Delilah Pelham’s brother, Paul, is missing. She should probably be worried about that but honestly, he's been in trouble since the day he learned the words "Trust Me". In fact, if it weren't for his roommate, Carl, she would gladly leave him to his fate.

Carl is a good guy, even if he’s a bit of a dork.

Okay, a large slice of a dork.

Possibly the entire cake.

But he wants to help, as does his merry band of geeks; which is how Deli finds herself in middle of Hong Kong with the King of the Dorks, running from creepy guys with slicked back hair and shiny black guns.

Back at home, Carl’s friends aren’t faring nearly as well. All they had to do was monitor the situation and feed Deli’s cat while she was gone. How could that possibly end in bloodshed?

There is a simple answer, of course, but no one ever thinks to ask the cat.

Tiffany grew up in the Seattle area in a time when the Super Sonics were huge and Starbucks was just a store at the end of the Market. Tragedy struck early in her life as her family moved to New Jersey mere months before Bon Jovi’s “Slippery When Wet” album hit record stores. It took nearly a decade to wean herself off the hairspray. But Seattle called her back, so she went; eventually earning a degree in Botany (pronounced “Bar tending”) at the University of Washington.

She made one more valiant attempt to leave the PNW after college by travelling around the country doing not much of value and making very stupid decisions. She is thankful every day that the internet was not a huge deal in those years. Then Seattle called again so she picked up and moved home where she spent many years being a scientist of middling talent in several labs that she absolutely did not blow up—except for that one time and everyone agreed not to talk about that any more.

Now she divides her time between writing fiction and raising two kids who are wonderful but, for some reason, won’t stop licking things.

I must admit, this book seemed to be a read that would just be enjoyable. However, the moment I opened the pages and began reading, the book completely entranced me. The way Tiffany writes her novels is beyond brilliant- her characters have flaws that are comical, and that add an interesting element to the already well-thought out story. The plot seemed generic at first, the typical "I need to rescue my idiot brother at substantial risk to myself". But, that's where the similarities ended. I enjoyed the way the author put her characters into compromising situations, and in this novel, unlike a lot of thrillers, you find yourself rooting for the underdogs, the nerds, rather than some kind of physically superior macho hero. The way the author handled the comedy and the wittiness in the series was commendable. It made for a fast-paced, enjoyable read, and I finished the book in two days.

Tiffany's favorite character of mine by far is Toesy. The way his character was created, the way the cat interacted with the humans, had me laughing out loud where I sat. And then, as the story went on, the antics the cat got into to save the "Great Man" and his other friends were engaging and addicting. Deli and Carl, the two main characters, are well-rounded and flawed, which made the reading enjoyable.

If I had to put one criticism in this review, it would be that I wasn't particularly fond of the relationship dynamic between Paul and Deli. I thought it was more of an afterthought, and even though Paul was the one they were supposed to be finding, he was very rarely mentioned until just the end of the novel. The way the author handled that relationship and the conflict at the end, though, made me smile.

I would recommend this book to everyone. And I have. It was fantastic, and I cannot wait for the next installment to come out. I will definitely be reading!

So, I've just finished this one and I've gotta say, while I was a bit skeptical through the first 20 or so pages, this one is absolutely fabulous. Not only does it keep you guessing throughout (as it should, given the title and all) but it's brimming with some of the best character's I've come across since 'Trail of the Chupacabra.'

If I had to say one thing bad about this book, my statement would follow in the form of a question: Why would you give your leading lady the nickname Deli? Her name is Delilah - so why not Dee, or Lila? Just saying that the first few chapters would have probably been a better experience overall if I weren't constantly imagining a submarine sandwich.

Even then, this title proved to be so good that I got passed the perspiration dripping, completely out of shape sub shop guy I kept picturing in my head every time the name showed up after a few dozen pages. A feat that I honestly thought would have been impossible if you'd have asked sometime during the first page or two. In fact, I was so engaged in this one, that I found myself opening it up at work.*

Bottom Line: If you love books like ‘Domestic Violets’, ‘Trail of the Chupacabra’, or the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett, I honestly think this one is worth the read. In fact, this one gets the T.T.P. satisfaction guaranteed. Yes, it’s just that good. I promise.

*And you'll just need to take my word for it when I say that the only other time I've ever been compelled to read a title during work was when I was still in the throws of the vampire mysteries that shall-not-be-named. I'm not going there right now. Really. I might not ever go there ever again. [angry]

Unusual, original, quirky .

This is a very original and quirky plot. I enjoyed it but I think it's more for the young adult audience. It ended in a quirky way also.

Really enjoyed the writing, especially in the first half or so. The author uses many amusing turns of phrase and description. My favorite character is the cat, Toesy.

Basically: Deli travels to Hong Kong with Carl, searching for her lost brother. The underlying plot has to do with computer hacking and a nano-tech invention that might be getting into the wrong hands. Meanwhile, back in the Seattle, Heather is busily trying to infiltrate, Jake has a bullet problem; and the poor cat Toesy is having some interesting adventures. While this is a complete story on its own, there's apparently more to come in the next volume.

The editing in the book is good. I found three very minor typos (which I kept track of, in case anyone wanders by looking for them).

This book blew my mind. It was the most entertaining blend of action, humor, and mystery. The main character Delilah Pelham is a modern day warrior – she is a master of bodu kura (a type of martial arts) and has no issues taking down men twice her size. She finds out her brother is missing through his “security guard” roommate Carl. Despite her dislike for Paul, she decides to search for him in Hong Kong, his last known whereabouts.

Author Tiffany Pitts has developed some awesome characters. I loved the strong and independent female protagonist. I really appreciate the depth of each character, from scientific nerds to a brilliant Maine Coon named Toesy (who I tremendously adored). It’s true; I laughed out loud, held my breath for the next page, and was completely thrilled to learn there is a second book.

This is the most incredible book I’ve read in a long time! Now I’m a sucker for crime noir. The darker, the better. Especially when its mixed with humor and sharp dialogue. This is that, and so much more! In the first page, I knew this book was a champ.

I then began to really absorb the flow of Double Blind. The book opens on our hero, Deli, (Delilah Pelham, to be exact) confronting a monster. After a symphony of structured mayhem, our protagonist easily prevails. Then the book ignites! Tiffany’s characters are complex, colorful, beautifully detailed (right down to the awesomely noir names) and she flows seamlessly from personality to personality until you feel personally involved in the story, and not just an observer. Then she drags you in even further! This amazing plot also centers around a bitchin’ 30 lb Maine Coon called Toesy, and a handful of magic robot beans. Tiffany even displays the unique writing prowess to speak from both of these characters individual viewpoints and voices (including the robobeans)! The dialogues in this book are absolutely genuine and ingenious, the twists & turns spellbinding, the tale a technological marvel, and the command of the language stunning. You’d be hard pressed to find a cooler and more imaginative plot, anywhere. I don’t even know what to say about this spectacular book! To tell any more would make me a spoiler and I want to highly encourage everyone that I encounter to read this thriller. Its that good!

TIFFANY PITTS is my new favorite author! Hands down. Can’t wait for her next one, and I see massive hugeness in her future…

Fun read! I read this one on a recommendation from a friend, but didn't immediately have time to read it. I was called on a last minute trip to Europe and grabbed it on my way out so I'd have something to read if my electronics died or the movies weren't any good during the extremely long trip across the US and Atlantic Ocean. Instead, I didn't end up watching a single movie or turning on a single electronic device (outside the requisite in-plane photo moment). Instead, I read this book while trapped on the tarmac (3 times), while taking off and landing, during turbulence (regrettable quick break to quell the airsickness), in the airport during my layover, walking to my hotel, walking to dinner, at dinner... Only to finish the book and look around and find myself alone in a European city feeling vaguely sheepish that I was more disappointed the book had ended than I was excited to be travelling. So yes, I'd say I definitely enjoyed this book. Try it, I really doubt you'll be sorry you did.

Double Blind is the first novel in the Thanatos Rising series. It's reality-based sci-fi with a strong, smart female lead, and a charmingly dorky cast of supporting characters. When a guy is introduced as unappealingly as Jake, I don't expect him to become a favorite character, but he won me over just like he did the heroine's cat (With seafood flavor). Speaking of, Toesy the immense cat is my #1 favorite and I can't wait to find out what he does in part two.

The First of (i hope! ) many books about tosey!

I love science fiction, or alternative reality, or alternate reality. This, and the following books (WizzyWig) and Parallax) follow a group of unlikely heroes through adventures that are enjoyable and fascinating.
They are classic "introduce your character, run him up a tree, throw rocks at him (or her) then get him down in fun ways" stories.
That is lots more fun with good characters! And these are the best! Carl, Deli, Jake, Kix, and of course Toesy. All 35lbs of fluffy Main Coon cat. Who can teleport (can't ALL cats? )
But these are entertaining books. As a former professional magician and entertainer, suspending my critical view of reality is easy. These books are fun! The settings are enjoyable! The characters are well done and believable. I can't help but like Carl and Jake! Inept at human interactions as they appear to be. They are heros in a different way.
I reminds these books.. and will write reviews of both soon.

This was hilarious and sketchy all in one! The secondary characters kept me more intrigued than the main characters. Jake and Toesys are a delightful duo, and them having series books is awesome! The main characters Deli and Carl are in the other Wizzy Wig stories too. Makes me wish I never have read this story because I'll never get to read anymore of these wonderful characters anytime soon!

Fun

Full of non stop wit and never ending dorky action. Makes me appreciate those who are so very intelligent and struggle socially with those who don't always understand their backwardness. Funny read!

Very entertaining. The villains were appropriately villainous, just really inept. There were laugh out loud moments. Chases. One thread of pure comic book-type fantasy. The hero (?) gets the girl. Really a lot of fun,

Quirky people on a wild ride are always fun.

Seriously, there's nothing to dislike about this story. There was action, nerdiness, and pseudoscience. This was a great read! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Funny and exciting? Yes, please.

Plus a hilarious POV cat character, tech that is believable, and a literal kick-ass female lead.

When's the movie coming out? Seriously, I want to see Toesy on screen.

Not sure how to classify this one: It's a comedy, it's a mystery, it's suspense, it's a spy story, it's a romance, and it's sci-fi - and it's a whole lot of fun! Will read the second one. Just LOVE Toesy!! 4 stars.

I ended reading this without stopping. A fun, action-packed novel with great characters. Pitts is a funny writer and this comes through without distracting from a solid plot. This will particularly appeal to Seattlites but you don't need to live in the PNW to enjoy it!

Raucous fun

Engaging characters and an over-the-top but exciting plot combined with hilarious execution made this a fun trip away from reality. Despite longing for a red pen a few times whilst reading, I'm seriously considering purchasing the next book in the series.

Largely ridiculous, and difficult to follow all the POVs, though I figured out what was going on sooner than poor Sacha, which is a rather low bar. The cat is the best character in the whole thing.

entertaining thriller

The mystery was fun and I rooted for the characters. Many of the plot points are a little convenient and nonsensical but it was entertaining.

Whew--what a ride! This book grabs you from the beginning and just doesn't let go, as you read about Deli, Carl, Jake, Toesy the cat, and Sasha being thrown into one bizarre situation after another. If you like nonstop action blended with madcap craziness and a large dollop of zany humor, then this is the book for you!

Though I enjoyed the entire book, some of my favorite parts were from Toesy's point of view. A thirty-two pound part Maine Coon cat, I laughed out loud during nearly every single one of his chapters. The names he gave people and things were especially amusing--

"the Great Man" (Jake)
This man, who knew to feed him the Seafood Flavor without any prompting, would not complain about Toesy’s extra girth, for he had extra girth himself . Toesy suspected he might be a holy man. Certainly, no regular human he ever met had been so awe-inspiring.

"Executive Wingman Steve" (the "voice" inside Toesy that I can't even begin to explain--seriously, you have to read the book to fully appreciate this one. I especially love when he gives Olympic-style grades to Toesy's feats of athleticism)

"Sock Pants" (a woman who wears pantyhose--because to Toesy, nylons appear to be "see-through sock pants"--a brilliant description, really)

"Tall Man" (Carl--for obvious reasons)

"the Angel of Delivery" (the pizza delivery girl whom Jake has a crush on--sometimes she brings a pie with "those tiny little fish" on half for Toesy)

I enjoyed the entire book, but every time a chapter or scene was from his perspective I began to read with an even greater sense of anticipation--it was going to be good, no question. His way of seeing the world is refreshingly honest, and often laugh-out-loud funny!

He makes me look at my own cats in a whole new way, actually...

I'll be honest, some of the science bits and a lot of the espionage-type drama went a bit over my head--I'm still not exactly sure what the Russian guy has to do with it all--but I was having so much fun with the rest of it that I didn't mind at all.

I was doubly happy to see there is a book two--hope it comes out soon!

Rating: 4 stars / A- (having the heroine's nickname sound like a place to buy cold cuts is a bit distracting--really, my only real complaint)

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Delilah Pelham's brother has gone missing in Hong Kong while negotiating a classified business deal. She isn't too concerned because his charming persona and shady schemes often get him into trouble. The only one worried and insistent they find him is Carl, who has a personal stake in the business and has discovered obscure messages that suggest her brother knew he was in danger before disappearing. Together they retrace his steps through Hong Kong and try to solve the clues left for them while dodging the people intent on stopping them. This is the first book in the Thanatos Rising series.

Double Blind is an amusing story that blends action and mystery with a bit of romance and science fiction. The story has an engaging narrative that remains witty and upbeat throughout the course of the book.

I liked that the story included advanced technology with interesting consequences. The enthusiasm for the science behind the technology made it a fun addition to the story without overwhelming it.

The story has two interconnected storylines that take place in different locations. Seattle and Hong Kong were wonderful backdrops to the story. The detail and focus given to the layout of each location gave a better sense of place and movement through the story. I also liked that each setting was reinforced through the chapter titles.

The characters were memorable and endearing with clever dialogue. I liked all the small characterization details that made them more dynamic. It was also fun to see the different relationships between the characters play out.

Delilah was an interesting contrast to Carl's character. I really liked how the action scenes incorporated their different capabilities and knowledge. The fight scenes were lively and well written.

The promise of a cyber-cat was the main reason I chose to read the story. As a result Toesy quickly became my favorite character. I loved the way his mindset and behaviors were portrayed. His side story with Carl's friends was engaging read and added depth to the overall story.

Double Blind is an amusing, action packed mystery with wonderful twists and revelations. I look forward to reading its forthcoming sequel.
