Season of the Witch goes out with a bang!
Zatanna and her father, Zatara, make their escape, which leaves Diana alone in her fight against Cale's Suicide Squad. The Hydra-like robot with Amazo powers finally takes Wonder Woman down, and she wakes up in Area 41.
But she's not alone. Minerva, whose imprisonment is being used against her as psychological torture, was also captured.
Meanwhile, Persephone is pulling on Hades' heartstrings in an attempt to free Diana, and while it might just work, it also has the potential to become the rise of Cheetah.
That ending packed a punch!
Highly Recommended.

Diana tells Zatara and Zatana to leave, so they do, and Diana goes toe to toe with the Iron Maiden alone. It manages to capture and take her to Cale's base in Area 41, where they torture and collect Diana's blood. Diana sees Barbra there but cannot seem to escape her restraints.
Persephone convinces Hades to summon Diana to hell as she has to return there for a month at a time of his choosing. So Hades pulls Diana from her prison in Area 41 directly to hell and Diana resents not being able to save Barbra. Cale then shows Barbra footage of Diana disappearing trying to convince her that Diana left her.
Wonder what Cale has planned for Barbra? If what’s been happening in the absolute universe is an indicator, they’re probably going to turn her into some kind of monster/villain. I hope not though cause that would absolutely ruin Diana, especially if it’s something irreversible, Zatana is probably going to help somehow though.

Thompson and Sherman continue to deliver some of the most striking visuals in DC’s lineup and this arc finale has plenty of big moments on the page. But this one just didn’t land for me the way previous issues have, and I know lots have loved this… but for me there’s a lot happening as Diana’s captured, Veronica Cale is escalating, the Zatara family drama, and yet I never felt fully invested. The pieces are clearly being moved into place for something bigger and I can see the craft in it, but it read more like connective tissue than a satisfying chapter on its own for me. The art remains the undeniable highlight throughout. I’m still on board for what comes next, but this was my least favorite issue of the run so far.

Thank you Kelly Thompson, thank you Hayden Sherman, thank you Jordie Bellaire, and a role I don’t get enough thanks to but this series reminds me of the power of the letterer…thank you Becca Carey!! This is a generational team for a generational run and each issue is better than the last, what a phenomenal read filled with beautiful and story telling depicting the chaos of battle and the hardships of loss. I love it all so much, especially when you open the issue to find Diana leg pressing a giant evolving robot hellbent on capturing Giovanni Zatara for Cale. Diana uses her skills to knock the robot, which almost looks like it was pulled from the incredibles movie, to give Zatanna and her father the room to teleport away…no matter how much it hurt Zatanna to leave her behind. Made especially worse by Cale changing the directive of the Iron Maiden to target and capture Diana instead of Zatara once she realized they were gone. Now there is an especially cool moment where the prison grabs hold of Pegasus, only for Diana to pull out a new trick as she used a piece of her armor as a projectile to throw and destroy the arm holding down her trusty steed…but that’s the big problem with this thing, it is constantly shifting, evolving, an rebuilding itself to be the perfect prison. Diana takes one arm down with magic and it won’t let her do it again. But then it starts to preemptively learn, preventing Diana from even finishing a call to Hecate for help as she is finally captured. But to give us a moment to breathe after such a hard fought battle…we find that Doctor Poison has finally landed on the Salt Flats in Utah, lol, after Diana chucked her away from the battle after putting her in that magic sphere right at the start of this arc.
But with that moment to come up for air over, we jump over to Area 41.X where Diana is captive. Cale makes sure they wheel the captured Barbara in front of Diana to make her feel even more hopeless. They are bringing Barbara to the same room with Priscilla Rich’s body, which continually makes up the prerequisites for a terrible time. Aside from the concern over her captive friend, Diana’s mind is filled with the worst possible scenarios of the weapons they could make with her body. They continually electrocute her to prevent her from casting a spell, and using high intensity lasers they are even able to make Diana bleed to collect her blood. With every shock Diana seems to brush off, Cale only increases the intensity to the point the shocks are literally black and make Diana’s eyes roll to the back of her head as she screams out in pain.
But then we shift over to an unexpected location…the underworld and the palace of King Hades and his queen Persephone. After all this time Hades has actually reached a level of understanding about their relationship has he knows she can never truly love him. There were times where it may have worked…but he now understands she can never love someone who enslaved her. He even recognizes that he had a chance to free her and he failed. It’s uncertain if she would have stayed, but they certainly would have been friends instead of enemies. But Persephone now comes to him with the desire to be a friend, to soften his heart…we do not hear what she proposes only why…
“Because the world is dark and wrong and twisted strangely at its center. A doom that will cause even the gods themselves to shriek with terror. How can we not fight against that?”
With that said, Persephone seals her words with a kiss. Seemingly promising to accept Hades as her husband if she accepts her cause to make it his own. This has some huge implications, as after the most recent round of shocks for Diana…a blue flaw suddenly appeared before her as a hand rose from the underworld to drag her down and out of there! But that’s the last thing she wants, her friend is still captive and she cannot leave Barbara alone in there. Although Cale hates to see Diana escape, she always weaponizes a situation to be in her favor. This time she shows the footage they have of Diana leaving to Barbara, simultaneously ripping away any hope that Diana will save her and painting a picture that Diana is only in it to save herself. We can literally see the hope drain from Barbara’s eyes as the images flash on the screens around her as if she is doomed to accept the fate of the former cheetah dead at her feet. Diana was pulled all the way down to the wild isle. She believes it is because her deal with Hades to come back to the underworld one month of every year happened to come at the worst possible time…but I think there is more to this. I think Persephone struck a deal to save Diana so they could give her the tools necessary to fight back. But at the moment that is not clear to Diana, and being forced to abandon everything she holds dear does not suit her as she immediately begins to crack as she yells out into the underworld with a fury which cracks in the sky! Woah.

I was somewhat surprised by how dangerous the teased antagonist was and still not convinced. But it does allow us to see Wonder Woman in a challenging situation, and the solution is a great call-back to an earlier story. It's bittersweet for Wonder Woman as while it solves her immediate problem it deprives her from solving another, and considering how selfless Diana is I think she'd genuinely rather still be in trouble.
It almost becomes repetitive to state how good the art is in this book. There's the distinct panel shapes as usual but this issue's stand-out has to be how they depict a teleportation. It delivers the animated action of such an event perfectly.
It may be the benefit of reading vol.1 while reading this arc but this book is definitely nearing the top of my favourite ongoing book this year. The lead character and mythology surrounding them feels so well thought out that I feel every step is carefully planned. It feels like Thompson created a "bible"/map for a 50-100 issue series and it's now unfolding issue by issue. I suspect this really isn't the case but it's skilled writing for it to appear that way.
Overall impression = 4/5
Writing = 4/5

Will I read the next issue? definitely
Wait for the trade collection? It's probably a matter of personal preference. I think either format will work. I know I'm always tempted to have a display copy.

This was a fun issue, but for me it was not the series' strongest installment. I am perfectly fine with Diana being pushed to her limits and finding herself in a situation she cannot escape through strength alone. Whether she needs help from others or has to rely on her own ingenuity, that kind of challenge can make for compelling storytelling. However, the way Zatara and Zatanna fled felt anticlimactic and took some of the impact away from the conclusion.
Overall, this issue felt more like a setup for the next story arc than a true ending to the current one. I do not mind leaving plot threads unresolved, but the execution here did not quite work for me. That does not make it a bad issue by any means. There were simply a few elements that did not come together as well as I had hoped.
The artwork continues to be spectacular, and seeing the return of Hades and Persephone was a highlight. Even though this felt like a transitional chapter, I still highly recommend the series.

Amazing ending to this issue, and my god Sherman’s art and layouts are out of this world. So creative.
However, this Barbara conflict feels so forced and cheap imo. Doesn’t feel natural, and so much of Diana’s supporting cast still isn’t fleshed out enough.
This is issue 20, the supporting cast being shoved to the wayside has really bothered me. This series is amazing, but Kelly needs to set aside time to develop the other characters in Diana’s life. I hope this next arc does that, and Barbara’s story doesn’t come off forced or half baked. Remember how much Absolute Batman makes us feel about all those supporting characters??? I want that in this book.

We’re so blessed with every Hayden Sherman illustrated issue of this book. How they pull off complicated paneling in such a seamless way is so impressive. The depiction of Dianna fighting a huge mech was so cool, and I always love when we get glimpses at the Underworld. Just please don’t let Absolute Minerva have a villain turn…

Diana may have gained a potential ally in Zatanna, but she may have lost Minerva. It will be at least a month in story time, or next issue for us readers, before she could attempt a jailbreak.
If it's a jailbreak Diana is planning, this could be the perfect story for another Absolute Batman team-up. Just saying.

I'm glad we finally pay off the 1 month on hades thing mentioned at the beginning of this run. And at such a pivotal point of her story. I can't wait to see what happens next, especially to Minera who will clearly now become the new Cheeta.

Genuinely a bit disappointed by the Barbara stuff because it was so predictable. This issue was good, the art was incredible, and I can see how it goes within the greater plot. Even so, it felt a bit underwhelming on its own.

finally caught up on this and absolute batman!!! this diana feels more like diana than a lot of mainline stories… DC has disrespected this character since the dawn of time and im really happy to see her getting an actual thought out storyline and character development.
