Military sci-fi isn't normally my jam, but after picking this one up, I realize I should continue to broaden my horizons. Matt Carson introduces us to a far-future setting with Caervus Dar'vall, a Fenri (wolflike alien) navy engineer, who immediately gets pulled into a situation for which he was neither desirous nor prepared. He has to utilize all of his natural abilities, training, and wit to have any hope of making it through the series of ordeals he's forced to face.
Along the way we meet a list of memorable characters that add interest and depth to the story, several of which are bound to show up in later novels (as this appears to be the first in a series). Given that, not every story thread is as neatly tied off as it would be in a stand-alone novel, but everything was tidy enough that I was extremely pleased with the ending. Carson's depiction of action sequences, be they planet-side or in space, are top notch, and I found myself easily able to visualize everything that was going on (which is sometimes a challenge for me).
All in all, this was a fun, fast-moving read that surprised me more than once. If you're already a fan of military sci-fi, this should be a no-brainer. If you're like me and just dipping your toes in, it's a great place to start. Five stars! And I'll definitely be picking up the next one.
