Revelations #1

On a Red Horse

Rate this book
Scarlet needs a new job, but Horseman of the Apocalypse doesn't sound good on a resume. Three years ago she followed her companions to Earth in an effort to live human lives. But the moment she left her husband Tyr she knew life wouldn't be worth living. Lonely and longing for her husband, Scarlet is on a path of destruction that could endanger all the riders.

Tyr, god of justice, hunts his wife across the realms. From Hell to the Golden Throne, he travels until he finds her working as a phone operator. Scarlet is no longer the woman he fell in love with, and he is determined to bring that woman back to him if it takes the rest of eternity.

Even though the Horsemen live on Earth, they are still responsible for guarding four seals that can unleash the Apocalypse. When a prophecy is awoken by a deity who only has her own interests at heart, they must go on the defensive to keep their homes on Earth and protect the seals. If even one seal opens, it will start a chain reaction that will force the Horsemen to take up their mantles and destroy the new lives they've worked so hard to build.

It took me a while but bit by bit it was written :)

4.5 Damn Hot Stars

When I read the blurb and saw the cover I was so excited to read it and boy was it worth it!
description

Reading this brought a whole new experience to the Four Horsemen concept. These four horsemen are no ordinary beings but are four kick-ass women! They all play a unique part in this novel and to be introduced to them was an amazing part of this read. So many things in this novel were original you had to take a step back just to admire the author’s skill in writing it.

description

This novel focuses on Scarlet who plays the role of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. She left behind her world to live on Earth with the other three horsemen. Sadly, that meant leaving behind her husband.

I really enjoyed her character. She’s so easy to relate to and her thoughts mimic real life thinking. Readers will love this horseman and her kick-ass sword skills!

description

Now here is where it gets so damn good! When Tyr finds Scarlet you can't help but fall in love with him and his actions. I love the fact that Ms Corwin switches points of views between them two and love that we get to see inside Tyr's mind. He's a hard man but so unbelievably gorgeous and heart melting! He treated his wife like gold and wanted to give her everything she desired. His character made you want to smile continuously and makes you want a man like him!

Thoughts: The novel doesn’t just stop at Scarlet and Tyr finding each other. No you get so much more in the novel. There are actually twists and underlying threats involving all of the horseman that keeps you hooked. These twists and turns will keep you on your feet and constantly guessing what will happen.

The intricate details the author puts around the four horseman’s ‘weapons’ is amazing. I couldn’t have possible imagined anything like this. This type of imagination is an absolute bonus to this novel.

My favourite part of the whole novel...

Nearing the ending of the novel Ms Corwin threw a major twist that had me wanting to throw my iPad across the room! I wanted to scream and shout. My mind couldn't believe what was going on! I actually thought what had happened actually happened and I couldn’t accept it!

description

But I held on and kept on reading and...just beautiful. This twist made the novel much more stronger. It made me fall in love with all characters even more! It was an amazing and original take on the four horseman that you can't help but admire Ms Corwin's ability to bring her creative imagination to life!

I am truly looking forward to more upcoming novels by this author! A brilliant introduction to a perfect new series! Recommended to anyone who loves a romantic story with a whole lot of action!

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Urban Fantasy might be the ultimate feminist genre. The best heroines kick ass while they challenge gender roles and sexual norms. And after characters like Gin Blanco, Cat Crawfield and even Anita Blake, my expectations of Urban Fantasy stories are high. The idea of female horsemen of the apocalypse is an intriguing one. As a fan of Lucifer, the idea of dangerous immortals living among us also caught my interest.

Unfortunately, beyond the premise of this story, I found myself thoroughly underwhelmed.

In most Urban Fantasy, at least one character is human and needs the fantasy elements of the world explained to them. All of the characters in this story are deities and there is an assumption that they all know and understand the complicated realms they move between. For me as a reader, it just doesn’t work. There just isn’t enough worldbuilding here for me to believe in this story. Too many immortal characters, too many mythologies and too many worlds made me confused. The first part of the story limps, the last part of the book races and there are too many things left unexplained in the middle.

When characters are strong and well developed, I can get over weak world building. But Scarlet is confusing. I don’t understand her poverty, her day job or her sudden wealth. She is isolated even from the other horsemen. I don’t fully understand her role as War. Where I would expect War to be a kickass heroine, Scarlet gets weepy. When her husband randomly appears after a long absence, she just falls in line. There isn’t much romance - just a change of address. The unnaturally stilted speech didn’t help me warm to Scarlet or any of the other characters.

Tyr provides an alpha male romantic partner for Scarlet - but they are already married and he isn’t the most entertaining guy in the world. Dialogue feels forced and sex scenes feel dated. The final (and only) action sequence doesn’t involve much of any action. I wanted more of the sisterhood we see glimpses of at the end. I wanted more emotion. I wanted more action. And if an author includes a romance - it has to be one I believe in.

Scarlet

This is a great standalone series opener and it aptly sets the stage as an introduction to the series. It captured my attention sufficiently to send me on to the next book in the series, which is even better.

Scarlet is a horseman and a call center operator. When her fellow horseman decided to leave the void for Earth, she went along, not bothering to tell them she was recently married. She didn't want to leave her husband, Tyr, son of Odin, but the horsemen have to stay together.

Tyr, the Norse God of Justice, woke to find his wife gone from their bed. He has searched everywhere for her in the years since, even in Hades, but couldn't find her. Then he locates her on Earth, eking out a merger existence at a job she hates and that hates her. And worse, she is nothing like the fiery woman he married. This one can't even meet his eyes. He wants his wife back, but the woman he's found isn't his wife. He's determined to bring her back, or even better, the woman she's becoming.

I must admit, this is the first romance I have ever read, apocalyptic paranormal or otherwise. Part of Ms. Corwin's stated mission is to make romance accessible to everyone, so, I thought I would take her up on her offer.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, but, there were a couple of parts with which I had difficulty. In the beginning, I had trouble keeping track of the Horsemen and their Earthly names. Fortunately, the story starts with a "scorecard" of who is who that I could easily double check for identities. To be fair, that could be chalked up to reader skill level.
I also thought Scarlet let Tyr completely back into her life too quickly. Granted, Tyr is smooth, but he doesn't talk his way back into Scarlet's arms; rather, he plays up Scarlet's strengths. I just found the reunion to be fast.
Corwin includes plenty of characters that will send you back to the Mythology you learned in high school. She made some interesting choices from a variety of mythos, and they all seemed to play together well.
I especially enjoyed the playful nature of Scarlet and Tyr's relationship once the reunion was out of the way. Inside the bedroom and out, eating, sparring, talking, flirting, having sex, whatever, they both saw it as a game, and each did their best to win. They are a fun couple to watch.
The ending had me wanting more of Scarlet and Tyr, and fortunately, "On a Red Horse" is book one a series.

Okay folks first full disclosure, I'm friendly with the author. We talk non-book stuff and in the past hung out at various events. She's awesome and before being an author was a book blogger I admired. This in no way influenced my rating.

Previous to this book I've had 2ish brushes with the Four Horsemen. In Highlander, with my one time all consuming crush Methos, Charmed where Apocalypse = Capitalism (no seriously it did) and in a Vertigo comic series I remember vaguely only because it had nudity and I read it at like 13. I barely have religious understanding of them.

Corwin's take humanizes (ahahaha you have no idea how funny that is considering the main character's intro) them while running them through the cosmic ringer. Fate, life, love...at the end of the day (end of times?) none of that matters if you refuse to speak up and do what needs to be done. Watch as they learn the hard way!

A great story from start to finish. I loved the nature of Tyr. What you see is what you get, and the independent nature of Scarlet. There were times I could feel her inner turmoil when her human/War nature conflicted, and sometimes she was simply...er, cranky. However, I was definitely drawn to side characters from the start. To me, they held more mystery and appeal, which makes the book worth a read for them alone. I look forward to more of this series, and I can't wait to really get a good look at Hades...please?

I also found the pairing of the Biblical and mythological world and characters refreshing. I loved the story arc, and hope it can be continued, or expanded on in further stories.

I enjoyed the twist this story took on the four horsemen. Corwin did a good job of keeping my attention while providing a fun short read. My favorite parts were in the dialogue between Scarlett and her love interest. They were witty fun characters.
This didn't pull on me emotionally. It ends on a touch of curiosity leaving this available as a series of the different couples involved in this first tale of magic and destiny.

The characters come off as real in my head. I could picture almost everything well, specially liked the underworld and Hel- talk about lanky ugly. Hel was a good choice for a 'bad' guy character. Her desire for Hades is both realistic for me as a reader as well as providing enough issues to keep the story moving.
I enjoyed this unique take on an old idea...

Phenomenal story that tackled a lot of complex issues, including depression and dealing with disability in a great, realistic way, even amidst the paranormal storyline revolving around the four horsemen of the Apocalypse...who just so happen to be women.

Worth a read through.

It took me awhile to get into this book. But once I did, it was pretty good. Gives a whole new take on the 4 horsemen. Add a bit of Greek and Norse mythology and it gets quite entertaining.

I'm not usually a fan of the paranormal genre but this was different than I was expecting. Immortals who are living in NYC among humans but still have their powers and seals. The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse are Cloris, the Horsemen of Death and their leader, Katherine, the Horseman of Famine, Scarlet, the Horseman of War and the main character in the story along with Tyr, a god and her husband and Bianca, the Horseman of Conquest who looks like a teenager. They are all immortals and have lived two thousand years.

There is the Underworld which they visit and lots of evil on Earth, in the Underworld and even in Asgard where they are from. There were a lot of human qualities assigned to the characters and I had to remember that they were in the form of humans but not human themselves. There was a nice flow to the story but it ended too abruptly for me. There were hot between the sheet moments between Scarlet and her husband that took place not only in or on a bed.

Corwin is a new to me author. I plan to read the rest of this series and hope for better closure.

This is the book that helped Monica Corwin live up to her mission of 'making Romance accessible for everyone.' I was not a Romance reader prior to this book (other than the 'skipping to the good parts' that most of us do in our teens).

This book changed that. The unique take on the Four Riders of the Apocalypse pulled me in. The characters, the story, the world--all served to hook me early on and by the time I was done, I not only had finished my first romance novel, but I had finished a great story that let me hungry for more!

Worth the read!

Enjoyed this good Book

There's a line in this story about how people feel guilty over reading a good book and because of the guilty feel say it was a waste of time but I Do Not say this was a waste of time because it wasn't.

I never knew that the four horsemen could be so human. Monica highlighted them with just the right amount of humanity and power. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a good clean romance with undertones of strife.

It was good enough. Nothing that made me go crazy and read all the books in the series. Not saying it was bad, or maybe it's just me. All the PNR books seem to be the same old same old but new characters!! Sigh!!

Interesting concept for a book, with the four horsemen of the apocalypse being women. However, the story felt underdeveloped.

Amazing start to a series. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are female and this is their story. The first story is about Scarlet, the Horseman of War. Wonderful take on this story. Amazing characters and a well written story, make this a must read if you're a paranormal fan.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Life on Earth has been lonely for Scarlet. Even her friends, the other Horsemen of the Apocalypse, can't lift her depression. Yet when her husband Tyr finds her, her dull existence burns brighter. Tyr had been searching for his wife for three years across all the realms, but when he finds her, he doesn't find the woman he married. His love helps bring her out of her depression. At the same time, Hel is determined to bring about the Apocalypse and bring about the prophecy that will kill Tyr. The Horsemen are determined to protect their seals, but what will Scarlet do her job and protect her seal while her husband's life hangs in the balance?

I love this modern take on the Four Horsemen and how their mythology mixes with myths from all around the world. Scarlet is War, but the woman we first see is very unlike what one would imagine War to be like. She seems defeated by heartbreak. Yet when Tyr comes back into her life, we see her strength come through. Tyr, himself, is a strong lead as the God of Justice. A great complement to Scarlet as he can match her in the sparring ring and out of it! The love between them is powerful and natural.

As the first book in this series, I was hooked. I found the other Horsemen absolutely intriguing. Cloris as Death especially, with her association with Hades. I will be picking up the next book.

I'm sure we all know the story of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. But what if the horsemen weren't men? and what if they were protecting the four seals?

Well, this is the story of Scarlet, you guessed it the Red Horse, War. She has spent the last 3 yrs building up walls - not letting others to close - not even the other Horses. Her husband, Tyr, from the Norse pantheon, represents justice - walks into her place of work, her day job is a technology help call center worker. Well, he doesn't just walk in... explodes into her life again, like some HE-Man barbarian (be still my heart!).

I adored Tyr - he search everywhere for the woman he loves - he never gave up - persistent to the core. Never Say Die - Never Surrender.

The undeniable connection and absolutely sizzling heat that comes of Tyr & Scarlet is panty-melting. Yep, my toes even curled while reading this one!

Absolutely, looking forward to the next installment.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this Author's Copy and was not compensated in any way.

I recieved a copy of this book to read and review, giving my honest opinion of the story!

This was my first experience with author Monica Corwin. I must say that she has me hooked on this series and I am dying to hear what happens next!

On a Red Horse takes place in a modern day world, with the end of life as we know it hanging in the balance. This is the story of the four horsemen of the apocolypse, but not as we've always heard it. These horsemen are four kick-ass women who live as humans among us, all the while pushing the norms for females and each guarding her own seal of the end of time. The first book in this Revelations series is On a Red Horse, which is Scarlet's story. Scarlet is the embodiment of war. She's been living among the humans with her friends for three years now. She misses her secret husband dearly... Tyre, the god of justice. This feeling is mutual as we learn early on in the book that Tyre has been searching everywhere for Scarlet, from Hell to the Golden Throne.

The author did an excellent job of keeping my interest and making me want more!

The four Horsemen and Hades have taken up living on Earth. They have to have somewhat normal lives while still protecting the seals. But Scarlet is miserable, when they left the Void three years ago to come here, she had to leave her husband as well. But when her husband, Tyr, finds her, he learns she's changed. Will he be able to get his old wife back so she can be happy again? They also have to worry about the threat of Hel as she want's Hades back and to bring on the apocalypse. After all, if one seal opens, it starts a reaction to the others opening. Will the Horsemen, Hades and Tyr be able to work together in making sure Hel doesn't get her way? Can't wait to find out what happens in the next book!
