Robin Soans reads this original adventure featuring the 12th Doctor and Clara, as played by Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the BBC TV series.
The TARDIS is summoned to an ‘space cathedral’ by Shadrak Winter, the High Cardinal of the Cult of the Prime Self. Soon to be relieved of his post by way of assassination, Shadrak has used his family’s calling card to bring the Doctor to his aid. His followers have long fled the Sinful, highly contagious slug-like creatures which he himself has succumbed to - and which now imperil the Doctor and Clara.
As Clara discovers more about the Cult of the Prime Self - currently the fourth most popular religion - the Doctor becomes infected, all but lost to appalling guilt and self-recrimination. As he seeks to absolve himself of his perceived sins, Clara must use all her survival instincts to escape the Sinful’s advances and rescue her vulnerable friend.
Robin Soans, who appeared in the 1981 Doctor Who serial The Keeper of Traken as well as in Series 9 in 2015, reads this atmospheric original adventure by James Goss, part of the Tales of Winter quartet of stories. Duration: 1 hour 10 mins approx.
James Goss has written two Torchwood novels and a radio play, as well as a Being Human book. His Doctor Who audiobook Dead Air won Best Audiobook 2010. James also spent seven years working on the BBC's official Doctor Who website and co-wrote the website for Torchwood Series One. In 2007, he won the Best Adaptation category in the annual LA Weekly Theatre Awards for his version of Douglas Adams' novel Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
I was about to give this three stars just because of the annoying voice of the man who read it but... This story turned out to be really interesting and somehow it reminded of almost every single reason why I already desperately miss Clara Oswald. I think every fun should give it a go.
Full disclosure this story features two of my least favorite people in the Who-franchise (Clara and 12th), and if I hadn’t been driving I would not have listened to Doctor Who: Twelfth Doctor Tales: Twelfth Doctor Audio Originals but changed to something else – anything else.
Oh boy, what a story. I don’t know where to begin. Its just bad. Just bad. Body horror mixed with the sci-fi trope of taking some random concept to the extreme – here religion as a business. Add into this mix Clara’s “power” of being a teacher…. It’s a mess. Just one big mess.
Book 3 of the "Winter Series". Seeing a pattern, last 2 books have used gross crawlies as the baddies (book 2 Bloth Moths, book 3 Sin Slugs) that feed on/in human flesh.
Series has gone down with each entry. Hope finale will wrap it up and lift Series as a whole!!!
