Reviewed for herding cats & burning soup.

So. This is a first for me. I saw Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook and thought it looked great. Healthy recipes and a focus on slimming down without losing awesome recipes and taste. And it's HUGE with over 350 recipes. But, for me, that's where the good bits ended. This is the first time I'm giving a cookbook a 1 star rating. There ended up being very little about this cookbook that worked for me. It was a huge disappointment especially after seeing hundreds of 5 star reviews it has received. From expensive and difficult to find ingredients to weird inclusions and lack of veggie friendliness it was a bust. It made me think of an ex friend who would fall into the category of hippy dippy earth mama who would say things and you'd just have that look on your face like say what now? This would probably be a great cookbook for her.

The Recipes/Ingredients

The cookbook is a huge promo push for the authors. They have their own product line of specially blended flours, sweet ingredients, noodles and some things I don't even know what to call. All of which you'd need to order online and are needed for a huge portion of the recipes. They do say you can make your own blends or buy alternate ingredients but they strongly point out how bad those choices are compared to their brand. (expensive too!)

There were a number of ingredients I had never heard of. I called my mother who is a baker and she'd never heard of them. Though they claim they're easy to find at all Walmart/Targets. Hrms. I doubt.

Some of the items... pressed peanut flour, integral collagen, mineral salt, whole husk psyllium flakes, mct oil, ghee.

The cookbook as a whole is very unfriendly towards vegetarianism.
Even recipes that were veggie-ish or desserts included gelatin which...not something a vegetarian can have.

There were also just some weird ingredients. I was excited about the large dessert section and their pro-dessert attitude until I looked at the recipes that included ingredients like okra, radish, black beans, spinach and gelatin. Em. No. No thanks at all.

Recipes also had very 'cutsie' names that weren't helpful in knowing what they were and for the most part the photos were of the obvious dishes while the ones that left me scratching my head were photo-less.

Ex--Breggy Fry Up, Tangy Tato Soup, Cream of Sweet Stuff Soup, Papster Thighs, etc

The Photographs
The photographs were nice enough though not numerous. Maybe 1 in 3 recipes had photos.

Things that made it special
N/A

Recipes marked to try
There are a TON of recipes. Over 350 of them. How many did I mark down to try? 5.

Yep. Five.

Of the 5 recipes I marked to try 3 would have to be altered to be veggie friendly.

Cowboy Grub
Eggroll in a Bowl
Sweetie on Steroids
Cornbread Crusted Mexican Pie
Chicken Fried Tofu

As a homeschool mom who needs to get a little healthier and lose some weight while I'm at it, I was so excited to review this cookbook. I was much more disappointed once I got into it. While there are great looking recipes, so very many call for their specialty ingredients. While there is a section in the front of substitutions, some clearly state that you're not going to get as good a result without using their special blend/ingredient. I can't afford pricey specialty items for everyday dishes, and there were so MANY of them, so this cookbook turned into a great disappointment for me.

I received a copy of this book through the Blogging for Books program for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Love this book,! so many great recipes, and an excellent way to eat healthy.

If you are struggling with weight, eating healthy, and want to feel better, have more energy, and begin changing old habits; then this is the book you should be reading. This plan is so sustainable and it doesn't leave out food groups. It is the real thing. Not a diet, but a change in eating habits.

More recipes recommended by friends, mostly the crock pot and freezer meals. I found some very interesting recipes to try and can't wait to see if my family enjoys them. Again I'm not really interested in the diet plan that's in this book and their first, just the recipes.

This cookbook is a companion to the Trim Healthy Mama plan book. It is very readable and contains plenty of recipes to get you going on the plan and teach you how to use some of the foods they recommend, which can be a bit odd (collagen peptides, anyone?). Honestly, my blood work has become incredibly healthy since i started this diet, and you don’t really need to use the odd stuff.

For cookbooks I prefer lots of pictures and this has that. There is a brief explanation section in the front, but you should read their book(s) about their plan to get the most out of this. I haven't made any of the recipes yet (I don't have all the ingredients for most of them) and may alter this review after I make some.

It's nearly impossible to separate this from their plan so I'm attaching my review on their plan book below:

I thought this was different, but it's just a new name on the old low carb plan. I had hoped for balance, but what I'm seeing is artificial sweeteners and products most people don't have and have to work hard and spend a lot of money for (like xanthan gum, sunflower lecithin, agar powder, gluccie, and their special mixes). There has been so many complaints about strange ingredients that there are some recipes listed that are NSI (no special ingredients).

They want you to learn and use new lingo - which isn't new to them either. I liked a lot of their... chatty and funny narrative, but know they can be a little ... judgmental too. I remember one place where they talked about food we shouldn't eat and they referenced the old testament rules and mentioned (my summary - not a quote) that they believed God knew what He was talking about but we could decide for ourselves. I felt like eating those foods would be like challenging God - which totally ignores the passage where we're told all the food is for us and we're not bound by those rules anymore.

I joined one of the support groups on Facebook and that's when I saw how people were gagging on the "sips, struggling with eliminating enough carbs and sugar, and trying to help one another find ingredients and modify recipes. These groups are very active though and members share recipes and encourage one another. That may be the best part of this plan.

I may or may not have gotten this book and looked through it (page by page) the same day in which I got it. As soon as I opened the book, I smiled. There are not many times that I call a book "beautiful" but I just loved flipping through the pages of the THM Cookbook and looking at the recipes! It was very well done!

The THM Cookbook greatly compliments the THM Plan. I suppose it can be used without knowing the THM plan, but it definitely makes way more sense knowing THM. And, I imagine that reading this will expand your interest in the THM Plan if you haven't gotten that book.

The THM Cookbook starts off with a crash course to the THM lifestyle and the foods that help it roll. Most recipes have tips included in there. It seems very easy to follow with "S, E, and FP" symbols on each recipe--and on the index for each section. You can find the meal type you want at a glance. Plus, allergen friendly tweaks mentioned.

I've not had time to make any of the recipes yet (obviously), but I'm looking forward to trying many of them--including the Chocolate Waffles with Strawberries.

I love Pearl and Serene! They have helped me so much in my journey to get healthy....a journey that I've been struggling with for a long time! 9 weeks on this plan and I'm not only down 10 lbs, but my clothes for better and I don't feel so swollen all the time (about to bubble out of my jeans.). They love the Lord and bring it all back to Jesus. I might just be a trim healthy mama for life! Love their weekly podcasts, too. They not only help me towards better health, they encourage me to greater faith and to pursue Jesus and His Word more. If I had it my way, everyone struggling with weight management or on a mission to get healthy would read this book and adopt its concepts.

I have a lot of cookbooks but this one is definitely #1! I love how Serene and Pearl use super healthy, disease-fighting ingredients to make DELICIOUS meals! The shakes and coffee drinks alone are enough to make this book a worthwhile buy in my opinion. Follow their diet to get the best results from this book, but you can also make any recipe and enjoy the food without being completely "on plan" (as they call it). This is a diet a woman, child, or man of any age can stick to for the rest of their life!

The writing is pleasantly conversational, and the recipes are verifiably tasty!

It's a smidge out of date, given how much has changed with ingredient availability. (Hello, Covid-related supply chain interruptions!) Although, some of that is actually for the better. (It's easy to find MCT oil now, and not just through THM.)

I still don't understand the whole system... I wish there were just some easy to follow rules of thumb I could memorize and flog myself with later. But perhaps I'm just a bit dense.

The recipes are great - I would have never tried Okra but it works in the recipes and my older son who normally refuses all things veggie, ate it up without even knowing. This cookbook is geared towards those participating in the 'Trim Healthy Mama' eating plan. There are speciality blends that can be purchased to follow the recipe to a T - again it all goes to if you're doing the THM plan. I am so it works for us.

Use this ALL the time! NEVER put it back on the shelf. It sits on my cupboards ALL the time as I refer to it often. NEVER have I been so addicted to a cook book. I've memorized some recipes and take the book on vacation! LOVE it!

Excited to give this a go!

I'll write a thorough review after following and trying a few recipes. I don't like that there's no directions as far as refrigeration or pantry and for how long.

Not only have I read through this book multiple times, it has quickly become a staple cookbook in my house. While other cookbooks sit on a shelf in another room, this cookbook stays on my kitchen counter and is used multiple times a week.

I enjoyed looking at the pictures FIRST. Then, I tried a few recipes. Finally, I read the book. I know. I know. That’s out of order, but this diet will work if you work it. I stayed satisfied for the 6 months that I committed to it.

Complicated but it works if you can keep up with all the details. Also I hate that the recipes are all separate in another book, forcing me to buy a second book.

Not a fan. I was looking forward to gluten and sugar free recipes, but there's a lot of odd ingredient substitutions and the book felt like it was only used to promote their product line.

I wanted some ideas for healthy desserts.
But everything needs proprietary sweeteners and flours and more. Ugh.
