Caleb is a trans man with no insurance, and no money to afford the treatments he so desperately wants. When someone hands him a card one night, promising to help him achieve his ideal body, it sounds too good to be true. And if it sounds too good to be true, it almost always is.
Inspired by You Weren’t Meant To Be Human by AJW, Worm Meat is about the lengths we will go for control. Over ourselves, and those around us.
I got a copy of this book in an IG giveaway which is goated as hell. I wanted more from this i think. With short stories its hard bc i want such a developed world and characters which is just impossible to achieve in such a short amount of pages. I think an issue i had was that i didn't feel like there was any purpose, kinda like ok so what. i liked this idea but i dont think i really got anything from it. the gore was nice but a little repetitive. i do love the inclusion of alternate endings bc i wanted the 2nd one to happen more where he likes his body and i get a happy trans ending. The Woman reminded me of the other mother from coraline. Also i always am craving trans body horror sex which i know just wasnt really the point of the story but a guy can dream <3
Quotes: - 'She just smiled at him, though, and moved his hands until they were touching his own chest. His... flat chest. Holy shit, the worms gave him top surgery. The worms ate his fucking tits.'
Disclaimer: I received an ebook-copy from the author.
You followed a strange man to a meeting with an even stranger woman and find yourself enthralled by her and the worms living under her skin. Caleb, the man, looked for transformation in shady places and found himself changed, but still a stranger in his own body, is unable to benefit from the worms’ blessing. But maybe you can make it work? Told in 3 separate parts, with you watching the confrontation, Caleb’s backstory and the woman’s own thoughts as the mother of her hive, this is a short, but very fun horror story with some gore, a lot of icky squirming scenes and a heavy focus on the feelings of (dis)comfort in ones own body. I would have enjoyed for the scene of Caleb’s awakening to be a bit further extended to focus more heavily on how the transformation did not work for him (I am a real fan of body horror though <3), but I really enjoyed everything else. I am especially glad that the woman got her own scene and how her interaction with the worms was depicted. The line between love and horror can indeed be quite fine sometimes. This short piece slots in neatly with other trans-formation horror short stories while still being a fun little addition to readers of the genre. If you want a deeply immersive and visceral short story that examines bodily autonomy as well as what the perfect body really means for someone, then you should read this! Or if you like worms. Definitely read this if you like worms.

God, I love worm books!! There’s just something about them that gives me the ick in the best way possible.
In Worm Meat, we meet Caleb, a trans man who is desperate for treatment he simply can’t access. Then he meets Her, a trans woman who claims she can give Caleb the body he’s always wanted. Naturally, things don’t go quite as expected, and there may or may not be a lot of worms involved.
This is a fantastic short horror read, though I honestly wish it had been a little longer. I would have loved to learn more about Her and her story. Even so, it packs a lot into a short page count and delivers plenty of unsettling body horror.
If you like worms, read this book. If you hate worms, read this book.
Thanks to the author for an ARC to read and review!
5 stars. Worm Meat, absolutely love the title, it completely freaks me out, which is the point, I assume. Loved the pov of the novelette, it transported me, I was there. Very well written.
She, the Worm master, is fascinating, I'm obsessed with her. I'd love to know more about her, about her hive-mind agenda, her plans, her past, what are her interests and her drive, is it only worm related? What would She think of me? Would She like me? who said that? 👀
Would I read another novelette or book about Her? Without a doubt. And tbh, I was readying myself for more ick and squirm since it's a body horror book, and I'm glad to say I had it under control, actually it was the cover that made me cringe more than the brilliant descriptions from the author. So kudos for that sick cover 🪱. Enoli Lee does not disappoint.
(Thank you to the author for sending me an advanced copy to read + review!)
I thought that Worm Meat was genuinely stomach churning at points, and that is a high bar to clear for me as a reader/viewer. I do not tend to struggle with violence or viscera at all, but this novella had me squirming at points (you can decide if that pun was intentional or not) This was the first time I've had to set a book down and take a second to breathe, so congratulations! Honestly, my only complaint is that I wished there was an extra chapter or two in the middle, just to fully flesh things out as I wanted to know more and dig deeper into the world laid out here; though if my only issue is that I wanted more, is that really an issue? I'll leave that up to you to decide.
What a good time this was. I was so eager to read this book and it met my every expectations.
This was very stunningly written and I adored the narrative style so much. This is one of these stories that enthrals you from page 1 and there is no way to stop reading as more and more horrific events happens right in front of your eyes. And every seconds of it was just so entertaining.
Body horror about the actions that someone is ready to take to be happy in their skin always works for me, and this one was just so well done. I was absolutely fascinated by every seconds of this story and I need a lot more of where this comes from, please and thank you.
Whoa. To say this book is a masterpiece would be an understatement. I’ve never read anything like this before. It’s written partly in second person (breaking all the rules I was taught in school), which really made me feel like I was a witness to everything that happened. It’s so skin-crawlingly immersive and descriptive. I can’t say enough good things about the writing style and the depth of characters in such a short work. Enoli Lee is really an author to watch and I am a huge fan ready to devour the rest of their work. If you can stomach anything while reading this, I suggest something sour lemon or lime🪱🍋
Enoli Lee has been on my radar for a while and I'm so so glad to report that they definitely work for me.
Body horror has kinda been my jam this year and this one, while short, packed such a big punch. What would you give to have your perfect body? Would it be worth it? This is one question for cis people, but a completely different one for trans people and I thought that Lee just so encapsulated some complicated feelings behind that.
The narrative style made it extra eerie and just chilling. You are inserted in as a voyeur and it makes it just so much more.
UGH WOW. Leave it to trans authors to always write incredible body horror.
This novella is so short but it packs a punch in less than 60 pages. It’s gross, sad, horrifying, and heartwarming with that alt ending, all wrapped up in a squirming squiggly wormy mess (in all the best ways.)
I genuinely felt love for these characters which is crazy because how can Lee get me to absolutely fall head over heels in the shortest amount of time possible??? Sorcery. And a testament to good writing of course.
I’m so happy I live in a universe where this book exists, I won’t forget it

I loved every second, every word, every page of this lil horror trans story. Like WOW! The way Enoli narrates and plays with the 2nd person pov blew my freaking mind!
I'm very selective with my horror and gore because I have a sensitive stomach 😅 So this body horror was almost at the limit of my fine line but it was perfectly excuted that it actually gelled with me.
Caleb's story is so relatable. Dysphoria is a bitch and to see it portrayed like this... I just don't have the words to describe how much I loved this story.
I love Enoli's writting and this body horror trans story was perfect.
Trans authors writing body horror will ALWAYS do it better than anyone else because trans authors UNDERSTAND body horror better than anyone else. I said what I said! 🗣
This was absolutely disgusting, heartbreaking, disturbing, grotesque, and I loved all 44 pages of it.
Short, slick, and skin-crawlingly creepy, Worm Meat's surreal narrative, shifting perspectives, and excellent use of second person create an ominous story that gave me the vibes of a classic horror movie, but with a refreshing queer twist. I highly recommend this to horror fans!
(So excited to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of this stunning story!)Absolutely stunning in a way that makes me squirm. I couldn't ask for anything more.
This was so interesting! The substance/the beauty but regarding transition rather than youth/conventional beauty standards. I love worm anything so I enjoyed the body horror so much. Delicious descriptions and a very creepy atmosphere. I only wish it was longer so I could stay in wormland longer!!!
would you love me if i was a worm? and if the worm promised you the perfect body....
i am SICK!!
trans writers always know what theyere doing when it comes to body horror and Worms.
this was a fun short read. the style is reminiscent of brainwyrms... almost comedic at times which isnt my personal taste but it makes it all the more revolting.. short and punchy... gets very dark when it needs to be.. for such a short work it packs alot of transgressive themes, angst, desperation, revulsion
2nd person narrator + lots of messy trans rep
CW: mentions of self harm and suicidal thoughts (ARC read)
