CJ is determined to get Olivia back and gain her trust again. I liked CJ. While he initially didn't do the right thing by Olivia, he tried his best to make up for it. Instead of hiding things from her, he was open and honest and kept her in the loop with everything that was going on.
Olivia, on the other hand, was frustrating at times. She flip-flops between wanting CJ and trying to push him away. At one point she admits she loves him, yet still continues to keep him at arm's length. Other than that, she was a good character. She was feisty and hard working; not only is she a veterinarian, but she's also the county coroner.
There was one scene with Olivia's ex, Brian, that felt like it was thrown in for extra drama. Considering all the back and forth Olivia was doing regarding her feelings, and the other storylines that were playing out, it seemed like it wasn't really necessary to throw that into the mix. Other than that, the story was enjoyable.
The secondary characters are quirky and entertaining, and I really liked Fluffy, who later became Fang when CJ renamed him.
This is the second book in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I did not read book one but had no problem following along with all the characters. I do think, however, that it would probably be best if you start at book one, because at first it felt like I was missing something about CJ's and Olivia's initial relationship.
I'd recommend giving it a try.
