Kids need the right skills, words, and practice to stay safe when you're not there
This book gives them exactly that, so they act instead of freeze when it counts
Lauren Briggs, a parent and teacher herself, created the Real World Ready Method to turn what keeps kids safe into skills they can actually use Every chapter opens with a real situation, like a friend saying "don't be a baby," or a message from someone they don't know
Then it gives them the exact words to say, practiced until they come automatically
Each ends with a five-minute game, because kids learn by doing, not by being told
Here's Just Some of What You and Your Child Will - Your child was born with an "uh-oh" feeling, and most kids are quietly taught to ignore it
- Shut down peer pressure cold with a single sentence, no argument or excuse
- Why "stranger danger" fails almost every child, and what really works instead
- The real reason good kids freeze in the moment, and the one thing that snaps them out of it
- Spot manipulation while it's happening, even when it shows up looking like kindness
- A 5-minute game in every chapter that turns each lesson into an automatic reflex
- Meet the "no-secret" rule that makes your child almost impossible to groom or manipulate
- How to help your child speak up, even when they're afraid no one will believe them
- Written for kids ages 6 to 12, in a voice they'll actually read and finish
- Every skill becomes exact words your child will actually use when it counts
Not Sure This Is the Right Book for Your Child? Here's What You Can Count Every lesson is built to leave your child steadier and more capable, not scared of the world
Every word is written in language kids actually understand and can put to use
And it's rooted in the same proven techniques professionals teach to keep kids safe

Many times 5 star rating! This is THE book all parents with small children should read! Very interesting and well written! It describes real life situations a child could encounter coupled with possible conversational conversation starter scripts and psychological analysis for the parents.
I categorically agree with her word of wisdom on page 37, 'The No-Secrets Rule'. '(...) if your child remembers only one thing, let it be this: No safe adult will ever ask a child to keep a secret from their parent. Not for a gift. Not for a surprise. Not for anything'. YES someone dares to say it! And that includes teachers or other so-called educational professionals telling kids who think they are transgender or whatever else not to tell their parents. But they together with the child will make sure the child will get what is needed. Healthcare? Extremely dangerous! Children should be able to speak to parents about anything and nobody not even the very best education professional or a so-called confidential advisor (who abuses the position) comes between them! Do we dare to speak up? Do we dare to actively protect the children?
Raising Children Street Smart by Lauren Briggs is a must read for parents of children of any age. The biggest takeaway for me is that this isn't just a book for parents of little ones. While it’s fantastic for those early years where kids are first venturing out, it’s actually incredibly relevant for teachers, too. It offers really practical, actionable advice that could really help educators teach students how to keep their guard up when an adult isn’t nearby. One group that I think often gets overlooked is teenagers. We like to think they’ve got it all figured out, but teens are in that tricky phase where they’re desperate for independence but are still figuring out how the world actually works. They’re just as vulnerable as younger kids, maybe even more so because they think they know everything! This book is a great way for parents to sit down with their children and go through the steps outlined in this book together. It’s a great way to teach them about safety and the tools they need to make smart choices when you aren't around.
With an 11 year old, I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this book to check out.
This book is definitely "real world ready", and I think its a great, approachable way for parents to shift and help prepare their child. It says it's recommended for ages 6-12, but what I like about this book is it's clearly written for the parents. Once your child grows beyond that toddler "be careful" age, this book provides the groundwork to help prepare you and your child face the "real world". In my opinion, it's common for parents to miss the "dangers" that seem innocuous because we are stuck in our own "politely raised" mindset, but this book is a gentle wake up call for parents, and provides a plan to simply lay the foundation for when your child is put in a sticky situation. It is about empowering the children, and retraining the adult mindsets. The "games" are more approachable, but some are more conversational than 'fun'.
As someone who has worked in mental health and human services for decades including roles as a child and family advocate, I highly recommend this book.
The advice is practical and relevant, the information relevant to children and easy for parents to breach and teach these topics to their children. I love the practice activities that the book offers parents to complete with their children.
Of course the book can't cover every possible situation a child could encounter, so parents still need to add additional examples based on their own situations/environments but this book is a wonderful starting point to begin those conversations in strong and impactful ways with their children. I would highly recommend this to any parent who doesn't know how to start the conversation with their child or is wondering if they "covered all of the basics".
Raising Children Street Smart is an absolute must-read for any parent wanting to equip their kids with practical, life-saving skills. Unlike outdated programs that just teach avoidance, this guide provides exact, word-for-word scripts and interactive drills that help children know exactly what to say and do in dangerous situations. It breaks down critical concepts—like spotting manipulation, body autonomy, and overcoming the instinct to freeze—in a way that empowers children to act with confidence. Highly recommended for giving your child the tools to stay safe in the real world.
