She has everything I’ve ever wanted. First, I’ll take her name. Then, I’ll steal her life…
I turn my head and stare at the woman lying in the hospital bed next to mine. She has long brown hair, high cheekbones and dark eyes. She looks so much like me, we could easily be mistaken for one another. And that’s how we ended up here. I planned it.
Freya has the kind of life that most people would kill for – more money than she knows what to do with and the freedom to spend her days as she chooses. But I don’t think she deserves any of it.
I’ve spent months watching Freya as I clean her huge house and obey her every demand. She thought I was just her cleaner, but she underestimated me. I know her darkest secret – and I’m going to use it to get everything I want.
So while she was unconscious, I stole her name. She has no idea what I’m capable of. Or what I’m going to do next…
From the number one bestselling author Daniel Hurst, The Other Patient is an utterly addictive, nail-biting read packed full of twists that will make you gasp out loud and leave your jaw on the floor. Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, T M Logan and Lisa Jewell.

PUBLISH DATE: July 20, 2026 The Other Patient by Daniel Hurst ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I’ve now read several of Daniel Hurst’s books, and he may be the king of twists you never see coming. Whatever I thought this story was going to be about, I wasn’t even close.
At first, I worried I would get confused because Freya and Iris are mixed up in the hospital and not always using their real identities. The story also moves between past and present timelines. Once I got a few chapters in, though, everything started to click into place and became much easier to follow.
This was a fast-paced thriller that never seemed to slow down. Every time I thought I had things figured out, another revelation sent me in a different direction. Hurst does a great job of keeping the reader guessing.
I also liked that most of the characters were fairly likable and felt more layered than the typical thriller cast.
One of the later twists didn’t completely work for me because it felt a little hard to believe, and I continue to notice a recurring theme in some of the author’s books where women use their bodies as a form of leverage. That’s a trope I personally don’t enjoy.
Even with those minor issues, I had a hard time putting this one down. If you’re looking for a quick, entertaining popcorn thriller packed with surprises, this is a fun read.

Two women, one identity, and a wildly addictive game of deception. Stealing a wealthy woman's identity is easy... until you realize exactly why she was hiding from the world. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Huge thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. You once again handed me a book full of people making catastrophically bad life choices, and naturally, I loved it.
Imagine waking up in a hospital bed only to discover the woman in the bay next to you looks enough like you to steal your identity. That is exactly the unhinged opportunity Iris has been waiting for. For months, she’s been working as a cleaner for the wealthy, reclusive Freya, quietly collecting her secrets and building an elaborate fantasy life. When a serious car accident leaves them both in hospital with severe head injuries and Freya significantly more incapacitated, Iris decides it’s time to commit to the bit. She slips out, arrives at Freya’s secluded mansion, and completely takes over her employer's high-end lifestyle.
But stealing a life turns out to be much easier than keeping it. Iris soon discovers the terrifying reason why Freya hides from the world in the first place, and as Freya begins to recover, a delicious, high-stakes game of psychological cat-and-mouse begins.
What I Loved: Popcorn Thriller Chaos at its Best
If Daniel Hurst invites me into his latest fictional disaster, I am showing up every single time. One thing I always appreciate about his writing is that he never wastes time pretending his books are anything other than wildly entertaining. This is pure, unadulterated popcorn-thriller chaos, and I absolutely devoured it in a single sitting.
The pacing is brilliant. With short chapters and constant cliffhangers, it’s the literary equivalent of someone shaking you awake every six minutes to whisper, "Actually, it gets worse." I kept telling myself "just one more chapter," and accidentally found myself fifty pages later. Hurst has weaponized curiosity here, making it impossible to put the book down.
The dynamic between the two women is wonderfully messy:
1. Iris is the ultimate disaster goblin. She is the exact personality type that hears "don't do that" and immediately starts doing it harder. You absolutely should not root for her, yet you cannot look away because you need to see just how far she will push her luck.
2. Freya rolls in with the energy of someone who has money, dark secrets, and no idea how closely she’s been watched.
Watching the constant shifting of power between them kept me completely hooked. Every time I thought someone had finally gained the upper hand, the rug got yanked out from under me. It’s gloriously manipulative in all the best ways. Underneath all the wild scheming, there’s also a sharp, ugly thread about envy, the kind that grows when you are deeply convinced that someone else is living the life you deserved.
The Reality Check
Was every single twist believable? Absolutely not. There were definitely moments where my brain tried to file a formal complaint with reality. Certain situations operate on the assumption that hospitals, police, and basic human observation skills don't exist.
But honestly? I didn't care even a little bit. About halfway through, I stopped asking logistical questions, gave my rolling eyeballs a rest, and climbed aboard the nonsense train. Sometimes a thriller's only job is to entertain you so completely that you forget to question the logistics, and The Other Patient understood the assignment perfectly. It’s a romp into "What if?" on every single page.
Final Verdict:
Is this high literature? No. Is it the book equivalent of sitting on your couch with a giant bowl of snacks while yelling "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" at fictional people for several hours? Very much yes. It’s a fast, addictive, off-the-wall escape into the throes of madness.
A wildly entertaining thriller filled with deception, obsession, and characters making one terrible decision after another. I had a great time with it and couldn't stop turning the pages.
Freya and Iris look enough alike to be mistaken for each other, and apparently one of them saw that fact and thought, "Excellent. Time to commit to the most unhinged life plan imaginable." The second this book opened with two women in hospital beds looking like bargain-bin twins separated by a deeply concerning amount of obsession, I knew I was either about to have a great time or a ridiculous time. Turns out the answer was yes.
What really got me was how aggressively committed Iris is to the bit. This woman has been cleaning Freya's house, studying her life, collecting secrets, and quietly building a fantasy so elaborate it should qualify as a second full-time job. Meanwhile Freya is walking around with the energy of someone who has money, problems, and absolutely no idea how many people are watching her. It creates this wonderfully messy dynamic where neither woman is entirely trustworthy, but both are fascinating to follow.
And that's where this book got me. Every time I decided who the villain was, Daniel Hurst would casually slide another piece of information across the table and suddenly I'd be questioning my entire investigation. Not because the book is especially subtle, but because everyone here is lying with such confidence that eventually you start doubting your own name.
Spending time with Freya and Iris feels like being trapped between two people who keep insisting they're the reasonable one while actively making the worst decisions available to them. Iris especially has the exact personality type that hears "don't do that" and immediately starts doing it harder. I couldn't fully root for her, but I absolutely couldn't stop watching her. She's the thriller equivalent of seeing someone push a shopping cart downhill toward traffic and thinking, "Well, this is going to end badly, but now I need to know how badly."
The pacing is pure popcorn-thriller chaos. Short chapters. Constant cliffhangers. The literary version of somebody shaking you awake every six minutes to whisper, "Actually, it gets worse." I kept reading one more chapter and then accidentally found myself fifty pages later. This book knows exactly what it's doing, and what it's doing is weaponizing curiosity.
Now, did every single thing feel plausible? Absolutely not. There were moments where my brain tried to file a formal complaint with reality. Certain characters survive things that made me stare into the middle distance. Certain situations operate on the assumption that hospitals, police, and basic human observation skills simply don't exist. But honestly? About halfway through I stopped asking logistical questions and climbed aboard the nonsense train. The conductor was handing out twists and I was having a surprisingly good time.
What surprised me most was that underneath all the scheming, there's a sharp little thread about envy. Not the glamorous kind. The ugly kind. The kind that grows when you're convinced somebody else has the life you deserved. Neither woman is particularly innocent, and that keeps the story from becoming too simple. Everybody wants something. Everybody's hiding something. Everybody's making terrible choices in pursuit of both.
By the end I was equal parts entertained, exasperated, and fully invested in seeing which disaster goblin would come out on top. Is The Other Patient high literature? Absolutely not. Is it the book equivalent of sitting on your couch with a giant bowl of snacks while yelling "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" at fictional people for several hours? Very much yes. I devoured it. 3.5 stars, rounded firmly in the direction of "that was ridiculously fun."
Whodunity Award: For Turning a Hospital Mix-Up Into the Most Aggressive Game of Identity Theft I've Read All Year
And a huge thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC. You once again handed me a book full of people making catastrophically bad life choices, and naturally I read the whole thing in one sitting.
Imagine waking up in a hospital only to discover the woman in the next bed looks enough like you to steal your identity. That's exactly what Iris has been planning all along. After months of working as Freya's cleaner and quietly collecting every secret she could, she sees the perfect opportunity to take the wealthy woman's name, her life, and everything that comes with it. Unfortunately for Iris, stealing someone's identity turns out to be much easier than keeping it. And watching the two women circle each other while the lies pile higher is exactly the kind of delicious mess I expect whenever I pick up one of this author's books.
One thing I always appreciate about this author is that he never wastes time pretending his books are anything other than wildly entertaining. This one hooked me immediately, and I flew through it because every chapter ends with another reason to say, "Well, now I have to know what happens." Iris is one of those characters you absolutely should not root for, yet somehow you keep turning the pages to see how much farther she'll push her luck. The constant shifting of power between her and Freya kept the story moving, and every time I thought someone had finally gained the upper hand, the rug got yanked out from under me. It was gloriously manipulative in all the best ways.
Was every twist believable? Probably not. Did I care? Not even a little. Sometimes a thriller's only job is to entertain you so completely that you forget to question the logistics, and this one absolutely understood the assignment. If you're looking for a fast, addictive read full of deception, identity swaps, and characters making increasingly questionable life choices, this is another solid entry from the author. Four stars from me, and proof yet again that if Daniel Hurst invites me into his latest disaster, I'm showing up every single time. Many thanks to Bookouture for this early copy that will publish July 20, 2026.
The Other Patient is a wildly written off-the-wall escape into the throws of madness. Daniel Hurst writes for the sake of keeping his readers intensely entertained even if the storyline tips off the track into the town of Unbelievability. Hurst has long been known for that. Give your rolling eyeballs a rest and just embrace wonky with a capital W.
Two women don't walk into a bar but instead wake up in the hospital with beds alongside one another. They've been in a car accident and seem to be suffering from head injuries. One of them was driving. One of them was the passenger.
Then Iris, the household cleaner, looks over at her employer, Freya, and devises a plan. Freya's head injury seems to be far more intense. Iris, who looks so much like Freya, decides to take on her boss' identity. Why not? Iris arrives at Freya's mansion and takes over. She's very familiar with the surroundings since she's worked there as the cleaner for some time. Freya lived in seclusion by herself with no family members on the horizon. No one ever came to the mansion except for deliveries.
A tiny problem arises: What to do when Freya recovers? Oh, Iris has that covered. Freya will find herself in new surroundings as well. It certainly won't be to Freya's liking though. And as Iris roams through this high-end lifestyle, she'll find that there is a reason why Freya hides from the world. Iris will come face-to-face with that reality......and that's when the trauma rears its head big time.
The Other Patient is a quick read with short chapters. It is far from heavy lifting. You'll be chanting, "How can that possibly happen?" Oh, but it does and it will throughout. But that's the fun of it all. This is not real life presented to you by Daniel Hurst. It's a romp into What if? on every page. So just go with the flow and check out where Iris and Freya will turn up by the end.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Bookouture and to Daniel Hurst for the opportunity.
I think I’ve said this before, but it still holds. If Daniel Hurst writes it, I’m reading it.
The Other Patient is exactly the kind of fast, addictive thriller that works as a perfect palate cleanser. It feels like a movie you throw on and instantly get pulled into. There’s barely any warm-up. The story starts moving right away, and Hurst keeps tightening the screws the entire time.
We follow Freya, a wealthy woman living a very isolated life, and Iris, her house cleaner. After an accident, Freya wakes up in the hospital, and suddenly everyone is calling her Iris. From there, things spiral in a way that makes you question what’s actually real and who you can trust.
I had my theories early on, felt pretty confident about them, and then around the 60% mark, everything shifted. That’s where it really hooked me. I went from thinking I had it figured out to not knowing whose version of events I could trust at all.
There’s definitely some unreliable narration at play, and the dual POV structure between Iris and Freya works really well for building tension without giving too much away. I’m not going to spoil how it all connects, but it kept me second-guessing the whole time.
Twisty, tense, and very much in Hurst’s lane. Solid ending and an easy read that delivers exactly what it promises.
Thank you to Daniel Hurst, NetGalley, and Bookouture for this ARC.
Title: The Other Patient Author: Daniel Hurst Publisher: Bookouture Genre: Psychological Thriller Pub Date: July 20, 2026 My Rating: 4.5 Stars Pages: 323 When Freya wakes up in the hospital, the other patient in the next bed looks like her! Iris has been working as Freya's cleaner and planning to take over her identity.
Iris is obsessed with Freya her wealthy employer. She is willing to do whatever it takes to steal her life.
This was a fast-paced psychological thriller packed with manipulation, deception, and plenty of twists.Story starts out somewhat slowly but kicks in closer to the end!
I am a big Danny fan. He is an entertaining writer; this is my thirty-fifth thriller! I am always ready to read his next story! I never really know what his group of psychos will have in store for me! This story indeed had a bunch of craziness! I went into it with no expectations other than expecting a surprise as I do I love this author and his stories. I have several that rank 'favorites' - yep! This one made my list!!! Although I am always expecting a surprise, this one had a surprise that out did my surprise expectation! Needless to say, Danny did NOT disappoint.
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-Galley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for July 20, 2026.
This is given to me as a arc to reveiw. Oh my gosh this book is so good. So many twist and turns. So there is a girl that is rich and 1 that's poorer and works as her cleaning lady. She catches a ride home but the one girl had a panic attack when she gets a messege saying her x is out of jail. They have a car accident. End up in the hospital so this is where all the good stuff happens. The one girl takes the others name. The boyfriend take the other girl locks her in the basement saying she is crazy ect. The one girl is living it up in fancy house finds out the 1 girl was running from her x. The locked up girl stole the key got out runs home and finds her x is in her house looking for her. He sees her tries to / her and then the other girl that is pretending to be the other girl / him. So now that girl has to explain why they did this to her and everything long story short she gets wiped out as well and now she has to take care of business.
This is very well written fast paced that you cannot leave alone. You need to find out what happens and the twist of how she got rich ect love the secrets and lies. This should be made as a movie. Also if you like Freda mcfadden books you'll Def like this it's kinda the same way written but intense. Loved this !!!
5 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy of The Other Patient by Daniel Hurst. Publication Date: July 20, 2026.
This was one of those books that grabbed me from the very first chapter and didnt let up until the last.
The premise alone is chilling—a woman becomes obsessed with her wealthy employer and is willing to do whatever it takes to steal her life. This was a fast-paced psychological thriller packed with manipulation, deception, and plenty of twists.
I loved how the story was told through multiple perspectives allowing you to see the situation from different angles. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another twist came along and proved me wrong. This book had my head spinning.
The characters were complex, flawed, and completely entertaining to follow. While I didn't necessarily like all of them, I was invested in finding out what happens next.
Daniel Hurst has a knack for creating addictive domestic thrillers, and this one was no exception and you'll definitely want to add this one to your TBR.
Thank you again NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy of The Other Patient.
I am a great fan of Daniel Hurst's novels but this one was a book of two halves for me. What I loved was that it had short chapters, each focusing on one or other of the two main female characters. Each chapter ended on a mini cliffhanger, which kept me reading on long into the night. There were numerous twists and surprises, many of which I hadn't predicted. What I wasn't so keen on were the number of really far-fetched situations that spoiled it for me and stretched credibility too far. The lost key, A female running barefoot for miles clad only in a scanty medical gown. Someone walking over a smashed door as it crunched underfoot - still barefoot. Having a major knife injury and being left for dead but then getting a lift in a car with the driver not noticing the blood stained clothes and none of that blood transferring to the car seat! I had to just put reality aside and enjoy the madness of it all and read to the end to see what the outcome was. This won't deter me from reading more of Daniel's work as I've loved everything he has written so far. This one was just a bit too much to take seriously. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an early copy. This is my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of this title. The Other Patient is built on short chapters, though the pacing runs quite slow. The story alternates between Freya and Iris's perspectives, with Iris quickly emerging as the more dominant narrator. She definitely comes off as suspicious throughout, while her boyfriend Isaac tries to keep her in check. Her edge grounds the book, which helps, since there are long stretches focused on describing the character’s thoughts and movements rather than dialogue and that drags the momentum down. Despite the slow burn, the payoff salvaged the read. Hurst drops in some good twists just as the domestic details start to feel tedious, and the pacing finally snaps into high gear in the last ten chapters. The ending pulls everything together in a satisfying way, leaving me glad I stuck with it to the final page. It requires some patience to get through the middle, but the conclusion delivers exactly what the story needed. If you love unexpected twists and don’t mind a slow burn this book is for you! #NetGalley #TheOtherPatient
The Other Patient is one of those books that completely hooked me from the first few chapters. Is it going to win any literary awards for its writing? Probably not. But honestly, that’s not what this kind of thriller is trying to do.
What it does deliver is pure entertainment. The pace is relentless, the chapters fly by, and I found myself constantly saying “just one more chapter” because I had to know what happened next. Every time I thought I’d figured things out, another twist came along and proved me wrong.
The premise is deliciously dark, and the story keeps piling on the surprises right up to the end. Some of the twists require a little suspension of disbelief, but I was having far too much fun to care. This is the definition of a popcorn thriller: addictive, dramatic, and impossible to put down.
If you’re looking for a clever, fast-paced psychological thriller packed with shocking reveals and plenty of jaw-dropping moments, this is a great choice. Fans of twisty domestic thrillers will have a blast with this one.
Wow. Just wow. I thought I knew what to expect from a Daniel Hurst thriller, but The Other Patient completely blew me away. The dynamic between the protagonist (the seemingly invisible cleaner) and Freya (the woman who has everything) sets up the perfect cat-and-mouse game. The premise of stealing someone's identity right from the hospital bed next to them kept my heart in my throat. The pacing is absolutely relentless—every time I told myself "just one more chapter," I ended up reading for another hour. It’s dark, highly addictive, and features an ending that genuinely made me gasp out loud. If you love Freida McFadden or fast-paced psychological thrillers where no one can be trusted, put this at the very top of your TBR pile.
📚I was able to read an advanced copy of title thanks to NetGalley, Daniel Hurst and Bookouture📚 📚All reviews and opinions are entirely my own📚
Thank you to Daniel Hurst, NetGalley, and Bookouture for this ARC.
My rating: 3.8 ⭐️
Concise, clear writing blends in with twisted motive after motive in this book. You think you know the end-game just for it to flip around and surprise you.
The dual POVs leave you breadcrumbs about their personalities, though it does get repetitive when each chapter ends on almost the same line. The chapters are short, so I read the entire book in one sitting, just to see if my theories were correct.
Both characters have this distorted versions of thought about themselves, that at the end I just did not root for anyone. And some of the situations happening could just not happen in a real event, not without some consequences to body and health.
But if you just try to ignore the logic part of your brain, the book is a quick, entertaining read.
This was one intense read! I was captivated from start to finish with the crazy storyline and I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. And why?? I raced through this book the same way my fat cat eats his food. Devoured it! I was a little disappointed that the character I was rooting for didn't win, but at the same time, I didn't like any of them, so it wasn't that big of a deal. I was also hoping for a little more action at the end. Hurst usually delivers some OMG twists, but nothing shocked me to the point of being slack jawed. Still a fun and entertaining read though! As always, I look forward to what he'll come up with next. And I would definitely recommend!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for granting me a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with an ARC!
This was my second book by Daniel Hurst, and it definitely won't be my last. From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked and found myself constantly trying to figure out what was really going on.
The pacing was incredibly fast, making this one of those books that's nearly impossible to put down. Every time I thought I had everything figured out, another twist came along and proved me wrong. The surprises kept coming, and the suspense never let up.
This was a thoroughly entertaining read, and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you're a fan of fast-paced psychological thrillers with plenty of twists and turns, this is one worth picking up. I can't wait to read more from Daniel Hurst in the future.
“The Other Patient” was my fourth Daniel Hurst book. I’m not sure this is the author for me. Although his book contained many of the features I love (short chapters, limited POV, and a fast pace, I struggled with the awkward dialogue, lack of use of contractions and flat characters. There were some good plot twists, and I read it in about three hours - so if you’re looking for a quick action packed, light summer read, this could be up your alley. Publication date 7/20/2026. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Daniel Hurst for a digital ARC for my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was classic Daniel Hurst- fast paced, twisty, impossible to put down. The story moves between two main characters and dual timelines but flows well and is easy to follow. I flew through this book in a couple days, constantly needing to know what would happen next, as is typical with his books! A little far fetched at times but that’s what makes it fun/interesting to read. If you enjoy suspenseful psychological thrillers with plenty of surprises, this one won’t disappoint!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC in return for my honest review.
I didn’t really enjoy this. It was a slow read, and while I get that it’s fiction, some elements were a bit too out there. For example, one character ran across town several miles … barefoot … and then a bit later a character travels the other direction across town with a serious wound in them. So serious that they were presumed dead, but then rode part of the way in someone else’s car but magically didn’t transfer any blood to the seat.
Freya is rich and lives in a perfect home. Iris is her cleaner. They also look very similar. So as Freya wakes in a hospital bed she is stunned to hear the staff referring to her as Iris. And why is Iris in the next bed not correcting them.
Is Iris coveting Freya’s millionaire lifestyle and is this there chance to get away with it. But both women hold secrets. And will those secrets put them in danger.
Another fast paced read from the master of storytelling.
I am so happy to have found Daniel Hurst as an author! The Other Patient was full of twists and turns which kept me guessing and was a quick read. It did take me a bit for some reason with the POV chapters between past/present with the hospital role switch but I did get there :) If you love a thriller that keeps you guessing, The Other Patient is it (as are other Daniel Hurst books)! Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. All opinions are my own. Expected publication 20 Jul 26.
I really enjoyed this twisted thriller. Every character was devious and scheming. I thought I knew where the story was going but I was so wrong. The story was riveting until the very last page. Throughout the book I wasn't sure who to believe Freya or Iris. These two characters were both ruthless and cunning, both determined to get what they wanted no matter the cost. A really enjoyable twisted read.
“The Other Patient” by Daniel Hurst is a twisty, addictive thriller packed with sneaky deception and secrets. The tension builds steadily, keeping me turning the pages, and the twists kept me guessing. If you love psychological thrillers full of manipulation, lies, and unexpected reveals, this one is definitely worth picking up!
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of Daniel Hurst’s newest book.
Two main characters.. one living in a large house and one being their cleaner. Starts with an accident and one pretending to be the other. Lots of twists and couldn’t see where the story was going.. making it a page turner.
Read it in less than 24 hours and can’t wait for the next. 5 stars for me ⭐️
The Other Patient by Daniel Hurst is a gripping medical thriller that keeps you guessing right up to the end. The twists are well-crafted and genuinely surprising — I didn’t see them coming. I finished it in two days, which says it all. Highly recommend for fans of psychological thrillers.
Thank for NetGalley for this ARC. This is maybe my 4th read by Daniel Hurst and I just love his books! This one kept me reading. I liked the POV and past and present short chapters. Lots of twists throughout the entire book. Very quick read and also hard to put down.
Great thriller with lots of twists and turns! From the start of the book, I was on the edge of my seat. The ending was completely unexpected. The entire book had me wanting to read more
Wow! An incredible thriller. The level of trauma sets the tone for this book, then it continues with twists and turns that keep you guessing right up until the end. I read this book in just 2 days, could not put it down and read it long into the night. Brilliant, highly recommended.
Oh what a twisted web of deceit. Hurst also gives us page turners and fun psychological drama and this one fit the bill. I look forward to each plot in his books.
