Grumpy: VDMC Book 14

Rate this book
Jesse "Grumpy" Bell is a member of the Via Daemonia Motorcycle Club. After a bomb tore through Demon on the Rocks, the Via Daemonia mechanic clawed his way back from the burn ward with a prosthetic eye, a face full of hardware, and the certainty that the woman he'd finally worked up the nerve to ask out doesn't want what is left of him. A man of few words and fewer expectations, Grumpy perseveres. Given his poor history with women, he doesn't need a broken heart on top of a broken body.
Kelly Doyle has spent years pouring coffee and trading easy banter with the quiet biker who makes her heart flutter like she's a teenager instead of almost forty. The night he finally asks her out, a bomb goes off before she can make their date. Maybe the universe is trying to tell her it wasn't meant to be. Six months later, she's still carrying the guilt of being late and the weight of a warning that paints Grumpy as a man who shouldn't be trusted. When he walks back into her diner asking for a second chance, she turns him down to protect them both.
But the story Kelly was told doesn't add up, and the truth runs deeper than a missed date or a mother's lies. There's a daughter Grumpy hasn't seen in ten years, a manipulation that's cost him every relationship he's ever had, and a road trip to Texas that's about to change what he thought his life could look like. Grumpy's been alone on principle. Kelly's about to give him a reason not to be.
***
Perfect for readers who love a grumpy wounded hero who just needs the right sunshine to find his way back, a small town heroine with a heart big enough for everyone, and the fierce found family love of the VDMC series.

I would give this book many more than five stars if I could. It is gritty, very emotional, and unexpectedly inspiring too. It is a story of survival, finding the strength to keep moving forward, and second chances. It is also the story of connections made between two people, and between family, whether biological or found. For ten years, Kelly and Grumpy have been circling each other, neither admitting they have feelings that go beyond friendship for the other, and really only seeing each other at the diner when she is working. Grumpy won’t even admit that he has been secretly doing maintenance work around the small house she lives in with her mother, and as he calls it, lightly stalking her to make sure she is safe. Grumpy’s past relationships have all ended badly, but he is finally ready to make his move. He pays his bill, then kisses the stunned Kelly before asking her out. She readily agrees, but unfortunately, their first date never happens. Had she been on time, she too would’ve been caught up in the explosion at the bar. Four people were killed and Grumpy was critically injured. Kelly is the one who sits and confers with the doctors and updates everyone on Grumpy’s condition and care while the club struggles to sort through the chaos, take care of the injured and investigate what happened and who was responsible.

This book does not shy away from describing the treatment Grumpy endured or the pain and thoughts he had while going through this very difficult period. What also comes through clearly is his will to live, the depth of his feelings for Kelly and the bonds he has with the club members whom he considers to be family. Kelly’s devotion and regrets for the time wasted waiting for the other to make a move are also evident. The arrival of his very controlling and, dare I say malicious mother sets everyone on edge. Her harassment of the medical staff and her disregard for Kelly and the club members hardly endears her to anyone. Unfortunately, her actions cause Kelly to retreat and spend much less time with the man she loves, and now fears she has misjudged. For six long months, Grumpy is at the mercy of his mother’s care, lectures and gate keeping. Then he finally declares it is time for her to leave and he will continue to recover better without her.

When Kelly is informed that his mother has left, she goes to see Grumpy and asks him a few pointed questions that she has as a result of things his mother told her. She gets the answers she needs but Grumpy is now on a mission to discovery the depth and range of his mother’s manipulations, past and present. Kelly is by his side as he sets out on road trip into the past on a mission to recover a precious connection to someone he thought was lost to him. He lives up to his moniker and resists Kelly’s efforts to lessen his pain and discomfort until she gives him an ultimatum. Do things her way or she will go by herself and report back to him, and the club will back her not him. He gives into the demands because the thought of her going alone is unthinkable. Let’s just say that their road trip becomes quite the adventure and then morphs into a nightmare.

Through it all, we see the deep love and respect between Kelly and Grumpy. These two are both caretakers at heart. His need to protect is always front and centre, but she refuses to let it cause him any pain. That is her hard boundary with him and Grumpy respects and trusts her enough to give in at that point. Both had thought that the love his fellow VDMC members had found was not in the cards for them. Now they have found it, tested it and claimed it. The bonds among the club members are stronger than steel or iron. They show up for each other, support each other and show their affection through teasing and pranks. The VDMC accept Kelly, her mother and everyone else the and Grumpy care for into the fold, as on of them, and therefore under their protection. I will admit that I needed tissues while reading this book, but I also laughed and smiled at times too. I look forward to reading more books about the VDMC characters that have found a place in my heart and memory. This book has my full and heartfelt recommendation

At this point, being emotionally invested in the VDMC feels inevitable, but somehow Elise Gedicke still manages to make every new couple feel completely different. And after everything Grumpy has been through, I was so ready for this man to finally get his story and his happiness.

Grumpy absolutely broke my heart.

He has always been a quieter character, but getting inside his head made me appreciate him on an entirely different level. His physical recovery is only one part of what he's dealing with. The explosion has changed the way he sees himself, but there are also years of rejection, manipulation, and loneliness buried underneath it all. He's convinced himself that expecting nothing is easier than being disappointed again, and there was something incredibly painful about watching a man who asks for so little believe that even that might be too much.

And then there's Kelly. ❤️

I absolutely loved her.

She's warm and caring without ever feeling like she's there simply to "heal" Grumpy. She sees Jesse, not his scars, his prosthetic eye, or everything that has changed about him physically. She sees the same quiet man she's been flirting with over cups of coffee for years. I especially loved that they're both older characters, carrying real life experience, regrets, insecurities, and baggage into their relationship.

Their personalities complement each other beautifully. Grumpy is exactly what his road name suggests—quiet, reserved, and happiest without unnecessary conversation—while Kelly has this huge heart and seemingly endless capacity to make room for people. Watching that warmth slowly work its way into the life Grumpy had resigned himself to was one of my favorite parts of the book.

But what really elevated this story for me was discovering just how much Grumpy has lost over the years without fully understanding why. There is so much more behind his history with women and his estrangement from his daughter than I expected, and those revelations added another emotional layer to his character. The family aspect of this book hit me just as hard as the romance.

And Madison? I loved her. ❤️

The Texas portion of the story brought so much to the book because it wasn't simply about Grumpy finding romantic love. It was about him discovering that his life could still become something completely different from the lonely existence he'd accepted for himself.

Of course, this wouldn't be a VDMC book without the club.

Fourteen books in, these characters genuinely feel like a huge, slightly dysfunctional family, and that's one of my favorite things about this series. The way they show up for one another—sometimes with support, sometimes with humor, sometimes by refusing to let someone disappear inside their own head—is such an important part of what makes this world so addictive.

And I think that's what I loved most about Grumpy: there is so much love in this book. Romantic love, parental love, friendship, brotherhood, and found family are all woven together without taking away from Grumpy and Kelly's relationship.

Elise Gedicke gave Grumpy a story that feels completely his. Emotional, heartbreaking at times, funny at others, but ultimately incredibly comforting.

He spent so much time believing that what was left of him wouldn't be enough for someone.

Kelly never saw "what was left." She simply saw him. ❤️

I loved these two, I loved their journey, and Grumpy absolutely deserved every single piece of happiness he found.

Grumpy and Kelly’s story was a slow burn and 10 years in the making. Its just his luck when he finally asked her on a date and is waiting at the bar that is when its attacked and he suffers so much trauma. Let me tell you Elise did her homework on the healing process of burn victims and the type of injuries Grumpy had.

While healing and dealing with his manipulative mother, who by the way has ruined his life from every relationship he has tried to have and currently drove Kelly away for a bit until Grumpy has had enough and kicks his mom out and then that is when Kelly and Grumpy’s can finally start their lives and boy it may have been a slow burn but once they admit feelings and secrets come out they are both in 100%. Not a lot spiciness in this one, due to have injured he is but they made it work.

Grumpy finds out how terrible his mother is and we finally learn that she has been keeping someone very important to him away with lies. Grumpy and Kelly, let’s not forget Jackson goes on a road trip to end all road trips. With his injuries and all the stops they make it’s a great way for them to get to know each other and grow closer. However, disaster strikes in the form of a tornado. WOW what a scene Elise creates, and I just don’t know how much more Grumpy can take because he is injured again trying to save the most important people in his life. In the aftermath of the tornado and they can’t find Jackson.

Once again, VDMC comes together and storms the hospital to support their club brothers and Ol’Lady. There is slow burn romance, love him/her from afar, manipulative mothers, family reunites and natural disasters and lots of medical terms. As always this is a story of family and how this group of men came together to create suck a fantastic life with the woman and children they bring into. I do miss Steele and Jenna but Ghost is a great President. Let’s not forget that scene with Jigsaw and Maddie. OMG Elise!!

Oh, Grumpy… what a ride! 😭❤️

Elise Gedicke has absolutely nailed the grumpy, wounded hero with Jesse “Grumpy” Bell. After everything he’s been through, watching him struggle with his injuries, his confidence, and the belief that nobody could possibly want him anymore really pulled at my heartstrings. He might be a man of few words, but there’s so much going on beneath that tough exterior.

And then there’s Kelly. ❤️ She’s warm, caring, funny, and exactly the kind of woman Grumpy needs in his corner. I loved the history between them and the slow build as everything they thought they knew starts falling apart. The mystery surrounding Grumpy’s past added another layer that kept me turning the pages because I needed to know what the hell was really going on.

The daughter storyline and the trip to Texas brought even more emotion to an already emotional story, and I loved seeing Grumpy slowly realise that maybe he deserves more than the lonely life he’d convinced himself he wanted.

Of course, one of my favourite parts of the VDMC books is that found family feeling, and Grumpy delivers that in spades. There’s heartbreak, secrets, humour, healing, romance, and plenty of those moments that make you want to hug the characters and yell at them at the same time. 😂

This was such a beautiful story about looking beyond the scars, learning to trust again, and finding the people who make life worth fighting for.

Grumpy may have thought he was broken, but Kelly proves that broken doesn't mean unlovable. ❤️

Another fantastic addition to the VDMC series! 🏍️🔥

Grumpy is an amazing book! So much is going on in this story. It was interesting learning about him. His mother oh my what a bad lady. She had destroyed every relationship he had. Not a nice lady!!!
Kelly had finally accepted a date with Grumpy after many years of him asking. It’s thankful that she was running late and wasn’t in the bar when it exploded. The pain and suffering he endured was mind blowing.
The descriptions of his burns and his medical care was so realistic I felt like I was with him.
Finally he makes his mom leave. Thank goodness!! Again she’s a horrible person. Grumpy and Kelly finally talk and things between them are finally better. It was so long coming, this couple has really been thru it.
We learn about Grumpy’s daughter. A trip to Texas and a major tornado, Grumpy has more pain and suffering, he just can’t get a break! Well done Elise!!! This book packs so much in. It’s always great to catch up with the VDMC brothers!!

I was really looking forward to Grumpy’s story, especially after seeing how everything that happened in the previous book affected him. His situation was heartbreaking, considering all he had endured, and I loved seeing how his budding relationship with Kelly helped him work through his setbacks.

It was also great to see another once-hopeless situation begin to heal and find its way toward something better. There were definitely a few moments that had me on the edge of my seat, and I firmly believe Grumpy has one very tired guardian angel looking out for him after everything he’s been through!

Great story, great couple, intriguing subplots, and plenty of hints at what may be coming next. Kudos to the author for the thorough and thoughtful explanation of what someone can experience in a situation like this. It added depth and made Grumpy’s journey to healing that much more impactful.

A genuine story that tests how strong a bond a relationship between two people can have with one another. Love how Elise can bring real life issues or situations into her book that happen everyday and am sure so many out there could relate to on some level. Once again the personalities of Elise’s characters are absolutely amazing. I love a book that can have me feeling the emotions of the characters. In true fashion though within the VDMC they will having you laughing so hard right along with the characters. I truly love the VDMC series because I have been able to become part of their family as I follow along with each book. This is absolutely a must read in continuation of the series or if you haven’t started yet please do you won’t regret it.

Grumpy is book 14 in the Via Daemonia MC, Mount Grove, PA. Chapter. Grumpy just broke my heart. He has so much packed inside and it seems there's not much being dealt with. Here comes Kelly and with her comes their shared past and he's finally found someone who doesn't care about the scars or the injuries he's sustained. She's all about the man. This is a beautifully written, emotional story that completely consumed me from the start. This story is thought provoking with absolutely fantastic characters that evoke big emotions and are completely perfect for each other. This author has knocked it out of the park with Grumpy!

Jesse Grumpy Bell and Kelly have one of those stories that will sit with me for a long time. The travesties that he endured and the attention to detail this author wrote of his surgeries and healing process really opened my eyes.
Kelly is an exceptional character and I love how these two overcame their insecurities and came to be together. The situations that played out within the pages of their journey really held my attention.

This book was spectacular. Grumpy starts off with the don’t talk to me don’t touch me vibes but by the end all we se is his squishy gooey center. And Kelly is one of those women who always has room in her house at her table and of course in her heart for another one whoever it might be. We meet Madison and she is a joy. The children are typical of the club children they are each perfect in their own way. There is so much love in this book you feel like you are being hugged by the end.

Grumpy is book fourteen of the VDMC Series.

Grumpy finally takes a chance on getting some happiness in his life and then he is in an accident which puts a dent in everything. His mother was overbearing and I don't know how he put up with her for so long. She just didn't want to see him love someone other than her. Kelly was an absolute sweetheart and I was glad they were able to come together properly, as Grumpy is a softy at heart. They were perfect for each other.

What a great story, I love this author and the way she treats differently abled characters. She makes them the main characters in her books just as they are in real life and I love this! her Character don't get magically turned into not ill, or disabled just because they get a HEA in a book and this is so important to let people be represented.
I love Grumpy and Kelly, their story is a major Slow burn but so worth it....

If you like a grumpy hero and a sunshine heroine this book is for you. This thr long awaited love story of Grumpy and Kelly. These 2 have danced around each other for years but when they finally take a chance a disaster occurs. This is a journey of second chances, secrets that do not stay buried, and a manipulating mother. This story is devastatingly good and a total emotional gut-punch.

Jesse and Kelly's story absolutely wrecked me. He’s severely scarred and convinced he’s unlovable and she’s carrying years of guilt and miscommunication, but their road trip to Texas for his daughter is pure, slow-burn healing.

Grab a brew, a box of tissues, and prepare for a proper tear-jerker.

Jesse and Kelly have been dancing around each other for quite some time, he finally steps up. Wasn't a fan of his meddling mother, liked them as a couple. Looking forward to Jigsaw's story. Although the ending was a little confusing. I hope the next story clears it up

This book shows a person can overcome anything. Sometimes people let what unfortunate incidents that happen to them slow them down. This book shows that you may lose an eye but that shouldn't stop you from living your life to the fullest. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.

I really enjoyed this. It does tug at your heart strings for everything grumpy went through, but it was nice he didn't have to go through it alone. Some crazy stuff happens and now I really can't wait for the next one

Great book

I liked this book a lot. The author took a different approach to this one and used things that were more natural than bad guys and drugs as deterrents. Instead manipulative mother's and natural disasters took care of the drama. I enjoyed the normalcy of it.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. Elise Gedicke nailed it with Jesse Bell also known as Grumpy. Grumpy has been through so much and when he is injured he is struggling more. There was so many times in this book that I really felt all the pain and struggle Grumpy been and going through. Definitely a must read book.

So good as always. This was about Grumpy (Jesse). He was an auto mechanic. He went into the diner as often as he could since the day he moved to Mount Grove 10 years ago. He wouldn’t go just for the food it was mainly because Kelly was there. He really liked her but he didn’t think he was in the right place to date. So he did little things for her without her knowing. They were also neighbors. One day something big happened and he was in the hospital for a long time with major injuries. She didn’t leave his side until his mother came to town. She wanted to be there for him but didn’t want to keep his mom from seeing him. He finally had enough and told Kelly just that. Must read.
