There's no need to lose face, forgo the Peking duck or miss the slow boat down the Yangtze. This phrasebook will prove more valuable on the road than a bicycle in Beijing.
Mostly useful as a companion on a trip rather than a guide for those who want to learn the language. It also consists of familiar language which can be helpful if you are strolling the streets of China. An Hsk 1 student who has a varied set of learned vocabulary might find this book repetitive and stick to his/her own acquired knowledge which is more structure and pedogical rather than what is in the book. But foreigner who wants to go visit China and do not need to learn the language can find this book very practical.
I've been studying Chinese for 10 years now but I wanted a book that had all the tourist and travel info to revise for my trip. This book was really great. While it didn't have any grammar to speak of it was in really well organised sections and had lots of useful phrases. I'm not sure I'd recommend this for people who haven't already studied Chinese but for people who know the language some already this would be really useful for travelling. I will definitely be bringing it with me on my trip.
Outstanding handy resource for learning mandarin. Make sure you get the standard pinyin version instead of the specialized Lonely Planet created alphabet version.
Great read. All you need for daily essential Mandarin. Shame that they don't have localise version when you visit places such as Malaysia and Singapore. As the book is meant for main land China.
