I walk up the steps into the marble hall. I’m in a beautiful dress, a fake smile fixed on my face. The ceremony will start soon. I’m pretending everything is fine.
I think back to how it started. The handsome stranger I met one night, charming and vulnerable, his brown eyes fixed on me like they saw right through me.
I know now that our meeting was no coincidence. But I could never have dreamed how far he would go, and how powerless I would be to stop him.
So I will get through today. The vows, the photos, the cake.
And then I will do what I must to protect my family…
A completely addictive psychological thriller about family, revenge, and how far people will go to protect the ones they love. From the bestselling author of The Dinner Guest, The Handsome Stranger is perfect for fans of T.M. Logan, Shari Lapena and Lisa Jewell.
B.P. Walter is the Sunday Times bestselling author of psychological thrillers, including The Dinner Guest, Hold Your Breath, The Garden Party and The Winter Visitor. He also writes scarier books under the names SG Hartnell and Barnaby Walter. His most recent novel is The New Boyfriend.
The New Boyfriend was such an addictive psychological thriller on audio. It starts quite gently with some really strong character development around Serena, her son Art and their complicated relationship, before everything slowly starts to unravel after Serena brings home a mysterious stranger one wet, blustery night.
Paul quickly becomes far more than just someone needing shelter for the evening. Charming, handsome and difficult to fully read, he gradually works his way into Serena and Art’s lives in ways neither of them expected. I really liked how the story built tension steadily rather than rushing straight into twists, because it made the later reveals land even harder.
And the twists genuinely were unexpected. There were several moments where I had to stop and rethink everything I thought I understood about the characters, but I do not want to spoil any of it because the surprises are part of what makes this such a fun thriller.
The audiobook narration added an extra layer of immersion and believability to the story too. The narrator captured the uncertainty, tension and shifting dynamics between the characters really naturally, which made it very easy to get pulled into the drama.
The pacing, character development, and all the twists and turns kept me engaged throughout The New Boyfriend. The concept of inviting strangers into your home and everyday life felt a little unrealistic to me. The audiobook narrators did a fantastic job bringing the story and characters to life. I just wish the final reveal and ending had landed with a bit more impact, as it felt similar to other thrillers I’ve read. Overall, 4.25/5.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the ARC.
I both read and listened to the audiobook of the new boyfriend. Audiobook was great! The narrators were really easy to listen to and kept me hooked into the story! Felt the audiobook made me hate Paul even more than me reading it myself! So many twists throughout. Stranger danger is very real in this story
