This is super exciting. I’m the first person to read and review this book on Goodreads. I actually had to ask the Goodreads librarians to add it! Who knew that was a thing?
Saskia Beudel decided to ride the Three Peaks challenge in her late fifties. This is a ride that is described as Australia’s most demanding one day cycling event and that my 15yo son wants to do one day. But it makes me emotional just thinking about it. Three massive peaks, plus three massive descents, plus lots and lots of kilometers in between. All with a time limit, and you don’t get your event jersey unless you finish. I’m a cyclist. But mostly on the flat bayside roads from Yarraville to Altona. Three Peaks seems so far beyond me as to actually be impossible. But if a woman ten years old than me can do it…
Anyway, this book is part memoir, part musings about the history and joy of bike riding. While I found it very interesting, I wanted more of how the author managed to do it. More specific training details, though that would probably bore the non-cyclists. And more about how she found the time for all the training while working and raising a teenager. With hills so far from my house, it feels like something I couldn’t even contemplate before retirement. And even then, it still feels so far beyond me as to be impossible.
Congratulations to Saskia Beudel on a remarkable achievement and a great book.
