Unapologetically romantic. Unapologetically real. Broken takes the erotic to another level. The narrator's idiosyncratic realism is honest, visceral and full of messy, hot human dynamics. Oh yes, full of toe curling times as well!
The world of Guya is set in a fantasy land that piggybacks the genre to expose genuine emotional gravity. Here, in Broken, that gravity runs deep. From your first invitation to remember the village, Anoro, through the circle of return, Broken is a stunningly accurate and breathtakingly beautiful read about gay love.
The story starts with the narrator as a young man learning the art of healing. He meets the warrior, Perpuchkan, after rescuing him from a bear trap and helping his master heal the wounds with their gold magic. Over the months of healing the narrator's fondness for Perpuchkan grows. Unfortunately, Perpuchkan disappears after the narrator is discovered performing one of the most intensely honest and visual acts of love I've ever read. (Until I read another one also in this book).
A few years later, the narrator, now a fully fledged healer, embarks on a journey to find his warrior. Years are spent sharing his body with others while searching for his true love. Broken is an intimate, and tangible record of those encounters and that journey.
Zac Baker's lyrical prose and skilfil metaphors make his Guya world perfect for fans of the fantasy novella format. Sometimes the best stories come in small volumes and the world of Guya delivers some serious high hit erotica in a compact read.
As a note: the more Zac Baker I read, the more I realise his expertise is highlighting the raw, unforgettable vulnerability of men in love. Broken is a powerful celebration of how deep that love can go. Read it, live it, feel it!

This story, and this writer, perhaps isn't going to be for everyone, even if you enjoy MM spicy fantasy fiction. But my guess is that the people that do enjoy this are going to put Zac Baker in their 'favorite authors list'. I think he does something that is rare. The spice here is at maximum, and written beautifully, with emotion and with real human flaws, lust and longing. The fantasy elements, including the healing powers that run through the heart of the book, are understated and made real because of that. At its heart the story is a quest - a young man searches the world for a first love, a warrior that came into his life but disappeared. As he grows older he comes to see that he has no option than to try to find the man. The heart does what it will do. There is a beautiful romance here, loving and tender, told in flashed of flawed memory. I loved this book. It has the quality of a gay legend.

Good short story about a mans quest to find his warrior. He finds love along the way as he uses his gifts without factoring in what it costs him.
