I enjoyed this no spice, Christian, romantic medieval fantasy. This fantasy world has so many spin off series, it’s hard to keep track of all of the names of people and places, and the timelines of events. However, though this book took a bit for me to settle into it, I was fully engaged by halfway in and couldn’t put it down.
This enemies to sweethearts romance is full of banter and a quest to rid a city of darkness that has descended once again. Both of our MCs are caged by rage and guilt. While the romance took a backseat to the fantasy aspects at times, I adored the strength of the Christian aspects and enjoyed seeing Jax and Enda being set up for their future second chance. It was also good to see Mistel and Cole through Kurtz and Zanna’s eyes. The last parts of this book were nonstop action that didn’t let up filled with sacrifice, romance, battle, and more. I’m excited to continue this series! The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 2. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I could not wait for this book to come out because I wanted to see how Kurtz's and Zanna's love story came together. I was worth the wait. I LOVE Kurtz, but I think the character growth in this story was off the charts and I couldn't help liking him more. Zanna is so relatable because she doubts her beauty just like so many of us ladies do and the fact that Kurtz gets to love her is priceless. OH, and in addition to an amazing love story, is all the mystery and investigating of the death of the King which is still ongoing. Cole and Mistel are still adorable and I love their back and forth. Then we get the hint of another romance on the horizon: Jax and Enda! I love how when you finish one of her books you have a peace about seeing a couple come together, but the anticipation of another one soon to come all with a mystery and God's grace wrapped into the story. Highly recommend this series and looking forward to the next one!
Zanna and Kurtz are more alike than they know. But with both of them wearing impenetrable armor, it seems they’re destined to hide their feelings forever.
Although the story progression was slow and steady for the first half of the book, Williamson was doing a ton of character building. At the 60% mark, I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough. I needed to know how things would be resolved.
No quick, easy wins here. But when Kurtz and Zanna finally surrender, that’s when Arman can win the battle. It’s unclear if their willingness to trust each other is what created the pathway to change, or if trusting Arman became something authentic and that paved the way to victory. So akin to how it works in our lives with our daily decisions and spiritual growth intertwined and interdependent.
I appreciate the clear spiritual themes and faith journey in Williamson’s books. That they’re always delivered cleanly without being preachy, forced, or canned is doubly amazing.
I never thought I would be so invested in the world of Er’rets when I started this series. And yet, the storyworld has captured my imagination so vividly that I will continue to devour and enjoy every Blood of Kings book that comes out!
Scoundrel of Claymore Keep threw me right back into the intrigue and politics of this world. I didn’t expect to get a book about Kurtz, but this book fleshed out his backstory so much and gave his character so much more depth, so I’m glad we did! Zanna is such a different type of character than a lot of the other FMCs I’ve read about, and I really liked and identified with her throughout this book.
I, of course, loved that I get to continue to see Cole and Mistel being as adorable as always. A lot of the scenarios at the characters found themselves in were downright hysterical in this book, and I always get a good kick out of the performances the taverns draw out of Kurtz.
This book left me with the overall impression of light and darkness and the battle that is constant in our world. No darkness can ever overcome the light. The story illustrated that so well.
I received a complimentary copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
A fictional world that unfolds over multiple books has a special quality that makes you feel like you're not just reading, but actively living the story. Jill Williamson’s latest in The King’s Spies series, Scoundrel of Claymore Keep, is the kind of novel that doesn’t just engage you; it imaginatively lifts you from your own world and deposits you directly into the heart of the story.
The narrative was even more heartwarming to me because of the pre-existing connection with the characters, like old friends finally getting their moment to shine. I fully enjoyed the rogue, Kurtz Chazir, getting his story alongside reputable Zanna. Their quick, sharp exchanges and clever remarks were a perfect contrast to the seriousness of their mission. Enemies to lovers, these two truly stretch that boundary with a frustrating lack of self-awareness that adds romantic tension to the story.
I enjoyed how Williamson slowly peeled back the layers of their compatible insecurities and unhealed wounds until everyone except them realized they were right for one another. The book is rich with intricate world-building, elaborating on details established in previous installments. To fully immerse yourself in the narrative's depth, I believe reading the saga sequentially provides the most rewarding journey. Still, any of the spin-offs can be enjoyed independently. This series is a spin-off of the overarching Blood of Kings series.
The book's rhythm and authentic depiction of its culture made for an enjoyable read. This story echoed the earlier theme of light battling darkness, as the spies aimed to dismantle a kidnapping ring and settle old scores. What truly captivated me in this story was the romance and the historical connection between the characters. And the ending was just perfect for the plot. It's incredibly satisfying to me when investing in a series offers a sense of completeness, rather than leaving an abundance of unresolved mysteries. There's a special kind of reading satisfaction when a character you've felt uncertain about ultimately achieves their redemptive arc. This latest installment is fantastic, a must-read addition to the series.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author but all my thoughts and opinions are my own.
Book 2 of the Kings Spies series did not disappoint. I love the no spice, Christian, medieval fantasy aspects of this book. 4.5 stars
Following book 1, Shadow of Ice Island, our team has a new mission. Darkness has covered the land of Barth with no explanation. Our band of traveling minstrels is back and working to discover how the darkness has returned. Kurtz, along with the heart eyed couple, a man that has a story for every road, and the woman who always challenges him are off to discover the secrets hidden in Barth. While looking for answers for the king, Kurtz is looking for the answer of who framed him for murder and why and all roads lead to Barth.
Spoilers ahead: . . . . . . . . .
I loved the plot of this story. The search for truth and the darkness reminded me a lot of Old Testament Israel. After the king banishes the darkness and outlaws evil practices, areas continue to worship and sacrifice to false Gods and rebel against a Godly king. As we uncover how the darkness has returned to the area we stumble upon great evil taking place and the team works to bring light back.
The romance of the book between Kurtz and Zanna didn’t hit for me until the second half of the book. In the beginning their banter felt much more like brother/sister than flirty. The tension felt more told on page than I saw in their interactions. I did enjoy the turn it took later in the book but the romance was a back seat for me to the rest of the book. Sometimes Kurtz felt like he was doing the right thing because he was afraid of the Watcher rather than being a changed man. Zanna showed a lot of growth in forgiving Kurtz for the betrayal of deception that resulted in her losing her position. She heard Kurtz backstory and really reflected on who he was now rather than in the past and grew to forgive and care for him.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and the growth that the main characters went through. The story of being in light to the darkness is a favorite of mine and I can’t wait for the next book!
Kurtz and Zanna are back, and better than ever! I loved the hints of romance in the previous book, but the development here kicks it up a notch. Yet, the whole story isn't focused on the romance---it's a story of freeing a city from literal darkness and learning to trust those who care about you. Kurtz's character arc was fantastic, his wit sharp, and his leadership admirable. I liked the interplay between him an Zanna. It was like watching Benedict and Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing. The worldbuilding and characterization took another level with the dialogue choices. Whereas Kurtz linguistic tics bothered me last time, they were toned down and more acceptable this time. Then, she added variations with whatever tense the people spoke. (I think it's present perfect or progressive). I also liked the additional fleshing out of Jax, Crispin, and Cortland. I felt like they had distinguishable traits that I could follow. Cole and Mistel, as always, were a sweet addition. As for villains, the femme fatale element was surprising and intriguing. I liked the spy elements, with disguises, distractions, and infiltrations. It felt like medieval spies, which fits perfectly with the series. There were definite Christian elements. Favorite Quote: "Angry women, in his experience, were like hiltless blades. Handle them too closely and you'd get cut." Content Warnings: Descriptive kisses, descriptions of a brothel, mentions of sex and child trafficking. PG-13 level violence. Spells, incantations (evil) and spiritual gifting (good).
If you want to get lost in a magical world that will make your heart pound and you find it hard to breathe, then this is the book for you. Also, if you enjoy fun, medieval stories with lots of action, romance, and a bit of fantasy. This is one of those books! This newest book in The King’s Spies series by Jill Williamson is so delightful and full of colorful images. It will leave you with the hope that light conquers darkness and evil is made evident when light touches it. It’s a magical story about relationships, young and old, friendships, and finding truth when there seems to be only darkness. As a reader, I was captivated by all the fantasy. An author who can create a wonderful world that captures your mind and takes you on a journey into the unknown is an author I will read more from. Jill Williamson is a fantastic, creative writer. Her characters come alive with passion and boldness. The dialogue makes the story move along so smoothly. This book features drama, suspense, action, medieval elegance, fantasy, overwhelming hardship, the conquering of evil, and sweet romance that will knock your socks off. I highly recommend picking up this book! It really will keep you captivated! I was given this book by the publisher, which did not influence my review in any way; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Y'all, I loved this. Adventure, espionage, fantasy, romance that's both sweet and meaningful, characters that make you laugh one moment and cry the next—it's an experience. CLAYMORE KEEP tackles two of the most tsundere characters I've met in a good long while. Hard, tactician, even cold on the outside (especially towards each other), but underneath the armor is longing, kindness, and tender hearts scarred by and scared from hurtful pasts.
On the one hand we're hunting for missing persons, taking down usurpers and dark magics, solving mysteries, and seeking justice for the oppressed and abused. But on the other hand we're carving off the festering scabs of painful pasts to shed light on lifelong lies and emotional strongholds that're no longer protecting the main characters, but isolating them.
Kurtz and Zanna are on a journey to find missing persons, but along the way they face their deepest darknesses, forced to reckon and reconcile with both themselves and each other. There's pain, but also healing. Hurt, but also hope. Mistakes, but also redemption. Fear, but also faith.
This book is a declaration that while your past might break you, it does not define you, and that true, unconditional, sacrificial love overcomes every lie we've ever been told about ourselves.
10/10 recommend for a classic fantasy that hits hard and hits home!
Scoundrel of Claymore Keep The King's Spies #2 By Jill Williamson
First thing you need to know is you must read Shadow of Ice Island before you read this book. The two books go together, and Scoundrel of Claymore Keep picks up where Shadow left off.
Kurtz Chazir, Zanna tan Quelle, Cole Tanniyn, and Mistel Wepp are continuing to search for answers to the questions that they came across in Shadow. And Kurtz is looking for the woman responsible for putting him Ice Island for thirteen years. He seeks justice for the woman who framed him for King Axel's murder, though some might call it vengeance, or revenge.
But when things start to go wrong Kurtz must face the truth—there's his way or the king's way. Then there is Zanna whom for some strange reason has become important to him, after viewing her as an irritant and nemesis for so long.
I love how this series has added to itself over the years. And this companion/spinoff series is an excellent addition to the Blood of Kings story world. I love the subtle and not so subtle nuisances.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.
Mystery and intrigue abound within the pages of Scoundrel of Claymore Keep. Within the first few chapters we are plunged back into the fast changing world of Er-Rets.
This time we get a look into Kurtz Chazir, the much loved and maligned character from the original Blood of Kings trilogy. I've been skeptical of his trustworthiness to say the least. Reading about his upbringing changed all that. I suddenly wanted to cheer on his redemption.
Jill Williamson does such a masterful job of building characters that are relatable and flawed, while showing us the redemptive power of Arman (God) in each of them.
By the time you get just a little over halfway through Scoundrel of Claymore Keep, you will be racing to find answers with our intrepid spies. One layer peels away to reveal another. I ate up the book and thoroughly enjoyed the tale. Well done Ms. Williamson, you keep bringing my family back for more and you do not disappoint!
I received a complimentary copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Scoundrel of Claymore Keep by Jill Williamson is a continuing fantasy novel that fights against the dangers of darkness versus light. I have not read the first book in this series or the prequel series, the Blood of Kings, by Jill Williamson, but I did read the Blood of Kings Legends series, and they captured my imagination. I enjoyed the Middle Ages feel to the stories with the knights, queens, kings, and minstrels. The plot featured a couple of characters who were in previous novels, so it was nice to see them get to tell their stories as they fight against the battles of darkness. The plot moved nicely along, and the romance moved along right with it. I like stories that show light beating darkness, so it was nice to see that in a fantasy novel. Fans of Lord of the Rings would enjoy this high fantasy style writing and plot concept.
I received a complimentary copy of Scoundrel of Claymore Keep by Jill Williamson from Sunrise Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
Kurtz and Zanna are an enemies to lovers story you do not want to miss! Forced to work together to rid the city of darkness, these two are constantly at odds, trading sharp banter, steely looks, and blood boiling tension the entire way.
After the last book, I knew I needed more time with these two, and they did not disappoint. Beneath all the arguing and teasing, you can tell they genuinely enjoy getting under each other’s skin. Add in curses, side romances (thanks Mistel and Cole), suspense, revenge, and side missions, and this became such a page turner!
This was a great read. The start was a little slow for me, but around the 30% mark I was completely hooked. The fantasy and suspense really shine, while the romance feels like the perfect bonus on top.
Overall, such a fun read, and I’m already excited for the next book.
I recieved a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
Barth is once again covered in darkness, but why? And how? The king banished the darkness, but it's back? Or is it? We saw a lot of Kurtz in previous stories, but I think the character growth in this story was off the charts and I couldn't help liking him more. Zanna showed a lot of growth in forgiving Kurtz for the betrayal of deception that resulted in her losing her position. We didn't see much of Mistel and Cole, they are still adorable and their relationship seems to be rock solid, so the romance focused on other, new budding relationships. The last parts of this book were nonstop action that didn’t let up filled with sacrifice, romance, battle, and more. I’m excited to continue this series!
I read Jill Williamson’s new release Scoundrel of Claymore Keep, while recovering from covid. This story definitely fulfills fantasy’s promise: entertaining escape and intriguing characters! Even though it’s been a while since I read book 1, I easily stepped back into the story. The author engages readers who are new to the series as well. I enjoyed reading how Kurtz and Zanna’s “love to hate each other” relationship developed. Scoundrel is a story of true character transformation. It was also fun to see Toff’s role in the novel, and I look forward to reading more about him in the next book in the series. The final scenes held me captive.
Scoundrel of Claymore Keep is Kurtz and Zanna's story. Kurtz is seeking revenge on the person who framed him for murder but has to work with Zanna, whom he shares history with, as they uncover a conspiracy. I enjoyed how Kurtz and Zanna find themselves in situations that put them out of their comfort zone and learning their backstories. Scoundrel of Claymore Keep kept me turning the pages in this enemies-to-lovers Christian romantasy read featuring spies and supernatural elements. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If this is romantasy, then I want more books like it. My biggest problem with most romantasy books is that they cut corners on the worldbuilding or magic system in order to focus on the romance aspect. But Jill Williamson does not cut any corners in her novels, and I appreciate that this book can have thrilling moments with magic and sword fighting as well as sweet moments of romance.
I knew going in to this book that I was going to love this story because the previous book in the King’s Spies series started setting up the romance between Kurtz and Zanna. But I didn’t realize how much I was going to relate to Zanna. As a tall woman, I understand so much to Zanna’s feelings of being too big or too loud or too oafish. I adore her journey as she learns to not only love Kurtz but to love herself.
Kurtz also has a lot of great growth in this book, and I like that we continue to see what’s going on with other characters in the world of Er’Rets.
Since this is the second book in a sequel series of a sequel series (I know, right???), I do recommend reading the other books connected to Er’Rets, from the Blood of Kings trilogy to the Blood of Kings: Legends series (at least book one, Squire of Truth) to the first book in the King’s Spies series, Shadow of Ice Island. It is a lot to catch up on if you haven’t read any, but I promise if you are looking for well-written, no spice, Christian fantasy stories, these will not disappoint.
~Thank you to the publisher for providing an early digital copy in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.~
WHOA! Williamson has crafted an epic fantasy! I was immediately immersed into the drama. Twists and turns kept me turning the pages. These characters will linger long after turning the final page. I'm anxiously awaiting book three in this series.
Recommend to readers who enjoy young adult fantasy.
I received a complimentary copy from Sunrise Publishing and was not expected to give a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I like both Kurtz and Zanna, though I have to admit that I didn't especially like Kurtz when I first read about him in an earlier book! He has definitely changed!! As usual, there's plenty of action and intrigue in this story! I did not expect some of the things that happened at the end! Thank you to the author and her publisher for the advance e-copy of this book! All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I love a good spies story and this one is fantastic! A bit of enemies to lovers, a bit of redemption and a lot of adventure to take down the bad guys! A fun read that will have you reading just one more chapter!
I received an ARC from the publisher and all opinions are my own.
Loved loved loved everything about this one. I loved the banter. I loved the character development (as usual, it's my favorite!). The scene in the dungeon was so sweet I went back and read it again as soon as I finished it.
The development of their relationship, from grudgingly tolerant, to genuine respect, to friends and more felt so natural, without any of the weirdness that sometimes comes with those tropes. It flowed really well and the progression was handled perfectly. They were both so precious and their chemistry was on point!
Favorite quote that made me laugh out loud:
"You want me to fawn over you in public?"
"No fawning necessary. Just stand near me, say my name once or twice, and look at me like I'm not a criminal."
I enjoyed seeing more of Cole and Mistel from an outside perspective, and Toff stole the show in every scene he was in.
It was great seeing their band of spies come together and really click as a team in this one and I hope we get more of them in later books.
