Save a Horse...

Rate this book
When Sheriff Sky Hayden gets word of human remains behind the Indigo Diamond Ranch, he not only has to deal with the possibility of a murderer in their small town, but is haunted by a handsome cowboy. One he can’t seem to get out of his mind.
Cole Diamond, his father, and his two brothers work a horse ranch in a dying town in Montana. The downturn in the economy, the businesses leaving, has decimated the remaining town’s folk and the last thing they need for their livelihood is the publicity of a murder.
With everyone under suspicion, Sky has to bear the brunt of the investigation as the State patrol begins to dig deep into the lives of the people who have lived quietly off the radar.
And Sky and Cole are forced to face each other, something they had managed to avoid doing for years.
As the pressure builds and accusations are made, Sky and Cole end up together once more, forming a united front against outsiders trying to destroy their small hometown.
But soon the men realize the suspicion falls on them, but not for homicide…for something that is perceived as a worse crime.
Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy was just a silly expression to sell on souvenir T-shirts. Until the sheriff figures out ‘riding a cowboy’ may be just what he needs to keep sane.
Someone is going to get strung up in that town for crimes they didn’t commit. The two men hope like hell, it’s not going to be them.

I just read the best ending ever. I absolutely loved it and I loved the men of Sheriff Sky and his cowboy Cole.
Cole and Sky had a beautiful story, and it drew out feelings in me I didn't expect.
I hated the townspeople and I hated the family who ridiculed these men. But I loved that they saved themselves for love. It gave me a big ole smile and I was jumping for joy when they pushed past their fears, through those bigoted barriers.
The mystery of the dead young lady was well thought out and realistically revealed in good timing with the other events of the story. The state troopers and detectives were high on my shit list with their offensive remarks.
If you love gay romance with a true love theme and a puzzling mystery you will like this book. You may wanna kill some of those haters along with me. But hey, kudos to the author for calling them out as they are, a fave quote from the book...Yes, haters were going to hate…but between this cowboy and this sheriff…love won.

Okay, the hot buttons that got hit in Save a Horse – a virgin, here we have two, characters who wait a while for someone they want but can’t have, pent up desires, teasing, stealing (very) secret moments when they can be stolen. Plus there’s a mystery, although I worked out who the culprit was immediately. Still, it was interesting reading. All of the aforementioned buttons were pressed with Save a Horse… and that cover? It’s gorgeous. The title cute.

At the end of the day, even though I had a couple of niggles, Save a Horse was a very enjoyable read. It caught me at the right time, in the right mood and I like the way G.A. Hauser writes moment-stealing, desperate sex. I loved it in Born to be Wilde and I really liked it here. If you’re in the mood for a cowboy with a law enforcement officer, some easy, quick, sexy reading, small town love with two guys who just want to be together, this works. If you like the sound of the hot buttons I mentioned, then I recommend Save a Horse to you.

I loved the cover. It was perfect for the story and yet it was a artistic picture in its own right.

Two how virgins, one a cowboy and one a cop, add a small town in a rural area with conservative views on love and marriage and you get a heart felt story of true love.

The MCs were just sexy, real and wonderful. They tried to ignore the love and lust they felt for each other, but it was impossible. My heart ached for them. The mystery was important to the story. The local reaction to State Police descending on their town was real. It did not matter to me that the police/sheriff details were not correct in their detail. It did not detract from the story. G Hauser's prose was spot on. I listened on audible books. The narrator, Nick J. Russo, was perfect in his accent and inflection.

A fun light read that still had emotional depth.

Ugh. Not connecting with this *at all*. Plus I'm quite certain there is going to be a crap ton of homophobic, intolerant assholes in this story and I def don't have the brain space for that right now. DNF no rating.

This is an audio review.
I love this cover! I have from the day I saw it all those years ago and yes this is also a retro review as this is not a new book but one I highly suggest anyone that likes a sexy suspense, cowboys and small-town sheriffs grab.
Sky is a small town sheriff. Cole is the son of the owner of the Diamond Ranch a failing ranch in their small town that has tours and horse riding classes and is struggling. Sky gets a call that bones have been found o the edge of the Diamond ranch and soon it is discovered it is the remains of a human girl missing form Billings.
Sky seeing Cole again brings back lots of feelings since both men have had feelings since high school and neither have really been dating much.
The murder brings the state police into town and the digging brings up more than just who killed the girl.
I loved both Sky and Cole and even all the other characters were fabulous too. The suspense is great and the stolen times between Sky and Cole super hot.
Now bring in the narration of Nick J Russo and an already great story just gets better. Russo adds that nuance to the narration only he can. and be careful listening to this in public... Nick's sexy times can make you sweat. He doesn't just read it baby his moans and groans are x rated!

Ride a cowboy

Cole and Sky were best friends growing up but avoided each other after high school. When something happens in their small town bringing them face to face they realize the attraction is still there. G.A. Hauser writes such great stories about love and finding the courage to follow your heart and this story is just that.

Life in a small town means that being be a little different makes a person stand out in often uncomfortable ways and trying to keep secrets is almost impossible. This murder mystery/gay romance highlights both those facts in several ways.

The twists the author built into a seemingly obvious plot add some bite to the story. So do the characters. Sky and Cole have an interesting dynamic that moves the story in an unexpected direction. The resolution was comfortable, but I hope these characters show up in more of Hauser's books.

Russo's narration is entertaining and the quirks in his accent add some flavor to the characters.

I got the audiobook version of this, narrated by Nick J Russo. He was fab, but I found the story was underdeveloped. There were lines like "He picked up a can of soup and stirred it as it heated" Errr. Did he open the can, pour it into a pot, get a spoon?

There was lots of underwriting in this story and while it had the bones of a good mystery the lack of development let it down.

Eh, it ended well enough for me, and the story wasn't bad. But I thought some of the dialogue and the plot were kinda funny. I'd probably pick it up again some day, especially because I used an Audible credit on it.

I usually don't do pining, but in Save a Horse Ms. Hauser really pulled it off. Two guys, closeted out of fear for their lives are brought together due to a murder. The romance was solid, the sex was hot, so naturally the murder plot was weak and I knew whodunnit right away, but that's okay.

Some of the police procedures left me wondering how realistic they were, but then again I'm far from an expert, and those sort of things rarely bother me. The huge build-up on the towns homophobia, on the other hand was strange, as at the end our MCs were dancing and out in public without much of a reaction.

The HEA felt especially deserved and brought out some happy sighs from me.
