Fire Chronicles #2

Dragons Don't Love

Rate this book
A dragon shifter fairy tale for adult readers.

It’s finally the day of claiming. A dragon charges in breathing fire and leaves with an unwilling captive as his new bride. Roxanne, one of the brides he will chose from, wants nothing to do with the tradition that has gone on for thousands of years. From an early age she’s had one goal...

Kill the dragon.

Laryn—arrogant, gorgeous, and heartbroken since the death of his former bride has a plan for the new one. He will never love again. Of course, the last thing he expects is a feisty warrior landing on his back with a sharp sword in her hands intent on death. His death.

It’s a match made in… well… you need to read to find out.

Each Fire Chronicles book is a complete love story but it’s recommended you read Dragon’s Don’t Cry first to understand more of the world building.

I’m a writer, author, word warrior! I owned an independent bookstore for many years in my 20’s and 30’s. So it should be obvious, I LOVE BOOKS. Fiction or non-fiction it doesn’t matter. I hated self-help but then found Og Mandino. I hated French history and the game of chess and then discovered The Eight by Katherine Neville. I’ve stopped limiting myself to what I think I like.

That brings me to paranormal fiction. It’s a passion of mine. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, angels and demons, I read them all. I’ve wanted to write a vampire/werewolf novel for a long time. Taking a break from another series (aka Suzie Ivy The Bad Luck Detective), I decided to write the story screaming inside my head. The Fang Chronicles Book I almost wrote itself. No research or trying to remember a specific conversation, all I needed to do was keep the names straight.

I don't rape anymore is not good enough.

As I was describing the plot of this book to my husband he started singing "Puff, the rapey dragon lived by the sea". Other than the name of the dragon, this line fits perfectly.

Our hero was crazed by grief since his last "bride" died approximately 27 years ago. Although the setup of the book says the dragons become crazed because they loved their brides deeply, the dragons are willing to put each bride through a nightmarish several year period until she "settles".

The dragons are cursed so they won't find their mate because one of them killed his beloved when he discovered she wasn't a virgin. Unfortunately for him, she was the daughter of the goddess Hera. The virgin sacrifices die of old age eventually, so the dragons are allowed to take a new one every hundred years. They take her from her village, terrify her, rape her, and mostly isolate her in their 4-5 room tower for the rest of her life. It takes years of rape and isolation, but the bride eventually settles and loves her dragon deeply. The dragons see those initial years as annoying and a waste of their limited time with their bride.

The dragon in the first book discovered over his 70-odd brides that if he didn't rape them the brides settled into their life of isolation much more quickly, but he wasn't able to convince the other three dragons. This book is about one of the unconvinced dragons.

Unlike all his previous brides, this bride isn't raped because she's like no other bride he's ever had. She is a warrior woman so he gives her weapons and dresses her in scanty leather outfits that are basically a bra and two short flaps of leather in front and back (no underwear). However, she is uncontrollably drawn to him and they have sex. She falls in love, but he never wants to fall in love again because he doesn't want to go through the grieving period.

As for as why I didn't find this book romantic: "Maleah, my last bride, hated me for years for what I did to her on the day of her claiming." and "It's best to get the deed over with and get on with the years of fear and crying before a bride finally settles into her life." and "Maybe, just maybe, this one will not cry when I take her maidenhead." From the first book and Bastien's point of view: "Our Brides always proved virgins. This was why the annoying females needed quick deflowering. Sarn, Laryn (the hero in this book), and Tahr, my brethren, argued with me continually. I had a problem with taking an unwilling bride before she settled. I'd learned through trial and error that if human females had a mental connection, they took to bedroom activity with more zest." We're talking about non-consensual sex, i.e. rape.

Rapists are not romantic to me. At all. Most people will read this review and think "wow, Abra just doesn't get romantic redemption through love" and others will think "wow, what a huge ick factor. This book isn't for me".

The sex scenes in this book and the previous one are very boring and after a few I just skimmed the rest.

I have been a Fan of D'Elen McCain for a few years now and I happen to adore and love reading all of her books. Ms.McCain truly has a gold hand when comes to writing. She is absolutely awesome!! She has a great Imagination, fantastic, magical, engaging, extraordinary and talented writer. This storyline is compelling, marvelous, hilarious, exciting, wonderful, terrific and well written. Her characters are strong, confident, sexy, HOT, amazing, fabulous and stunning. The dialogue is well paced, funny at the right moments, astounding, lovable and the dragons has just right amount of arrogance. You will truly fall head over hills in love baby and the adults Dragons.

I rated this book Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️and Four Flames

This series is about four dragons, a curse placed on their kind by Hera and what it takes to break the curse.

In book 1 we learn about Bastian the red dragon, who's greatest treasure is his pride. Which he ultimately gives up for Acasia and breaks the curse.
Book 2 follows Laryn and Roxanne.

Although this book can be read as a standalone I suggest that you read book 1 first so that you understand their world and the secondary characters better.

I can't help but feel for the dragons and their plight and the way the author writes it you can even understand why they can be a bit arrogant and hostile to their true brides. But I must admit Laryn took arrogance to a new level and with his selfish ways I had a hard time warming up to him at first. Having the secondary characters there help me see beneath his hardened shell.

Roxanne on the other hand I loved from the start. This strong feisty heroine, who had been secretly training to kill the dragon that came to the claiming ceremony for his next bride, was every bit of a match for Laryn. I just couldn't wait to read how this would play out.

It was inevitable that these two stubborn characters would clash, but I was intrigued as to how the author would portray this.

Well...D'Elen Mcclain did it the most hilarious of ways. With witty comments and great banter between the two. For Laryn, who thinks all humans are are weak and inferior, grows to admire and respect his strong willed companion. And it has been depicted well by D'Elen using both dialogue, thoughts and described language. I loved it!

Although this novel is only around a hundred pages D'Elen has yet again achieved well rounded characters in a story that you cannot fail to love. She leads you through different emotions through this book and albit most of the time you will be smiling there are a few heart hitting scenes.
And at the end you are hit with a surprise that most D'Elen Mcclain fans will be going crazy about.

So if you're not a fan, become one; because you truly don't know what you're missing.
I am eagerly awaiting book 3 wondering what on earth can she bring to the table next.

I am ecstatic to be able to share Book II of the Fire Chronicles, Laryn’s stoy by D’Elen McClain. This is one of the best dragon series I have ever read. I could not put it down. Dragons Don’t Love is an adult tale of romance and love that flows smoothly from the pages.

Laryn had been alone for 25 years, now it was his turn to claim his new bride. The symbiotic relationship the curse placed on both dragons and humans was misunderstood by both of them, but because of the dragons love of their brides, they are constantly learning more about them.

Laryn first meets Roxanne when she ends up on his back, trying to kill him. Silly human. She can’t hurt a dragon.

Laryn is stubborn and brings a lot of suffering onto himself, but that is the way of dragons and their pride. He has never been know for his gentleness with his new brides, but when he meets his warrior woman, Roxanne, he marvels at her desire to fight side by side with him. I love the cat and mouse game Laryn plays with Roxanne as he attempts to seduce her, but Dragons Don’t Love and he fights his feelings for her.

Dragons love to steal others treasures and a trip is made to Earth, where we find vampires, shapeshifters and an athlete named Tiger. LOL Thought that was great for some laughs.

Their relationship grows and develops, from acting like a couple of kids having temper tantrums, to adults learning to love and live together. The characters personalities shine through making me love them all, especially Ashrac. Who doesn’t love a baby dragon?

The writing and dialogue had me hanging on D’Elen’s words. At times it was humorous, other times sad, yet other times so very touching.

After Dragons Don’t Cry, I knew where this story was going, but I am still amazed at the ride, reading page after page, unable to put it down until the last word was read. I hated it to end.

Next…Sarn’s story, Dragons Don’t Forgive. I think there may be a new twist in this one and I am very eager to find out.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

Book 2 in The Fire Chronicles Series is another winner! The Dragons in this Realm have been cursed by a Goddess. They are destined to love and loose a human woman over and over again once every 100 years, unless they can find a way to break the curse.

In Dragon's Don't Cry Bastian had to overcome his pride and put his love for Acasia first, willing to give up his life for hers he changes his fate and gets his HEA! Now in Dragon's Don't Love we have Laryn, a cocky, igotisical, vain, arrogant..........(you get the picture) dragon who has decided that if he doesn't allow himself to fall in love with the woman he claims he will save himself from another broken heart. Laryn's flaw is his greed, he wishes to possess every shiny bauble that he finds. In order to find his one true mate he will have to be willing to give up his greatest treasure, can he do it?

I loved Roxanne, D'Elen writes strong women characters in her books and I always love how they stand up for themselves. Roxanne is a true warrior princess and more than equal to the task of taming the over confident Dragon. The dialogue is witty and sarcastic and makes the reader prone to bursts of laughter.

Every book D'Elen writes has at least one scene, and usually 2-3 that touch my heart and bring tears to my eyes. Once again I was trying to carefully wipe away my tears so that my husband wouldn't laugh at me for "crying over a book?" again!

I highly recommend this book, this is a complete love story, but you will enjoy the story even more if you read Dragon's Don't Cry first.

I thought Laryn had learned his lesson but it seems like he really needed a kick in the head from the jump. Roxy came out the gate just as hot headed as Laryn but the ending really took the cake! The story was good, loved reading about Ashrac and the others but Sarn took it to another level. I have to read the next one because I hope Laryn moves on but I know Sarn will be feeling some kind of way after what he’s done.

I was never a dragon paranormal lover. The first book in the series made me change my mind but this story cemented it. Started out hating Laryn; however, the way D'Elen McClain wrote the character through the story made you fall in love with him. Roxanne was a true joy to read about from the beginning and will having you cheering for a HEA. Another great read by an outstanding author.

Roxanne has been preparing her whole life to kill the dragon that takes a virgin sacrifice from her village once every 100 years. She's one of the women that will be offered up, but she doesn't plan on going quietly.

It's time again for dragon-shifter Laryn to take a bride from the human village. The last thing he expects during the claiming is a sword thrust into his scales. But Roxanne is nothing like any of the brides he's had before. She's trained in the ways of a sword, fiery, and stubborn...all of which is incredibly appealing to the dragon. But Laryn is immortal and he's determined to keep his heart this time so Roxanne's death in 50 years or so doesn't devastate him. Can he resist his bride?

_______________________________________________

I would give this book 4 1/2 stars if I could. I think it's slightly better then Book 1 in the series. I did love how to book checked in with Bastian and Acasia and their young son, Ashrac.

Laryn was kind of the villain of Book 1, since he'd recently lost his bride and was being driven mad with loneliness and heartbreak. I'm glad McClain redeemed him and gave him a true love. Roxanne is a great heroine. She's tough but allows herself to fall in love. I actually really like that Laryn was willing to train her. It showed a high level of respect.

I also really liked Laryn's relationship with Ashrac. It was really cute to see this grumpy old dragon softening his heart to his little boy.

I'll probably read the next book in the series.

I liked this better than the previous book in the series but I'm hard pressed to give a reason why. Maybe because this dragon had been such a shit in the first book that it was nice to see him redeemed. His bride also was more interesting. I knew she would turn into a dragon because that's pretty much the whole point of this series. All four male dragons are going to find mates in a relatively short period of time after millennium of having their brides die. I wasn't bored despite knowing the outcome before getting to the end. Roxanne's metamorphosis is pretty spectacular.

We get to meet the male offspring of Bastian and Acasia which is fun. He plays a pretty important part in this story also.

Dragon shifters? You betcha!

I was looking for something to read when I came across book #1 of this series (FREE) and decided to try it. Not only did I read it through in one day, but I quickly clicked on book #2 to read more of this unusual Dragon shifting romance.

This is totally a new experience for me and have decided that I very much enjoy this writer. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I have been reading her other works under her real name Holly S Roberts.

Off to order book #3 to see what happens next!

Wow. I really liked the first book in this series and this one had a good storyline but I couldn't get past the fact that his normal treatment of brides was to rape them day 1 and wait for them (for years) to forgive them and then fall in love. That's not love, it's Stockholm syndrome. So we need to just think "he talked to this bride first so it's ok now"? This is even more surprising from an author that was an SVU detective. I am going to try the 3rd book and hopefully it is more like the first.

Laryn claims his bride but little does he know she intends to kill him. Roxanne has been training alone all her life. As a chosen bride she knows her fate and wants to make sure no other women have to go through the claiming ceremony. Laryn likes her spunk and decides to train his little warrior. Together they make a good team but Laryn won’t love her because he can’t stand the pain when she dies. But she does get into his heart and also ends up turning dragon so they will be together forever.

I LOVE this series! I loved book one, where we meet Bastien and Acasia. We learned all about the curse Hera has put on them, and because of that curse, only 4 dragons are left. At all! It's sad. And this curse also has them claiming human brides, which cannot produce children, nor do the live long compared to their dragons. It's so sad. But this one, it had me cheering as much or more than Dragons Don't Cry! And can I just say I seriously hope Sarn gets what I think he will get in the next book, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Now, let's talk Roxanne and Laryn.

Roxanne is one of the girls to be sacrificed to the dragon for the bride claiming. But she won't be claimed. She tries to kill the dragon before he even chooses, and then when he stops her assault and flies away with her, she still doesn't give up. She has her sword and she will die but she will make sure the dragon dies with her. She's a strong woman. She thinks that sacrificing virgins to be eaten or worse to dragons is not acceptable. I freaking loved her spunk. She is full of attitude and still has a kind heart. And then, when she meets Acasia, and her family, she realizes the dragons aren't eating them. LOL It's kinda funny, this particular situation. Plus I like that Roxy is just bad ass. Much like Acasia is.

Laryn, well he's complicated, crude, sexy, and down right stubborn to a fault. He will not love his bride. He will use her, and shut himself away, because it hurts too much when they die so quickly. But then he decided he will properly train Roxy like the warrior she should be. She fights like it. But it bites him in the ass, because he falls for her no matter what. But things aren't so easy in the dragon realm. And he doesn't learn his lesson until the end, when something terrible happens to her. No I won't tell you. I loved that he got a little sweeter and a little nicer as Roxy was around, and I love his soft spot for Ash. And I think he's got his hands full with Roxy, so she'll keep him in line :)

I really do love the world the author created. It's amazing, withe different realms and how they work. I also absolutely love the characters. I am completely invested in them and I can't wait to see how things are going to play out, with all that has happened. And I can't wait to see shifters other than dragons come into play as well :) YES!! With that said, 5 Dragon PAWS from me, and I seriously want book three, like tomorrow :) LOL

I actually discovered this book first, but decided to read book 1 in the series first. Sadly, the writing style deteriorated in this book. Almost to a cave-man type talk. Not sure if a new editor was hired or the characters were just being depicted as dummer than those in the first book. Either way, after reading the first book and going directly into this one, I had adjusted to the writing style and it wasn’t a problem.

My complaints from the first book follow over to this one. But thankfully the “earth realm” and characters from the other series by this author are mentioned much less in this book.

The story is even more original than in the first book. I loved the refreshing take on having a dragon take a virgin sacrifice, and the woman turns on the dragon and tries to kill him. The interaction between the two characters is priceless as it’s obvious she is incapable of harming the dragon, and his amused reaction to her attempts. I loved how instead of being upset at her, he embraces her attitude and teaches her to how to be a better warrior.

Again, as with the first book, I wish this story was more appropriate to children because I know it would be hugely popular. As it is, I can only recommend it to adults who enjoy reading about dragons and are interested in an erotica twist.

Technically, this is the second book of the author I've read. The first one was book 1 of the series and like the first one, I enjoyed reading Dragons Don't Love.

Both the heroine and hero matched each other perfectly. The same with Bastian and Acasia (loved that couple). I won't play favorites with them because they're good in their own way.

I liked how the personality of both H/h complements one another. Roxanne a real warrior woman and it's fun to see how she and Laryn interacted. Lots of wit there at the same time you could feel that tension if there's some denial in there.

I'm still sad about the curse set upon Dragons, I still get teary-eyed. I liked how it ended but it took something untowards Roxanne for Laryn to get his head straight. Well, better late than never. I also liked how Roxanne kind of change him in a better version of himself.

I'm looking more forward to the next book in the series especially... well, I won't spoil that part.

I received an arc for a blog tour.

OMG this was one hot cocky dragon! Well he thought he was until he claimed his new bride. These poor dragons have been cursed by Hera, Zeus wife. On the beginning a dragon killed one of her daughter's and she cursed them. They would never find happiness that lasts, they would claim a human bride and she would die leaving them alone for 25 years then it would repeat again. They would love their brides then suffer for 25 years after they died. Very sad for them, so Laryn said he would not love this bride that way when she dies he won't suffer so much. Wrong....this bride is like no other he's ever had! What's he to do? Well if you want to know read this book and find out! Trust me you won't be sorry. This author has a way with her characters.....she matches them perfectly and her word's leave you wanting more. These dragons and the human women they take as bride's will have you crying and laughing. Definitely good reading!

Loved it!!! I've been waiting for a while to read the sequel to Dragons don't cry and I have to say it was definitely worth the wait.
Karyn is extremely arrogant, just like you would expect from a mighty dragon. He has also been very hurt by the death of his previous bride and hasn't been ostracized by his fellow dragon brothers after stealing Acasia. To say that his claiming was unorthodox is saying little. I thought it hilarious that he would take so long to realize he was being attacked by his bride. Roxanne is fierce, stubborn and pretty skilled with a sword. The fact that their wooing consisted in weapon fighting was very different from the first book and very entertaining. I also fell in love with Ashrac, the baby dragon was sooooooo cute!!!
I withdrew a star because of the length of the book, I would have very much enjoyed a longer story. Apart from that, it was perfect :)

Dragon's Don't Love is the second book in the Fire Chronicles series.

It was quick with just over 100 pages. The writing style was engaging, exciting and perfect. I was drawn in right away and I can't wait to read the first book and future books as well.

I went through every emotion. I laughed a lot and cried too. I felt like I was Bipolar with how quickly I bounced from one feeling to the next. This is a book that will be especially appreciated by readers who like to feel when reading (like me).

If you like dragons, kick butt heroines, or great books that can be read quickly, you MUST read this!

I received an ecopy in exchange for my honest opinion. It was phenomenal!

This is book 2 of the Fire Chronicles series, and our focus is on Laryn and Roxanne. You have to give Roxanne credit, she comes out swinging, and doesn't quite stop. She's a force for Laryn to reckon with, and that adds great spice to the book.

If you read book 1, then you were already introduced to Laryn, who is one lonely dragon. His surprise when his bride attacks him, rather than the usual greeting, is tons of fun.

The story in this book gets even better than the first, as Laryn tries to tame his combative bride. It all trails down to a wonderful ending, but you'll have to read the book to find out more.

Okay so in book #1 Dragons Don't Cry we met Laryn who was suffering from the ovrwhelming lonliness that happens after their bride has died. It is all part of the curse. Brilliant curse BTW. However Bastian and Acasia were able to break the curse. Let's see if stubborn, selfish, arrogant Laryn can do the same. He has rules for how he will avoid falling in love this time. Meet Roxy, a warrior determined to kill the dragon on claiming day. Sounds like a good story to curl up with for the weekend to me.

This just keeps getting better!

I am in love with Roxanne! This is a badass chick! A self taught Dragon slayer who has a smart mouth and a warrior's mentality. Laryn resistance a chance of resisting her, even if he is an arrogant butt head. The characterizations are so on point that I am still thinking of them as real people. The plot line flows smoothly and I was never bored for a second. I loved this second book in this series. It is a whole book, no cliffhangers, and I look forward to reading the next one too!

Thank you for my ARC copy. Dragons don't Love was a good love story, Roxy wanted to kill until she fell in love. One dragon cant love because his other wives have died so he can't take the heartbrake again. This was funny until the tears. This is the second book in the series.

Told in he said/she said style, this story can be read as a stand-alone. The story covers the stange mating rituals of dragons and a village that raises dragon brides. In this story Laryn and Roxanne meet at the mate choosing when she tries to kill him.

This is a sweet story with hillarious moments. I give this story 4.5 out of 5 clouds.

Dragons again

Layrn goes to claim his new bride. All of a sudden he has a loop around ankle and a woman jumps on his back and tries to st a b him. She does know this is impossible. So starts the story of Layrn and Rosanna. Great story and again high recommend it. But book s as should be 're as d in order because of the interaction with characters from the previous story.
