My Little Doe
By J L Rosenauer

I Will just start this review with check your trigger warnings. And being from The South, yes, no matter the brand or flavor it is always a coke.
This story starts off in 1995 with our FMC Zalayuh, finding out she is pregnant. Looks like the baby daddy is named Daxyn who isn't around much. And she is not happy.
She is then kidnapped and held in a cell by Daxyn's father . Because to him that baby was his and he was going to delete her after the baby was born.
And we find out it is because they are werewolves.  And she is human. After a night of changes she had the baby prematurely and he died shortly after birth. That caused Daxyn's father Ravik to order her death. And now she is being taken away again. Quinn (MMC) is taking her and escaping to his family to keep her safe. Where she begins to heal, learn to fight and take care of herself. Because going back is dangerous. Quinn is making plans to deal with Ravik, so safety can be had for everyone. This is a slow burn, low spice, enemies to lovers, fated mate dark paranormal romance. With a HEA Thanks to NetGalley.

Title: My Little Doe
Author: J.L. Rosenauer
Genre: Dark Romantasy, Paranormal Romance
Subgenres: Werewolf Shifter Romance, Captor/Captive Romance, Slow Burn Romance, Emotional Romance, Survival Fiction, Found Family, Healing Journey
⭐ My Rating: 4/5
🌶️ Spice: 2/5

My Thoughts:
I'll admit, I initially expected a fairly typical dark shifter romance. This was not that.

Instead, what I found was one of the most emotional & traumatically grounded paranormal romances I've read this year.

Yes, there are werewolves.

Yes, there are dark elements.

Underneath all that lies a surprisingly human story about grief, healing, resilience, and rediscovering hope after life completely falls apart.

I like that the chemistry between Quinn and Zalayuh isn't built through instant attraction or explosive passion as is commonly the case in shifter romance. I feel it is meant to demonstrate that it is built through shared pain, quiet acts of kindness, unwavering patience, and slowly earned trust. Reading their relationship develop felt incredibly authentic because neither character is emotionally, mentally or physically ready for romance in the beginning. The love story grows naturally alongside their healing rather than replacing it.

The pacing is undeniably slow, but in this story, I actually think it works. I did personally due to my inattentive ADHD to hold onto the read due to the pacing being slow as I do prefer a faster, more action and passion type novel. However, I do not believe that detracted from my reading at all.

Zalayuh (FMC):
Zalayuh completely stole my heart. I wept for her at certain times and rejoiced for her at many others.

She isn't written as an indestructible heroine who simply powers through trauma. She breaks. She grieves. She questions everything. Yet beneath all that heartbreak, all that trauma, there is an incredible determination to survive, an iron will to persevere, which she does not only for herself but for the people she loves.

Her resilience feels deeply believable. The author allows her to struggle instead of magically recovering. We, the reader, see her break; we see her process and we experience it all with her. It was reading her slowly reclaiming pieces of herself after enduring unimaginable loss made her journey incredibly powerful.

One of my favorite aspects of her character is that she never loses her compassion despite everything she's endured. Even while fighting to survive, her love for her younger sister remains a constant reminder of who she truly is.

Quinnlyn (MMC):
Quinn may honestly be one of my favorite quiet protector MMCs.

He isn't flashy. He isn’t written like a big tough alpha male.
He isn't possessive simply for the sake of being possessive.
He isn’t unhinged or crazy.

Instead, he's patient.
He’s observant.
He’s steady.

He understands that Zalayuh doesn't need someone to rescue her emotions, she needs someone willing to sit beside them and hold them with her, so the weight doesn’t crush her.
His internal conflict between loyalty to the pack and doing what's morally right adds significant depth to his character. I really enjoyed reading him slowly question everything he'd ever known, I believe it made his growth just as compelling as Zalayuh's.

By the end, Quinn proves that strength isn't always loud. Sometimes it's choosing kindness when every circumstance tells you not to. Sometimes it is choosing the right thing even when the wrong thing is easier. Sometimes it is accepting someone, holding them in their grief and simply being.

Their Relationship:
This is absolutely a trust-before-love romance. It is passionate but softly, quietly.

The emotional chemistry carries this entire story.

Every conversation. Every shared silence.
Every small protective gesture from them both.
Every moment slowly chips away at the emotional walls between them.

Because of everything Zalayuh experiences, instant romance would have felt unrealistic, and I am glad the author did not write them that way. I would not have liked this book as much as I ended up doing if she had. The author allows trust to become the foundation before love or sex ever enters the picture.

By the time the romance fully blossomed, I was completely invested in both of them.

Writing Style:
J.L. Rosenauer writes with remarkable emotional restraint.

Rather than relying on shock value, she allows difficult moments to breathe, she has the reader sit in those moments, experiencing it with the character. The grief feels authentic, it felt relatable without becoming melodramatic or annoying, and the emotional scenes hit hard because they're grounded in realistic character reactions.

The rural Tennessee setting and Louisiana bayou atmosphere create a vivid backdrop that enhances both the paranormal elements and the emotional tone of the story.

The werewolf mythology serves the emotional narrative rather than overshadowing it, which makes this feel refreshingly different from many traditional shifter romances. In my opinion it would have been an extremely difficult line to straddle while writing and she does it beautifully.

Final Thoughts:
My Little Doe surprised me in the best possible way.

What begins as a dark paranormal romance evolves into a deeply emotional story about resilience, grief, family, and hope. The romance is slow, heartfelt, and built on genuine trust, making every emotional payoff feel deserved.

This won't be the right fit for everyone due to its heavy themes, but readers looking for a character-driven dark romantasy with meaningful depth will likely find themselves thinking about Quinn and Zalayuh long after the final page.

I genuinely do not even know how to put into words what this book did to me.

My Little Doe completely consumed me from the very first page and took me on one of the most emotional reading experiences I’ve had in a long time. I started this book today and somehow ended up finishing it the same day because I physically could not stop reading.

This story was heartbreaking, dark, emotional, healing, beautiful, and painfully raw all at once.

The way this book handled grief, trauma, loss, survival, pregnancy, healing, family, and love felt so incredibly heavy and real. Every emotion hit deeply. There were moments where my heart genuinely hurt for these characters.

Zay absolutely stole my heart. She was written with so much depth and vulnerability. Even at her lowest moments, even through unimaginable grief and trauma, she never stopped surviving. She felt delicate at times, but underneath that was unbelievable strength and resilience. Watching her growth throughout the story was honestly beautiful and emotional to experience.

And Quinn…. I adored Quinn. He wasn’t written as someone there to magically fix everything. He was patient, protective, caring, and gave Zay the space and safety she needed while still loving her fiercely. Their connection felt emotional first, which made the romance hit even harder.

What stood out most to me was how emotional this book felt from beginning to end. The atmosphere, the pain, the healing, the love — everything felt immersive. It wasn’t dark just for shock value. Every heavy moment had purpose and emotional weight behind it.

This book completely wrecked me in the best possible way.

If you love:
🖤 emotional dark romantasy
🖤 healing journeys
🖤 protective MMCs
🖤 grief and survival stories
🖤 slow burn romance
🖤 found family
🖤 emotionally intense reads
🖤 damaged but deeply lovable characters

…this book will absolutely stay with you.

NETGALLEY ARC REVIEW

DNF at 48%.

I should have absolutely loved this book, however I feel it’s labelled as a book it absolutely isn’t.

It was labelled as a dark, paranormal romance.. yes, there are dark aspects of it, and yes, wolves are infact paranormal, but it didn’t real like any of this, it felt a lot more contemporary, which part way through tried to ram in the paranormal aspect. For a lover of darker books and for fantasy elements, it just really didn’t hit the mark for me.

I will say, the author handled the grief and darker undertones of the book very well which is why it is not a one star, and if it was a contemporary novel with dark elements (like the first say 30% read as), I would have absolutely lapped this up.. but the moment it becomes a ‘I shouldn’t fancy him I hate this man’ It just took away from all of the elements I loved at the start of the book.

A big miss for me sadly.

Also PSA; The book states it was set in 1995, less than a year after the start of it, Z & Q go and buy a DVD and DVD player… which wasn’t available in the US until 1997 - an error which annoyed me more than it should have.

I really enjoyed this book.
I found it an interesting story that kept me wanting to know what happens next. I enjoyed the twists and turnes of the story.and found it was a well written and very compelling one too.

This story gave me laugh out loud moments and then some emotionally wrecking moments that actually got me crying and i don't usually get teary but this one got me. I think being a mum myself there are moment's that are relatable espically if you have eve rmis carried.

I would suggest reading the trigger warning as I would say that for a lot of women (in particular with a traumatic birth and loss of baby.)- The FMC is a super relateable character but also strong and with a good sense of humour and the strength she finds in her healing, especially the gorgeous pet thatshe rescues... love that....

The journey of these characters were a delight to read, I Loved seeing the enemies to lovers aspect and then towards the second half of the book, seeing the POV of our main male character. Beautiful.
I loved especially when the romance turned to intimacy, I only wish there was a little more. Loved the wolf/shifter element throughout this book it's not over the top but more like "Twighlights" wolf's

lwouldn't say it's a dark Romance more gray but it defiantly has elements that make it so.
about a 2 out of 5 spice

Im glad I got the opportunity to read this book - its worth the read from me

I was fortunate enough to receive this book as an ARC. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from the very first page to the last. I read this book quickly as it kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. It isn't an intense read but a very well developed story with characters that I cared about what happened to them. The slow burn relationship was a nice added bonus. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone that likes a slow burn romantasy. The book is in the genre of Dark Romantasy and the author did include some possible trigger warnings, but for me I didn't think they were needed.

I got the pleasure of being an ARC reader for this book. This is my #1 book of 2026!!!

Was hooked from the first chapter, been a while since a book grabbed me from the start.

Zalayuh went through so much. Got pregnant. Her mom was an alcoholic….she had to take care of her siblings, then was away for a while, got back and things were worse than she could imagine.

Quinnlyn- didn’t like him at first but in the end he was what’s best for her.

Please check trigger warnings as some things make effect you and ur mental health 💜

This book is incredibly fast-paced and hard to put down! Because the main character is held captive for much of the story, the narrative jumps through days and weeks between chapters, focusing only on the major events. This pacing kept me thoroughly engaged. The romance is a great enemies-to-lovers arc, rooted in their opposing sides. Thankfully, the author avoids the tired miscommunication trope, and the female lead ends up with someone I never expected at the start. The male lead is a standout character—he has great depth, a genuine understanding of women, and solid, healthy boundaries. Considering the trauma the female protagonist endures, it is incredibly refreshing to see her supported by such a balanced and respectful male lead.

This book has a little bit of everything, dark romance & a slow burn, werewolf shifters, grief and healing. I love how the story played out, I was hooked on it and couldn't put it down. I did do a lot of crying with this book cuz it does have to do with losing a child and it just broke my heart but it also put it back together with all the love in this book. Its a must read for me but do look at the warnings for this book before reading.

This story will completely blow your mind. It starts out with such depth and it captivates you to keep pushing through until the end. The many high and lows really make this book stand out and make you want to finish in one sitting. The ending is perfectly written and doesn’t leave you with unanswered questions. I loved the whole story line.

This is a very consuming dark emotional and healing story.it deals with kidnapping, loss of a child, grief, racism, murder, drug addiction and alcoholism. It also shows zayas healing from it all and eventually ascension. The author gave this book everything with a lot of ups and downs.
