COPING is an exciting novella that follows FALLING in the GIRL WITH BROKEN WINGS series.
Maya, a quirky and likable heroine, is intent on joining her half-brothers in their secret war against the genetically-enhanced killers that call themselves angels. Still trying to cope with her new abilities and the hunger that threatens to overwhelm her, Maya may be more of a hindrance than a help to her brothers as they take on a new mission and make a horrifying discovery.
COPING is a fast-paced novella that brings readers back into Maya’s darkly-humorous world where angels are not the good guys, the heroes don’t wear tights, and getting in over your head just means it’s Tuesday. This quick read is the perfect bridge between FALLING (Book One in the series) and LANDING (Book Two in the series)
Join Maya, Gabe, and Tarren for more blood, bullets, and Chuck Norris jokes in COPING part of the GIRL WITH BROKEN WINGS new adult paranormal series.
Warning: This book contains violence and strong language. BOOK REVIEW BLOGGERS LOVE COPING:
>>> “5 STARS ALL THE WAY! J Bennett knocks another one out of the park. I thoroughly enjoyed FALLING and now COPING. I can't wait for book 3!!! TBR, Book Review Blog
>>> “It's totally exciting. Dramatic. Vividly intense. Poignant. Need I add that it's an utterly riveting, page-turning read? To sum up, I have discovered a bold new talent to follow! ” Night’s Dream of Books, Book Review Blog
>>> “This is the kind of tale that leaves you desperately wanting the next piece... any piece. Okay, you'll take the leftover scraps, just give you something! Kind of book!” The Insane Ramblings of a Crazed Writer, Book Review Blog Warning: this work contains strong language and violence.
J Bennett lives and writes in San Diego. Her writing partner is a bunny named Avalon who contributes to each manuscript by trying to eat it. His adorableness is his primary strength as a writer.
J Bennett is a professional copywriter and an author who loves asking that oh-so-dangerous question – “What if?” She currently writes a paranormal adventure series, Girl With Broken Wings, and a tongue-in-cheek short story series, The Vampire’s Housekeeper Chronicles, featuring a very old, very grouchy, very non-sparkly vampire and his patient housekeeper.
Short and violent, this novella is a side trip for Maya, Gabe and Tarren to show them what monsters the lab angels are in their never ending hunger for human energy.
Perhaps the coolest part of buying the series is the author notes which provide more insight into the characters, scene set up and even her challenges in getting the book series published.
Coping is a well written Novella by J Bennett. The author continues the unique story about Maya. The plot is intricate and captivating and I was impressed about how much the author packed into this novella. This book is quite gruesome at one point showing what these "angels" are capable of.
Maya is definitely starting to grow into her own and learning who she is. I enjoy seeing her grow although she is still struggling while doing so. I really enjoy Gabe and his never ending trust in her and I really hope that he never looses that! His brother makes up for it by being the cynical one and between the two I guess you could call them balanced. This trio is unique and rather interesting. Their story is definitely worth following and I for one am glad I came across it!
I flew through this on a flight after finishing Falling. I loved reading more about the adventures of Gabe/Tarren/Maya and getting a bit more insight into their lives. As Maya struggles to learn about her new, undesired life and needs, there are some benefits to her new strengths and abilities -- but her brothers still have to learn to trust her.
Super quick read. I dove right into the next one in the series.

Maya is coping - barely - with this strange new life. Finally realizing that she cannot change herself, she has a new sense of purpose. But she is always just on the brink of self-control ...
Coping was only 70 pages long so this review isn’t going to be that big. It’s what happens after Falling and before Landing.
Coping starts with Maya and her brothers ending a mission and beginning a new one. They are hunting down angels one by one, but they have no idea how many were made. The new job they are on is a simple one or so they think. We they find him, it is worse than what they thought. They are under prepared, but when has that ever stopped Maya’s brothers. Maya’s brother’s been through a lot of hard situations, but they still get up every morning and try to make the world a safer place. Even if Tarren never smiles.
In Coping we get to see Tarren maybe warming up to Maya and by that I mean there are less scowls. Lol Tarren and Gabe actually let Maya be a part of a mission. Maya reflects on her past and makes big decisions for her future. I recommend reading Coping before Landing because I think you need to have an idea of what’s going on with everyone and what their mindset is.
Overall: A short read that not only let’s us see progress in Maya’s relationship with her brothers, but also Maya taking a stand.
This is the second book in the "Girl with Broken Wings Series". It is a very quick and short read. I finished in less than an hour.
The character development is much greater defined. You get to be inside her head a bit more and can understand her a bit more.
All in all, a great short story, with some unique aspects. Again it is very short for a second installment in the story and it really doesn't help answer any questions you may have or give you a clear idea of where the story is going. Also beware the language in Coping is quite a bit more risque than in Falling with a pronounced use of the F bomb.
I would consider this a great stepping stone to book 3. But I was a little let down by it not being longer. I give it a 3.5, mostly due to its length and not answering questions I had at the end of Falling.
only a short second instalment, just over a hour reading time, but this tells of how Maya is coping with her change. it lets us into the everyday run of things, with Gabe and Tarren, and how things are done.
it still doesn't let us into the thoughts of the brothers, and I really would like to see that.
Tarren is beginning to relent and let Maya join in the hunt for the Angels, and also letting a little of himself known, I'm wondering where that is going, and I'm not at all convinced that Tarren is entirely human! Gabe is Gabe, and doesn't change much! we do come across the brother of Sunshine, the girl they were looking for in the first book, and again, that's going down a line I cant quite see yet!
Maya still needs to feed, but she has upgraded to fish to rats! ew!!
I actually liked this second book a little better than the first! I understood more of what was happening, there was no more learning curve, LOL. So I could just enjoy the story for what it was - a nice fun paranormal with a lot of excitement and action!
There was also better character development in this one. I felt like the characters started to take on more personalities and I knew and liked them better. Especially Maya, you as the reader got inside her head a little more in this book and understood her more.
This series is a nice quick fun read if you like paranormal with originality! I am now looking forward to reading the third - "Landing" which I will review next month.
While I'm not usually one for novellas, I did enjoy this quick read that is in line with one of my favorite books. It picks up one month after book one ends. We see that Maya is still struggling with her new life, but is learning to be apart of her new family.
She is involved in her first mission, and while she falters, it's completely expected. I mean you can't expect her to be completely mentally ready for that big of a life change after only a month.
All in all, a nice short story, to keep you in touch with Maya and her struggles.
Normally novellas are back stories into a charter that we really don't know a lot about. With Coping the story continues right were it leaves off in Falling. An easy fast read - about an hour or so.
