i went in with low expectations and was still disappointed. i really tried to have fun with it, too.
this entire novella was a juxtaposition of extremely juvenile characters/behavior and spice. the characters felt like young teenagers (they’re supposed to be 21).
the story in general was poorly executed, regardless of length.
it was… not good.
what to expect:
• camp counselors
• virgin/inexperienced FMC
• proud Eagle Scout MMC (this story makes a very big deal over the eagle scout badges he’s earned lol)
• simple writing
• they’ve known each other for 8 years, because of camp
• quirky + outgoing FMC, grumpy + reserved MMC
• short (77 pages, according to kindle)

I’m concerned for the kids at this camp.
Margot and Dean are supposed to be camp counselors, but they’re so juvenile and awkward - and not in a cute way. Something was just off about them, my guess is they were written as nerds, but they come across as kids instead. I felt weird reading their sex scene, like I was bearing witness to something that shouldn’t have happened or something that should’ve been kept private. The writing didn’t do this justice one bit.
I can’t decide who’s worse between the two. At first I was like Margot deserves better. Now I think maybe they deserve each other since they want each other so much
I’m glad this wasn’t my first Bailey book. I would’ve been a bit discouraged to try the others 😭 this is definitely not a good place to start.

The book starts off with our fmc, Margot, whining about liking the mmc, Dean, and how she wishes he would see her as a potential love interest.
She first tries to approach this wear lipstick…✨life altering✨ not.
Her best friend encourages her to flat off tell him she likes him even though she’s been borderline tormenting him their whole camp life. I should mention they are 21, mainly because I was convinced the whole time that they were 15.
So, she then resorts to nearly forcing him to kiss her and he is still convinced it’s a prank. I mean, fair, but they are both idiots.
Then, Dean figures out Margot been trying to tell him she “likes” him since they were 13.For all I know they are still 13.
Margot and her best friend, Isabel call the bathroom “the serenity bunk”. I quote Isabel, ”It’s where a unicorn goes to be alone. Or not be disturbed. Kind of a neutral zone.”
Now here comes the “like” confession. Prepare yourself, it’s spectacular.
”You’re not a catastrophe. You . . .”
He shakes his head slowly and pulls me closer, brushing his lips against my forehead. “You’re the heart and soul of this place. For me, you’ve always been that. You are the summer, Margot. You are this entire season.”
My stomach flies up into my mouth. “Wait. D-does that . . . mean you like me?”
“I more than like you.”
“I more than like you too,” I whisper back, my voice trembling.
“I know.” Regret clashes with the adoration in his eyes. “You were trying to tell me. I’m not sure I deserve you after being too dense to figure it all out. The frog, the snakebite, the trees . . . the countless other stunts you pulled. All of them had meaning. A purpose.”
I tried telling you.
They are really into Eagle Scouts Badges + the sash. And yes, I mean it in the way you are thinking.
And no, I won’t be breaking down the spice for you but imagine your worst read scene and times it by 10.
Here’s another quote. For context, she tripped.
”Margot.” He comes forward, examining me. “Did you fall?” Oh yeah. I fell. I fell hard. This thing between us is really happening. Right?”
The badges…again. This time featuring ✨crying✨

2.5 stars. Well! It’s a story.
It’s a quick little summer romance, so it serves its purpose I think.
But the characters just feel younger than they are, which sort of brings down the vibe, because there’s not a ton of emotional depth.
The “I love you” after dating for all of 30 seconds really solidified that for me.
But like, it’s under 80 pages and it’s giving summer, and it’s not offensively bad or upsetting so I think we’re okay.
It’s a quick little summer romance, so it serves its purpose I think.

A very short novella about an eight‑year mutual crush finally blooming into something more. Margot not only gets the skilled hands of Dean on her body, but also discovers he’s a dab hand with a sewing machine 😄. Good times.

i HATE HATE HATE this book
for such a inoffensive book it managed to make me so mad
they are supposedly 21 yet act 13 the mmc is annoying and immature the fmc is annoying and cries at everything also like why was she courting him like a middle school girl to her first crush with glittery rock with her initials in glittery hearts
the writing is so corny its insane i rolled my eyes so hard while reading that my head started to hurt. this book has caused me genuinely psychological problems
at one point he thinks she only likes him cause of camp insanity (getting crushes on fellow counselors cause there are no other options) BUT MIND YOU she confessed to him the FIRST day of camp it made no fucking sense for him to think that like how stupid is he (or should i say the writer for writing this) i feel offended that she thought this would slide as a plot point like does she think we are stupid?
the smut was just awful it actually made me shiver from how repulsing it was in one scene she walks out of the bathroom in only his sash with badges and they start having sex in it and he keeps mentioning how sexy it is that she is wearing his sash bro is so turned on by the concept of his sash UNINVOLVE ME LEAVE ME OUT OF THIS
also this entire plot is just miscommunication like this book couldve been 2 pages long if the mmc just wasnt so fucking stupid i shouldnt have written this review cause im getting mad all over again this book was such a waste of time
and of course this stupid fucking book ends in the mmc finally facing his grief for the first time by using his mothers sewing machine to make the fmc a stupid fucking sash and even dumber patches that she did not actually earn (talk about a nepo counselor) as if this book couldnt get any cornier

IDK this felt strangely cringey, eye-rollworthy, and juvenile, but the smut was so wildly adult that I felt almost creepy listening to this one. He's supposed to be this walking green flag and she's this misunderstood walking "catastrophe" and there's a years-long miscommunication that we brush past fairly easily. I really wanted to like it, but these characters are insufferable and the dialogue is so inherently *teenager* that it's hard to believe these are early 20's humans in charge of other, smaller humans for three weeks and one of them actually runs this whole camp. Also, who compares nervous, crying breathing to a lamaze class?? No 21-year-old that I know would have chosen that comparison hahaha. The sash and badge bit was cure, but this was not it.

I rounded up to 4 stars. Novella's always leave me feeling meh. The stories are cute and a fun read but for me (no fault of the author) there's never enough to the story. If cute novellas are your thing, then you'll enjoy this one!

this just wasn't it for me. for someone that's been in love with someone since they were 13, you sure do treat her poorly. 🥲 yikes.

Reading the whole Amazon Summer Collection so you don't have to, and trust me, I am probably saving you.
This was...so bad.
Tessa Bailey has never really been the author for me but I thought, hey this is just a short novella, I'll give it a chance. Yeah, this will absolutely be my last by her.
I have never felt so icky reading a book before. I thought the premise sounded cute, rival summer camp counselors, it's super nostaligic and cute for summer. If the FMC and MMC could've been written any more mature it would've worked, but it felt like I was reading about children with how immature they were. Her wearing lipstick to try to drop a hint that she likes him? That is genuinely some middle school bs. Which cool whatever if this was supposed to be a story about younger characters, but with the amount of spice in just 77 pages, it was so gross and felt so weird to read. And I loathe the 'virginity' trope in books. Just all around so bad and not for me.
On to the next one with little not no expectations. :)

I clowned myself into ready another novella. Am I to believe this dude funds his life off 3 weeks of summer camp and that when it’s not camp time, he’s just chilling in the woods alone? This felt very juvenile aside from all the dirty talk and licking. Also, I expected more s’mores.

Tessa Bailey delivers another seriously fun, high-energy romance that is hard to put down. The chemistry between the main characters is instant and absolutely scorching, packed with her signature quick-witted banter and plenty of sweet, campy charm. It’s the perfect blend of cozy vibes and intense spice.
The pacing keeps you hooked from the very first page, making it an incredibly fast, entertaining read. The only reason it’s a strong 4-star instead of a 3-star (which means awesome!) is that a few plot points felt a bit rushed toward the end. Overall, it’s a fantastic, feel-good romance that delivers exactly what you want from a Tessa Bailey book. Highly recommend if you're looking for a fun, spicy escape!

This was a seriously cute short story. I loved my 8 summers at sleepaway camp. (Shout out Camp Louise) a story about your camp crush of 8 summers finally happening??? Sign me up.
Margot Berry is 21 and a senior counselor at Camp and a college student. Her crush Dean owns the camp now after being in his family for a few generations. My only confusion was why the summer camp session was only 3 weeks and 100 campers. Surely she meant 6-8 weeks, right?? Tessa Bailey got me in the summer camp feels with arts and crafts, color games and rivalry between girls and boys. And the campfire songs and s'mores. The pranks were not necessarily just juvenile, but there were good intentions there. We don't learn a lot about Margot's back story or family, just that she loves singing and theater.
And Dean is a literal boy scout. Consent was very sexy in this short story. It may seem like you can't see 2 characters in love within 77 pages, but the characters have known each other since they were 13 years old.

This might be one of my least favorite Tessa Bailey stories ever. I wasn't interested in the characters, the plot or the summer camp pranks. It was just an okay list, the only thing I really liked was the setting and how short it was. A miss for me.
