To Love a Cowboy

Rate this book
Seven years ago, Roan Bucklin left the family ranch for college, leaving foreman Patrick Lassiter with a mix of sweltering emotions: relief, regret, and nearly overwhelming desire. Afraid that Roan would regret giving himself to an older man, Patrick let him go without a word about his true feelings. But Roan took Patrick's heart with him.

Roan had harbored a crush on Patrick from the time he'd turned fourteen. He thought he'd gotten over it, grown up, moved on, but now he's back and home to stay. After one look, he knows he has something to prove to Patrick - that he wants to be claimed by the cowboy who has always possessed his heart.

Includes the Bonus Novella ~ Justice

Years of eating, breathing and dreaming revenge have left the three Abrams brothers homesick for a place that doesn't exist. When they happen upon the small town of Justice, the welcome and acceptance seems too good to be true. As each brother finds a reason to stay, the desire for revenge fades - until one Abrams brother disappears. Then Justice bonds together to support its own, and the brothers discover they've finally found a home.

2 and 1/2 Stars rounded up. If I was grading this book it would be a C-. I love a May /December romance, but this was tiring. The constant fighting and the fact that they were hot for each other one minute and walking away the next was also irritating. Patrick May have been in his forties but he acted like a ten year old girl. This is not my idea of a strong, butch , alpha cowboy.

The other thing that bothers me is that they had unprotected sex. Not a good idea without being tested and committed.

This is my first book by Rhianna Aile. I’m not sure if I will look for any more. Fortunately, this was a library book.

It seems I liked things the other readers didn't like.
I LOVED the huge age difference! I'm a sucker for this type of relationship and the fact that they've had pseudo father-son relationship (kind of) makes their romance more forbidden and I liked it! I also loved the pov changes. TBH I'm tired of always predictable 'one chapter - one pov' scheme. Here it was asymmetric, like we're having Roan's pov for some time and then suddenly - a glimpse of Patrick's pov! I think it was original and suited the story very well.

Now what I didn't like.
For me there wasn't any real conflict here. Roan and Patrick have loved each other for years, Roan's father was very supportive, Tyler wasn't even an issue, since he's just a fuck buddy, the townsfolk weren't extremely homophobic... all in all I didn't understand why MCs couldnt't get their HEA after like the first 30 pages. They kept pushing and pulling, and I didn't really understand why! Also there was one of my pet peeves, namely: they love and want each other and you can cut the tension between them with a knife, but they keep postponing sex for no real reason, only because they 'want to take things slow'. I've yet to see a man, who would turn down sex from the person he's in love and lust with and with no real obstacles in sight, just coz he wants to take things slow xD Seriously it's just so feminine quality!

But I still liked it :) And I especially loved Tyler and Karl's story! Would like to read more about them :)

Two stories in one book.

This was two books in one. I liked the second book more. The first one was ok. I liked the characters, and they both had good storylines.

While I enjoyed the story of Patrick and Roan because it had sexy cowboys in it, there was just some parts that took away from the enjoyment of the book for me.

Roan arrived on his father's doorstep at 10 and by his teens was fantasizing about the ranch foreman, Patrick. As he's about to leave for college at 18 he and Patrick had a moment under a willow tree by the pond. Roan's been gone seven years but neither man has forgotten that moment nor the burning desire they have for the other. Patrick's fear is that Roan will not want someone of his age and will leave him with a broken heart. Roan will need to learn to control his impulsive nature and do all that he can to convince Patrick of his desire and sincerity.

Also included in this is a second story Justice. Adam, Noah, and Nate are on the trail of the man responsible for the death of their parents when the trail leads them to Justice. Justice is unlike any other town they've been to in the past, open and welcoming, a place they could call home. Surprises are everywhere, from the woman running the livery stables to the gay man behind the bar and his partner who runs the local brothel.

Both are very well written and interesting reads.

Bad writing, poor execution of the plot, too many clichés without a true analisys of characters and background, it seemed to me that the only purpose in this narration was to have an excuse to describe hot sex scenes. definitely not my thing.

This review is just for the title story, To Love a Cowboy. I did not read the second story, Justice. Sorry...

This was a story with lots of potential. Roan Bucklin grew up on his father's ranch, and has been in love with the ranch foreman, Patrick Lassiter, since he was 14. After leaving home at 18 to go to college and work at other ranches, Roan has now, at age 25, returned to his home to win the man he loves.
Patrick Lassiter is 45, and although he has a pretty good arrangement (i.e. friendship and great sex) with Tyler, he's always been in love with Roan, his best friend's son. Patrick knew Roan had a crush on him growing up, but he kept his distance due to the boy's age.
Now that Roan's back, the two men must overcome their personal obstacles to be together. Roan must deal with his jealousy of Patrick's friendship with Tyler, and Patrick must get over the fear that Roan's youth will eventually cause him to leave.

This could have been a great story, but instead it was only mediocre, due to a lot of issues, which fit into two categories: 1. Bad writing, and 2. the age difference.

The bad writing:
1. There were a lot of issues with shifting POV. If you're going to do a book that shifts POV, you need to give equal time, and you need to make it clear whose POV you're in at any given time. She would spend 10-15 pages from Patrick's POV, then shift to Roan for two paragraphs, then back to Patrick for five pages, then Roan for 2, etc. And there was no warning (i.e. page breaks), so you never really knew whose POV you were coming from. Then, after spending most of the book shifting between Roan and Patrick, she suddenly shifted to Tyler for a chapter. What the hell? There was even maybe one sentence in the beginning where she shifted to Roan's father, Finn. It was all over the place and very poorly done.
2. A lot of the backstory came out in dialogue, which is fine - I'm all about a writer introducing the backstory in an organic way rather than doing a big info dump at the beginning. But if you're going to do that, you have to do it in a way that feels natural. You can't have characters telling each other stuff about their past that the other person already knows/was present for. People just don't talk like that.
3. I'm a stickler for character development. I will never give a book 4 or 5 stars if I didn't connect to the characters and care for them. And if you don't develop them, I can't connect to them and the story just won't be as good. I never really fell in love, or even like, with these characters. They were just sort of... there.

The age difference:
Roan and Patrick have a 20 year gap. This might not bother me so much if Patrick hadn't known Roan since he was 10 and watched him grow up. But he did, and I found it a little creepy. I kept imagining if this were a straight romance, with a 25 year old woman and 45 year old man whom she had known since childhood... yuck. And Roan's father Finn, Patrick's best friend, knows all about it and is totally supportive. It just seemed weird to me. Again, if your 25 year old daughter told you she was in love with your 45 year old best friend and wanted to begin a sexual relationship with him... I don't know. Maybe in some circumstances this could have worked, but it just didn't work for me in this story.

Bottom line: Great idea, poor execution.

Even if the title is the same of the first story, the book is really two complete stories of about the same lenght.

In the first, To Love a Cowboy, Patrick is a 45 years old foreman of a wealthy horse ranch. He is also the owner of the 45% of that ranch, being an old friend of the boss, and he is also in love with the 25 years old son of his friend, Roan. Roan has a crush on Patrick since he was 14, and he has also managed to sneak an handjob with said foreman when he was 18. But soon after Patrick had chicken out on the prospective to be in love with a so much younger man and Roan went to college and never back home for seven years. Now he is again at home and he has every intention to bring down the walls Patrick has built around him.

I like the story, even if I find strange to read of a total acceptance of manlove in a small town. No one says nothing, nor Roan's father (and maybe this is due to his long date friendship with Patrick), or the people on the ranch, or in the village. And around the ranch there is not one but even two gay bars, or at least a place where gay couples can hang out without problems... Apart this strange feeling (strange but not bad...), the two main characters are really charming. Patrick is a a one piece man, who believe in the forever love and family. Maybe a bit stubborn in refusing a good thing when it's right in front of him, but ready to admit his mistakes. Roan is the classical eager puppy lover: young and not still enough confident of his powers, he relies on sex to stake his claim. And to prove a point. When refused at eighteen years old he has not adopted the mourning lover beahviour, and instead he has made as much experiences as he could, and now he is ready, and willing, to admit that his first love was the real one. If said love is willing to say the same.

The second story, Justice, has an historical setting in a late nineteen century Far West small town, the Justice of the title. But it is also a alternative world setting. In fact, in the small town, all the main characters are gays: the hotel owner, the saloon owner and his lover, the brothel owner, the librarian... only the stable owner is not gay... she is a woman and she is lesbian! Three (gay) brothers arrive in this fantasy land town in search of vengeance upon an old enemy, and instead they find love. The younger, Nate, is involved in a threesome with Luke and Jamison (saloon and brothel owners) and the middle, Noah, with Simon (hotel owner); instead Adam, the older, is a bit reluctant to surrender to the courtship of the librarian, Dale. Most of the romance is spent telling us of the newborn couples and the revenge plan is put aside until almost the end. Probably the characters who win the main scene are Noah and Simon. Adam and Nate play the role of supporting characters. Again the total acceptance is a little disconcerting, but in this case is more "normal", given also the introduction of the author where she tells us as she dreamed on the old western movies imagining to remove the weak heroines.

If you love the western setting, contemporary or historical, and love your M/M romance a bit sexy and erotic, these two stories are for you.

This book was split in two parts. The biggest part being the main story "To Love A Cowboy". I don't have much to say about it besides that I didn't really like it. Ranch owner's son in love with the foreman since he was a kid, the foreman thought he was too old for him, misunderstanding happen, the kid goes away, comes back a couple of years later, still in love and seduces back the foreman. The boy is pretty promiscuous and he has fun making the foreman jealous by flaunting his conquests in his face. Turn off for me.

The second part of the book is the western story called "Justice" about three gay brothers coming to a town in search of vengeance for their parents' murder. The town is everything they didn't expect, full of gay men and very accepting of them. Instead of the revenge they sought, they instead each find a place they could easily call home in this small town. That is, until one of them is found bleeding and shot. Will Justice be served and will they finally be able to move on?

The youngest brother was the less interesting, mostly because he hooks up with the tavern owner and his brothel owner boyfriend....Personally don't like threesome and the couple already makes it clear that they're just playing with the brother and they only love each other. Much drama with the brothel owner too. But I pity the guy that's the apparent third wheel.

The middle brother was okay. Nothing much to say besides that since it's a short story everything happens very fast.

The eldest was my favorite~ He's pretty stubborn and so he ran from his potential love interest for a long long time. While he saw his younger brothers settling down and getting happy he refused to do the same until his parents could rest in peace.

As much as I liked reading To Love a Cowboy--it was not exceptional but enjoyable. Roan's feelings are endearing, his father is my favorite character, I liked his tolerance, and the age gap between Roan and Patrick didn't stand out, what I liked because other authors focus on the age gap most of the time and make it sound as if it were a sin to love someone older, or much younger--I detested Justice. The latter resembled more a speed dating agenda than a fiction.

2 ** stars (3 *** stars for To Love a Cowboy + 1 * star for Justice /2) it's that simple.

I read To Love a Cowboy again and I am still liking it for the same reasons. I wish Karl and Tyler's relationship was in a separate book, I loved their connection in their dedicated chapter.
I didn't read Justice this time... for the same reasons.

Well, not really good for me.. It was a way to pass time, but both stories didn;t have much depth. Was a little disappointed since I have enjoyed her writings so much when she's paired with other authors... This duo just didn't have much 'meat' to it.. oh well.

The first one, well the age difference would have worked perfectly fine for me, but it seemed kind of weird that the son was still living with his dad, and the guy he was in love with was his dad's best friend.. and his dad was so non-chalant..

The second story, well, the three brothers were out for revenge, and I guess the premise that, as they found love, they found less need to go after revenge was good, but I think the fact these stories were so short left a little to be desired in character background and development..

I have yet to read Justice and I'm not sure I will anytime soon since it is shaping up as something that is very much not my cup of tea.

As for the To love a cowboy story, I liked it a lot.

It started as sort of a pissing match between Roan and Patrick but as we got to know the characters better their actions made more sense. There was alot of tension and a lot of feelings and it was nice to see them both so honest with their feelings, even if at the beginning it was only with themselves. I also liked that they were able to aknowledge when they screwed up. I appriciated that they have both someone to talk to, someone they were honest with. It was all rather refreshing.

The interlude ith Tyler and Keith was lovely as well.

And the ending, so so so sweet.

The first story was okay. Not great by any means, but okay. I like the older man thing but this one was a little creepy. Patrick knowing Roan from the time he was 10 kind of gave it the creep factor, though nothing happened between them until Roan was 18.

The second story (Justice) was almost funny and I'm not sure it was meant to be. Once I got beyond the strange .......... very accepting....... town folks, it was okay. From what I understood, the author didn't exactly write it as any type of serious story anyway. If you can get beyond all of the sex there is a story there. Kind of.

Both stories were good time wasters, though probably not something I would recommend. I'm a fan of the author so this will not prevent me from reading her other stuff.

Loved this story! It was perfect & has given me seveal day-dreams to enjoy. If you're gonna read a cowboy story, this is the one. It has a May/December theme & it a HEA.
I like the bratty son that comes back to the ranch & the single-mindedness towards the object of his desire.
I like the foreman & his steady way, but he's too stubborn sometimes & it stops him from being happy...but that's what makes a good story.

I liked the setting, enjoyed the characters but felt a little cheated. It's like the author had a great plot, great story that could have easily been a 5 stars but lost it in the second story. I did love the sexy hot cowboy love :)

I only read the first story and loved it. The age difference didn't bother me at all but the use of "older man", "blonde man" and things of that nature were a bit annoying. The smexing was very nice and overall a nice little read.

Five stars for the first one. I remember I read it years back, and I re-read it yesterday, still beautiful. The second one though. I would have read it if it would make up it's mind, become either a romance or erotica.
