When perfume becomes poison, and desire becomes deadly...
Julia Cavendish possesses the rarest gift in the fragrance world—a nose so perfect it can deconstruct any scent to its molecular truth. But this blessing is also her curse. Trapped in a soul-crushing job creating cheap knockoffs, Julia's hypersensitive gift threatens to drive her toward the same madness that destroyed her legendary perfumer grandmother.
One devastating review of Gabriel de La Tour's latest fragrance changes everything.
When Julia's brutal honesty costs her everything, she finds herself drawn into a deadly game that began centuries ago. Gabriel—heir to a perfume empire, haunted by his own mysterious blindness to scent—needs Julia's supernatural nose to find the Blue Oud, a mythical resin that promises unimaginable power. But in the shadow-soaked markets of Marrakech and the treacherous Atlas Mountains, Julia discovers that some fragrances don't just seduce—they consume.
Ancient forces are stirring. Corporate assassins are closing in. And the intoxicating connection between Julia and Gabriel may be the very trap designed to destroy them both.

Midnight Blue genuinely shocked me with how good it was. I had previously read Love and Other Miracles and really enjoyed it, but Midnight Blue is in a league of its own.
The way Kiki Astor brings the world of perfume to life is magical. Rather than simply using it as the setting, perfume becomes part of the story itself. As someone who loves fragrance, I felt like I came away with a greater appreciation for the artistry and mystery of the olfactory world.
What I loved most was how the story kept evolving. It begins as what you expect to be a romance, but slowly transforms into an adventure filled with mystery, suspense, and unexpected twists. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, it surprised me.
I am generally not a fan of steamy romance novels, even though that is Kiki Astor’s primary genre, so I really appreciated that this book relied on chemistry and emotional tension rather than graphic scenes. I was completely invested in the romance and genuinely found myself dying to see how the relationship developed. The character arc was so well written.
One of my favorite parts of the novel was the mystical element surrounding Blue Oud. It added just the right amount of intrigue without ever feeling over-the-top or unbelievable. I found it incredibly easy to buy into the premise, which made the story even more immersive.
The ending was wonderfully done. Kiki wrapped up the main story in a satisfying way while still leaving the door slightly cracked for a second book. I would absolutely love to spend more time with these characters and see where both their relationship and future business ventures take them.
This is a beautiful blend of romance, mystery, and adventure, all wrapped in a world that feels elegant and enchanting. Without a doubt, my favorite Kiki Astor book so far.
Captivating and fascinating story that takes you into the tangled, cobblestone streets of Marrekech, exploring its ancient medina and encountering colorful characters, on the search for a rare oil or resin with mysterious and supernatural powers.
Full of atmosphere and intrigue, this thrilling story introduces the reader to the international perfume industry, including the tension between modern commerce and marketing, in corporate offices based in New York and London, and the longstanding perfume houses that have sourced precious and secretive ingredients in Europe and the Middle East for generations. I also enjoyed learning something about the folklore and mythology of the region, and how age-old curses and superstitions - including the elusive genies or “jinn” - continue to hold sway in the culture and traditions of modern day Morocco. Bravo Kiki Astor!!
Just finished Midnight Blue by Kiki Astor and wow!… what an intriguing, dark, edge-of-your-seat read.
A globe-spanning quest to Morocco and the Atlas mountains for the elusive “blue oud” believed to be the final traces of Cleopatra’s ancient perfume, said to drive men to ecstasy and inspire coups, pulls together a closed “steward” and an open “nose” in a dangerous race to protect the resin from those seeking to weaponize it for biological warfare and neurological manipulation.
Part thriller, part love story, part meditation on sacrifice and power, this book completely consumed me. If you love the energy of movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark or Mission Impossible, add this one to your reading list immediately.
Each time Kiki writes a new book, I’m completely transported into the plot.
I love Kiki Astor’s podcast and her instagram account because she manages to be both pedantic and cheeky. Her sense of humor is quick and dry. Unfortunately, I didn’t find the same in her book. It felt more like “tell and not show” instead of “show don’t tell.” The chemistry between her characters felt a little forced or at least for me, not believable. I did appreciate her descriptions of the locations and the sneak peek into a place that was new to me.
I’m not one to recap the book. Highly entertaining and interesting story line with mysticism and ancient legend intertwined. It is repetitive in its descriptions of landscape and scent. I was enjoying it until the end when I was hit with unexpected social and historical injustice in an attempt to make the main character’s family matriarch seem like a villain. Frankly, it ruined the story.
Part thriller, part romance, and enough unexpected turns to keep the reader engaged. If you want to dive into the world of international perfume trade, this is a great entree. Great summer read if your style is more mountains than beach.
This might be my favorite Kiki Astor book to date. I loved the exploration of all things olfactory. Set against magical Morocco this book will pull you in with lush details. I’d love to see these characters again in a future novel.
I get reels all the time from the author on the secrets of rich people and so on, and one of the reels mentioned this book, which thanks to kindle unlimited I had to check out. The language was so florid and rich and I loved that, as well as all the little luxurious details. The perfume science was so cool! I didn’t 100% buy the relationships between the characters/dialogue and did skim over a lot of parts.

This is a world I know nothing about, I now look at fragrance differently. Love the descriptions of different exotic locales, and exotic stories about scents. What a fabulous story!
