Thank you SO much to Charlène Boutin for the opportunity to read this as an ARC! I was so excited by the premise of this story as a huge gamer myself, and I loveeee the aspect that they're working in game development.
This story is incredibly heartfelt and emotional. Even though the timeline spans only a couple of days, I became instantly attached to Nick and Dominique. They start out completely misunderstanding each other, but the way Dominique opens up to Nick over the course of the Game Jam is beautifully paced and deeply moving.
Nothing felt rushed or overwhelming, and the emotional payoff near the end actually had me bursting into tears. It’s a wonderful story that I can't recommend enough. 5 stars all around!

I enjoyed this read. The book has so some serious tropes please read the trigger warnings. This story displays a certain view regarding alcoholism and how it might be interpreted from the outside looking in. Not just for the individual but for those whom they love. This was such a great story. The characters were difficult to not love. The patient, care & love that some are to able display for the love of others is a hope to some that life can someday change. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Took about a day and I definitely recommend.

July 10, 2026Happy Publication Day!! Thank you again for another opportunity to have read this ARC!! You have done it again. This book brings us into the world of game development which is quite fascinating. This book follows the story of Nick and Dom and their relationship over a short period of time in a Game Jam setting. Hate to lovers, workplace romance, forced proximity and lots of big feels. As always the writer grabs the attention of the reader from page one, I just couldn’t put this one down. Highly recommend!!

Absolutely thrilled to have been able to ARC read this story. I enjoyed this book so much. Immediately pulled in from the start and completely invested in the characters and their stories. The way this was so well written is chefs kiss! I will definitely be back for more. Please tell me there will be more.

I loved this story so much and devoured it so quickly. Dominique and Nick have a misunderstanding right from the beginning, that has them hate each other. The behind the scenes aspect of gaming developing is what sucked me right in. I'm a huge gamer and it's fun seeing the dynamic. The whole enemies to lovers and forced proximity just made it that much better! They worked so well together and he actually really did care about her a lot. I felt so bad for the situation with Dominique's father, alcoholism is a horrible thing to deal with. It was just an amazing story all the way through.

I don’t know much about video games but I really enjoyed this story and the game jam setting. Despite the short timeline, Game Jam was full of so much depth and self realization. I couldn’t put it down! I love Dom and Nick so much and am grateful for the opportunity to read their story.

Let me start off by saying I know nothing about game/software designing or development.
However you do not need to have a grasp on the techy gaming world to enjoy this book! And I ate this one up!
48hrs- that's all you get to create the ultimate game in a competition full of other talented game designers. So when Dominique's friends urge her to go with them for a weekend of creative freedom, fun & healthy competition, all she can think is it'd be a nice break from her reality & the ultimate bonus prize if they win. As someone who rarely gets out for fun, barely leaves home for more than a day & practically never sees her friends & to top it off, what even is dating?! Her sole focus has been taking care of her dad. But the thing about suffering in silence, is that no one knows your actually suffering- not even your friends.
Deciding to give herself just the weekend to spend time with friends doing what she loves most, but she discovers there's a last min change up to their crew. The catch? A new guy named Nick is joining their team. As luck would have it, Dominique actually knows the man & she can't stand him.
In a very enemies to lovers fashion, Dominique met "Nick" years ago at her 1st industry job, only back then he went by his full name, Dominic.
Fast forward she realizes the same guy that made her days hell, will not only be working on the same project with her- AGAIN- but is now spending the whole weekend together.
In hopes of being able to finally relax & get away from the stress of her alcoholic father, Dominique tries to pour all her focus into this game jam competition, but that's hard to do when you have a hot broody man looking over your shoulder.
THE TENSION... starts to become unbearable.
As if the universe has other plans not only are Nick & Dom forced to sit next to each other, but it seems there was a lil mix up with room assignments... meaning 1 room & 1 BED👀. Even though she cant help but feel attracted to Nick & all his Greek godliness, Dom still cant get over the past. With Nick's bad attitude, constant need to "criticize" her work & just overall asshole-ness.
Though often times things can feel different in the light of day, & that's all the conFIRMation🍆🥵Dom needs when waking up next to a sexy, shirtless Nick.
The more time Dom spends with Nick, the more she realizes that he's not the same guy she thought he was all those years ago. Sometimes it really does take time to grow up to realize how you treat people & with Nick, he was told that his blunt, direct, not so savory personality isn't the way to get the girl.
Considering this book was only little over 200pgs, C.B really packed it in with this story. In addition of adding the heavy theme of alcoholism/alcoholic abuse as a way of coping w/ grief/loss of a loved one, I thought she really took the time, care & sensitivity on the topic as well as highlighting the POV of the care taker, or person who is trying to take care of someone whose sick.
I honestly really enjoyed this story more than I thought I would & I absolutely love being surprised👏🏽! I'm not sure if the author has a background in game development but you can tell that it was thoroughly written in a way that was understandable to the reader, and well researched/ knowledgeable with the tech lingo in the industry to authentic & flushed out. The gaming theme felt like a fresh take on a contemporary romance & I LOVED that it was a different!

Taking back your life
Dominique "Dom" is leaving home for a 2-day competition with her coworkers. She is terrified of leaving her father alone for these two days but she needs some time away.
Two days with good friends creating a video game. The winning group gets a weeks vacation. Turns out worrying about her father isn't her only obstacle. One of their teammates was unable to come and there was a last minute change.
Dominic "Nick" has been doing these competitions for a while and has no issues jumping in at the last min. Can't have a video game without the artist.
Imagine Dom's surprise at seeing someone she butted heads with in the past. One she is certain hates her and finds her work lacking.
I loved the tension in this story. The fact that they accidentally ended up assigned the same room was perfection. Exhausted and without options they share the bed. These two were so confusing in their feelings and I'm glad we had the dual timeline so we saw why them meeting again was so weird.
This is a fantastic second chance story. Not just a second chance for Dom and Nick. Dom has kept herself closed off because of her Dad and how his affliction has ruined friendships and relationships in the past.
I loved reading as they went through making the game and having to do fixes down to the wire. There is so much going on but it all works together.
This story is filled with growth and choosing yourself especially when it's hard because the best may just be right at your fingertips.

The 'gamer story' is so genuine and emotional. I cried. Despite the relatively short timeline, I was completely captivated by Dominique and Nick. What begins as a misunderstanding (perhaps helped along by a little neurospiciness) develops into a beautifully believable enemies-to-lovers romance.
Watching Dominique learn to open up and trust Nick was one of my favorite parts of the story. She slowly realizes that he's someone who won't judge her, and that emotional journey felt so authentic. As someone who deeply relates to being the caretaker and constantly putting others first, I found Dominique especially easy to connect with. It was heartwarming to see her find someone who genuinely wanted to care for her in return and make her a priority. By the end, I was definitely wondering where I could find my own Nick.
At just under 300 pages, the story moves at a brisk pace, but nothing felt rushed or overlooked. This was my first by Charlene Boutin and I am hooked. I never expected to relate to a character as much as I related to Dom. Her family life had some similarities to mine and almost instantly had an emotional connection to her.
This story follows Dom, a video game sound artist who also happens to be her father’s care taker. Between work and homelife, she doesn’t have much free time. When her friends invite her to go to a 2 day game jam, she’s hesitant to say yes. Knowing she needs this, she reluctantly goes. When one of her friends is unable to make it, she never expects a villain from her past to show up and be the fourth member on the team. Having a hard time of letting go of their past and the things Nick said to her, Dom is forced to “put on her big girl pants” and be civil with the one person she never wanted to see. When Nick shows up to the game jam he never expected her to be there. The one thing he could never have back then. Never being one to sugar coat it, Nick is stuck between wanting the team to win and not making the one girl he’s always wanted, hate him even more.
Can these 2 put their differences aside and work together to build the best video game ever? Can Dom finally let herself be happy with wanting something more than what she’s been dealt in life? Can Nick learn to not be so harsh and let someone else in who could understand why he is the way he is? Read Game Jam to find out! Out NOW!

Forced to work together on the project while also struggling with being away from her father, Dom begins to realize that no one has been taking care of her for years.
This book is definitely emotional and heavy, but it’s also beautiful and funny.
After reading a couple of Charlene’s books, I’m very familiar with this universe, so seeing characters from her other stories appear was really fun!
I think this is the perfect book if you want to start reading Charlene’s work. It shows how emotional her stories can be, how beautifully written they are, and it will make you fall in love with the characters!

I think this is the perfect book if you want to start reading Charlene’s work. It shows how emotional her stories can be, how beautifully written they are, and it will make you fall in love with the characters!

I had such a great time with Dom and Nick’s story. The flashbacks to when they first met were perfectly woven into the present day timeline, adding just the right amount of history and unresolved tension leading into the weekend long game jam.
Throw in being assigned to the same team and the classic only one bed situation, and the forced proximity was absolutely working overtime.
What really made this story stand out for me, though, was Dom’s emotional journey. Learning about her relationship with her alcoholic father was heartbreaking and gave so much context to the walls she’d built around herself. The way she’d spent years hiding parts of her life to avoid conflict made it easy to see where her struggles with trust, friendships, and relationships came from.
Watching Nick slowly prove that he was worth letting in was so perfectly done, and possibly my favorite part of the book. Their connection grew into something that felt genuine, tender, and stronger than all the hurt they’d been carrying for so long.

I knew from the moment I read the blurb for this one that I was going to love it, and I absolutely did. As someone who loves gaming, the premise immediately caught my attention, and I was so excited to dive into a story centered around gaming. I loved the setting, especially the female in STEM representation and the behind the scenes look at what goes into creating a game. The story felt incredibly real, from the pressure of the game jam to the personal struggles the characters were facing, which made it easy to become invested in their journey.

Charlene Boutin always has a way of making me appreciate Canadian settings, and I loved that this story takes place in and around Montreal, with part of it set in the beautiful Laurentides.
If you’re a fan of gaming or video game development, this one is worth checking out. The story follows a group of developers competing in a game jam tournament, where they’re challenged to create a video game in a limited amount of time. It also brings the main characters back together after they previously clashed in a workplace setting, creating plenty of tension from the start.
The romance developed a little faster than I typically prefer. I would have loved more of a slow burn between the FMC and MMC, but with the novel coming in at under 300 pages, I understand why the relationship moved at a quicker pace.
The final 40% was where the story really shined for me. Charlene’s creativity came through as she built a deeper emotional connection between the characters, adding heart to the romance and making the ending especially satisfying.

I’m not a gamer, so I didn’t quite connect with the storyline or characters in that way. However, I found the other aspects of the characters and story to be quite relatable and felt deeply connected. I especially enjoyed how authentic and raw Dominique was, especially with her father, living situation, and insecurities. Her storyline was very hard, but watching her strength and growth was so amazing to read. I also really liked Nick; his concern for her and his entire demeanour was just so pure and the scene where he cooked for her was so wholesome. I enjoyed reading their journey of creating the game “Remember Me” for the competition. Watching Nick, Dom, Logan and Karan was really fun and interesting to learn about. The ending was so sweet, and I loved the writing throughout and how well the story concluded and flowed. This was a really beautiful story, but with very heavy topics to keep in mind.

As a gamer I loved getting a sort of behind the scenes of a Game Jam. That was really something. I've heard friends talking about them, but never really got into them. Now I know quite something and I'll probably will watch a livestream or two in the future.
Pair it with romance? Even better. I really enjoyed this one. All the nerdy things with the gaming scene and yet, the guilt from Dominique about being a carer, I feel that, being the cared for (being chronically ill and having a carer, I know this situation hit hard for me).
Nick being the one who helps her now coming to terms with everything, being the one who helps her seeing that it's ok to live her life, that it's ok to take a risk sometime, that the burden of the world is not on her shoulders alone....even though he was the one who inadvertently pushed her down years ago (men who have no idea how to deal with their emotions sometimes!).

Dominique and Nick had worked together on a gamer before and left with bad vibes with each other. fast forward many years, they are thrown together to work on a game together at a game jam. Dominque also is dealing with a situation of an alcoholic father that she is self-conscious about.
This book will pull out all the emotions from awww to omg 🔥 to aww 🥲. This was my first book to read by Charlene, and I can't wait to jump into many more.

Content Warnings for Alcohol Substance Abuse, off page Death of a Parent, Toxic Parental Relationship, and Alcohol Poisoning. I greatly appreciated learning a bit more about the gaming developing industry and the forced proximity interested me especially when it came to the buildup of the characters. HOWEVER! I think I personally needed the male perspective to be better invested in the couple (I think I would have appreciated the man more if I understood where he was coming from and why he was seeming rude to the main character). Overall, though, I am curious about other stories from this author, and I am glad I read this in the sense of I appreciated the perspective of the woman. Because of these points, I have to give this a solid 4 out of 5 stars

I loved this book. It has all the tropes I love. Enemies to lovers, forced proximity, one bed. But it was so much deeper than that. The conflict to their love isn’t based on miscommunication. We got to see the MC’s heartbreaking past and why she’s so closed off. The moment when she was sick and compared herself to her mom was so endearing, I just wanted to hug that girl and tell her she was going to be okay. I’m glad she got her happy ending.

This book does have a particularly heavy topic with a parent that struggles with addiction (alcoholism), so if that's something you're sensitive to - please proceed with caution. I think the way Charlène wrote this specific situation in such a heartbreaking while also helping see the side of an adult child wanting to help their parent through the challenging task.

I loved this book! As someone who enjoys videos games, I loved this “behind the scenes” feeling of game development, and the passion that all these characters had for building a game.
I fell in love with Dom and Nick just as quick as they did with each other. It’s a short timespan really, but the intensity of the game jam, their feelings for each other before and after, and the pressure they both experienced was incredibly written and portrayed.
I would absolutely love to see more of them and game jams in the future!!

I always enjoy reading this author's book! This book was super interesting as someone who enjoyed playing video games it was cool reading a romance book that incorporates a lot of video game discussions such as building a game and also talking about different video games. It touches on some harder topics too such as alcohol abuse, care taker burnout, anxiety and passing of a parent. It's written very well and I could feel how anxious and afraid Dom was feeling in the book about everything she is going through. Really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one the author puts out!

I must say, the second half of this book absolutely wrecked me. Some of the dialogue was just so perfectly done and reminded me a little too closely of some of my own experiences.
I related to Dominique so much that it hurt. I will say tho, her reactions to Nick early on were so shitty and unfair 😂
However, this was a great slow burn. Loved the gamer talk so much. Very emotional but had that bit of spice (holy hell) that wrapped it all up so nice.

A fun, nerdy enemies-to-lovers romance with great banter, undeniable chemistry, and plenty of heart. I loved the game jam setting, and Dom and Nick's journey from rivals to romance kept me hooked the whole way through. 🎮💕📚

4.5 stars. I didn't expect to like this book so much, but I really enjoyed the FMC's development as a character. The book is written only from the FMC's point of view, which left me wanting a little more, but overall, the story is good, the spice is good, and the writing is good.
