“We can forget that we’re both mothers and children. We’re not God—the master of the universe—even though we might subconsciously expect ourselves to be right now. We won’t be impassive in the face of pain and suffering. We can’t have an omniscient read on our babies (or ourselves). We’re not able to perfectly spin the plates or sufficiently meet all the needs of our households in and of ourselves. Moms are impressively strong and capable and intuitive, certainly, but we’re still weak children at the core. We’re still needy little ones growing up in our Father, desperate for his continual love and care. And this is what motherhood—and especially postpartum—teaches us: how to be children again.”

“We can embrace all the beautiful unknowns of postpartum—and the motherhood beyond—because Jesus himself is our security, identity, and joy. Whatever lies ahead, he has already gone before you in both fullness of pain and fullness of pleasure.”

What a wonderful and encouraging gift this book has been to me in these early postpartum weeks! Cradled beautifully highlights Christ’s promises and His unwavering love for moms during this exciting yet vulnerable season. I loved how the author referenced so much Scripture and constantly pointed the reader to God’s Word. Definitely would recommend this book to all new moms!

I felt so seen by this book! I wish I had had it after giving birth to my first two kids. While reading it I had realizations about myself and, more importantly, God. Annie provides such good truths and reminders for postpartum (and parenting little in general). Loved it and highly recommend to postpartum moms.

Oh man… Where do I begin? This book isn’t just for women who are anticipating their next birth or who’ve recently had a baby. I believe that if you had your last child 35 years ago that this book could help you process your postpartum experience and heal a bit. By the grace of God, He brought Annie through these difficult postpartum experiences and gave her the words to share with us, and help us feel less alone in our own postpartum journeys. She encourages us to look to Christ with every painful latch, sleepless night, and hormonal shift—exactly the exhortation I need when I want to focus on my pain in postpartum. This book is beautifully written, and should be a staple for any expecting mother, or spouse or friend who wants to better understand and care for an expecting mother. Could not recommend enough!

This book is so wonderfully sweet and encouraging! It goes into the depths of the hardships of postpartum making me feel so seen in this time, without being overwhelming or taxing. It speaks real spiritual truths - providing both precious reminders of God’s love but also showing it in new ways that I hadn’t thought of in motherhood. I so so recommend this book for anyone during postpartum and will be giving this book to all my new mom friends and family!

Such an encouraging, manageable, and relatable read during postpartum. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of caring for a newborn (feeding, changing, bathing, etc), practical encouragements for that area, and spiritual parallels. I also really appreciated how honest the author is on her difficult postpartum experiences as it made me feel less alone in mine. 💙 Highly, highly recommend.

Wonderful little book to read or give to someone who is freshly post-partum. Annie did a beautiful job of gently bringing us as readers to Christ in the 8 most common tasks that consume a Mom's time after having a baby. This book was a much needed reminder and encouragement to me to continue to expect the Lord's care over me just as I care for my new baby.

If you’re my friend and a soon-to-be first time mom, don’t read this because there’s a 100% chance I’m gifting it to you at your baby shower

Postpartum is a vulnerable, raw, exhausting season. Your heart is bursting with love for a new little person in your arms yet keeping them alive requires giving and giving physically and emotionally. Your spiritual well can dry quickly and you can lose your bearings and wonder at the why of mundane repetition done in an exhausted state. Annie's beautiful book speaks directly into this season. She writes with lovely prose and from personal experience. There is lovely art within the pages making this book a gentle hug and a finger under your chin raising your eyes to Christ.

Every stage of life involves unique blessings and challenges, and nothing reveals this more than the crucible of early parenthood. In this compassionate book for Christian moms, Annie Vanderheiden shows how the intensity of the postpartum experience can lead women into an even deeper relationship with Jesus. She encourages moms that as they deal with physical pain, overwhelming feelings, sleep deprivation, and constant self-sacrifice, God is there with them, caring for them just as they care for their babies.

Each chapter in Cradled focuses on a different routine, such as feeding, changing, sleeping, and soothing babies. Vanderheiden honors these acts of love and provision, and she explores their spiritual significance, showing how Jesus cares for us in similar ways. The author weaves Bible verses into her writing in a natural way, and she writes with a deep perspective of God's presence and care in the mundane moments of motherhood.

Vanderheiden also writes with a posture of grace and humility, sharing vulnerable personal examples of things that were difficult for her in early motherhood. This book is straightforward and honest about difficult realities, instead trying to spiritually bypass or sugarcoat them. Rather than using spirituality as a way to minimize a mother's concerns or discomfort, Vanderheiden helps women integrate the spiritual dimensions of motherhood with their own personal experiences, however complicated they may be.

Sleep-deprived moms will appreciate how short and digestible each chapter is, and the chapters all include thoughtful reflection questions and prayers at the end. The author also includes practical advice in each chapter, suggesting ways that moms can experience Christ's care in tangible ways. For example, she suggests draping an open Bible over the arm of a couch, so that you can read a little bit here and there when you're sitting down with the baby.

Even though parts of this book are specifically for biological mothers, that doesn't need to deter adoptive mothers. The majority of the book focuses on caring for a newborn, not on the experience of childbirth, so adoptive mothers will find that the majority of this book speaks to them. The author also directly acknowledges adoptive mothers in a short note at the end, in which she honors other experiences and challenges that this book doesn't specifically address.

Cradled: Christ's Care for Postpartum Moms is full of encouragement for both new and seasoned mothers alike. I anticipate buying copies of this book to give at baby showers in the future, and I appreciate how deep, practical, and kindhearted every chapter is. This well-written book shares a meaningful perspective on an essential topic, and I highly recommend this book to Christian mothers with new babies.

I received a free copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Lovely book, would easily recommend to other moms in the postpartum season. I’m 4 weeks PP and on my second read-through of this. The author writes in a way that feels very digestible in this season. It’s a brief book, but rich in content, theologically-sound, and helpful in reorienting my heart towards Christ and His compassion towards me… which I need when I’m frustrated and exhausted at 3 a.m feeds. I love the reflection questions and prayer at the end of each section as well. Very well done, and as a bonus, the illustrations are beautiful. 10/10.
