Turnabout

Gailsone: Turnabout is a free side story in the Rare Gems arc. It takes place somewhere between Ifrit and Paint the Town Red.

Turnabout is a 100% character-driven story, and goes into territory that the regular series normally doesn’t. This story is a buddy-comedy piece, and focuses on Alice, Victoria, Aika, and Susan. After a heated confrontation, Alice quickly realizes that her new employer is under more pressure than she thought. Thanks to some quick thinking from Susan and a change of venue, our cast has their first documented girl’s night. As Alice is not what most would call “social”, the conversation quickly turns to the awkward and inappropriate.

This was first considered as part of a larger story, but then pulled. It has a different vibe to it than the rest of the Gailsone series, and felt like a rough fit as part of the regular series. It’s fun, and raunchy, and slightly out of character, and that was the source of the pushback on this piece. The characters voices are spot-on, but the situations are a little outlandish, even for a Gailsone story. Still, it’s a fun and self-contained romp, and lends to some fun character background.

The biggest takeaway from this (aside from Alice’s horrible private life), is Victoria. While established, her relationship with Alice is shown to be friendlier than what is normally portrayed, and this piece shows that she and Alice have more in common than either of them thought. Plus, we get more dialogue from Aika in one moment than we’ve heard for the last 12 books, which is striking to the point that the other cast members notice.

Turnabout is a free add-on to the Gailsone universe that is hosted at www.gailsone.com.

Turnabout is a free story written for the Gailsone.com site. It is a buddy comedy-esque story. And it’s free. Free is good.

This was written as a stand-alone freebie, and was originally done shortly after Red Rook, but it felt out of place at the time. If released then, several key elements noted in the story would have seemed off, or weird, and some things that were added wouldn’t have had time to slip in. As it is, I see it as a fun piece, and that’s exactly what I wanted it to be.

I won’t lie, this is the raunchiest Gailsone story on file. It puts our characters in an unlikely situation with a conversation that is, at the very least, awkward. Also, the subject matter is extremely risqué, but still, it was written to be a fun side piece. In fact, it was going to be an insert in another story, but then was pulled for flow purposes.

This conversation was reworked multiple times, especially Alice’s bits. The goal was to convey the adult nature of the conversation without going into strict adults-only territory. Not sure if it 100% worked, but that can be forgiven in a free story.

Also, this is the first Gailsone piece without a fight scene. Ever. Normally, someone would be stabbed, or a giant monster would advance on the city, or there would be an explosion. Instead, we have a dinner and four women letting off steam. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it’s not the norm for this series, and that also led me to not want to release it for cash.

Like it or hate it, it was fun to write. If you enjoy it, then it fits somewhere around Paint the Town Red. If it’s not something you prefer, then pretend it’s a fanfic and leave it at that. Either way, it lends some color to the Gailsone universe without having to drastically alter anything, and that’s always fun in a side story.
