About the author

G.T. Karber grew up in a small town in Arkansas, the son of a judge and a civil rights attorney. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arkansas with a degree in mathematics and English literature. Then, he moved to Los Angeles, where he received a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.

As the General Secretary of the Hollywood Mystery Society, a theater ensemble and cinematic social club, he has overseen the staging of more than 30 immersive whodunits in the LA area. His first feature film, Killer Party, a horror-comedy-musical-whodunit he co-wrote and directed, is currently in post-production with plans to premiere in festivals in 2023.

Addicting!

This is the fourth puzzle book in the Murdle series, however, this one is a prequel.

In this book, we meet Logico when he joined Deduction College. His dream? To graduate top of the class.

However, not all is as it seems at the college. There are whispers of a secret society, and what is it with the ruby pins being potential murder weapons? Who is the mysterious student with great hair and emerald-green eyes?

All will be revealed in Murdle: The School of Mystery!

I’ve said it so many times before, but I will say it again: I am utterly obsessed with these puzzles.

It gives me utmost pleasure to discover ‘whodunnit’ correctly, although I do make occasional mistakes.

In the previous books, there were 100 puzzles to solve, and this one had only 50: why? I was finished in no time!

I urge you all to buy a copy of these tremendous puzzles. Your life will never be the same again.

I just can't get over how much fun these are! I really enjoy the logic puzzles and the fun descriptions of the people, murder weapons, and other items for solving the puzzles.

The story itself is enjoyable too and reading it piece-meal while also trying to solve other mysteries within the story before Logico is fun too.

This is perfect for puzzle fans and lovers of mysteries. I sincerely appreciate St. Martin's Press for the review copy.

This is the fourth release in the series, but happens before the start of the first book. It is half the size of the previous two, featuring only fifty puzzles, split into 5 sections instead of 4. The first two are the simple 3x3 option grids, which means overall, this felt a lot easier than previous books.

Story wise, it's about Logico at university (well, college - it's an American-style 4 year course), following him as he learns the rules of deduction and gets ensnared in secret societies and college politics. There are lots of throwbacks (forwards?) to the main series, which does lead to some serious ret-conning, such as when Irratino meets Logico. The story was enjoyable enough, but the conciseness of it all leaves the book feeling pretty underwhelming overall.

Gotta give this one the least of the series so far. Not only is there only 50 puzzles but the main plot is a prequel that honestly feels like Logico is on drugs and this is some kind of interrogation tactic. In the end nothing happens and there's STILL NO GAY MARRIAGE. Bad prequel with no underlying mystery I was interested in. Be mad. Give me gay.

It gets a little silly/cheesy at a few parts but overall this was a lot of fun. Big thanks to Barnes and Noble for having this displayed by the registers or else I would never have discovered it! I'm now going to go back and do the previous books in the series.

Jeśli jeszcze nie mieliście okazji zetknąć się z serią Murdle, warto wyjaśnić, na czym polega jej fenomen. Są to zagadki detektywistyczne, w których naszym zadaniem jest rozwiązanie kryminalnej łamigłówki i ustalenie trzech najważniejszych elementów: kto popełnił zbrodnię, jakiego przedmiotu użyto oraz gdzie doszło do przestępstwa. Wszystko wymaga dokładnego analizowania wskazówek i uzupełniania specjalnych diagramów, które pozwalają stopniowo eliminować kolejne możliwości i zbliżać się do rozwiązania.

Lubię takie książki, które nie dość, że zapewniają rozrywkę, to w dodatku pomagają poćwiczyć umiejętność logicznego myślenia, analizowania. Karber stawia nam wyzwanie i przedstawia zagadki, które tylko pozornie wydają się proste, a w rzeczywiści trzeba się mocno natrudzić, by dojść do rozwiązania.

Książka została podzielona na pięć części, każdy odpowiadający kolejnym latom nauki w akademii. Wraz z postępem rośnie również poziom trudności. Na początku czekają na nas stosunkowo proste sprawy, w których wystarczy uważnie przeanalizować poszlaki i wyciągnąć odpowiednie wnioski. Później zadania stają się znacznie bardziej wymagające, pojawiają się między innymi sprzeczne zeznania, ukryte motywy czy wiadomości zapisane w formie szyfrów. Dzięki temu książka nie pozwala się nudzić i cały czas stawia przed czytelnikiem nowe wyzwania.

„Murdle. Akademia tajemnic” zapewnia dobrą zabawę i możliwość poćwiczenia logicznego myślenia. To doskonała propozycja dla wszystkich, którzy lubią łamigłówki, zagadki logiczne i historie detektywistyczne. Niezwykle angażująca książka, która łączy zabawę z ćwiczeniem logicznego myślenia. Polecam! Idealnie sprawdzi się dla wszystkich, którzy lubią trochę pogłówkować nad zagadkami. Dobrze spędzony czas gwarantowany! 💜

The second Murdle book I've done. The setup was different from the Christmas Murdle book, which made it a lot more fun to work through. The puzzles go from easy to hard as the book progresses and everything is tied together in one story. In this one, you go to Deduction College with Logico and people - inconveniently - keep getting murdered.

Join Logico at Deduction College, where each chapter you solve a mystery (usually a murder) using deductive reasoning.

I absolutely love the concept of combining a story with logic puzzles, but the execution in The School of Mystery was a dud. In trying to do both, Murdle was lackluster on both accounts.

The story was basically this: "Oh no, there's a dead body. Let's see who did it. Oh, it was X." And then X confesses, and they get kicked out of the college. And this was repeated 50 times but with slightly different elements in play.

The puzzle part was fun for about the first few. After that, it got old. And then there were elements that you were supposed to figure out before Logico did, but unless you were really paying attention to each and every puzzle, I'm not sure how you could reasonably come to the right conclusions.

And then I'm not entirely sure who the demographic was meant to be for this book. Initially I thought middle grade, but some of the language and themes were a bit mature for this audience. I think the young adult group would not find this amusing or entertaining. As for the adult demographic, well, you read my review.

I have not looked into any of the other books in this series, but ultimately, I think the Jr. series may have the best prospect. The idea of this series would be great for the reluctant reader who may get hooked by the puzzle aspect. Or, for a kid who already loves to read, this could be a great way to work the brain in a different way.

I'd give this 6 stars if I could. I couldn't see any of the plot twists, and all of the quick quips and jokes made me laugh. I may or may not have rage quit 4 times (including times I counted half-rage-quits rounded up). But there's no real learning if you didn't goof up something you should've gotten after reading it the first three times. I think I got the bachelor's, if not the masters based on how many stars I got? I didn't count, but I'm optimistic. I got volume 1 for my birthday, and I'm excited to dive in. after a while, though. I need a break. my brain hurts.

What a great new addition to the Murdle collection! Without spoiling, they've added some new clue types and other small changes that keep things interesting and fresh without changing the Murdle we're used to. This installment is my favourite now for sure.
Also, it's easy to pick up for those who are new if it's your first time.

I love puzzles and a love a good mystery so it's no surprise I have quite enjoyed working my way through Murdle - The School of Mystery puzzles ! My husband and kiddos have even joined in on solving a few. It's perfect for those times I'm out waiting for school pick up or waiting for an appointment and don't have time to invest in my current read but don't want to be scrolling endlessly through my phone

Is the biggest emotional rollercoaster I've had in a book to date.
It has more plot twists than any other Murdle book.
I don't want to give a spoiler review, because then people who haven't read it won't see. And people definitely need to read this.
The puzzles take loads of new turns not seen before in the previous books.

Bonus points for having the most amazing author in the world. I don't have enough praise for this book. It's just beautiful from start to finish.

I love these books so much. There is so much more to these books than just puzzles. And they connect back to previous puzzles and you need to always keep your head about you. My favorite part is that as everything gets harder. You get more confident and question yourself less and just go with your gut. I need 10 more of these!

To nie jest książka, którą się czyta. To książka, w której się żyje. Od pierwszej strony stajemy się aktywnym uczestnikiem śledztwa. 🔍 jakość zagadek – są uczciwe. Wszystko, czego potrzebujesz do rozwiązania, jest w tekście i materiałach pomocniczych. Żadnych tanich sztuczek – tylko czysta logika i dedukcja.
🔍 forma – piękne wydanie z diagramami, mapami i dodatkowymi wskazówkami, które naprawdę pomagają wejść głębiej w sprawę.

Przyznam szczerze: to nie było moje pierwsze Murdle i jestem wciąż absolutnie oczarowana. Książka wciągnęła mnie tak mocno, że kilka wieczorów z rzędu odkładałam telefon i laptopa, tylko po to, żeby „jeszcze jedną sprawę”. To idealne połączenie rozrywki premium z treningiem szarych komórek. Czujesz się mądrzejszy po każdej rozwiązanej zagadce.

„Murdle. Akademia tajemnic” to książka-escape room, książka-kryminał i książka-trener logicznego myślenia w jednym. Zabieram ją na wakacje bez najmniejszych wątpliwości – na plażę, do samochodu, na wieczorne sesje przy dobrej herbacie. I już wiem, że to nie będzie mój ostatni tom serii.

Murdle - De school der mysteries bevat een verzameling zaken die de beste detective ter wereld, Deductive Logico, gedurende zijn carrière heeft onderzocht. In dit deel van de Murdle-reeks staan weer 50 dodelijke denkpuzzels waarvoor je je brein goed moet gebruiken. Aan het begin van het boek wordt met een uitgebreid voorbeeld uitgelegd hoe de raadsels werken en hoe je deze oplost. Je hebt er niet veel voor nodig: een potlood (met een gum, weet ik inmiddels uit ervaring) en je hersenen zijn voldoende.

Het boek is opgedeeld in vijf moeilijkheidsgraden, waarbij iedere graad staat voor een nieuw jaar op de faculteit. Bij iedere puzzel is het de bedoeling dat je erachter komt wie de moord heeft gepleegd, waarmee dit is gebeurd en waar dit heeft plaatsgevonden. Bij sommige puzzels staat ook nog een vierde vraag vermeld, zoals waarom de moord gepleegd is. Mocht je er niet uitkomen, dan staan er achterin het boek hints bij ieder raadsel en natuurlijk ook de oplossingen!

Op de achterkant van het boek staat: ‘Cluedo meets Mastermind in een puzzelboek’, en daar kan ik het alleen maar mee eens zijn! Inmiddels is dit het derde Murdle-puzzelboek dat ik in mijn bezit heb en het verveelt nog geen moment. Wat was het motief van de moord? Waarmee is de moord gepleegd? En wie is de dader? Dit zijn vragen die de afgelopen periode vaak door mijn hoofd gingen. Al snel denk je: ‘nog eentje dan’, om er vervolgens een aantal puzzels later achter te komen dat je nog steeds bezig bent.

Murdle is een perfect boek voor iedere puzzelliefhebber. Zoals ik al zei, heb ik zelf meerdere Murdle-boeken in mijn bezit en is dit ook een boek dat ik regelmatig als cadeautje aan een andere puzzelliefhebber geef!

Co najczęściej robicie podróżując pociągiem lub samolotem? Czytacie wciągające powieści, nadrabiacie zaległe seriale, a może po prostu śpicie?

Ja zdecydowanie należę do teamu "książka w podróży", choć w moim przypadku nie zawsze jest to klasyczna lektura. Wszystko zależy od nastroju - raz mam ochotę na dobry kryminał, a innym razem wolę wyzwania, które pozwalają mi mocniej wytężyć umysł. Sięgam wtedy między innymi po Murdle, czyli serię, którą koniecznie chcę Wam dzisiaj przedstawić. A okazja jest idealna, bo już 15 lipca premierę będzie miała jej najnowsza odsłona, czyli: "Murdle. Akademia tajemnic"!

Tym, którzy nigdy wcześniej nie słyszeli o Murdle, spieszę z wyjaśnieniem, że to zestaw zagadek, w których musimy ustalić KTO jest winny, CZYM popełniono zbrodnię i GDZIE do niej doszło. Wszystko opiera się na wypełnianiu specjalnych diagramów (na podstawie wskazówek oraz opisów), które prowadzą nas krok po kroku do prawdy. Książka została podzielona na 5 rozdziałów (lat nauki w akademii) o rosnącym poziomie trudności - od prostszych spraw, wymagających analizy poszlak i wskazówek, aż po skomplikowane śledztwa z kłamliwymi zeznaniami, motywami czy zaszyfrowanymi wiadomościami. Całości dopełnia fantastyczny humor i opisy, które momentami bawią do łez.

"Murdle. Akademia tajemnic" to genialna propozycja na rozruszanie szarych komórek w trakcie urlopu, ale też kapitalna rozrywka do dawkowania sobie jej na co dzień. Książka wciąga bez reszty, bawi i uczy nieszablonowego myślenia, przez co rewelacyjnie sprawdzi się jako prezent dla każdego fana łamigłówek i zagadek detektywistycznych. Jeśli szukacie czegoś, co skutecznie skróci Wam każdą podróż i rozgrzeje umysł do czerwoności, ten tytuł będzie strzałem w dziesiątkę!

Lisioł jest profesjonalistą, więc do lektury „Murdle. Akademia tajemnic” pióra G. T. Karber'a przygotował sobie niezbędne rekwizyty. Oczywiście lupę, bo co to za śledczy bez lupy? Zaparzył sobie ciepłe kakao, idąc w ślady Poirota, po czym hołdując Sherlockowi Holmesowi, dolał do rzeczonego kakao nieco procentów. Tak przygotowany, futrzak wyruszył spotkać 50 złowrogich zagadek logicznych.

Na dzień dobry możemy wyciąć z okładki znacznik zagadek, bardzo przydatny gadżet! Następnie Lisioł proponuje zapoznać się z instrukcją, żeby potem nie patrzeć na krzyżówki jak sroka w gnat. W końcu dzięki zebraniu informacji o podejrzanych, miejscu zbrodni, narzędziu oraz poszlak i wskazówek można dotrzeć do celu. Małe szare komórki pracują, proszę Państwa! Aczkolwiek zeznania w łacinie klasycznej mogą zbić niejednego z tropu *mruknął Lisioł, czytając pod nosem* Sucocusjosolusożuskusa Umusberum pusrzusyniusiosusłusa dzusiwusnuse wusidesełuskusi... a mówią, że Akademia Logiki i Dedukcji to renomowane i szanowane miejsce, w którym się nie pije alkoholu. Też coś!

Mamy więc 50 spraw, gdzie nawet spotkanie absolwentów to niezła katastrofa. Jako detektyw Logico musimy stawić czoła tym dziwnym, mrocznym i bardzo życiowym zagadkom np. jeśli nie znajdzie się morderca statysty, nie będzie można wznowić zdjęć na planie. Prawdziwa tragedia! Są też tajemnice rodowe, takie jak tajemnicza śmierć obu matek Irratina. Jeśli chcecie wiedzieć, czemu były dwie, albo jak dokonały tej sztuczki, to Lisioł serdecznie zaprasza do lektury oraz rozwiązywania zagadek.

I still enjoy these little logic puzzles with a background queer romance and pretensions of an overarching murder mystery storyline, but I feel it's fair to ask of any ongoing series what each new volume brings to the table. In the case of this fourth Murdle installment, the key differences are that it's only half the length of its predecessors, at 50 challenges instead of the usual 100, and that it's a flashback origin story for the hero and his love interest, who apparently met as undergrads. For the former, that means it's objectively a flimsier work that smells a bit like the publisher trying to push out a weaker product while the market is hot. Meanwhile the latter aspect could theoretically deepen the recurring characters or introduce some nice dramatic irony, but in practice it mostly amounts to jokes like Sister Lapis (who's a nun in the present) being in a sorority back in college.

I can't complain too much. These items are generally fun to solve -- especially the ones where every suspect gives a statement and the culprit's is actually a lie, although there are just 25 of them here -- and the larger plot, loose though it is, remains a distinctive feature. But it's all getting a bit repetitive too, so I think at this point I probably wouldn't buy any subsequent sequels for myself.
