Elizabeth, Destroyer of Worlds

Rate this book
Elizabeth Harper’s biggest crisis used to be misshelved books. Now she’s punched holes in alien spaceships, escalated an interstellar war, and become the most feared librarian in the galaxy.

She’d settle for a decent latte.

When Commander Kaelen Velthar accidentally abducts a Seattle librarian during an emergency hyperjump, he doesn’t expect his fragile cargo to outpunch his entire crew. Turns out human bone density, by galactic standards, is closer to armor than skeleton. Bad for the battlecruiser. Worse for his composure.

Then Supreme Warmaster Ash’velkathorinathktu-Zex’ley—or “Ashley,” as Elizabeth keeps calling him—decides he wants the human weapon for himself. He just needs leverage.

Unfortunately, Elizabeth is starting to have some.

Saving the galaxy is the easy part. She’s been flipping tanks since Tuesday. The seven-foot brooding alien commander she keeps wanting to kiss? Different problem entirely.

Latte first. Galaxy second.

A spicy sci-fi romcom featuring accidental abduction, alien-war chaos, found family, and one librarian with catastrophic strength.

Honestly torn about this one and how to rate it. I've read a lot of sci-fi romance, silly and serious, and for better or worse, here are my actual thoughts. The premise was different to what you usually get with this genre (sci-fi/alien romance). She's the stronger one as a human, he's a dainty pretty elf alien. I love to see that!! It was also funny which I usually also enjoy.

I felt like some of the funny moments didn't feel well-placed because of how serious the threat of the Bad Guys was meant to be. We are told as the reader that the Bad Guys are Bad!! Scary! etc. and the humor vs stakes wasn't very well-balanced in my opinion. Also I don't love when jokes rely on pop culture references to land, and there are a lot of them in here. I hoped because our FMC is a librarian, they wouldn't give me such an Ick, but alas, they did. That's a personal preference thing, and I do recognize that. I just think if you're going to lean in on funny sci-fi romance and make it all tropey/call out the tropes, it needs to land better than this did. Maybe it was just me.

Also the pacing was so weird for me. Not in the romance, that actually felt very well-paced within the story, but the overall plot pacing. There are a couple of very abrupt-feeling time jumps that honestly pulled me out of the flow of the story. Big "wait, what??" feeling jumps. And those are never my favorite.

Overall, the story just sort of feels like the authors went in with a fun idea but not a clear plan for executing the idea, whether in pace or plot or tone. They had a fun idea, and a solid romance, and that's about it. That's not a dig, just an observation.

I still think this was GOOD. I just don't think it was great, even though it definitely had the potential to be. I would still be interested enough to read the sequel the ending sets us up for, especially as I suspect it will lean a little more on that silly/absurd side, so I may even enjoy it more.

ARC read, given in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you so much to E.S. Brandon for providing me with this ARC!

First of all... I read the blurb and immediately said, "SIGN ME UP." 😭✨

I honestly don't think I'd read a book quite like this before, and that alone had me intrigued. The premise immediately pulled me in, and I'm so happy to report that it absolutely delivered.

I LOVED this book.

It has such a great balance of heartfelt romance, exciting action, and perfectly timed moments of humor that gave me little breaks before throwing me right back into the story. I found myself completely invested in the characters and genuinely excited to see where the journey would take them.

One of my favorite things about this book is how unique it felt. It never felt predictable, and it kept me wanting "just one more chapter" until I realized I'd been reading for far longer than I planned.

This is, without a doubt, a must-read in my opinion.

And on a personal note:
I want to sincerely apologize for posting this review later than intended. Life threw me a few unexpected curveballs, and I unfortunately had to step away from reading for a little while. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have read this story, and I'm so happy I can finally share just how much I loved it.

If you haven't picked this one up yet, it's available now, and I can't recommend it enough.

Thank you SO much to E.S. Brandon for allowing me to read this as an ARC! I had an absolute blast reading this. It was so well written, well done, and overall an incredibly enjoyable read.

The "space elves", the comedic moments, and the heartwarming moments shared between Elizabeth and Kaelen were just so beautiful, and I loved every second of them.

I loved how strong Elizabeth was despite everything, and that she truly didn't just fit the mold of the typical FMC heroine; she worked her way up to it, and I loved that for her. And Kaelen, definitely one of my favorite MMCs now, because while he seemed a bit hard on the outside, you immediately fall in love with him when you learn how much of a true cinnamon roll he is on the inside.

I don't want to go into spoilers, but the side characters were also incredible, and the found family dynamic is always one of my favorites. Also, it gave some slight Galaxy Quest vibes in certain moments, and I LOVED that.

5 stars all around and one of my favorite reads this year!

Thank you to E.S. Brandon and 42Fold Studio for the ARC!

Never thought sci-fi and rom-com could be a good mix, but boy did this prove me wrong.

You meet Elizabeth, a librarian who was misunderstandingly abducted by a (hot) space elf named Kaelen and his crew. From there the chaotic journey begins.
This was written so well, I appreciate that the banter was hilarious and how there were a lot of pop culture references.
The slow burn in here was slow burning its thing cause I was so satisfied reading about those two falling for each other. So I glad I took tbe chance to read this, I will definitely be applying for book 2 if there is one 👀

Thank you to Friends of 42 and the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first sci-fi/romance book and I love supporting indie authors even if it is in a genre that I’m new to. I do think some genres just don’t take themselves too seriously which I can appreciate but I never felt fully invested in the characters for that reason.

I did like the way the relationship developed with the love interest and the other side characters who were so dedicated to helping their new human friend. I also enjoyed how the typical romance tropes were reversed a bit.

I would say 2.5 ⭐️ but as someone new to the genre I may not be appreciating it enough yet.

Librarian turned World Destroyer. This had all the sarcasm I expect out of an E.S. character with a bonus of non hostile aliens.

The FMC is hilarious and just imagining everything she destroys and all she becomes is fantastic. I wish we’d gotten a little more of our MMC’s side but the tastes we got were wonderful.

And the cast of aliens characters that become the found family are adorable. I’ve never thought about how millennials added -ussy to the end of things and cackled so much.

What a fascinating premise and story!

An abducted librarian turned intergalactic space heroine! ✨️ Irreverent humor mixed in with a slow burn romance of lite enemies to lovers trope. It's a wild ride that's a slow build and ends with a bang...

I don't think I have laughed so much while reading a book. Honestly, this book was so unserious, and it was exactly what I needed. Elizabeth is great, her quips and one-liners are hilarious, the way she deals with shit is honestly breathtaking. The way the usual tropes were tossed on their head, and how we're reminded through various references, was done really well.

Until it wasn't.

The first 70% of this book I was invested, to the point that I reached out to a friend and suggested the book to her because it was that good and without a doubt both of our cups of tea. In fact, I did this not even 150 pages in.

However, the last 30% of the book dropped drastically. Things started to feel super repetative, and certain things seemed to get repeated, such as conversations that had happened more than once already, sometimes in the space of only a handful of pages (the most obvious is when the mmc asks the fmc if she'd want to go back to Earth) the same conversation happened mutlipe times close together, that ti just really started to feel dragged out.

The worst part for me had to be when they finally slept together, because we've spent the whole book being told how dangerous she is, watched her push these guys around with just a fingertip and yet, it's not something they need to walk through during intimate moments.

Also, the epilogue really lost me, and I don't want to go into much detail but, it just logically makes, no sense.

Did I have fun? Heck yes I did. Did I enjoy it, also yes, but there were just a lot of things towards the end that just really made me scratch my head and wonder where the turn happened.

Minn’s rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Plot: 3/5
World building: 3/5
Romance: 🌶️

I received an ARC from the authors in exchange for an honest review. This sci-fi romance had an interesting premise and some creative ideas: the main female character is abducted from earth and thrown into an inter-alien species conflict that spans across the universe. She is actually physically stronger than the male character and his species, so she ends up being their secret weapon to fight against the big bad bug aliens. There were parts of the story that were genuinely hilarious, but overall I felt that the endless jokes and pop culture references diluted the high stakes element of the war and conflict.

I have mixed feelings overall about this book. The pacing felt uneven, with some sections dragging while others moved too quickly. I also found it difficult to fully connect with what was going on - there would be moments of seriousness and then a pop-culture joke or reference was thrown in and the story just kind of lacked substance. While the action and concepts were engaging, I wanted more depth in the character development and a smoother narrative flow. The story is marketed as a sci-fi romance but the main characters didn’t even kiss until the 80% mark, and there is only one spicy scene in the entire book.

Overall, it's a decent read with plenty of imagination, but it didn't completely live up to its potential for me. If you enjoy ambitious sci-fi fantasy with a dash of romance and rom-com ambiance, it may still be worth checking out.

Absolutely love this sci-fi romcom!! To the cultural studies of Netflix and chill, and the simplistic support of a thumbs up. 😂 The plot was giving the best Star Trek vibes.

This story follows Elizabeth just a simple librarian who’s been taken from earth and Kaelen the commander of the ship. In what seems to be a wild miss understanding, they find the solution. A super strong human with jokes! It was such a good read, the tension between them was everything. I just didn’t know it was a slow burn. More like a 4.5 Stars ⭐️ because

I truly can’t wait to read the next one, a lot could happen. That changes it all…. (Yeeeeek) 💕

Elizabeth, Destroyer of Worlds is laugh out loud funny, action packed, and just awesome!
I usually don’t go for comedies but I wanted to give this one a try because the blurb sounded so good! And I was not disappointed! I love how they switched things up with humans and aliens! If you like aliens, romance, action, and comedy you will love this book!
I received an arc from the authors and these thoughts are my own!

Was given an arc by the author. I thought the story was good in the romance dept but I wasn't crazy about the scifi part. I do love the characters and the scifi pop cultures references. The world building with the aliens and the bad guys wasn't the greatest if you're more into scifi.

Omg I absolutely adored this book! I laughed, I gasped, and I swooned! I’ve never wanted to know a librarian more now! Elizabeth is a librarian and is accidentally abducted by an alien ship and what ensues after is fantastic. I’d like to think I’d act the same way if I was in her shoes. Yes, given the hot MMC also. (like a fae alien also described by the author as “aliens look like LOTR elves”)!!
This book had so much heart and the literary references that bring all the nostalgia! I especially loved the slow burn 🔥!
I mean she’s only human!!! This was really like 1.5 pepper 🌶️ probably. The found alien family made me smile! Can’t wait to read more. And that epilogue…🧐😮😮😮😮 Definitely pick this one up!

Thank you to the authors and the 42 Fold Studio (their artist designed the cover and it’s great)!!!

This was a fun sci-fi romance with a bunch of silly names and goofiness added in! Aliens accidentally abduct a librarian who ends up having super powers when outside of Earth's atmosphere, and chaos abounds!

The romance part is slow burn, and moderately spicy at the end. Nothing over the top.

The main characters are great, and the secondary characters are fun.

I look forward to more in this series! Thank you to the authors and to Friends of 42 for this gifted ARC.
