Retired from the legal world to country life surrounded by animals ."Bearswood End" is my first fictional work in print but I write away when the animals let me. "Mr Perkins takes Charge" has been influenced by humans and cats in my life but especially cats. " Forever Waste" received a badge from the International Review of books and the reviewers comments included saying "Overall, an adorable romantic satire for those who enjoy seeing love win out for good people."
As you know, I never read blurbs before reading a book and I tend to just go off the front cover images and the feeling I get from them.
I really loved the look of this cover image and was intrigued about what was in store.
Now, ok, I know that it actually tells me on the cover that this is an action adventure thriller, but I really didn't get that vibe from the cover and if I'm honest, I didn't really get much thriller whilst reading.
But, having said this, I really enjoyed following Mike and Sarah on their trip overseas to visit family in Canada.....and seeing how their errand turned out.
When one of junior solicitor, Mike's clients hears that he's heading out to Niagara, he asks a favour of him and I'm not sure how legal this errand sounded, but after checking with his boss, it's agreed that the message and items can be delivered.
When we arrive in Canada, we get to know Mike's wife Sarah and her cousin Nerys and her husband Richie much better.
Richie was a font of knowledge and I loved hearing all of the information about the places that they visited and the different tourist attractions around Toronto and Ottowa.
As we head off to Niagara, the nature of the errand takes shape more and as they try to retrieve an item from storage, Mike and Richie realise they're being followed and an adventure ensues.
I wasn't entirely sure when this book was set (until nearer the end) but I picked this up through the references to the music playing throughout.
These bands and songs really took me back to my youth and I loved getting nostalgic remembering them all.
This was my first read by this author and I hadn't realised that it followed on from an earlier book about Mike - I wish I'd read them in order - but this still made total sense and I never felt like I'd missed anything from before.
I enjoyed this journey across Canada, getting to visit all the sights alongside Mike and company, although it wasn't quite the relaxing holiday he had in mind! I really liked the story, a quick read that I raced through and really wanted to know how the adventure was going to turn out. It was fun seeing the twists and turns they took trying to get the job done while also getting to sightsee around Canada, and having Richie with him meant he was constantly hearing all about all the different places and their history which was fascinating. I've never been to Canada and apart from how far away it is I'd love to visit so this was lovely to read about. I loved the fact this book was set in 1990 because I feel like most books are set in the time they were written unless they're historical fiction which is usually in my experience set much longer ago. So it's not an era I've read many books set in and was interesting to see, and the lack of mobile phones really added to the adventure. I did discover afterwards that Mike has actually been in one of Suzanne's previous books so I'd have liked to read that first, but story-wise the two aren't related and this can absolutely be read as a standalone if you desire. I didn't feel like I was missing anything throughout the book and it didn't feel like there had been any previous books I should have read so I didn't notice until I found the synopses of her other books after the acknowledgements and spotted Mike's name. I'd definitely like to read that one in future though to see more of Mike's earlier life and about his brother's wife who is mentioned briefly in this book. I love the cover featuring some lovely Canadian elements and the arty style, and I'll definitely be reading more of Suzanne's books in the future.
I'm reviewing this as part of a tour with Hygge Book Tours.
At first, this read a little bit like a memoir which I found lighthearted and entertaining. After a while though, the thriller element of the story came through. I found Mike's narrative more intimate, as though he began to share secrets with the reader. There were things about the trip to Niagara that felt unexpected.
The story is set in 1990, and I appreciated the throwback and nostalgia, thinking about a time when people connected in different ways because technology wasn't quite as present. This was a short read that felt like an escape.
Thank you to Hygge Book Tours, and to the author and publisher, for the opportunity to read and review this.
When Mike gets a request to do a favour for his boss on his trip to Canada, he feels like he has no choice but to agree. He doesnt realise quite what hes let himself i for however. For a relatively short story, this certainly packs it in, and so much happens. I enjoyed it when Mike and Richie went off on their own. One of Suzanne's strengths has always been her description of place, and this is no exception. I really felt like I was there. Somewhere I have never been, but i am now dying to, to see what's been written. Its a great engaging story and I enjoyed following their adventures. The characters are well developed and I feel like a lot of them have more to say.
From the moment I picked this book up I was hooked, it was such an easy book to get completely absorbed in and I absolutely flew through it!
I could not put this book down, I needed to know how things were going to end! I love a good thriller and I would definitely recommend this to other thriller lovers!
Long Weekend at Niagara is an absolute joy to reads, I had no hesitation when it came to picking the book back up and I didn't want to put it down!
The flow of this book is so good, there's no lull where you're trying to force yourself through whilst you wait for it to pick up.
If you're looking for an easy read thriller then this is the one for you!
Long Weekend at Niagara by Suzanne Stephenson. This was a really good read. We get taken on a adventure to Niagara falls Ontario, the Algonquin, and Toronto through Mike and Sarah. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I did like the writing style and the story. I love this author. This is the 6th nook I've read by this author. I would definitely recommend this book.
A short read but I really enjoyed the journey and travel around Toronto. There was a lot packed into these 100pages, it was a gripping read, I really enjoyed the story and how the story started slowly then picked up pace as you read further. The descriptions throughout gave an excellent feel for the characters and the surroundings.
