15 books71 followersDhruv Bhatt was born on 8 May 1947 in Ningala village of Bhavnagar State (now Bhavnagar district, Gujarat) to Prabodhray Bhatt and Harisuta Bhatt. He studied at various places, standard 1 to 4 at Jafrabad and Matriculation from Keshod. After studying commerce for two years, he left further studying[1] in 1972 and joined Gujarat Machine Manufacturers as Sales Supervisor. He voluntary retired and started writing career.[2]
His novel Akoopar has been adapted into a play directed by Aditi Desai.[3] Tattvamasi was adapted into the 2018 Gujarati film Reva.[4]

I have read 3 novels of Dhruv Bhatt. The theme of each of his novels are very different from the usual novel. In all his novels, there are subtle undercurrents suggesting unexpressed tender feelings between the hero and the heroine, but there are no love-stories as such. And yet, all his novels hold the reader's interest throughout, with gripping stories which are beautifully worded and thought provoking. He writes lucid, sensitive poems, often mystical in nature.
Tatvamasi is a novel which takes you to a roller coaster ride of knowing indigenous people. We often don't care about them but they are practically and artistically way beyond in our way of living. This book show us the thought process of Narmada Parikramavasis. You can the feel the change in their mindset. It makes you real proud of being part of this culture. It prompts you to know more about Maa Narmada. It also tells you how meaningless our daily routine compared to what can be enjoyed.
In Padma Purana, Narmada is said to be superior to the holy river like Ganga.
पुण्या कनखले गंगा, कुरुक्षेत्रे सरस्वती।
ग्रामे वा यदि वारण्ये, पुण्या सर्वत्र नर्मदा।।
Means Ganga is considered to be of special merit in a pilgrimage named Kankhal and Saraswati in Kurukshetra, but Narmada, whether it is a village or a forest, is going to give special merit everywhere.
Dhurv Bhatt novels are easily available in Marathi, Hindi and English. There is a Gujarati movie on this novel goes by the name of Reva. Its a beautiful movie, bit diverted from the novel but do watch it. It will change your perspective.

I assume, Most of the folks who picked this book are either interested in the meaning of their existence or in understanding the complex web of thriving Indian culture.
Let's imagine you are trekking through mountains, It is a treacherous path but your determination to reach the peak overcomes everything. Finally, with all the hardships you will be at the peak. Misty clouds, fresh breeze, melodious winds, Never ending mountains, and imperceptible horizon will give revelation about something that never happened before. You get the feeling of being one in nature, You want to put everything in the words of humans. But you can't, Because the silence of gods devours you, and let you dissolve in the experience that has no words to explain. You will become one with everyone
Have you ever had this feeling before anywhere?
If you say Yes, This book can take you back to the same ride with the blessings of river goddess Narmada.
If you say No, I insist you hop on to this ride because no one should miss this feeling of oneness.
The story mainly revolves around the river Narmada and tribals. It is a story of a self-obsessed man's self-realization journey at the adobe of goddess Narmada. The story gives you a glimpse into intricate indigenous people's life and their connection with nature. How deeply spirituality and tradition intertwined with the life of dharmic people can be seen through many instances of this novel. protagonist through his realization makes us realize why we shouldn't abhor others' customs and way of life as superstitious or primitive without having a good understanding of it.
Modern life is meticulously dark and meaningless, it has lost its charm since it has no meaningful destiny. Even here the protagonist is sort of on the same journey till he meets people who dissolved themselves in the oneness mystery with the blessing of Narmada and nature. I have realized from this book why persevering in our old customs and cultural values is more crucial than becoming rich countries like the west. I hope India preserves its beauty as it has done for thousands of years, Not become like the west in the name of becoming a developed nation.
This was a rollercoaster ride for me personally, Maybe because even I deviated for the last year from the path of our age-old customs. however, this book made me realize why I need to stick to old values than the modern gutter.
The chemistry between people in this book is so natural, no-where you will realize it is fictional. It's an eye-opening book for everyone. There are many things I have realized from this book, Every realization is a treasure.
I live near the adobe of River Kaveri, After reading this book the devotion towards goddess Kaveri is amplified. Imagining her nourishing so many seekers for thousands of years and protecting everyone without wanting anything in return seems so great.

नर्मदे हर।
कुछ पुस्तक ऐसी होती हैं जो आपको एक यात्रा पर ले जाती हैं और पाठक जो जानता है या फिर समझने कि चेष्टा करता है वो अपने आप में एक पावन तीर्थ की यात्रा सी अनुभूति देती है।
नायक बिना किसी प्रेरणा के, बिना आस्था के भारत और नर्मदा के पथ पर निकल जाता है क्योंकि उसके गुरु ने उसे कहा की जो जिम्मेदारी वो उसे दे रहे हैं, उसे वो ही कर सकता है। ये यात्रा केवल एक बाह्मय यात्रा नहीं वरण एक आंतरिक यात्रा भी सबित होती है।
नायक अपनी उच्च शिक्षा लेकर, नर्मदा के पास के जंगल में रह रहे आदिवासियों को सभ्यता का पथ पढाने आता है, उनको बदलने आता है... पर जब वहां के लोगों से मिलता है, उनके जीवन के मूल को समझना शुरू करता है, तो उसके सामने प्रश्न खड़ा हो जाता है की जिन्हे वो बदलना चाहता है पहले उन्हे वो समझ तो ले, ये तय तो कर ले कि उनको बदलने का उसको अधिकार भी है? और ये बात मुझे कहीं गहरे छू गई। मैं जब भी वाइट मेन बर्डन टू सिविलाइज़ द बार्बेरीयन ओफ द वर्ल्ड के बारे में सोचती हूँ, तो इस प्रश्न से झूझती हूँ कि किसने दिया इन्हें ये अधिकार कि ये दूसरों को सभ्यता का पाठ पढ़ाएँ।
एक और बात जो मुझे प्रभाव कर गई, वो जहां ये समझाया गया है, अगर हम अंध्विश्वास की परतें हटायेंगे तो किसी भी बात का वैज्ञानिक, प्रकृतिक मूल दिखायी देगा... किसी भी बात को धर्म से जोड़ कर हमलोगों को इसलिए दिया गया है क्यूँकि ये एक बहुत प्रभावशाली तरीक़ा है जिससे लोग उसका अनुसरण करें।
और अंत में जब नायक अपने अहम्, अपने अस्तित्व, अपने आप को समर्पित करता है नर्मदा को, और सच्चे मन से नर्मदा कि प्रदक्षिणा करता है, उस समय उसको साक्षात्कार होता है रेवा का।

Where should I start. A NRI is sent to a tribal village in west part of India for a study on Saathsaali tribals what happens after he comes in touch with them. Did he write about the tribals and their lifestyle or not is the core story.
It’s not just that.
A story of self reflection, culture, Dharma and spirituality. As the main well not main character he is just one of the characters with no name for him. As he settles down the story paces up opens up a new world of people not so civilised yet very civilised in their own way. Author intertwines the stories with epics and legends of the past. Without any judgemental approach. I liked the female character and the Panditji character they never try to be condescending in their relationship with tribals. Their approach is very much different from the approach of western society or even the urban elite in our own country. Young NRI as he goes on his journey here we tend to see his views from being a man of western values to a man of more rooted person. The transition is very much interesting and influential too.
Lucy professor’s daughter is somehow how most white people are. They are inquisitive yet mockingly have different views. As you go on reading you feel like Indian and American shouldn’t be together is what I felt.
Though author say many times about how this country is bounded by different cultures for a thousand years yet still hanging on a single thread is still a mystery. It’s repetitive but true to a large extent.
Being on the banks of River Kaveri reading about Narmada didn’t make me an outsider yet I felt I was walking on the western Ghats of Madikeri place where maa Kaveri takes birth.

नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेऽस्मिन् संनिधिं कुरु॥

Maybe someday I shall read this book again. I might find some more interesting things.

જ્યારે હું આ કથા વાચતો હતો ત્યારે મને સવાલ થયો કે ખરેખર આ બૂક એ જ ભાષામાં છે જે ભાષાને હું મારા રોજીદા જીવનમાં ઉપયોગ કરું છુ. જવાબ હા હતો; હા આ એજ ભાષા છે જેની થકી હું મારા મિત્રો જોડે, મારા પરિવાર જોડે કે બહારના લોકો જોડે વાર્તાલાપ કરું છું. પછી મને બીજો સવાલ થયો કે જો આ એ જ ભાષા હોય તો પછી હું કેમ આ નવલકથામાં લખાયેલા ૨૦ થી ૨૫ ટકાના શબ્દને પારખી નથી શક્તો કે એનો મતલબ મને ખબર નથી. જવાબ હતો “મારા અંદર રહેલો ગુજરાતી ભાષા પ્રત્યેનો અણઘમો કે અનાદાર.” આપણે ઇંગ્લિશ ભાષાના એવા આધીન બની ગયા છે કે આપણે સારા અને ડાયા દેખાવાં અંગ્રેજીના શબ્દો વાર્તાલાપમાં ઉમેરી દઈએ છે. ભાષાશુદ્ધિ તો આપણે ભૂલી જ ગયા છે. થેન્ક્સ ટુ યોર બૂક મને ઘણા સમય પછી શુદ્ધ ગુજરાતી ભાષમાં કઈક વાચવા મળ્યું. મને જ્ઞાત થયું કે આપણી ભાષા પણ ધની છે. અને ગુજરાતી ભાષા પાસે અતૂટ શબ્દોનો ભડાર છે.
ખેર, તમારી બૂક ની વાત કરૂતો જ્યારે મે રેવા મૂવીનું ટ્રેલર જોયું ત્યારે નક્કી કર્યું તું કે હું તત્વમસિ વાચીશ. રેવા મૂવી તો સિનેમા હોલમાં ના માણી શક્યો પણ મે તમારી નવલકથા આખરે વાચી અને એમાંથી જેટલું સમજ્યો છું એના વિશે થોડી ટીપ્પણી કરીશ.
વિજ્ઞાન અને સંસ્કૃતિને પરસ્પર જોડતી આ વાર્તા સચોટ અને વિચારયુકત કરી નાખે તેવી રસપ્રદ છે. માણસ જે પરંપરા કે ધર્મમાં માનતો નથી તે ફકત ટુંકા ગાળામાં કેવી રીતે ત્યાના રિતરિવાજ, પરંપરા અને રહેણીકર્ણીને સરળતાથી અપનાવી લે છે. કદાચ નાનપણમાં થયેલાં એનાં ઘડતર અને અનુભવને લીધે એ ત્યાના અભણ, ગંદા અને ગરીબ આદિવાસી જોડે હળીભળી ગયો. વાર���તાની મુખ્ય નાયિકા પણ કેવી રીતે દુનિયાના સુખ ત્યાગ કરીને ત્યાં વસવાટ કરવા લાગી એનું વર્ણન તમે ખૂબ સરસ રીતે કર્યું છે. એણીને જ્ઞાત થઈ ગયું હતું કે દુનિયાનાં સુખ જીવનની સૌથી મોટી વ્યથા છે અને સાચું સુખ નિસ્વાર્થ ભાવે સેવા કરવામાં જ છે. આદિવાસી પાત્રો જેવા કે પુરીયા, બિતુબગા, ગાડું ફકીર પણ કઈક રીતે આ નિસ્વાર્થતાને નિભાવી રહ્યા હતા એનાં ઘણા ઉદાહરણો છે.
આ વાર્તામાં આધ્યાત્મિકાં છે, ઇતિહાસ છે, જિજ્ઞાસા છે, વિજ્ઞાન છે અને જ્ઞાન પણ છે. “આપણે એકવીસમી સદીમાં આગળ વધીયે પણ આપણી પરંપરાને સાથે લઈને.” વાર્તાની મારી પ્રિય લાઇન.
બે વસ્તુ મને તમારી બૂકમાં ગમી 1). પ્રકૃતિ અને પહાડોનાં સૌદ્ધર્યનું અદ્ધભૂત વર્ણન. 2). વાર્તાનાં નાયકનું નામ રહસ્ય રાખ્યું; એનો ધર્મ, એની જાતિ શુ હતી એ રહસ્યમય જ રહ્યું. મને એક વસ્તુ જે થોડી ખામી વાળી લાગી એ આદિવાસી લોકોની ભાષા અને બોલી. તમે ખુભ ભ્રમણ કર્યું છે એટલે તમને કદાચ મારા કરતાં વધુ ખબર હશે પણ મને એ લોકોની ભાષા અને બોલી મારવાડી અને હિન્દી બોલીનું મિશ્રળ લાગ્યું.
આશા રાખું છું કે આ સરસ મજાની કૃતિને મારા મિત્રો અને પરિવારજનોને વચાવીસ અને તમારી બીજી કૃતિને ટૂંક સમયમાં વાચીસ. અને નિયમિત રીતે ગુજરાતી ભાષાનું વાચન કરતો રહીશ. નર્મદે હરે.

બે વસ્તુ મને તમારી બૂકમાં ગમી 1). પ્રકૃતિ અને પહાડોનાં સૌદ્ધર્યનું અદ્ધભૂત વર્ણન. 2). વાર્તાનાં નાયકનું નામ રહસ્ય રાખ્યું; એનો ધર્મ, એની જાતિ શુ હતી એ રહસ્યમય જ રહ્યું. મને એક વસ્તુ જે થોડી ખામી વાળી લાગી એ આદિવાસી લોકોની ભાષા અને બોલી. તમે ખુભ ભ્રમણ કર્યું છે એટલે તમને કદાચ મારા કરતાં વધુ ખબર હશે પણ મને એ લોકોની ભાષા અને બોલી મારવાડી અને હિન્દી બોલીનું મિશ્રળ લાગ્યું.
આશા રાખું છું કે આ સરસ મજાની કૃતિને મારા મિત્રો અને પરિવારજનોને વચાવીસ અને તમારી બીજી કૃતિને ટૂંક સમયમાં વાચીસ. અને નિયમિત રીતે ગુજરાતી ભાષાનું વાચન કરતો રહીશ. નર્મદે હરે.

TL;DR: Absolutely loved it! This would be my top re-read choice any day, and I cannot recommend this book enough!

Only such individuals can truly guide us in understanding our culture and carrying it forward without fanaticism or blind attachment. Because, let’s be honest, religious fanaticism rarely leads to true understanding. Even as children, we struggled to see the value in it, so how can we expect the next generations to feel differently?
There’s a character in the story who takes care of a temple and performs Pooja daily, the one person who feels truly grounded and real. I wish more like him existed in real life, someone who could answer why each ritual is followed, showing us the wisdom and logic of our ancestors. At its core, our religion isn’t about rigid ritual but about living an authentic, high-vibration, conscious life. I believe every tradition has meaning, even if some reasons are lost to time and invasions. Sometimes, all it takes is a curious mind to uncover this wisdom, so we can follow it with purpose and pass it on to the next generation, satisfying their questions with genuine answers.
I always want to understand the reasoning behind our practices, not just for myself but because younger generations won’t simply accept tradition as given. We need to help them see the vision our ancestors had. But it’s disheartening to realize that, sometimes, we may never fully recover what’s been lost.

पूरे उपन्यास में माँ नर्मदा जिस पुरुष की कथा कह रही हैं उसका नाम नहीं बताया गया है. क्यूंकि ये हर उस व्यक्ति की कहानी है जिसने इस भारत देश को बाँध कर रखने वाले सूत्र को पहचाना है. वह सूत्र अध्यात्म का है. उसी अध्यात्म के सूत्र पर सांस्कृतिक परम्पराएँ बनी (विसकसित हुई) हैं. ग्रामीण/ वनवासी जीवन में प्रयुक्त गूढ़ अर्थ वाले अनेक वाक्य, जो अनेक पीढ़ियों द्वारा संचित ज्ञान के द्योतक हैं, पुस्तक में दिए हुए हैं. जैसे- पेड़ों का रंग अलग-अलग नहीं हैं. रंग तो एक ही है, बस छाया अलग है. इसका अर्थ समझने में बहुत समय और अनुभव लगता है. (स्वामी विवेकानंद के ऐसे ही एक वाक्य के साथ मेरा खुद का अनुभव रहा है- All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything.)
पुस्तक कुछ ऐसे पात्रों, जिन्हें हम आजकल ढकोसलेबाज़ कहकर खारिज कर देते हैं, जैसे- बाबा/ साधु / तपस्वी, के सामाजिक दायित्वों पर भी प्रकाश डालती है.

ખબર નથી કે હું એટલો પ્રમાણિત છું કે આ માસ્ટરપીસને આંકી શકું. પણ એક ભારતીય જે વિદેશમાં રહે છે તે એટલું તારવી શક્યો છે.

Amazing book!! It has changed the way I would look at people from now. The book has taught me that one should not just evaluate professional abilities of a person, but should also consider his/her cultural values. That would give a proper understanding of human behaviour.

This book has my heart!!
Experiencing a Journey as it is, via book reading, is something I never imagined of but Tattvamasi changed my mind. A must-read for anyone seeking a transformative experience.
The Book tells us the story of a protagonist who wanders in the forest of Gir around banks of the river Narmada for his research work. Initially unwilling to accept the cultural practices, the protagonist somehow tries to understand them with the help of Shastriji (Spiritual Preacher) and other characters around. As the journey progresses he comes across various challenges but faces them with a willingness to learn and by being patient throughout, which ultimately works in his favor. He then starts mingling freely with the very people in tribal community he once felt disgusted by. What shocks him is that, despite their flaws, these tribes possess profound knowledge of life, the stars, and emotional intelligence.
Characters like Maaji, Guptaji, Supriya, Bittubanga, and others play a crucial role in setting the tone of the story. Each of these characters is unique in their own way but one can easily relate to each of them. Nature, being the silent yet very vital character here, provides the answers to the protagonist’s questions. The flow of river Narmada running through those rocky mountains and those changing seasons, gives depth to these answers--answers that go beyond words and can only be felt through personal experience. Going forward he builds a very evolving relationship with all of them.
For me personally, this whole journey gave an essence of being the protagonist himself; it's hard to believe its just a fiction. By the end he starts realizing truth of existence also starts to embrace the unity of all beings, and one can resonate it deeply, in the end, story leaves us with a suspense about whether the protagonist will stay back in India or Leave for US, which is left for reader's own interpretation. While the book may feel a bit scattered in the middle, trust me, everything falls into place beautifully by the end.

To be honest, I saw the movie Reva first then I read the novel. Both are equally good.

I wasn't aware about either the book or the author before I saw the movie 'Reva'. I liked the movie so much that I bought this book and started to read it immediately.
While reading, one can paint a vivid picture of the hinterland around Narmada, the tribal cultures and traditions, the emotions and psychology of Parikramavasis, the challenges and perils that the developed/modern world pose to the conventional lifestyles that are in perfect harmony with Nature.
The author has made a commendable attempt to highlight the timeless fact - Nature, Living beings and the Almighty are inseparable. Being a Nature lover myself, I have traveled in the Narmada region, the mountains of Maharashtra and experienced the simplicity of people living close to the Nature and traditional lifestyles, thereby, I could relate to the content of the book. Such books dispel the misinformation, that spiritualism is something absurd, renunciation is a loser's resort, culture and traditions are illogical and so on.
It's a good read, especially for the people of age
group 30-45.

format. It's riddled with typos.

આ પુષ્તક વાંચ્યા પછી મને ગુજરાતી ભાષા અને માતૃભાષા પ્રત્યે માન વધી ગયું છે. હું પુષ્તક વાંચવાનો શોખીન છું પરંતુ આજ સુધી હું અંગ્રેજી પુષ્તકો જ શ્રેષ્ટ હોય છે એવું માનતો આવ્યો હતો. આ પુષ્તક જાણે મારા આંખ સામે આખું નર્મદા અને એક એક કુદરતની કરામત ને જીવતું જાગતું અનુભવી શક્યો। કોઈ વ્યક્તિ એ અગર એના જીવન માં સૌથી વધુ જાણવું હોય, જીવવું હોય અને સાચા અર્થ માં જીવનની ખુશી ને સમજવી હોય તો પ્રવાસ કરવો જરૂરી છે. હું એટલો પ્રવાસ કરી શક્યો નથી પણ દરેક વ્યક્તિને પ્રેરણા આપીશ કે બને એટલો પ્રવાસ કરજો અને બને એટલી ઓછી ટેક્નોલોજી ઓ સાથે લઈને। (પુષ્તક વાંચશો એટલે સમજાશે।)

જેટલી વિચારપ્રેરક એટલી જ આનંદ સંતોષ અને મોજ આપનારી.
સાંપ્રત સમયમાં માલ્યા, નીરવ મોદી અને બેંક કૌભાંડો રોજનાં સમાચાર છે ત્યારે નર્મદાનાં જંગલો અને છેવાડાનો આદિવાસી ઉધાર લીધેલ નાણાં ચૂકવવા કેટલો પ્રતિબદ્ધ છે એ પ્રસંગ મન-મસ્તિષ્કમાં તુમુલ છેડી ઘેરી અસર પાડે છે.
'મૂલ્યો', 'સંસ્કૃતિ', 'ભરોસો', 'નિષ્ઠા','સહ-અસ્તિત્વ', 'નિસ્બત' ફક્ત ઠાલાં શબ્દો જ બની રહ્યાં છે લગભગ આજનાં ફાસ્ટ શહેરી જીવનમાં ત્યારે ક્યાંક દૂર-સુદૂર કહેવાતાં શિક્ષિતોની સાવ સામા છેડાના જૂજ માણસો આ બધાં જ શબ્દો સાવ સાહજિક રીતે જીવી રહ્યાં છે એ પણ અછત,અગવડભરી અને મુશ્કેલ પરિસ્થિતિમાં અને કોઈ જ હો-હા કર્યા વિના !

Tattvamasi disappointed me. Having read Samudrantike and Akoopar, two of Dhruv Bhatt's great novels, i took up Tattvamasi with great expectations. Tattvamasi is rambling, leads no where, repetitious and lacked characterisation which made his other two books great read. I missed the mysterious Aval of Samudrantike or tough Sansai of Akoopar.I didn't find any useful contribution to the story in bringing about the American Lucy or the professor.
Having said that, Dhruv Bhatt is an excellent novelist in Gujarati literature and his grip on description of nature and his mastery in characterisation is unparalleled.

What a book ! It's been a long time I have read such beautiful tale in my own language. Thanks to the movie Reva, I came to know about this and now I am inspired to read more work from the author. This book is a gem and it shows on each page. Yes the telling is a bit unparalleled and it is inconveniently printed (without any pause marks, the chapter goes on and on). But it keeps you overwhelmed, making fall in love with nature and the characters. Not intended, but comparison is inevitable, of this author to Ruskin Bond. Keeping nature and philosophy in heart of the tale, the stories touch your heart. In the end you yourself want to take Parikrama around this lifeline of all, Reva.

તત્વમસિ અને અકૂપાર આ બંને રચના ઓ ને બિરદાવવા શબ્દો ઓછા પડે. આ બંને રચના વાંચ્યા પછી હંમેશા મારા અંતર સાથે જોડાયેલો પ્રકૃતિ પ્રેમ અને જે વ્યક્તિ અથવા સ્થિતિ જે ઘાટ માં ઘડાયેલા છે તે ઘાટ બદલ્યા વગર તેની પ્રગતિ થવી જોઈએ એવું મંતવ્ય વધુ પ્રબળ થયું છે.
અને આખરે તો પોતાને ત્યજી રેવા ની શોધ માં નીકળી જનાર ને રેવા મળે જ છે.

Surpiya, Guptaji, Parvatima and Ganesh Shastri are other important characters who come in touch with the protagonist.
Then, the story revolves around his constructive activities at the hermitage, his time with the tribes, and predominantly around the importance of the Narmada and her ecology! It is full of suspense.
Tattvamasi--literally, 'That Thou Art'--is one of the four great sentences of the Upanishads. This book tries to explain that unity between Atman and Brahman, apart from why Indian civilisation is still alive with vibrant social customs and traditions.
Written in a first-person narrative, the book is a work of fiction which won the Sahitya Academy Award in 2002. Later, a superhit and award-winning Gujarati movie Reva was also made by taking inspiration from this book.
This year, I have planned to read more books written in Gujarati. Thus, I picked this and finished it in a day.

कुछ पुस्तकें केवल शब्दों का संग्रह नहीं होती, एक समग्र होती हैं, यात्रा होती हैं। तत्त्वमसि ऐसी ही एक पुस्तक है।
इसे पढ़ने के बाद भी निश्चित रूप से यह नहीं कह सकता कि इसकी कथावस्तु क्या धर्म है, आध्यात्म है, या केवल नर्मदा!
हालांकि अनुवाद में कहीं कुछ एकाध कमियां लगी पर शायद अनुवाद में लेखक के वास्तविक मनोभाव को दर्शाना और पाठक के ध्यान को आकर्षित किए रखना अपने आप में एक कठिन कार्य है।
कुछ वर्तनी सम्बन्धी अशुद्धियों को छोड़ दे तो बाकी प्रयास बहुत अच्छा है।इस पुस्तक ने वर्षोंपरांत माँ नर्मदा से पुनः वैसा परिचय कराया जैसा इस उपन्यास के मुख्य पात्र का हुआ था।
परिक्रमा, संस्कृति, सुघड़ता से भरे इस पुस्तक ने मेरे अंदर के पाठक को पुनर्जीवित किया है।नर्मदा क्या है, ये देश कैसे नदियों कविताओं कहानियों की सेज पल रहा है इन सब का अनुभव इस उपन्यास में है।
शेष क्या कहूँ, इसे पढ़े बिना इसे जाना नहीं जा सकता।

हालांकि अनुवाद में कहीं कुछ एकाध कमियां लगी पर शायद अनुवाद में लेखक के वास्तविक मनोभाव को दर्शाना और पाठक के ध्यान को आकर्षित किए रखना अपने आप में एक कठिन कार्य है।
कुछ वर्तनी सम्बन्धी अशुद्धियों को छोड़ दे तो बाकी प्रयास बहुत अच्छा है।इस पुस्तक ने वर्षोंपरांत माँ नर्मदा से पुनः वैसा परिचय कराया जैसा इस उपन्यास के मुख्य पात्र का हुआ था।
परिक्रमा, संस्कृति, सुघड़ता से भरे इस पुस्तक ने मेरे अंदर के पाठक को पुनर्जीवित किया है।नर्मदा क्या है, ये देश कैसे नदियों कविताओं कहानियों की सेज पल रहा है इन सब का अनुभव इस उपन्यास में है।
शेष क्या कहूँ, इसे पढ़े बिना इसे जाना नहीं जा सकता।

Superb Book for the search of inner self!
This is one of the best books in Gujarati Literature.
Not only it emphasises the cultural harmony of our country, it also provides a perspective to look at it, and thus re-define our purpose of life.

Nature, Living beings and the Almighty are inseparable
I wasn't aware about either the book or the author before I saw the movie 'Reva'. I liked the movie so much that I bought this book and started to read it immediately.
While reading, one can paint a vivid picture of the hinterland around Narmada, the tribal cultures and traditions, the emotions and psychology of Parikramavasis, the challenges and perils that the developed/modern world poses to the conventional lifestyles that are in perfect harmony with Nature.
The author has made a commendable attempt to highlight the timeless fact - Nature, Living beings and the Almighty are inseparable. Being a Nature lover myself, having traveled in the Narmada region, the mountains of Maharashtra and having experienced the simplicity of people living close to the Nature and traditional lifestyles, I could relate to the content of the book. Such books dispel the misinformation that spiritualism is something absurd, renunciation is a loser's resort, culture and traditions are illogical and so on.
It's a good read, especially for the people of age group 30-45.
Note: I read the English translation in the Kindle format. It's riddled with typos.

સદિયોં થી ચાલી આવતી આપણી પરંપરા જે આધુનિકરણ અને વૈજ્ઞાનિક યુગમાં કોઈનાને માનવામાં ના આવે એવી અનેક દંતકથાઓ છોડી જાયે છે, અને સતત સનાતન એ પરંપરા એમની એમ ચાલી આવે છે. યુગો બદલાયા, વૈજ્ઞાનિક યુગમાં કેટલાક પ્રયોગો પણ થયા, પણ પરંપરા ઉભી ના રહી, એને તો બસ પરિસ્થિતિ અનુરૂપ થોડાઘણા પરિવર્તન કર્યા અને ચાલુ ની ચાલુ રહી. હવે કેટલાક સ્વયંસેવકો આ પરંપરા ને જીવતી રાખવા મેહનત કરે છે. ભારત ના વનમાં રેહવા વાળી પ્રજા સંસાધનો અને કોઈ પણ મદદ વગર પણ વનો ની અંદર આનંદ માં રહે છે, એમના જીવન અને જીવન જીવવાની કળા આ પુસ્તક માં જોવા મળે છે. જ્યાં સ્વાર્થ નહીં, યંત્ર નહીં આધુનિકતા થી દુર, જ્યાં માણસ માં ભરોસો છે, એવા વન ની અંદર પોતાની દુનિયા માં આનંદ થી રેહતી આ પ્રજા જે પ્રકૃતિ ને જ માં માને છે, અને પ્રકૃતિ પણ એમને સંતાન ની જેમ ઉછેરે છે.

This is a philosophical treatise. Author narrates the story of a well-to-do man with education in the West coming to Central India with the aim of improving human resources in the tribal belt of Central India. While living in the tribals, he begins questioning his ethos, loses his identity and rediscovers himself. The book provokes several questions - Does relentless focus professional success bring lasting happiness? What is the meaning of Joy? How is it different from material happiness? What is the primary purpose of existence? Can we learn anything from the illiterate tribals in terms of civil values? What are the paradigms of human resource development? Can man live aloof of nature? Is environment conscious development possible? Every reader will have his own answer to these questions and to a great extent we know them.

એક વિસંગત કથા..
તત્ત્વમસી એક અદ્ભુત કથા છે. નર્મદા અને એના જંગલો, ત્યાંના લોકો અને એમની દુનિયા રૂબરૂ આંખો સામે દેખાઈ આવે છે. કોઈ નદી માત્ર એક જળાશય નથી હોતી. એ એક ઇતિહાસ, પરંપરા અને સંસ્કૃતિ પણ હોય છે આ ભટ્ટ સાહેબે બહુ સરસ રીતે આમાં બતાવી છે.
પણ પુસ્તક માં એક મોટી સમસ્યા છે.
એ છે નર્મદા નો નજીકના ભૂતકાળનો ઇતિહાસ. સરદાર સરોવર બંધ માં કેટલાયે આદિવાસી ઘરો, ગામો, મંદિરો, પરિક્રમા ના સ્થળો ડુબાઈ ગયા. કેટલાંઓ તો હજી પુનર્વાસ માટે જ્યાં ત્યાં દોડે છે. એમનો કેમ આમાં જરાય ઉલ્લેખ નથી?
જે ભાષા મા આ લખાઈ છે એજ પ્રદેશ માટે જ તો આ બંધ બનાવ્યો. કેટલાય આ ચોપડીનાં વાચકો એજ નર્મદા નું પાણી પીતા હશે, એનાથી નહાતા ને વાસણો પણ ધોતા હશે!
પુસ્તક માં સંસ્કૃતિ, ધર્મ અને દેશ વિશય ઘણા સુંદર વિચારો છે. દુર્દઈવે મારા માટે આ માત્ર વિસંગતતા જ છે.

Very good book and deserve the award it won. Definitely something different. Its not the general novel one expect to read a totally different story which will reconnect you to with nature. Narmade Har.
