At thirty-four, the veteran St. Louis winger has spent more than a decade turning pain into championships — and keeping his mouth shut about everything else. But when a man connected to Nolan's former team dies trying to contact him, the Guardians are brought in quietly before the Stanley Cup Final begins.
Former Olympic hopeful Elias Ward is assigned to protect hockey's most stubborn client through the biggest series of his career. Stay close. Control the risk. Don't get emotionally involved.
Simple.
Except Nolan remembers things he shouldn't about the long-ago death of a rookie teammate. Things someone powerful thought had stayed buried. Things that may explain why Nolan's body has been slowly failing him for years.
Now the attacks around Nolan are escalating. The Stanley Cup Final is days away. And Elias is falling for a man who treats injuries like inconveniences, hides guilt behind playoff grit, and refuses to stop digging for the truth — even when that truth may get them both killed.
Because the body remembers what the record forgot.
Excellent story. Suspense and mystery. What failed me was the writing style and a few misses on the execution. Not here nor there, I still read it in one sitting, just not my personal favorite 😊
'Thin Ice' (The Gardians, #4) written by Declan Rhodes (Kindle)
Wow, what a great book; I confess to staying up all night to finish it!
If you like edge-of-your-seat thrillers by a consummate writer, then this book is right in your wheelhouse! Not to mention a burgeoning attraction between two guys who know how to both be strong when needed, and how to be vulnerable and caring when they choose to allow someone inside their protective emotional walls.
M/M sports theme mystery-thriller that will blow your socks off! Definitely a nail-biting, roller-coaster of a ride featuring Elias, the Guardian bodyguard assigned to protect Nolan. And Nolan, the hockey player with multiple injuries both old and new, preparing to play his heart out in his team's pursuit of the coveted Stanley Cup Trophy! This is his last game before he retires; can his team pull it off?
Everything comes to a head during the current hockey season's playoffs to win the Stanley Cup trophy, both professionally and personally!
In addition: Years of manipulation by the company assigned to care for the health of the hockey players, as players have been dying and the details of the causes of those deaths covered up.
Fantastic storytelling kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the tale! Throughout all that trauma-drama happening, the hockey player and the bodyguard start to fall in love.
Where does a professional draw the line between their job and personal life? How will their relationship affect both Elias' attention to keep them both safe if he's distracted? Can Nolan keep his focus on the game and not compromise his ability to "read the ice" and the other players, plus deal with the pain of old injuries?
Can they manage to, you know... stay alive, to win the Stanley Cup trophy, to have a real relationship without evrything "going to Hell in a hand-basket"?
Who is stalking Nolan?
How many more games can Nolan play before his bruised and battered body finally gives out?
Should Elias confess his growing feelings about Nolen to his bosses and take the chance they might pull him off this case just before the big game? Or at all?
Who is murdering hockey players, making their deaths look like accidents...and why..and is Nolan next?
Convoluted tale of espionage involving long-term medical experiments and cover-ups by people and businesses who's motives are "squiffy"---
"Ye gods and little fishes! What can these guys do to stay safe?"
Can't hardly wait to see what Rhodes conjures up next in his tales!
Two thumbs up! 👍👍

The MCs changes in every book from this series, from guardian to principal, this one has an hockey player ending his career with lots of pain and a conspiracy from a wellmess center that gives athlets miracle pils to conceal pain. Very good book
This has been an interesting series all along, combining romance and intrigue as a members of the Guardians protection team are called on to protect athletes, musicians, reporters and other people of importance in situations putting them in danger. This book has 34 year old hockey player Nolan as part of a team in the playoffs leading up to the Stanley Cup, under the full time protection of Guardian Elias, hired by the team as part of an investigation into the death of two people affiliated with the team more than 30 years ago.(Nolan doesn’t know this part) as well as general protection of players heading into a playoff situation with tensions in the city running high. Nolan has a hip injury which requires him to follow a strict exercise regimen daily to enable him to function normally on the ice and in life in general. Elias is a former athlete with a previous career related to sports medicine, something which he brings his expertise to as he helps Nolan with his hip.
Almost 30 years ago, a young team member died of a heart problem after the team was involved in a wellness study. Recently, a former equipment manager from that time had been trying to get in touch with Nolan before his death. This raised enough questions to prompt the protection of Nolan in the current time as answers are being sought if there is any connection between the two deaths and the attempted contact of Nolan. Clues keep popping up in the investigation at the same time Nolan and Elias are together 24/7, leading to an attraction and developing feelings, all occurring in the hockey background of players, practice, and games.
Clues come in spurts as Elias is trying to piece things together while keeping this part of the guarding from Nolan, which obviously creates problems once it comes to light. I found myself trying to figure out exactly what happened 30 years ago, how it relates to Nolan and the present, and who may be responsible for the deaths, if they are in fact related and not just a coincidence. Nolan, Elias, and many of Nolan’s teammates are realistic, relatable, and engaging, playing parts in the ongoing search for answers while keeping Nolan safe and continuing on their drive to the Cup. There is a lot of hockey action, a low spice relationship building between Nolan and Elias, and a creepy feeling of things happening in the background that may threaten Nolan’s safety. I read the book in mostly one sitting, anxious to find out where it was going, then satisfied at the end. The series together, and this book by itself had me on the edge of my seat a few times, smiling or chuckling at others, all while thoroughly engaged in the mystery as I tried to “solve” it myself. A great read. I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review..
The one being protected falls in love and helps expose questionable pro athlete recovery regimens
Nolan Mercer is a member of a hockey team competing for the Stanley Cup. He is 34 years old, competes despite injuries, and is haunted by a former teammate who perished while attempting to reach him. He carries a warning uncovered alongside the deaths of other athletes, all of whom had participated in questionable injury-recovery treatments. These treatments are administered by an individual who has turned injury recovery into a television spectacle.
Following the death, Nolan is assigned Elias Ward, a former Olympic swimmer hopeful with a PhD in recovery protocols. As others succumb under similar circumstances to the death of Nolan’s former teammate, Ward uncovers connections and provides close protection for Nolan. With his academic credentials and personal expertise in body recovery, Ward endeavors to assist Nolan with his regimen to manage his frail condition.
Against the backdrop of a Stanley Cup run, others are hurt, an attack is made against Nolan, and Nolan's connection to Nolan deepens as Elias cares for him. It almost destroys Nolan when he learns that Elias has been working to gather more information about the questionable protocols administered by the clinic and the deaths and denials associated with the clinic and its charismatic leader.
The investigation reveals that the other fatalities are linked to a clinic offering a protocol designed to conceal pain. Additional individuals have died under unusual circumstances and share a history of receiving treatments from this clinic.
Author Declan Rhodes has thoroughly incorporated realistic reactions to the unfolding events within his narrative. While primarily recognized as a romantic novelist, his work merits recognition as a mystery and crime writer, given the meticulous detail, engagement, and troubling elements present in his stories.
I might have given a 4.5 instead of a 5 because this was so detailed, so full of the wonderful world-building that Mr. Rhodes does, that it was a bit confusing sometimes. The story and the emotions evoked were so powerful that I went for the full 5 stars. I like stories that, when it gets a bit long, give me some structural references. Frequently, that's a retelling of the key points with a new character or a reference. This is a great story with intrigue and love, and it is worth reading!
This is book four in The Guardians series, and while it can be read as a standalone, I think you enjoy it more when you are familiar with the recurring characters from previous stories.
Nolan is a veteran hockey player on a team that will be playing for the Stanley Cup, and Elias is the bodyguard brought in to protect him, but for reasons Nolan is unaware of at the beginning. As these men spend more time together learning daily routines, and discovering shared interests, the friendship will develop into a romantic attraction for one another and grow as the playoff finals get closer. Nolan must decide what life has in store after his hockey career is over, and Elias will have to choose where he wants his career to lead once Nolan becomes an important part of his existence. They will go through many challenges on their way to HEA, but each one makes their relationship stronger.
For those that enjoy hockey, you will feel like you are at every game they play. This is a wonderful combination of romance and suspense that only Declan Rhodes can write. The characters are brought to life beautifully and the readers are engaged immediately. The supporting characters will make you laugh out loud and your heart will smile at the way they created their own found family.
Declan Rhodes is a must-read author, and I would recommend him for everyone.
This was a fantastic blend of sports romance and suspense that kept me hooked from beginning to end. The mystery unfolds alongside the romance, making it nearly impossible to put down as each new revelation raises the stakes.
Nolan is a compelling hero being a veteran hockey player who's spent years pushing through pain while carrying the weight of secrets he's never fully confronted. His determination and resilience made him easy to root for, even when his stubbornness had me wanting to shake some sense into him. Elias is the perfect counterbalance: calm, protective, and patient, yet never afraid to challenge Nolan when it matters most. Their chemistry builds naturally, and the trust that develops between them feels genuine.
The suspense is just as strong as the romance, with plenty of twists, danger, and unanswered questions that kept me guessing. The behind-the-scenes look at professional hockey adds authenticity without overwhelming the story, and even readers who aren't sports fans should have no trouble following along.
With emotional depth, gripping action, and a satisfying romance, this is an engaging read that balances heart-pounding suspense with heartfelt moments. I couldn't stop turning the pages and was left eager to see where this series goes next.
This book is part of the Guardians series and for me was a joy to read. The guardians tie back to another series Rhodes authored as the people assigned to be guardians report back to one of the brothers in the earlier series.
In this book, I had some difficulty figuring out Elias' background. It is clear he had an accident that ruined his career as a swimmer but he also seems to have had a long-term interest in a company that was involved with Nolan' early years as a hockey player. Nolan is being protected as the Stanley Cup playoffs and he is playing in his 30s with a hip deteriorating which he tries to hide.
Nolan remembers a young player who died and is anxious to find out why and now several others are also dying. Nolan comes to distrust Elias as he discovers by accident a paper about Elias' assignment. He leaves for a walk in the park and Elais feels he cannot follow but Nolan is hurt bu a car gunning towards him.
Let me say, that I took a sabbatical at Washington University in St Louis where this takes place and yes the park is between the University and the medical facilities that come up throughout this book but the author has made the distance seem less than it actually is and done it well.
Declan Rhodes is an author I follow closely and enjoy his books.
Nolan Mercer is a veteran hockey star who’s spent years turning pain into performance, but when a man tied to his old team dies trying to reach him, the Guardians quietly assign Elias Ward to protect him during the Stanley Cup Final. What should be a simple job spirals fast: Nolan remembers dangerous things about a rookie’s long‑ago death, his body is failing, and someone powerful wants the past to stay buried. As attacks escalate, Elias finds himself falling for the man he’s meant to guard, even as Nolan refuses to stop digging for the truth — a truth that could get them both killed.
A great suspense story wrapped around a romance, this book pulled me in from the start. I loved Nolan and Elias’s relationship and the way they managed to stay connected and supportive even with all the pressure surrounding them both. The medical details felt believable, and the tie‑in with ice hockey made everything even more grounded. Their thoughts and emotions were easy to feel and understand, and I found myself fully invested as the danger escalated and the truth came to light. I loved that in the end everything worked out, giving them the well‑deserved HEA they’d fought so hard for. This was an MM story with mature content.
This series just gets better with each book and it’s engaging story-line and characters!
Nolan Mercer 34 is aiming for retirement after his last and final game to win the coveted Stanley Cup, but this seasoned hockey player is hiding a secret- he has been playing with a hip injury…
Elias Ward 38 is an ex swimming athlete, Professor and now a sport bodyguard for The Guardians. He gets assigned to investigate mysterious deaths surrounding his principle and subject-,Nolan Mercer.
This is where their adventure begins with two men who can read rooms and people (especially each other) easily and yet keep secrets that could be harmful to a growing fledgling relationship like theirs until they learn to trust each other completely with full disclosures…
They are skating on thin ice regarding the mystery of unexplained murders revolving around a clinic specialising in suppressed pain in athletes…
A thrilling, engaging read with good spacing, a dash of intrigue, a splash of romance and a well rounded off epilogue!
I voluntarily received an ARC from the author for an honest non biased review.
In an engaging combination of sports, mystery, and romance, Thin Ice brings together two high-level athletes--one guarding his current pain and inching toward retirement, one guarding his past pain from a career-ending injury. What might be seen as standard operating procedure of providing security for a star player during a high-stakes playoff is actually much more, and the twists and turns that Elias follows to keep Nolan safe and investigate the mystery elevated by a dying former team member are fascinating.
The central mystery is difficult to describe without spoilers. The professional highs and lows for Elias are stunning, and the reader feels the gut-punch along with him as the camaraderie he's been missing dissolves in the heat of the investigation.
As always, I was intrigued by the technical aspects Rhodes explored in the world of pain management and recovery for professional athletes. He manages to make something that could be pretty esoteric engaging. Even the interactions with The Guardians were a surprise!
Fourth in series (The Guardians), but can be read as a standalone. Bodyguard. Close proximity. Mature characters. Dual POV.
This might be his last year playing professional hockey, and Nolan has been assigned a personal bodyguard now that his team is nearing the finals. However, Elias is not just there to protect, but also investigate some suspicious deaths linked to medical therapy done on athletes.
An interesting side of investigating that I honestly didn’t understand entirely but the suspense and building romance kept me turning the pages. The way this author writes conversations and observations at times in a shorthand actually kept me on my toes, as you quickly discern the characters are very intuitive in reading other people. Both Elias and Nolan were interesting and likable and I did like that there wasn’t any angst in the private parts of their relationship (and no discussion of Nolan being an out hockey player which was rather nice). Overall, an entertaining story and now I plan to read the rest of the series.
I have read almost all of Rhodes’s books and one of my favorite series was First in Line (the McCabe’s & I miss Ma). That series evolved into The Guardians series and this is his fourth novel. Two athletes, different sports, are brought together because one of them is a Guardian. Sparks fly, then they don’t, then it’s all the way. Unexpected suspense, a couple of uh oh movements of what in the world just happened, maybe murder (you will have to decide) but definitely attempted murder, snake oil medical treatment, pharmaceuticals, dark corporations…all centered around a hockey legend who’s still playing at 34. You don’t have to understand hockey to enjoy this novel. A thriller which also gives new meaning to “push through the pain”. Rhodes always includes philosophy and psychology of relationships to which we should pay attention. And of course, there’s spicy romance. But exactly what is thin ice? This is a hard novel to put down and one night, I read it until 3 AM to finish. I’m ready for novel number five. Enjoy!!
Book four ups the game in this series. I feel hard for Elias and Nolan as both are written like strong independent but flawed me (sorta like real life). Nolan has spent years turning his pain in playing hockey Ito winning championship. When attacks start. Elias is brought in to protect him. Of course there is more than meets the eye as Elias starts investigating some injury recovery treatments from a clinic that have caused deaths, ie. murder. when Nolan finds out what Elias is up to it almost ends their relationship but feelings win out. The perfect blend of romance/suspense/mystery that kept me reading (in one sitting) as I had to know how it ended. Expect some emotions along the way as you read but the pay off is so worth it. One of my top two favorite artists who never disappoints me in a book.
I just love how Declan writes. His characters fall in love in the quiet moments, the in between the moments, and the the moments that aren't necessarily written on the page.
I must admit, It took me a bit to wrap my head around the mystery in this one and why Nolan needed a bodyguard, that’s where the .5 came off. Once I figured it all out, the mystery unfolded a little more smoothly for me, and I was able to focus more on the character building and the relationship developing between the two main characters.
The story was a great mix of mystery, suspense, and romance, intertwined with side characters and characters we get to revisit from past books. Let’s not forget about the hockey! Mystery, romance, two great MC’s, and the best sport in the world… I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it
When Nolan gets hired a bodyguard, he thinks its the norm. On the way to lift the Stanley Cup, the city has gone a bit crazy, but what if his past catches up with his present. Nolan is nearing the end of his career, hiding a hip injury, he wants to end his career on a high, Elias, the assigned bodyguard has a lot of layers, he knows what an injury can do to a sports career and with his knowledge of the human body, he is perfect for the job. The mystery of the deceased rookie is the front of this story and I was drawn into a story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The hockey, romance and mystery blended smoothly as I went from action on the ice to following the investigation. I found more about Eammon who as of now is a voice at the end of the phone as he helped Elias balance his attraction to Nolan all whilst keeping Nolan safe. The is quite a bit of science in this book, but at no time was I confused, it all added to the mystery. This story kept me reading way past my bedtime.
Thin Ice is the 4th book in The Guardians series. In my opinion this series is best read in order. This is the story of Nolan a hockey player and Elias who is assigned to protect him. I couldn't put this book down once I started it. I loved this book so much. I loved the watching Nolan and Elias build a relationship while trying to solve a mystery. All the characters are so well written. The story felt so real, like it is something that could actually happen in life. I love the chemistry between these two. I know I will be reread this book because of how well written it is. I hope we get more books in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series as 5 star reads. received a free review copy
Elias is hired as Nolan‘s bodyguard but the reason why remain remains a mystery for me and Nolan story. Space as Nolan enters what could be his final NHL season, he’s battling worsening hip issues while chasing one last chance to lift the Stanley Cup. As the secrets behind the bodyguard assignment slowly comes to light so does the traction between Elias and Nolan.
The story does a great job balancing suspense and romance, keeping the mystery and folding it just the right pace. With thrilling moments, plenty of unanswered questions and supportive teammates. It’s an engaging read that proves sometimes the biggest battles happen both on and off the ice.
I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily leaving my review.
Declan Rhodes delivers a gripping blend of hockey romance and suspense, following veteran NHL player Nolan Mercer as a Stanley Cup run collides with a deadly conspiracy surrounding an experimental recovery clinic. Paired with recovery specialist Elias Ward, Nolan must navigate mounting danger, painful secrets, and growing feelings while the investigation uncovers disturbing links between athlete deaths and a charismatic clinic leader.
The mystery is tightly woven, the emotional stakes are high, and the romance develops naturally amid the tension. While the intricate world-building can occasionally feel dense, the payoff is absolutely worth it. A compelling, heartfelt read that balances thrilling intrigue with a deeply satisfying love story.
Another solid read by Rhodes, including lots of professional hockey and interesting characters. Nolan is a pro with one good hip left. Elias has been hired to provide security for him in the stretch leading up to the Stanley Cup. He also has a back channel mystery to check out, involving crippled players using experimental drugs, and puzzling deaths. As usual, Rhodes leads us into a complex web, using technical language with a deft hand as he moves a parallel path to the developing love story. He moves everything around like a chess board. Luckily for us, the complicated plot ends are tied up neatly!
Another great entry by Rhodes in the Guardian series. Hockey as party of the suspense story; sign me up! I think Rhodes is at his best when he writes about hockey and this one does not disappoint. A company seems to have been running experiments on hockey players, perhaps trying to build a better athlete, but at what cost to the athlete? At first I was not so sure about a hockey player needing a body guard, but then, I was like, why not, I am sure there are some crazy fans out there, especially around playoff time. As with the other books, there is no need to read the first ones, they can all be read on their own. I received an ARC for my honest review.
Nolan has been playing with an injured hip for years, but it's hockey and that's standard, right. This year they're in the run or the Stanley Cup. Win or lose, Nolan will retire at the end of the run, but he really wants that cup. Participants in an injury recovery protocol from 14 years earlier are dying at an alarming rate; now someone is after Nolan. Enter bodyguard Elias, but is everything as it seems, or does Elias have another agenda. Classic Declan Rhodes, a tightly woven tale of conspiracy and shadowy intent with a side order of romance.
Elias is sent by the Guardians to be a bodyguard for Nolan, an NHL player in the finals for the cup. When they feel attraction they try to suppress it. But there is a mystery in the background about a young player years ago. Nolan's hip is shot so he's been hiding it for a while but that's getting noticed. It's a quiet romance inserted in an espionage thriller with someone doing everything they can to contain the truth and damage. I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion.
Nolan is a hockey player that requires the service of the Guardians and Elias is the one to do the job. This is a twisted intertwined story that evolves over time. Truths come out about an old teammate and along with the hip issues that Nolan has to deal with. Nolan and Elias work well together and falling for each other is a slow burn.
This was definitely stronger than the other book in this series I read, and I liked the mystery aspect (though it wasn't focused on as clearly as the relationship aspect). But, the relationship was also stronger; even though it was on the fast side, both Nolan and Elias were a little more thoughtful about how they felt and how they wanted to proceed. All in all, a nice read.
Thin Ice is the fourth book in the Guardians series, it can be read as a standalone but I think is better in order. This is a suspenseful story about Elias and Nolan. Another fantastic storyline and great characters in the series. I loved this book and hope to see more in the series.
The characters, both the "principal" and the "Guardian" may change, but one thing that does not change is that the stories are superbly written; deep and complex. Thank you, Declan, for gifting us your books.😊
Elias is to bodyguard Nolan, a hockey player as he goes into the final of the Stanley Cup. Nolan's body is giving up on him and he knows that this will be his last season. There is a mystery as previous acquaintices of Nolan are killed. Not too much sex. One of the better books in the series.
This is a great story of a Bodyguard/investigator and a hockey player. One thing with this author, his stories are very descriptive. A great book in the series and can be read as a stand alone.
