Political analysis can often feel dense or inaccessible. Where to From Here? does the opposite.

Tara Roos has an incredible ability to articulate thoughts I had long observed but never quite found the language for. Time and again I found myself pausing to think, “Yes… that’s exactly it.” Whether unpacking coalition politics or analysing South Africa’s political parties, the book feels less like being lectured and more like having your thinking sharpened.

What I loved most is that this is information told like a story. It’s deeply researched, balanced and objective, yet never loses the reader. Complex political ideas become clear without being oversimplified.

As we head towards another election, this feels like essential reading. Not because it tells you what to think, but because it teaches you how to think more critically about the choices before us.

Where to From Here? is sharp, timely and genuinely compelling political commentary.

Tara Roos writes about coalition government with clarity, urgency and a real understanding of the political moment South Africa finds itself in. This is not dry analysis from a distance. It feels engaged, alive and deeply concerned with what governance means when certainty has fractured and old political patterns no longer hold.

What I appreciated most is how accessible the book is without ever feeling simplistic. Roos takes a complex and often chaotic subject and makes it feel readable, relevant and necessary. She writes with a steady sense of purpose, asking not only how coalition politics works, but what it reveals about power, compromise, leadership, accountability and the future of democracy.

It is thoughtful, incisive and important, but also surprisingly readable. The kind of book that helps you understand the headlines differently, and makes you think more seriously about what comes next.

A smart, urgent and deeply relevant read. Essential for anyone trying to make sense of South Africa’s political future.

Tara Roos writes a great political analysis of current politics in South Africa. She explains each party and the workings of government is a way that is easy to understand and feels pretty fair.

The part of this book that I struggled with is the large amount of data that is used throughout the book and the analysis starts to feel repetitive on more than one occasion.

This book is well worth the read if you want an overview of current South African politics.

A good snapshot of South African politics as it stands, where it is headed and what its players need to do in order to survive or even grow in future elections. Tara Roos describes each electoral outcome and the state of the different parties quite well but those interpretations feel as if they repeat after a few chapters.
