A short prequel to Dorothy Koomson's new bestselling novel That Girl From NowhereIn That Girl From Nowhere, Clemency Smittson leaves behind her old life in Leeds to move to Brighton in search of answers to her past, and to escape from the sadness of her present. Clemency’s mother, Heather Smittson, loves her with a fierce protectiveness that means she’ll follow her daughter to the ends of the Earth. . . From There to Here is the story of their journey from the north of England to the south.
Hello, my name's Dorothy Koomson and I'll try to make this bit that's all about me as interesting as possible. I wrote my first novel called There's A Thin Line Between Love And Hate when I was 13. I used to write a chapter every night then pass it around to my fellow convent school pupils every morning, and they seemed to love it.
I grew up in London and then grew up again in Leeds when I went to university. I eventually returned to London to study for my masters degree and stayed put for the following years. I took up various temping jobs and eventually got my big break writing, editing and subbing for various women's magazines and national papers.
Fiction and storytelling were still a HUGE passion of mine and I continued to write short stories and novels every spare moment that I got. In 2001 I had the idea for The Cupid Effect and my career as a published novelist began. And it's been fantastic. In 2006, third novel, My Best Friend's Girl was published. It was incredibly successful - selling nearly 90,000 copies within its first few weeks on sale. Six weeks later, it was selected for the Richard & Judy Summer Reads Book Club and the book went on to sell over 500,000 copies. Oh, there I go again, this is meant to be about me, not my novels.
Okay, back to me. I recently spent two years living in Sydney Australia, and now I'm back in England. But I can't say for how long I'll be in the UK for because I've been well and truly bitten by the travel bug
“Like with most things, he manage to change my mind, persuaded me to have an engagement party even though I know what would happen. And after it did happen, I often wondered if it was the cause of the first fracture in the previously unbreakable chain that linked us together.” - Clemency Smittson (Smitty)
I downloaded this Dorothy Koomson short for free from the Kindle store after seeing a few of my Goodreads and Instagram friends raving about her. I had written her off as an author I would not enjoy far beforehand, but thought I'd see whether this was the case by reading From There to Here. The prose style was okay, and there is a little depth and intrigue to it, but it did not wow me in the slightest, and I'm not sure I would have the patience to read an entire novel written in this plodding way. The dialogue between characters was dull and unrealistic. I did not feel invested whatsoever in any of Koomson's characters, and have no interest in knowing what happens to them in the novel proper. Not for me.
This is a prequel short story .. I keep seeing books by this Author, but have not purchased any yet .. Seeing this prequel chapter on kindle, I decided to give her writing style a go .. I am definately interested in reading the full novel of this story ..
Completely engrossing short story prequel to That Girl From Nowhere. Be warned that it is super-short and ends at 50% - just when I was getting into it! Am now off to buy That Girl From Nowhere!
This was a ridiculously short read that I read as I was worried I wasn't going to finish the book I'd already chosen as my 'Black Author' prompt for Feb!
Although this was so short I really enjoyed it & it's definitely made me want to read the sequel.
It was an enjoyable short prequel, though it didn't add anything to the main story. This is an interesting read for people who are about to start the actual book, 'That Girl From Nowhere', but for those who have already read it, it's no must read. If I was to rate this 'book' only by its short story, I would give it a 2 out of 5 stars. But the Q&A this also includes it's a big 5 stars. I'm a huge Dorothy Koomson fan and I'll probably read everything she writes and publishes until the end of my days. After reading 10 of her works (11, if we're counting this one) I'm sure having a conversation with her would be one of the best experiences of my life.
This was a brilliant prequel to the new book 'That Girl From Nowhere.' I cannot wait to read this now! I really do like the short ebooks from Dorothy Koomson. I have only read 1 of Dorothy's books and it was BRILLIANT (The Ice-Cream Girls) so I'm really looking forward to reading more from her.
I have only ever read one Dorothy Koomson book previously and I loved it, so when I saw this was free, I had to read it! A very enjoyable prequel and I’m now looking forward to reading the rest of the book.
This was a fantastic prequel got me gripped from the of. It's brilliantly written like all of Dorothy Koomson books. Looking forward to sinking my teeth into the book now.
