Sometimes you find a book so special that when you turn the final page, you hug it to your chest and just feel. No words. No thoughts. Just feeling.

This is one of those books.

*Thank you Dark Horse Manhwa for the Edelweiss DRC*

Purgatory Funeral Cakes is becoming one of my favorite graphic novel series. It isn't a high stakes sort of Manhwa. It is more like a cozy, healing fiction collection of stories that takes place in a world where paranormal/mythical/godlike creatures reside.

This volume was broken into two parts: the first part was a story about Sol'i, a young mer-person who just wants to sing and create music with impact. Despite being a talented and amazing performer and writer, she deals with everyday prejudice that leads to a physical altercation. Instead of having this moment define who she is, she decides to put her energy into healing and being the star she was meant to be. The second story is about ChaCha (a humanoid cat) and his "grandma," and how they create a bubble contraption through science and magic. This story really focuses on dreams and wishes and how it's important to remember that a dream shouldn't be the thing that defines your existence. Whether it is a dream fulfilled or failed, the journey towards that dream is what makes it important and valuable.

This book is soft yet soul gutting. It truly captures the essence of grief, loss, and sorrow, while highlighting the beauty of a life lived.

Do you want beautiful exploration of grief and death? If yes, you should read this series. The art is beautiful and the stories are lovely. The last one had me absolutely bawling. This held two stories. The first about a person that could live in water and land with fish gills that made music with others and brought joy to them. The second was about a kid that dreams of being an astronaut and meets a kind former magician and they become friends.

I would recommend this for anyone affected by loss which who hasn’t. It’s just amazing and graceful. It makes me miss people but also want to share what they meant to me.

edit- I was really tired when I wrote this so fixed a few errors.
