book was a little dry. It could be a little more polished.
But I LOVED the fact that the book was like wrapped up neatly by the ending of the book. Yes people NO CLIFFHANGERS!! Whohoo! In all honesty, I love when a book comes full circle, I love the fact that we got to see the "After" scenes.
2.5 stars This book had a good concept and a strong central character in Seren , so I wish I could have rated it just a little higher. In a world where a significant proportion of the population is addicted to a highly immersive video game, Seren has been raised by her Grandmother following the death of her activist parents. On her return from a visit to a friend in England, Seren finds her house abandoned , with no sign of her Grandmother. Fortunately an old friend is on hand to help , and soon he and Seren find themselves caught up in a dangerous and deadly game of corporate espionage. I read quite a few books of this type and while the ideas and characterisation on display here are pretty solid the writing style left a lot to be desired. Dialogue felt clunky and unrealistic and there were several proof or editing errors in the text, including missing pieces of text at several points. While the pacing felt a little off from the beginning, and the whole section of the trip to England seems superfluous to the story, the last few chapters felt incredibly rushed, and the whole thing concluded a little too quickly and far too neatly to be believeable.
I was given this book as a Blind Date With A Book to read and review. It's not the kind of genre of choice that i'd normally read but I went into reading it with an open mind. I found the first 25% of the story to be very slow to get into and it was poorly written like I was reading a first draught of a book as it had very little structure. The story did get a little more interesting but towards the end I found myself skipping through the pages to get to the end to see what would happen to the characters. The plot of the story was a good idea but I don't think it was written well enough as the plot became sketchy and had too many loopholes, and it didn't have enough drama and excitement to keep a reader immersed in the story. Maybe someone else who reads this kind of story would enjoy it more but it just wasn't for me.
This is that story of one woman in a current dystopian world trying to help make the world a better place. As the story unfolds, we find that Serens’ parents were also fighting to help create a better world but were detained in their efforts. With the help of Chase, whom Seren went to highschool with, and countless others they embark on a scavenger hunt of clues to find people that can help them in their quest. They are forced to escape harrowing situations, being hunted, and even their own lives in an effort to get their message across. Not know whom to trust made this the fight of their lives. Were they victorious, you will have to read to find out.
Immersion is a unique beautifully crafted novel that is packed full of action and drama. The complexity of the storyline will at times leave you scratching your head thinking why and how did that just happen. It's a pretty fast paced story jammed packed with mystery, intrigue, secrecy and lies which made it very difficult to trust anyone's motives or reason for being within the storyline. For me however, the suspense lacked a little impact. The build up was fantastic but then for me, it sort of fizzled out and wasn't as dramatic as I wanted it to be.
First off, Seren is a very likable character. She is strong, reliable, tough yet has a gentle and good heart. She's left an orphan when her activists parents are killed. She's living with her grandmother and goes on a trip to visit a friend.
Upon her return her house is abandoned with no sign of her grandmother anywhere. She gets help in finding her grandmother from an unlikely source, an old friend named Chase.
Lot of action in this dystopian style book and if you love virtual reality you'll really enjoy this book.
3.5 stars of out 5....not at all the typical book that I would normally read, however thanks to the Quirky Blind Date I did read it. I enjoyed the mystery of the book and trying to figure out what was going to happen and who the good and bad guys were. Very scary premise for the book and makes you wonder if technology is always a good thing.
This book was so different to what I usually read but at the same time it was so exciting! I loved going into this and not knowing what was going to happen. It made it all real. Fantastic book!
Colleen Nye has this ability to create a world with her characters and story that sucks you in and makes it painful to put the book down. I found myself waking up in the wee hours of the morning and firing up my Kindle just to see what happens next. Seren is a likable person who probably would have been content with having a normal life, but that's not what fate had in store for her. The plot is very intriguing and the story had me on the edge of my seat most of the time. Lately I've had a very dystopian point of view, so this fit in very nicely to how I'm feeling about the course our planet is headed on. I'm not a fan of spoilers, so I'm not going to ruin it for you, but there is a major turn of events about a third of the way through that changes everything. This was well-written, and even though it's not the typical thing I read, I'm very glad I did. I would have been missing out on a great story otherwise. More Colleen Nye, please.
One Word.... WOW! This book is full of mystery, danger, explosions and love. Immersion is a tech thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book. The main character, Seren, is young and quite possibly the strongest willed woman I have ever read about. She faces possible death time after time and still continues to to keep going. She finds love in a time of crisis and uses that love to help keep her going. The world is falling apart around them thanks to a device called B.I.G.S., but together and with the help of people they don't quite know if they can trust, they must find a way to make things right again. Seren holds the key. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is very well written, and flows perfectly.
When I first learned that this is a story about some sort of a digital game, I was a little intimidated since I'm technologically challenged. However, this story just grabbed at me and never let me put it down until I got to the end of the book.
I truly enjoyed the chase and action involved, not to mention the thrill of not knowing who to trust! Nothing is what it seems. But will Seren and her team get to save the world before they run out of allies?
