What does Dr. Olivia Alvarado— full-time vet and part-time coroner for Port Serenity, Texas—do when she discovers that the man she loves is married? She doesn’t often give her heart away, and this time she did it in spades. Talk about being annoyed—big time! How dare the scoundrel sweep her off her feet when he already has a wife. Sheriff C.J. Baker has discovered the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished. Back when he was a narcotics cop, he married Selena to get her away from the clutches of a Columbian drug cartel. His relationship with Selena has always platonic, and now that he’s divorced he wants to make amends with Olivia, his fiery-tempered brunette beauty. To complicate—or perhaps facilitate—the situation, Olivia and C.J. are working together on a suspicious death case. And to make matters worse, Selena’s brother is trying to drag her back to South America. Sparks are flying between C.J. and Olivia, and life in Port Serenity is never dull, especially when mayhem and romance are involved.
As a "feel good" author Ann DeFee infuses humor into her romantic comedy, mystery, magic realism (where the surreal becomes reality), humor/satire and action/adventure stories. A multi-award winner, Ann has written twelve novels for Harlequin and an additional three for Bellastoria Press. She has won, or was a finalist in ten national and international book award contests. Believe in the Magic leads the way with a Reader’s Favorite Gold Medal, a Chanticleer Somerset Fiction Award winner and is now a Grand Prize Finalist in the Eric Hoffer Book Award. As a business woman, Ann is a managing-partner of Bellastoria Press LLP, an independent hybrid publishing company that specializes in shepherding authors through the book publishing process. On a personal note, Ann loves living in her stories (both writing and reading) and research. She lives in Williamsburg, VA, the epicenter of American history, a perfect place to be actively involved in a national organization that focuses on history, patriotism and genealogy. Her guilty pleasure is that she’s addicted to hot chocolate (regardless of the season) and she loves all things that glitter.
CJ is determined to get Olivia back and gain her trust again. I liked CJ. While he initially didn't do the right thing by Olivia, he tried his best to make up for it. Instead of hiding things from her, he was open and honest and kept her in the loop with everything that was going on.
Olivia, on the other hand, was frustrating at times. She flip-flops between wanting CJ and trying to push him away. At one point she admits she loves him, yet still continues to keep him at arm's length. Other than that, she was a good character. She was feisty and hard working; not only is she a veterinarian, but she's also the county coroner.
There was one scene with Olivia's ex, Brian, that felt like it was thrown in for extra drama. Considering all the back and forth Olivia was doing regarding her feelings, and the other storylines that were playing out, it seemed like it wasn't really necessary to throw that into the mix. Other than that, the story was enjoyable.
The secondary characters are quirky and entertaining, and I really liked Fluffy, who later became Fang when CJ renamed him.
This is the second book in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I did not read book one but had no problem following along with all the characters. I do think, however, that it would probably be best if you start at book one, because at first it felt like I was missing something about CJ's and Olivia's initial relationship.
I'd recommend giving it a try.

4 Stars! ~ After being wounded on his last undercover operation, CJ decides to permanently return to Port Serenity and he takes the job of Sheriff of the surrounding county. Months before he blew it with Livy, the part-time coroner, full time vet.; he broke her heart. Livy does her darnedest to avoid CJ, but when a couple of bodies turn up, she and CJ have to figure out who they are and what happened. Having CJ around all the time weakens Livy's resolve, esp. when he keeps on kissing her.
This is another witty, fun read. Although this story can stand on it's own, I'm glad I read A Texas State of Mind first. Many of the colourful characters reappear, and again they add charm and humour. CJ and Livy's story is one about trust and it was heartwarming to see how they both learn to open their hearts. Another delightful read!
I adore this cover!

I enjoyed this book. This was the first book I have read by this author. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, and I look forward to reading more by the author in the future. This was a funny book, and a good romance! I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
I really enjoyed reading Texas Born but better proofreading is needed. It also bothered me when nothing indicated story was changing from one scene to the next. Overall, I really do enjoy this series.
Another very funny, sexy, romance mystery by Ann DeFee. You have never seen more stubborn people than our hero and heroine in this book. Read to see who will out-stubborn who.....or will they finally get together? Highly entertaining and recommend.
