Gailsone: Hit is a free epilogue to Gailsone: Black Days. It was originally included in the Black Days paperback collection.
Hit focuses on Alice, who has reached her emotional limit after recent events. After a violent confrontation with a would-be supervillain and a sobering talk with Miss Major, Alice decides to try to reconnect with a part of her past.
This is a short end-cap to the Black Days series, and while it helps to wrap up some things, it never quite fit as part of the last novella. To that end, this piece was cut, and then reworked into its own release. It is a stand out from the series in that it shows Alice as emotional, vulnerable, and unsure of herself. This is not the Alice that we’ve come to know throughout the course of the Gailsone series, and the sharp contrast to her carefree, confident, and focused demeanor is a bit jarring. Here, Alice seriously questions what she is doing and the choices she’s made. Impulsively (as she is wont to do), she makes a choice to try to fix things, but doesn’t consider the results of her actions until it’s a bit too late to back peddle.
Hit is a free add-on to the Gailsone universe that is hosted at www.gailsone.com.
Casey Glanders has been writing professionally for over a decade as a ghost writer and corporate author. He has published technical manuals, trade articles, westerns, horror stories, science fiction, romance and a host of other genres. This is his first full-length novel to be released under his own name.
Casey holds a MA in Organizational Communications with dual bachelors in Sociology and Communication Studies. When not writing, he earns a living as a corporate trainer for a GPS Solutions firm and as a Communications instructor for Ivy Tech University. He is a father of four and when not working, can be found with his family.
This was my original ending to Black Days. It calls on text and events directly from the novella, which you should really read. It was one of the better stories from that arc, and it was recently free on Kindle. This ending, while more involved and a bit more…sappy? That’s a good word for it, focuses on the protagonist, Alice, as being a vulnerable and shaken character. This was in sharp contrast to what we’ve seen of her in the series so far, and as a result, my editors were a bit on the fence about this being included in the main story.
One of the things a hero’s arc needs is the moment of doubt. The self-reflection that shows they realize the consequences of their actions and makes them question what they’re doing. While not blatant, this has happened several times in the Gailsone series, but nowhere as obviously as here. I think that’s one of the main reasons it was left out.
All that aside, I like this piece. I love Dinogore, and see him as superb conic relief. If you’ve read Rare Gems, you’ll note some carry-over concerning his character, and that despite his blatant stupidity, he does take at least one point Alice tells him in this piece to heart.
Enjoy Hit. It’s free, and meant to help round out a tiny corner of the Gailsone universe. If you like it, please leave a review here. It’s not offered on Kindle, so this is the only place it will generate any traffic.
