2025 January 16th Review

EN After being away from "Tokyo Ghoul:RE" for over a year, I decided to re-read the last volume I had finished to refresh my memory and get back into the story.

My thoughts on this volume remain largely the same. I still find it challenging to keep track of the characters because the author alternates between using their first names, last names, or even a mix of both. This inconsistency makes it harder to follow the narrative, especially in a manga with such a large cast of characters.

As a result, I often have to pause and look up who each person is. However, once you start to piece together the relationships and identities, the story proves to be quite solid.

Overall, it was a decent read, and I’m excited to see where the story goes from here.

--

2023 November 9th Review
Tokyo Ghoul is the only manga where I really struggle to keep up with all the characters names references.

I'm really bad at memorizing Japanese names and the dialogs keep referring to names that I have to Google in order to know who is who and stay within context. Which is pretty annoying.

Other than that, it's a pretty good manga with lots of action and a solid narrative.

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

In the sequel series to Tokyo Ghoul, Haise Sasaki has been tasked with teaching his special squad of half-ghouls how to be outstanding Investigators, but this is complicated by the troublesome personalities of his subordinates and his own uncertain grasp of his Ghoul powers. Will he and the members of his squad become heroes or monsters, taken out by the other squads in the Commission of Counter Ghoul...?!

The plot of this volume is pretty thin from the CCG perspective... Investigations start and so ideas are thrown around. It's clearly setup for the next volume... Woven into that setup though is the rebirth of a ghoul lord... someone we ALL want to see come back and take action but no one more than Kanae, our obsessed Rose servant. I found this development slow, but also seductive and I was amazed at who suggested it all! I knew she wasn't good but I didn't think she was so evil either...

Tension wise I would LOVE to have more developed about what is going on with Haise... I sort of get it but I would want more to cement it in. Perhaps this is where knowing him from the previous series would be helpful for this story. I was pretty excited to understand the plan proposed to Kanae and to know more details of what would help... Also with the moral dilemma presented for Kanae I want to know if he'd really turn on the family...

And the art... was OF COURSE GORGEOUS! Okay, okay I'm sure you are sick of me fangirling over the art... but it is truly superb (sorry had to gush one more time!) During the investigation bits of course its more static. I do appreciate that even though more investigators are added all the time I can keep them straight visually... I don't get confused which is pretty essential with so many characters. But the art GOES MEGA TIME with Kanae and his emotional response... then a battle starts and WOW... I am certainly starting to really appreciate the battles.

This may APPEAR to be a throw away volume with its slow and steady build up... but I felt like the resurrection of a ghoul lord is a pretty HUGE thing and it is done so, so well among the going ons of the investigators. The thing is our mangaka does a great job shaking things up and keeping circumstances changing... but you need time to adjust and meanwhile the villains are getting things done... that is the case in the volume and boy is it fascinating!!

At first I wondered if anything was going to happen in this volume... until suddenly I realized it has been happening! Tokyo Ghoul: RE is thick with characters and complex up the wazoo and while this takes page space to layout it always delivers!! As it does in this volume with a revitalized player that has been out of the spotlight...!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⋆ ⋆⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

There was a little too much going on in this volume for me to keep all the details straight. A lot of new characters mixing with old ones which could get a bit confusing at times. Although, there is definitely something brewing which I am pretty sure will be a lot of fun! Still really liking this series, but it just got a bit convoluted in this volume.

Also, I am still waiting for more to happen with Saiko, I really like her character for some reason. There seems to be a little hint thrown in for some possible developments, so I am looking forward to seeing what happens with her next!

Also, Uta was in this volume and I just really love him!

Review for vol. 5 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This volume feels very much like a transition book, things happened here but there is barely any conclusion nor process (there is the crisis in a certain household, but I don't care very much about it, frankly), but I'm glad to see Master Shu (he went insane, OMG!) and Uta in all his strange, creepy glory. I love this series so much!!!!

I'm so excited for all the og characters to start getting involved! I'm also really glad I read the light novels, because of how much Chie Hori is in RE. I'm ready for Uta to make these masks and Tsukiyama to be his weirdo self again. It's going to be great. Now I just want Kaneki back, but I know if that does happen it probably won't happen until the more middle/end of the series.

Definitely the best volume of the series so far!

The main focus of vol. 4 is Shu Tsukiyama and how he is still struggling to deal with the loss of Kaneki. We see him on the verge of despair and spiralling into depression but thanks to Kanae Von Rosewald (an orphan who was taken in by the Tsukiyama family as a servant).
Their loyalty towards Shu is unwavering and even slightly fanatical at times, and thanks to Shu's "little mouse" (Chie Hori from first series) who informs Kanae that Kaneki is still alive but due to memory loss is now a Ghoul Investigator known as Haise Sasaki, and having shown Shu some photographs as evidence, Shu quickly finds he has a new lease of life and will do anything to get time alone with Kaneki again.

Elsewhere we see the introduction of a (new)? character - Shiki Kijima, an Assistant Special Investigator who is renowned for his sadistic torturing methods on ghouls...who has been hired to work with Sasaki on the Rose Case (to find out which ghouls are connected to the Rosewald family).

There was a lot of action (as always) in this volume and I personally thought this storyline was stronger - I didn't find the action scenes were overly-long or confusing, I'm really interested to find out about Tsukiyama and Kaneki's future relationship (I'm guessing eventually he will remember he's Kaneki), Shirazu using his new Nutcracker quinque, the relationship between Mutsuki and the Torso (eek!) and just about Urie in general...I'm not sure why but I'm not ruling him out becoming a villain....and of course...there's Uta...and the whole clan at Antieku who are just about to be reunited with Tsukiyama.

Ah, really excited to carry on with this series now after the disappointing third volume...

TOKYO GHOUL RE vol. 4

For some reason I just can't get into Tokyo Ghoul Re like I did the original series, but saying that, this is by far the best volume so far.

It mainly focuses on Shu and his depression. After believing Ken Kaneki was dead he just couldn't go on living anymore. So this time, the "mouse" has given Shu's right hand man the tools to make him come back. With Shu ready to to get his friend/lover/creepy obsession of Kaneki back what will he do to do it? On top of that Rose, the kidnappers, make their move but the CGC is on it and Kaneki and his team are lethal now.

Overall, this is pretty good. I liked the focus on Shu and getting to the point of getting out Kaneki back. The CGC is flushed out more, and I did enjoy the main core more this time around. I'm not digging a lot of the side characters and feel the author introduces so many for almost no reason other than he could. The art remains strong, and while I don't love some of the character designs looking too similar, the actual battles are getting better and better.

While not at a 4 yet, it's an improvement over volume 1-3. A 3.5 out of 5.

SPOILER

Rasanya agak males gitu, bayar 55rb buat satu komik :))
Masih teringat zaman dulu harga komik cuma 3800 rupiah.

Anyway.

While there were a little too many plotlines for my liking I still really enjoyed this book. I’m happy to see Shu and more about his backstory. He’s even more of a crazy fucker. We got a cute Christmas short and a new character named Hairu who’s cute and awesome. Touka is gonna murder Shu in the book.

Warnings: body horror, physical violence, gore, PTSD

With the success of the Auction Raid, the investigators get a promotion, and it is especially a win for Mutsuki, who jumped two ranks. Now, the Quinxes are being teamed up with another squad to track down the Rose, members of the Rosenwald family who were evidenced to be present during the auction raid. Haise is looking into his past, as the gift of the mask leads him to Uta, and he considers a new approach to how the Quinxes should investigate. He is also the one who is interrogating Hinami, who keeps referring to him as 'older brother' because she sees shades of Kaneki in him. Shirazu, meanwhile is still traumatized from his kill of the Nutcracker, and he is having complicated feelings about it (primarily that ghouls could even have human-like desires), which means he is hesitant to use the quinque (made from her kagune) that he got. Urie is still Urie, hyper-competitive, and disdainful of everyone. On the ghoul side, Tsukiyama Shuu finally comes back on the scene, after Kanae thinks over how to heal him from his sickness. Kaneki being alive is a boost of energy for Shuu, even if he can't remember him, but he is adamant on bringing his memories back. His wish for more time with Haise means Kanae goes to some extreeeeeme lengths to eliminate the 'obstructions'.

While this volume isn't the explosive action fest like the last one, there are some interesting battles here, too. But it is also about taking a pause, reviewing the characterizations and character relationships. Mado's feelings about Hinami being in Cochlea, one of the Ghoul investigators who tortures one of the captured Roses and puts that video up for the Rosenwald family to see, leading to us seeing the dynamic between them, and Haise's thoughts on the matter, even the simple scene of the Quinces going to Uta to get masks made, Hori taunting Kanae - all of them enhanced the storytelling. There are several new characters introduced here, too, and while it is getting increasingly difficult to keep track of who is who, it is still making for an interesting tapestry of a plot.

Man, I’m not sure I care about these new characters at all. I mean, the Qx team is quite something despite them being so young. But I think we don’t really have time to dig up in everyone’s past, reasons and intentions. And the inconsistent art and character design doesn’t really help at all.

Let's just say they’ve suffered, both ghouls and humans. And they’re constantly against each other, whether that is for vengeance, or just because they cannot forgive and move on with their lives.

Anyway, in this volume we finally see what happened to my dear Shuu and boy, it hurt like hell. Imagine thinking that the love of your life (yes, I fully believe he is in love with Kaneki) is dead and then, two years later, you see them on the street, with a lost memory –they don’t remember who you are or what you meant to them. Man, I truly feel for Shuu and Hinami. They both lost Kaneki and we clearly see how deep that wound was.
