Over at DarlingAxe.com, I'm a senior editor and the co-author of Immersion & Emotion: The Two Pillars of Storytelling. When I'm not writing or editing, I'm probably running through the forest with my dog.
I started my undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria in both creative and professional writing. However, after the first year I decided I needed more life experience before I could begin writing fiction in earnest. Ten years later, I finally started my first full-length work, and soon I had three (unpublishable) manuscripts, which taught me that I still had much to learn.
In 2010, I left my job at the University of Victoria Libraries to travel and work on my writing portfolio as part of my application to the UBC Creative Writing MFA. I hitchhiked from Vancouver to Montreal, housesat in Bocas del Toro, Panama, and crewed on sailboats from Panama to Samoa. Three years later, my application was accepted, and I completed the program in 2016.
Along the way, I've written a number of manuscripts. Two were represented by an agent, and though we got close with a few publishers, there were ultimately no bites. We (amicably) parted ways in 2022 and, since then, I've been immersed in another round of deep revision. The road to publication, as I've learned, can be a long one!

Lived this. Was given an ARC of the first book We've Come for Your Eggs, I enjoyed it so much I had to get the,second book. This book was even better.

I read the first of these books, We've Come for Your Eggs, last year, and quite enjoyed it. So when the author asked if I'd be interested in an ARC (advance reader copy) of the second one, I jumped at it.
The second installment finds our ingenuous little blue dragon, Glimm, still helping his wizard boss attempt to fulfill his ambition to rule Frostvale, a fantasy version of Canada. Glimm's still the same good-hearted little guy, if somewhat less naive (and not as small) after his experiences of in the first book. He's been learning and growing, in both literal and figurative ways.
If you enjoyed the first book, you'll love the second just as much. If you haven't yet read either of them, what are you waiting for? They're comedic, satirical fantasies with an utterly charming main character, and an excellent way to spend an lazy summer (or autumn, or winter, or spring) afternoon.
The satire to my eye doesn't feel quite as light-hearted as it did the first time around (I suspect the author's rage over - gestures broadly - *all of this* is growing, just as it is for so many of us. The stakes are higher this time, and the adversaries are darker, and there's a strong "recognizing you're in a toxic relationship" subtext, but overall the story remains entertaining and amusing.
My fiancee has heard me cackling over both of these books, so now I'm reading them aloud to her, and we're about 2/3 of the way through this second story. She's loving them just as much as I did, and "Can't wait to find out what's happening with our little dragon" each evening. And really, what higher praise is there for a book and its main character?

I'm a sucker for a good snarky, brave little dragon and Glimm certainly satisfies that obsession. This second half of the adventure was even more enchanting and delightful than the first. Our hero grows into a formidable magical might worthy of tavern tales. Go, Glimm! Go!

Loved book one, and this was even better.
It's darker. The satire is more pointed. The gloves are off.
So many great references to political nonsense of the last few years! I never expected to find political humour so well tied up with a fun fantasy story.
