Am I Even Seeing Myself? by Rosie Comfort is a compelling poetry collection that traces the layered experience of small-town girlhood. These poems create space for both your inner child and your present self to feel understood and recognized.
Rosie explores the defining moments that shape identity, blending early 2000s nostalgia with dark humor. The result is a collection that captures the experience of growing up in a place that feels invisible, where you too felt unseen by yourself and others.
Am I Even Seeing Myself? makes a meaningful gift for any woman ready to step out of shrinking, both literally and figuratively and begin taking up space on her own terms. With themes of family, femininity, and self-worth, this collection is a reminder that you were never invisible, you just hadn’t learned how to really see yourself yet.
Rosie Comfort’s debut poetry collection, Am I Even Seeing Myself?, was something I was looking forward to, and I'm so glad to be able to read it now! It's her memoir about navigating body image, invisibility, and self-acceptance.
Rosie writes about her journey from growing up as a middle daughter on a farm in Washington, wrestling with disordered eating, and religious perfectionism. Her poems on societal beauty standards are what I love the most.
She has incredible honesty, and her work holds up a mirror to the internal struggles that I face. Her compassionate reminders help me see that I am far more than my reflections.
My favourite poems of hers include:
My Dream - because her dream is also my dream! Invisible Achievements - because I have been in her shoes. Job Hunting - so relatable. Spoiled Cherries - so relatable. I Think We Want to be Blind Catcall The What Were You Wearing Life Hack Too - this hits me in the gut. Propaganda I Fell For - YES. YES. I Pray - I have prayed this... just in a few different words. Dieting Counting Angels - SO sweet! Victoria's Secret - scandalous and sexy and I love it! Church Camp One Rep Max The Tightrope Dirty - Rosie used the word antimacassar! It's one of my favourite words! The Church Pew - I loved this! The Most Beautiful Woman I've Ever Known Freedom The Meaning of Life Seen Funny Farm - this is hilariously cute, what with the rhyme. Thankful The Kindest Man I've Ever Known Good - I felt this. Playing Dolls A Little Princess Girls Just Wanna Have Fun? The Day I Said No Old Friends - so beautiful. Homesick
I highly recommend you reading her memoir, especially if you're a young woman and a middle daughter. Congratulations, dear Rosie!
Rosie does a phenomenal job rekindling the joy that is girlhood while acknowledging the pain of being a child and growing into a woman. She uses very thoughtful, creative ways to bring you into her life while reminding you of yours. You truly see yourself, for better or worse, yet you are comforted either way. I loved the way it showed how middle children are overlooked by refusing to allow them to be overlooked in this poetic journey. My favorites were: Same me Cheerleader Younger Ballad from the middle of nowhere Spoiled cherries The tight rope Too Does your mom know Floating Judas The door of return
I LOVED this book! Rosie’s poetry has always drawn me in online because of the way she words her experiences in ways I never would have thought of (rhododendron rendezvous is one of my favorite poems of hers). This collection truly covers an arc of her experience discovering herself through the lens of others up until she can finally see herself the way she wants to be, and I feel like these words aren’t even doing it justice. This is the kind of poetry collection I’ll keep coming back to to discover more, exactly what I love a collection of poetry to be.
Rosie does a BEYOND amazing job of truly bringing you into her poetry- whether you’re a poetry lover, seldom read poetry, or have never done so, there’s a poem (or multiple) for everyone. Some of my (many) favorite poems are:
